Phones4U taking BlackBerry Q10 pre-orders, giving away PlayBooks to first 300 customers (update)

Phones4U taking BlackBerry Q10 preorders, giving away PlayBooks to first 300 customers

Know what’s better than a shiny new BlackBerry Q10? A BlackBerry Q10 with a 64GB PlayBook thrown in for free, and Phones4U is the place to get it. To be clear, the UK retailer has begun taking pre-orders for the BB10 handset with a hardware keyboard today, and the first 300 folks to pledge their money will get one of BlackBerry’s 7-inch slates for free along with it. As for the Q10’s cost, it’s £36 a month on contract or £549.95 SIM-free, with the black model expected to arrive by the end of April and the alabaster version coming in the weeks after.

Update: Should you miss out on the Phones4U deal (or just don’t want a PlayBook), you can head on over to the Carphone Warehouse to place your pre-order and get a free Bluetooth speaker to pair with your Q10 instead.

BlackBerry Z10 users can Gogo to Delta for free in-flight WiFi

BlackBerry Z10 users can Gogo to Delta for free inflight WiFi

Dangling WiFi-carrot meet your BlackBerry-made stick: the Z10. Perhaps because its user base has traditionally courted strong enterprise support — a lot that typically overlaps with the jet set — BlackBerry’s offering an incentive to adopters of its BB 10 pearl, granting gratis Gogo-powered internet access for all domestic Delta flights. The best part? Latching onto that free WiFi is as simple as logging in and firing up the browser on your Z10 when it’s “safe to use your electronic devices.” Will this tip your hand and get you to switch to BB 10? Probably not, but it’s the sort of pot sweetening that should keep BlackBerry’s (moneyed) customers around for the long-haul.

[Thanks, Jared]

Looks Like Those 1M Mystery BlackBerry 10 Devices Went To A Verizon Distributor

blackberry

BlackBerry delivered one of the world’s most mysterious press releases a short time ago when it revealed that it had sold a cool 1 million BB10 devices to an unnamed partner, but now it looks like some sleuthing has turned up the real client. AllThingsD and Detwiler Fenton both report that the likely source of the order was Brightstar, an international distribution company that counts Verizon, along with carriers around the world as its partners.

Brightstar is an established BlackBerry customer, and distributes handsets from the Waterloo manufacturer in some of its strongest markets, including in countries like Malaysia where BlackBerry retains very high popularity. Brightstar’s order (if indeed this is the client in question) would indeed be the largest ever single order of BlackBerry devices, but it’s also potentially a way for companies like Verizon to make a sizable bet on the company’s brand new OS and hardware, without taking on all the risk for such an order itself.

Detwiler Fenton says that the move indicates “Verizon doesn’t believe this well be a strong seller since it normally tries to allocate hot product on its own,” and that using Brightstar means it will spread out some of the responsibility and potential reward that comes with placing inventory in big-box retail locations like Best Buy, in exchange for the security of not being left solely on the hook should things go south. The U.S. launch of BlackBerry 10 happened last Friday, and while not all the cards are on the table, there’s still some early reason to believe things didn’t go amazingly well.

BlackBerry has its earnings coming up this week on Thursday, but sales of BB10 devices in the U.S. won’t be included in or influence the results. Still, stock price is down today after last weekend’s launch failed to garner the kind of high-profile success and buzz associated with new hardware from Apple or Samsung.

That million is still a big number, and a sizable order. But if Detwiler Fenton is accurate in its report and this involved carriers like Verizon placing an order through their distribution partner, it’s a lot less significant than were it to go to a single buyer. We’ve contacted RIM for comment, but they did not respond by time of publication.

BlackBerry Travel for BB 10 launches, lets users track price changes and flight status

BlackBerry Travel

Though the road to BlackBerry 10 was long, it doesn’t appear the company’s taking the same tack with its app strategy. Today, the BlackBerry World store gains yet another native app: BlackBerry Travel. While the application’s nothing new for Waterloo, it has been updated take advantage of BB 10, giving users the ability to log in seamlessly with their BlackBerry ID, share flight and trip status to social networks (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, BBM) and monitor price changes for hotel bookings. As with all new BB 10 apps, it’s set to rollout to BlackBerry World within 24 hours. So, if you don’t see it yet, relax — it’s on the way.
