David Laferriere is a graphic designer and illustrator. He’s also an awesome dad who has been drawing stuff on his kids’ sandwich bags since May 2008, using Sharpie markers. In his own words: More »

Finger Trap Handbags: You’ll Be Stuck with This Purchase

Chinese finger traps are probably the bane of many children’s (and android’s) existences. Of course, it’s not much of a scare or prank once you figure out how to get your fingers out of the trap, but the trauma (“I’m going to be stuck like this forever!”) remains.

Picking up on how finger traps work is designer James Piatt, who managed to work its mechanism into a series of ladies’ handbags.

chinese finger trap bags The result? His Finger Trap line of handbags, which requires at least one trapped finger to ‘hold’ the bag. The full-sized version is best carried with three fingers trapped in the handles (or shall I say, finger-dles?) It comes with a shoulder strap, in case you’d prefer to have full use of your bag finger while you’re carrying it.

This here is the mini version of the Finger Trap bag:

It’s definitely an unusual design inspired by an equally unusual puzzle. They don’t come cheap, either. The full-sized Finger Trap bag costs $725(USD), while the mini one retails for $125.

How to Keep Water out of Any Canvas Bag

When it comes to bags and backpacks, the holy grail is a bag that’s completely waterproof, to protect all of your precious gadgets from rain and snow. Check out what Allen Mowery at DIY Photography has come up with. It’s an easy way to make any canvas bag water-resistant.

coating wax mixture

In order to make your canvas bag bead water, you’ll need two pots (or a double-boiler you don’t care about,) a mixture of paraffin and bee’s wax, and a brush. Water needs to be boiled in one pot. The other pot is going to be placed inside of this with the wax, causing it to melt. Use the brush to coat the bag with wax. Once you’ve covered the entire bag, let it dry. Toss it into an old pillowcase, and then tumble dry for 15 to 30 minutes. Once it’s done, you’ll have a water-resistant bag for a fraction of the price of an off-the-shelf one.

It’s also cool to just buy a cheap waterproof bag, but they are often less versatile and good looking as canvas bags. Waxing bags to keep water out isn’t anything new, and you’ll probably have to periodically refresh the wax coat as it wears, but it’s definitely a nice cheap way to keep your gear from getting soaked.

Luxford St’s LEGO Block Bag: Not Official, Still Officially Awesome

I have to say that even though I’m no longer a kid, I still love LEGO bricks. They are great for building pretty much anything you get your mind set on, and you don’t always need the fancy kits to make great stuff. This LEGO bag isn’t official LEGO merch, but that doesn’t make it any less awesome.

luxford st lego brick bag

The LEGO Block Bag is supposed to be scale replica of a yellow LEGO brick, made from 100% cotton denim, with an unbleached creamy yarn running through it. There are little flecks of brown and cream, giving the denim a colorful variation throughout its surface. The bag is big enough to carry around a couple of gadgets and books – or a few hundred LEGO blocks.

Sadly, this particular bag sold about two weeks ago, but there are other LEGO-inspired items available from Karen Booker’s Luxford St. Etsy shop.

Micro Scooter Luggage Helps Make Airports Less Boring, More Dangerous

Airports aren’t much fun, especially if your flight is delayed or you are rushing to make a connecting flight. That’s one of the reasons why this scooter luggage looks pretty cool. You can scoot around, with a coffee in one hand and making your way through the sea of people sauntering slowly to their gates.

micro scooter luggage

Micro Scooter Luggage was developed by Kickboard in collaboration with Samsonite and has a hard-side construction. Its 26L capacity and folding handle make it an approved carry-on. But its main feature is the three-wheeled, folding scooter board attached to the bottom of the bag.

I don’t know what the TSA will say about this thing, and how they’ll respond when you scoot up to security – probably with a full cavity search, but it looks like a smart and fun idea anyhow.

It costs $249.99(USD) and is available at the Kickboard’s US website, or on Amazon.

Dragonscale Bag of Holding

Do you love all things that have to do with RPGs? Well, if you have answered in the affirmative then you might be interested to know that there is this $79.99 Dragonscale Bag of Holding which will certainly come in handy to tote around your earthly possessions – at least some of it. You could say that it contains far more style compared to all of the other man bags out there, and since it is made out of “dragonhide” PVC leather, your brain will tell you that it is far more cavernous than originally thought.

Capable of holding laptops of up to 17″ in size, tablets, books, folders, old tomes that carry spells of yore, dice, scrolls, and potions are definitely no match for it – not to mention it will more than welcome modern day items such as pens, cables and smartphones. For those who feel that their social life is down in the dumps, you could say that the Dragonscale Bag of Holding is capable of delivering +5 to your Charisma, now how about that? By the way, no dragons were harmed in the making of this bag.

Watershed Big Creek Backpack: Keep Your Precious Gear Safe from the Elements

I get paranoid sometimes when I am carrying around some of my fancier electronics. It’s not that I’m worried about getting mugged, it’s more a question of getting them wet, because we all know that water and gizmos don’t really gel.

watershed big creek backpack

Most of the waterproof backpacks I know are quite simple because any stitching will reduce the integrity of the waterproof material and has to be properly sealed. The Watershed Big Creek isn’t just a dry bag, it’s an amply-sized 24L backpack with comfortable, padded shoulder straps. The bag measures 24″ x 10″ x 6″ and is made out of nylon coated with polyurethane. In place of a traditional zipper, the bag has a ZipDry closure that works kind of like a Ziploc bag to keep all moisture out.

The styling might be an acquired taste, but it has a militaristic look that’s not unpleasing. The Big Creek sells for $106(USD) directly from Watershed in a number of different colors, as well as a camo design for about $32 extra.

Fire Extinguisher Bag is Smokin’ Hot

While firefighting gear isn’t exactly the most stylish and comfortable stuff to wear, I think we can make an exception for this cool bag, made up to look like a fire extinguisher.

fire extinguisher bag

It’s made by the artisans at Russia’s KruKru Studio, using 100% wool felt. The 21″+ long red canister has ample capacity for your small personal accessories, wallet, keys, gadgets, etc. – and you can be pretty confident that they’ll never catch on fire if you’re transporting them inside of an extinguisher. The bag has a nice long strap, and can be worn either like a messenger bag, or carried as a large purse.

This unique and whimsical piece can be found over on Etsy for $150(USD), where pyromaniacs can also find a matching bag that looks like a gas can.
