Always the Fashionista: Barbie Gets a Digital Dress to Keep up With the Times

With real-world dolls getting LEDs installed and embedded into their gowns, it was only a matter of time before Barbie upgraded her own wardrobe to include these futuristic digital threads.

Barbie Digital Dress

Barbie might have taken a back seat over the last few years, but she’s fighting to get into the spotlight once again. Keeping up with the times and with her Hollywood counterparts, Mattel has decided to dress Barbie up in a digital dress that’s as futuristic as dresses can get.

The dress incorporates the latest in LED and touchscreen technology, allowing girls to choose which digital designs they want to appear on the front of the dress. They can either choose from pre-programmed graphics, draw their own designs, or watch designs respond to sound and music stimuli.

The Barbie Digital Dress doll will be available this August for $49.99 (USD).

Barbie Digital Makeover Mirror

Barbie Digital Makeover Mirror Little girls have their toys as well, but here is something that you might want to check out for those who are more tech-oriented, with the unveiling of the Barbie Digital Makeover Mirror that happened at the International Toy Fair by Mattel just last week. This unique toy for the modern day girl will be able to be paired up with an iPad, where it sports a vanity mirror that delivers augmented reality play. This allows little girls to try on different shades of lipstick, eye shadow and glitter, all without having to use up mom’s supply, and more importantly, not to make a mess out of things.

The Barbie Digital Makeover Mirror does seem to be a decent tool to use in makeup stores too, don’t you think so? After all, it allows consumers to try on different products, seeing how it looks on them before they make the final purchase decision. Not only that, it sure as heck saves a whole lot on tissue paper and makeup remover, since one is able to wipe it off easily and start again. The Barbie Digital Makeover Mirror will retail for $69.99 a pop as it goes on sale this August.

Mattel goes all in on AR for 2013

Mattel goes all in on AR for 2013

At last year’s Toy Fair, Mattel was all about Apptivity. The line of figures that interact with an iPad didn’t exactly revolutionize the industry. But, the company isn’t giving up on the concept. In 2013 it’s evolving and moving from action figures that you drag across a screen, to much more interactive augmented reality concepts. Rather than simply slapping a capacitive pad on the bottom of a toy, this next-gen version focuses first on delivering a solid analog experience, then enhances it by actually using the considerable computing power made available by the iPad. To give the new series the best chance possible at succeeding, three of the biggest brands in the Mattel stable will be first to make the jump: Barbie, Disney and Hot Wheels. So what does 2013 hold for the venerable toy maker? Head on after the break to find out.

World’s First Official Barbie Cafe Dolls up Taiwan

Well, Mattel finally went out and did it. Open a Barbie-themed cafe, I mean. It’s located in Taiwan and is, as expected, fitted with furniture in various shades of pink that’ll drive any man crazy and any Barbie-loving girl equally nuts.

Barbie CafeThe Barbie Cafe serves up dainty little crustless finger sandwiches with tiny pink flags stuck into each one of them. The waiters wear pink aprons, while waitresses flit about in pink tutus like the ones that the Barbie dolls on the table have on.

So why Taiwan? A rep from Mattel explained that theme restaurants have been very popular and successful in the state.

Just looking at everything – from the sticky sweet food and decor to the people and ambiance – is enough to make me go into a diabetic coma. To push that point further, here’s a video featuring the Barbie Cafe in all its pink splendor. Boys, avert your eyes.

Griffin and Crayola intro contactfree Light Marker, more virtual crayon accessories

Griffin and Crayola are already best of friends through their ColorStudio HD collaboration for the iPad. They’re deepening that relationship at CES with a handful of iPad accessories and apps based around the quintessential crayon. Heading up the pack, the Crayola Light Marker you see above upgrades the earlier input by letting kids draw in the air; they can splatter (thankfully virtual) paint and play other games without scribbling directly on the tablet’s screen. A pair of cradles are joining the marker, including the Digital Activity Center portable lap desk (after the break) and the briefcase-like Color & Play Workstation. The software side is being rounded out with special Barbie and Hot Wheels versions of the ColorStudio HD app, each of which has drawings themed around the perennial favorite toys. Griffin expects the Light Marker, Digital Activity Center and Color & Play Workstation to reach young artists’ hands in the spring for $30, $40 and $20 respectively; the specialized iPad apps should arrive later in January, each for $3.

Weeping Angel Barbie: Don’t Blink!

Whatever you do Ken, don’t blink. If you are in the Malibu Beach House soaking up the sun’s rays by the pool, or riding along with Barbie in her convertible, don’t do it. Not even for an instant. Always keep your eyes on Barbie – and keep them wide open.

While I’m sure that Barbies must have been turned into weeping angels before at some point, you have to admire the dedication and the quality of Sarah Franz-Wichlacz’s work here. But if Sarah is making weeping angels, does that make her Doctor Who’s greatest foe?

Anatomical Barbie Looks Cool But Might Freak Your Kids Out

Koen Hauser gave his subjects the anatomical treatment and his human models couldn’t look any creepier. Now it’s Barbie’s turn.

In the eyes of many kids (mostly girls), she’s the perfect doll. She’s pretty, she’s sexy, and she’s got a hunky boyfriend named Ken. And she’s “human” too – well, sort of.

Anatomical BarbieShe won’t come to life, but artist Jason Freeny shows everyone that she’s got a skeleton and intestines just like you and I do. But is it just me, or is anatomical Barbie still prettier than the average anatomical human?

Anatomical Barbie1

This hand-sculpted model of Barbie with her insides showing on one side is Freeny’s latest handiwork and it looks pretty awesome, don’t you think? Prints available in his shop.
