iPhone 5 PowerSkin Silicone Battery Case Now Shipping

If you’re an iPhone 5 user looking for a case to protect your device and in need of extra battery life, PowerSkin has announced a new product is now shipping. The product is called the PowerSkin for Apple iPhone 5 and is made from soft silicone.

The case leaves all of the phone’s controls open and available for use, and its maker promises that the iPhone 5 version is its thinnest design ever, adding only 0.3-inches of additional thickness to the iPhone 5. The case measures 2.5 x .65 x 5.1-inches and weighs only 0.18 pounds. That means that not only is the case incredibly thin, it’s also very light. Despite the fact that the case is very thin and light, it adds 1500 mAh of power to your smartphone. That means you can talk for an extra 6.5 hours, use Wi-Fi for an extra eight hours, and the phone will last on standby for an extra 182 hours.

The PowerSkin for iPhone 5 is available right now for $79.99(USD).

Nokia 105 Dumbphone Lasts 35 Days on a Single Charge

There are many reasons why people love their smartphones. They provide a seamless blend of communication and computing, are easy to use, and always with you. However, there are times when simple cell phones are still useful, especially when it comes to battery life.

The Nokia 105 was presented at the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, and it’s their most affordable phone up to date. It costs only €15 (~$20 USD) and it was intended for the first-time cell phone buyers. It comes with a bright screen, clear menus, and features like an FM radio, multiple alarm clocks, a dust and splash-proof keypad, as well as a flashlight.

Its most important feature is that it can last up to 35 days on a single charge – though it’s not clear how much of that is talk time and how much is standby time. This phone is definitely something useful to have as a backup device, in case of an emergency.

PowerSkin for iPhone 5 now available

Back during CES, we mentioned that PowerSkin was working on a number of external battery cases for the Apple iPhone line. Not too long ago we talked about the company’s PoP’n case that sticks to the back of the iPhone 5. If you didn’t like the idea of a battery hanging off the back of your smartphone, you may prefer the PowerSkin case that is now available.

powerskin-ip5

This is the classic PowerSkin case made in a form factor specifically for the iPhone 5. The case will protect the iPhone 5 from scratches and drops thanks to a one-piece silicone case design that wraps all the way around the iPhone. The internal battery has 1500 mAh of power.

PowerSkin promises that the case will extend talk time up to 6.5 hours, extend Wi-Fi usage up to eight hours, and expand standby time up to 182 hours. The case measures 2.5 x .65 x 5.1-inches and weighs 0.18 pounds. That means the case shouldn’t add significantly to the weight or bulk of the iPhone in your pocket.

The battery inside the case will begin to charge the iPhone 5 at the press of a button. The case also ships with an earphone extender for the Apple headphones included with the iPhone 5 and any other 3.5 mm headphones. The case is available and shipping right now for $79.99.

Panasonic – Emergency light that can run on any size battery – BF-BM10

Another product that would really be useful in the event of an emergency such as a major earthquake is this emergency light by Panasonic.
When there is an emergency, stocks of supplies are often low, if non-existent. Two years ago after the earthquake in Japan, stocks such as water and food were low. And so were batteries as there were rolling blackouts throughout Japan.
This light takes any size batteries, truly making it convenient in the case of an emergency. If only a mixed assortment of …

Boeing touts a ‘permanent’ fix for 787 Dreamliner batteries, Japan stays cautious

Boeing says it has a 'permanent' fix for 787 Dreamliner batteries, Japan remains cautious

There’s been talk for weeks of Boeing developing a fix for the 787 Dreamliner’s battery fire troubles. If the aircraft maker has its way, that should soon translate to action. The company’s commercial airplane chief, Raymond Conner, tells reporters that the company has a “permanent” fix that would place three layers of protection around the batteries and, theoretically, head off fires and their causes. It sounds like just the ticket — the challenge will be getting everyone else to feel the same way. American investigators believe the batteries are at fault, but their Japanese counterparts haven’t yet ruled out external factors. With this kind of ongoing debate, we’re not about to book a 787 to Tokyo for spring break.

PowerSkin Battery Case Gets it PoP’n

PowerSkin has been making cases to extend the battery life of various smartphones for a while. The company has now announced a new battery case that sucks. No seriously, it uses suction cups to stick to the back of your smartphone. The case is available in two different styles to fit the iPhone 5 and other devices and is called the PoP’n.

PowerSkinpopn

The iPhone 5 case has an Apple Lightning connector and is available in black or white colors. That iPhone 5 version sells for $79.99 (USD). The other version has a micro USB connector and is designed to work with various Android smartphones. The micro-USB version sells for $69.99.

Other than the connector, both versions have the same specifications with a 2000 mAh battery inside promising up to 70% more talk time. The battery device measures 5″(h) x 2.2″(w) x 0.41(d) and weighs 0.4 pounds. Both versions are available to order right now. PowerSkin plans on offering red and pink versions of the case in the future.

Airbus to skip lithium-ion batteries in new planes

After the recent fiasco with the new Boeing 787 Dreamliners and their melting lithium-ion batteries, it seems that Airbus won’t be taking any chances and will be dropping lithium-ion batteries when building their new A350 aircraft. The airplane manufacturer is afraid that regulatory uncertainties will delay production of its new plane.

airbus-a350

However, Airbus says that the reason for not using these unpredictable lithium-ion batteries has nothing to do with safety concerns, but rather scheduling and the possible delay of the A350 aircrafts, which are expected to ship to airlines sometime during the summer next year. Airbus says that they don’t want the ongoing battery investigation to interfere with their production schedule.

Airbus will switch back to traditional nickel-cadmium batteries in the A350, mostly because the technology has been proven solid over the years, and they believe in the safety of the tried-and-true batteries. Of course, Boeing’s bold step toward lithium-ion technology was unprecedented and an ultimate game-changer, but it was a risk that ended up turning sour for the airplane manufacturer.

Airbus expects its new A350 to make its first test flight sometime this summer, and it will then undergo further test flights over the year. The manufacturer plans to seek certification from European aviation authorities by early 2014, with an expected launch date of summer 2014, where the new plane will finally be ferrying passengers around the world.

WSJ: Airbus to drop lithium-ion batteries from A350 to meet delivery schedule

Airbus dropping lithiumion batteries from the A350 in the interest of timeliness

Amidst the ongoing brouhaha over rival Boeing‘s Dreamliner-grounding battery troubles, Airbus has decided not to use lithium-ion batteries in its newest aircraft, the A350, according to industry officials cited by the Wall Street Journal. The European plane maker is said to be making the change in an effort to stick to its plan of pressing the jet into commercial service by the middle of next year. While the craft’s early test flights this summer will still make use of four lithium-ion batteries for on-ground electrical power and as backup in the air as originally intended, it will be delivered to airlines with conventional nickel-cadmium batteries instead. Safety considerations are undoubtedly part of the picture, but since the A350 is already behind schedule by a couple of years, its manufacturer can’t afford any further delays — anticipated in case regulators find fault with the use of lithium-ion packs in flights. As Boeing struggles to find a fix and get the 787 back into the air, it seems Airbus has taken the easy way out.

PowerSkin PoP’n Review: Apple certified iPhone 5 battery coolness

It’s high time you got some external battery solutions for that brand new iPhone 5, isn’t it? Why not have a peek at this fancy little monster from PoP’n, brand new to the market this week and ready for action with Apple-Certified Lightning connection for your current-gen Apple products. Of course it’s made specifically for the iPhone 5, so we’ll be having a peek at that first – but note that this battery pack comes in different iterations as well: microUSB being one of them.

bottom

In the future you’ll see this device with HTC-compatible microUSB connectors as well as Apple 30-pin connectors for iPhone and iPods and iPads before this current generation, but for now, it’s all about microUSB for everyone else and Lightning for the iPhone 5. With this device you’ll find an extremely light and smooth battery pack with a rubbery, flexible bottom tail that reaches down and back up to your iPhone.

The back of this pack is covered with suction cups so it can easily attach to your iPhone without effort, the whole thing ending up being short enough for you to be able to work with your back-facing camera with ease. This pack contains 2000mAh of battery power and has a set of 4 LED lights near the top above a button you can press to see how much juice you’ve got left for the day. With the iPhone 5 already giving me nearly a full-day’s juice each average weekday, this pack is more than enough to suffice for the rest.

You’ll be re-charging the pack with an included microUSB cord that you’ll connect to your computer’s USB port (or a wall converter if you’ve got one handy). The whole pack will cost you a cool $79.99 USD if you’re getting the Apple Lightning connector version or $69.99 for the microUSB edition, and they’re available in two colors for now (black and white) with more iterations coming in the near future. Red and Pink on the way – time for a belated Valentine’s Day gift!
