Remember bada? Well, it’s giving Windows Phone a kicking

Samsung’s bada platform may be less well known than Windows Phone, but it’s still outselling Microsoft platform in worldwide smartphone sales. While the big movement may be up at the iOS and Android end, bada’s 3-percent of the worldwide market share in Q3 2012 is, according to the latest clutch of stats from analysts Gartner, enough to eclipse Microsoft’s OS at 2.4-percent. However, that could well change as Windows Phone 8 sales begin.

“Windows Phone’s share weakened year-on-year as the Windows Phone 8 launch dampened demand of Windows Phone 7 devices” Gartner suggested, though the new version of the platform may not be the instant good news OEMs like Nokia are hoping for. In fact, Nokia’s new Lumia devices will only “help to halt the decline in share” in Q4, with no “significant improvement” predicted until 2013.

Nokia isn’t the only firm having a tough quarter. RIM and HTC dropped to third and fourth places in the manufacturers chart respectively, and there are fears that even retaining those positions may be untenable. “The challenges might prevent them from holding on to their current rankings in coming quarters” Gartner’s Anshul Gupta said of the firms.

On the up, meanwhile, are Samsung and Apple. Samsung has the Q3 2012 top spot, with 22.9-percent of the market, while Apple has 5.5-percent of the market; Android has 72.4-percent market share, according to Gartner’s figures, a sizable jump year-on-year from 52.5-percent. In contrast, iOS market share declined slightly, from 15-percent a year ago to 13.9-percent, though it’s RIM and Symbian which saw the biggest falls.

Apple’s Q4 2012 is likely to be a good one, Gartner concludes, with the new iPhone 5 and fledgling sales in various new locations meaning the holiday quarter should end positively. Many iPhone 4S/4 owners held off upgrading until the new handset was released, the analysts point out, something which Apple itself has suggested.

The holiday season overall, however, may not be the salvation many firms hope for. Gartner predicts smartphone sales will not get the traditional kick, as shoppers look to other devices such as tablets for potential gifts.

Samsung to unveil Bada smart TV at CES 2013?

Samsung’s Bada platform might not necessarily be the most popular smartphone platform at the moment, but it looks like it might be seeing a new lease on life come 2013. Word on the street has it that Samsung could be unveiling a new smart TV at CES 2013, and that TV could be powered by none other than the South Korean company’s Bada platform. We know that Samsung already has a Google TV, so making a smart TV running on Bada would not be completely out of the picture. This smart TV is said to feature a simplified interface and offer a streaming service similar to the Apple TV, and thanks to its Bada platform, this will be a way for Samsung to introduce apps, content as well as a possible advertising platform for companies looking for some exposure. The exact specs and nature of this TV is unknown at this point, but if you’re interested in seeing what Samsung has to offer, CES 2013 will run in January next year so check back with us then for the details!

Samsung Wave S8500 Bada smartphone gets unofficial AOKP Jelly Bean ROM

Prior to Samsung producing Galaxy devices based on Google’s Android operating system, the company had attempted to create a mobile platform of their own called Bada. While Bada has its fair share of fans, we guess the platform did not take off the way that Samsung had anticipated. Unfortunately this also meant that there are customers out there with Bada smartphones who are either waiting out their contracts or simply do not have the spare cash to get a new Android powered one. Well the good news is that if you own a Bada smartphone, particularly that of the Samsung Wave S8500, you’re in luck as it seems that XDA member Tigrouzhen has managed to get an unofficial AOKP Jelly Bean ROM up and running on the phone.

This is pretty awesome because we know that there are some Android phones out there that have yet to receive Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but an old Bada handset beat them to the punch. It is reportedly working for the most part, although there have been some comments left by forum members claiming that the radio feature isn’t working which means that calling and SMS functionality is a no-go, but its developer claims that its performance is “Better then (sic) Samsung Nexus without overcklock and kernel optimized now.” Given that its radio isn’t working, we suggest maybe you give this a pass especially if the S8500 is your main phone, but if you’ve got an old S8500 lying around, perhaps you might be interested in giving this ROM a shot by going to the forums for the download.

Viber comes to Nokia Lumias running Windows 7, brings HD Voice calling, group messaging

VoIP-over-3G app Viber broke down in tears when it learned that, after Android, iOS and Windows Phone, there were no new worlds to conquer. Then a helpful soul pointed out that there were more than 1.5 Billion S40 devices in the world, and it set about adding that to the existing 100 million users of its service. In addition, it’s bringing its free-calls platform to Symbian and Bada handsets while current Nokia Lumia owners running Windows Phone 7 will find they can now access HD voice calls and group calls. iOS users shouldn’t feel left out, however, since an update to their app will add support for a variety of languages including Simplified Chinese, Hebrew and Portuguese.

Samsung not expected to launch new Bada or Tizen devices for the remainder of 2012

As some of you guys know, Bada is Samsung’s attempt at a smartphone platform of their own. While it might not have taken off in the same way that iOS and Android has, it no doubt has its fair share of fans who might prefer it over the more popular choices available. If you happen to be such a fan, or perhaps looking forward to Samsung’s attempts with Tizen, you guys are going to be in for a disappointment as according to reports, Samsung will not be introducing any new Bada phones in 2012, and have also shifted the launch of Tizen devices to 2013. Apparently the company is focusing on Android and Windows Phone 8 devices for the latter part of the year, which we guess can be appreciated by those who are more excited at Samsung’s Windows Phone 8 and Android attempts, rather than Bada or Tizen. Any fans out there who might be disappointed by this news?
