Berlin Is Threatened From Below By Its Rising Water Table

While the American West stumbles forward into an already dangerous drought —and it’s barely even summer—Berliners are simply not using enough water. This means that the city’s water table is now on the rise, and it’s beginning to threaten the city’s buildings from below. Some basements have already been affected.

Hardware Alley At Disrupt Europe 2013: Connected Home, Connected Car And More

TechCrunch Disrupt Europe 2013 wrapped up in Berlin yesterday, but the show lives on in memory, and in video. Here’s a look at the companies that took part in our Hardware Alley exhibition, including some familiar to TechCrunch readers like Tado and Occipital Labs.

There’s also a company that wants to put electrical vehicle chargers in every lightpost, and one that makes a Fitbit for delivery and other industrial/commercial drivers. And a car that was maybe 3D printed? I still can’t really figure it out. But I sat in it, whatever it was.

Overall, Disrupt Europe had some of the most impressive and fully-formed hardware and gadgets I’ve ever witnessed at a Hardware Alley exhibition, and I think it’s telling that we also had a hardware startup (Lock8) win the Disrupt Europe 2013 Startup Battlefield. Europe’s got gadget fever, and the only cure is more hardware startups.

Last Chance To Sign Up For Hardware Alley In Berlin

Hardware Alley is my favorite part of Disrupt and we’re bringing the festivities to Berlin on October 29 when 30 lucky hardware companies can show off their wares. It is a crowd favorite and I’d love to feature your gear. You only have five days to join us!

What is Hardware Alley? It’s a celebration of hardware startups (and other cool gear makers) that features everything from robotic drones to 3D printers. We try to bring in an eclectic mix of amazing exhibitors and I think you’ll agree that our previous Alleys have been roaring successes.

We’d like you to register as a Hardware Alley exhibitor. You’ll get to exhibit on the last day of Disrupt Europe, show off your goods and get access to some of the most interesting people (and most interesting VCs) in the world. We’d love to have you. Do you have to be a hardware startup? No, but it definitely helps. We want everyone involved and we want to see what Europe is building.

All you need to demo is a laptop. TechCrunch provides you with: 30″ round cocktail table, linens, table top sign, inclusion in program agenda and website, exhibitor WiFi, and press list.

You can reserve your spot by purchasing a Hardware Alley Exhibitor Package.

If you are Kickstarting your project now or bootstrapping, please contact me at john@techcrunch.com with the subject line “HARDWARE ALLEY.” I will do my best to accommodate you but understand we have a limited number of discounts available so act quickly.

We want startups from across Europe so please let me know what you’re up to and if you’re coming. I’m very excited to see the great hardware coming out of the Old Country.

We’re live from IFA 2013 in Berlin!

We're live from IFA 2013 in Berlin!

We’ve just wormed our way inside Messe Berlin’s cavernous halls for IFA, where we’re expecting to see a deluge of fresh hardware that’ll include smartphones with 4K-recording chops and at least one smartwatch of note. ASUS, Samsung and Sony are holding their respective press events tomorrow, and we’re pretty confident we’ll see the rumored Honami from Hirai and Co., along with the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear from JK Shin and friends. On Thursday, Haier, Lenovo, LG and Panasonic will keep the announcements coming with their round of reveals. Finally, Friday will round out our time at the show with keynotes from Sprint CEO Dan Hesse and Ford’s own head honcho, Alan Mullaly. To stay on top of all the unveilings, keep your browser trained on our IFA 2013 hub.

LG IPS 21:9 UltraWide All-In-One PC unveiled at IFA 2013

lg-ips-monitorThe larger, the better. That is more or less the mantra of many people. After all, just take a look at our surroundings – the rich do want ever larger mansions, not to mention bigger bank vaults to hoard ever increasing earthly treasure, while workers want bigger pay packets to bring home. Fast food restaurants always want you to upsize your meals for a dollar or two, but are all of those really necessary? However, when it comes to work and the well being of your health, perhaps “larger is better” is a mantra that is worth following where the desktop computer is concerned. LG might be on to something here with the unveiling of their LG IPS 21:9 UltraWide All-In-One PC (also known as model V960) at IFA 2013 in Berlin, Germany.

This is the latest addition that will further expand the cinematically proportioned display range. The IPS 21:9 UltraWide All-In-One PC is proud to be classified as “an advanced desktop” which is said to pack in enough punch to deliver all the advantages of a 21:9 monitor, without the added bulk of another computer chassis placed somewhere in your room. The V960 will be powered by Microsoft’s Windows 8 as the operating system of choice, hence offering a full-fledged PC experience that will be accompanied by a NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M GPU for advanced graphics processing. After all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so that GeForce GT 640M GPU ought to be a relief for gamers and users who want high quality graphical performance on their machine.

Other features of the V960 include picture-in-picture (PIP) functionality, so that you can multitask – for instance, checking up on the latest stock prices while watching a TV channel simultaneously. Apart from that LG’s AIO PC will ship with a keyboard and mouse so that you can get started right out of the box. There is still no word on pricing or regional availability as at press time, but we do hope to hear more about those aspects soon.
