New BlackBerry Survey Gauges Interest Of BBM For Desktop

New BlackBerry Survey Gauges Interest Of BBM For DesktopWouldn’t it be cool if you could send BBM messages from your desktop instead of having to keep switching back to your phone? As it stands Apple’s iMessage allows that if you’re using their Mac OS X operating system, and during BlackBerry Jam Asia 2013, BlackBerry demoed something similar as well, although there was no mention if and when such a feature would be arriving. However it seems that BlackBerry is considering that feature very seriously because in the latest survey sent out by BlackBerry for their BlackBerry Link 1.2 software.

Basically what the survey wanted to know is what sort of features both new and existing users of the software should be included in future updates for the PC and Mac platforms, and one of the questions was related to BBM and SMS integration. Of course there’s no telling if BlackBerry will ever incorporate such features, but given that BBM is no longer an exclusive to the BlackBerry platform and has made its way onto iOS and Android, giving these users the option to send messages through their computers and not just their phones could make them more receptive to using BlackBerry’s software.

Of course this does not really benefit BlackBerry financially since BBM is free, although with plans to monetize it in the future, having more users on board will no doubt be a great selling point for future clients looking to advertise through its BBM Channels feature. What do you guys think? BBM for the desktop, yay or nay?

BBM For Android Gets BBM Channels And Voice Chat Albeit In Beta

BBM For Android Gets BBM Channels And Voice Chat Albeit In Beta

BlackBerry has one thing going for it right now and that’s BBM. Ever since the once iconic messaging client was opened up to iOS and Android, it brought in over 40 million new users. The stats continue to go up and the company is committed to bringing it at par with its rivals. While BBM on BlackBerry’s own devices offer greater features right now, some of those features are bound to make their way to iOS and Android. The company has released a new beta of BBM for Android which brings BBM Channels as well as voice chat.

Voice chat will definitely bring BBM at par with its rivals such as Viber and Skype, even though they have significantly larger user bases. Baby steps are what BlackBerry is taking right now in order to make BBM a true competitor in the ever competitive cross-platform messaging arena. BBM Channels are basically a social network of sorts. Users can create their own channels or follow ones made by their favorite brands, companies, personalities etc. They are able to post messages on that channel as well as share pictures, messages and more through it. Those interested in testing out the beta need to sign up for the BlackBerry Beta Zone first.

BBM For BlackBerry 10 Beta Features Real Time Location Sharing And Voice Notes

BBM For BlackBerry 10 Beta Features Real Time Location Sharing And Voice Notes

If BlackBerry has anything going for it right now, its certainly BBM. The once iconic BlackBerry exclusive messaging service was opened up to iOS and Android earlier this year and it gained a lot of popularity. 20 million people signed up in the first week alone, whereas BlackBerry Messenger was able to pull in 40 million new users overall across both platforms. The company is committed to BBM and continues to improve it, the latest BBM for BlackBerry 10 has been rolled out in a limited public beta and it comes with two major new features.

The first major feature that BBM for BlackBerry 10 brings is real time voice notes. Sending voices notes is now extremely easy through BBM beta on BB10, users simply need to press a button, speak up and release the button to send. The voice notes move fast, its almost akin to having push-to-talk enabled on the smartphone. Glympse is the second major feature included in this beta BBM build. It lets a BBM contact access your location in real time for a specified duration after which the location becomes private again. It is not known when this BBM build will be out of beta and will be released publicly for all BlackBerry 10 users. It is certainly going to take a lot of time before this feature is brought over to iOS and Android. [Image via Berryreview]

2014 BBM Gets Voice Chat And Channels

2014 BBM Gets Voice Chat And ChannelsI am quite sure that there was plenty of buzz surrounding the release of BBM when it was first released to cater to both iOS as well as Android mobile operating systems in October earlier this year. Well, while October has come and gone, the number of features available on BBM for iOS and Android are not exactly what you would call complete, but fret not, the folks over at BlackBerry are not quite done with BBM yet, as they intend to introduce more features into BBM for iOS and Android next year, and not just for the app itself.

The most significant changes which Android and iOS users will enjoy include BBM Voice and BBM Channels. BBM Voice is similar to the likes of Skype or Google Hangouts, letting you talk to your contacts without having to use up your minutes, while Channels would be BlackBerry’s take where social networks are concerned. Right now, BBM users on BB10 are already enjoying both features, so it is nice to see the rest of BBM’s users across different platforms being up to speed with the latest version. Considering how 2014 is not too far away, I suppose you could call this a belated Christmas present from BlackBerry. [Press Release]

New LG Smartphones To Ship With BBM Pre-Installed

New LG Smartphones To Ship With BBM Pre Installed

It took a long time for BlackBerry to figure out that to preserve its once iconic messaging service, it had to open BBM to other platforms. The company finally did this a few months back and the initial response was great, with over 20 million users signing up across iOS and Android in the first week alone. The momentum might have slowed down since then, but BlackBerry remains committed to competing against behemoths like WhatsApp and Viber. It has scored another win, LG has agreed to pre-install BBM on its new smartphones in a variety of markets around the world.

The LG G Pro Lite will be the first smartphone from the Korean manufacturer to come with BBM straight out of the box. Andrew Bocking, EVP for BBM at BlackBerry said that the company is extremely pleased that LG is going to bring a seamless BBM experience to their customers with the G Pro Lite “in key markets.” He doesn’t go into detail about the markets where BBM will come pre-installed on LG smartphones. That said, BlackBerry reiterates its commitment to the messenger and says that it will continue to evolve for both iOS and Android in the coming months. This isn’t the first OEM deal that BlackBerry has secured, it already has a similar arrangement in place with various OEMs that exclusively service markets such as India, Indonesia, Latin America and the Middle East, where BlackBerry still holds its weight.

Kik Reaches 100 Million Users, Adds 200,000 Each Day

Kik Reaches 100 Million Users, Adds 200,000 Each Day

There is no shortage of cross-platform instant messaging applications. There’s market leader WhatsApp with over 350 million users and then there are other strong players such as Viber, Line, Kik etc all of which have seen substantial growth in recent years. Even BlackBerry Messenger saw a surge in its user base once it was finally opened up to iOS and Android. Kik has achieved a major milestone, CEO Ted Livingston announced today that the service has crossed 100 million users and it is substantially growing as over 200,000 new users are added every single day.

Kik sees greater penetration in the U.S. because according to the CEO, over fifty percent of its entire user base lives in the U.S. Referencing recent numbers released by app analytics firm Distimo, Livingston also said that Kik now gets more downloads in the U.S. than WhatsApp. He believes one of the reason why Kik is becoming so popular is because users don’t have to sign up with their phone numbers. So if they want to add someone on Kik they don’t have to reveal their number. It is the exact same premise that BlackBerry promoted when it made BBM cross-platform, funny thing is, Livingston pitched the idea of taking BBM cross-platform to company executives when he worked at BlackBerry but he was shot down. He launched Kik instead, and the rest as they say is history.

BBM Used For Customer Service In The Middle East

BBM Used For Customer Service In The Middle EastBlackBerry’s BBM app has always been pretty popular and we suppose its exclusiveness helped play a part back then, but now that it has made its way onto iOS and Android platforms, recent studies have found that the app still managed to retain its popularity, especially amongst certain Asia countries to the point where  it seems that customer service for a particular company in the Middle East has turned to using BBM to help keep in touch with customers as well as address any problems or enquiries that they might have. This is according to a tweet by @shahriyarali who wrote on his Twitter account, “Middle East now running customer care service on BBM for stores.”

When it comes to customer service usually a hotline is provided, or an email address. Sometimes there are some websites which even have customer service representatives chatting with you live to address your queries, so be able to reach out via BBM is definitely a pretty uncommon sight! We’re not sure if this is such a good idea, especially since whoever is using the phone will have their hands full replying to customers all the time, but at the end of the day it’s like getting paid to chat at work which isn’t such a bad thing, right?

BBM Shows Signs Of Popularity In India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines

BBM Shows Signs Of Popularity In India, Indonesia, Malaysia, PhilippinesBBM for iOS and Android was released in October and so far we’ve seen some success from the app, such as it experiencing an impressive 5 million downloads within 8 hours of its launch, and with the app rising to the number 2 spot on the iTunes App Store shortly after its release, however it seems that the success of the app could be limited to certain regions. According to Distimo, they have been keeping an eye on the cross-platform version of BBM for iOS and based on their findings, it seems that over in countries such as India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, BBM has no problems holding its own against the likes of LINE, WeChat, KakaoTalk, and Viber.

However over in countries such as China, Japan, and Korean, BBM has yet to make a significant impact and are clearly dominated by the competition. In a way this isn’t surprising as BlackBerry devices have been popular in regions such as Indonesia, India, Malaysia, and the Philippines (Thailand as well, but oddly enough they weren’t listed in Distimo’s survey), so it could be that former BlackBerry users who might have made the switch to iOS wanted to remain in touch with BlackBerry friends, or perhaps preferred the more familiar interface that is BBM, could explain the app’s popularity.

BlackBerry Likely To Replace Hardware Business With Software Services [Rumor]

BlackBerry Likely To Replace Hardware Business With Software Services [Rumor]

BlackBerry finally took down its “for sale” sign last month after endless speculation about its future. The company didn’t go private as many expected it to, rather it took a $1 billion institutional investment and shuffled top management. Now, all eyes are on BlackBerry’s performance in the coming quarters. While new CEO John S. Chen says that the company is returning to its roots of enterprise management and devices, a new report from Digitimes suggests that BlackBerry is likely to replace its ailing core hardware business with software services.

Its no surprise that BlackBerry’s hardware division has burnt through a lot of cash, cash that the company desperately needs. All of the devices released in 2013 failed to generate enough revenue for the company, which had to take a $1 billion hit due to unsold Z10 inventory. Citing “industry watchers,” the report claims that the hardware business might be replaced with software service because of the increasing popularity of BBM on iOS and Android. In its first week alone, the service added 20 million new BBM users from the rival platforms. Moreover, BlackBerry recently partnered up with various Android OEMs to have BBM pre-installed on their devices. The company also said that its going to focus more on enterprise solutions from now on, and while Chen has already said that currently there are no plans to shut down the hardware business, who knows what 2014 will bring.

BlackBerry Announces BBM Partnership With Several Android OEMs

BlackBerry Announces BBM Partnership With Several Android OEMsWhile BBM is pretty established as far as messaging apps are concerned, it does have some pretty stiff competition in the form of WhatsApp, LINE,Viber, and etc., all of which have established themselves on iOS and Android operating systems for years. Well it looks like BlackBerry could be making up for lost time as the company has recently announced that they have managed to partner up with several Android manufacturers who will ensure that the BBM app, as far as Android devices are concerned, will come preinstalled on said devices.

According to BlackBerry’s press release, these OEMs are from the Africa, India, Indonesia, Latin America and the Middle East region, with names that some of you guys may or may not be familiar with such as, Be, Brightstar, Celkon, EVERCOSS, IMO, Micromax, Mito, Snexian, Spice, TECNO, TiPhone and Zen. While BlackBerry would undoubtedly benefit greater from partnering with companies such as Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG, and Sony, who are some of the bigger names in the Android industry, we guess this is a good start and perhaps in the future more Android OEMs will be hopping aboard the BBM bandwagon.
