Western Digital WD TV Live HD media player gets official

Hope you didn’t spend your well-earned shekels on a WD TV Mini — it turns out that the HD-less wonder was just a waypoint to Western Digital’s latest. The WD TV Live HD media player is an unassuming sort that doesn’t really offer any surprises: 1080p video playback, support for all your favorite codecs, both Pandora and Live365 Internet radio apps, WiFi, two USB ports for external storage, HDMI, composite and component video outputs, SPDIF audio output, and more. No big whoop, right? All this can be yours for an MSRP of $149.99, but we hear that Best Buy has ’em for $119 — and we wouldn’t want you to pay any more than that. PR after the break.

Update: “That’s WiFi ready.” As in “WiFi adapter sold separately.”

New Western Digital WD TV Live media player hits Best Buy

We’d been hearing that Western Digital was about to update its WD TV set-top media player lineup, and it looks like that leaked WD TV-2 has turned into the WD TV Live on the way to Best Buy. Nothing here too out of the ordinary — wide codec support, Dolby Digital and DTS decoders, HDMI out, and an Ethernet jack for DLNA streaming and accessing YouTube, Flickr, and Pandora make this one a solid buy at $119 if you need it, but it’s not going to blow up the world, you know? We’re still saving up for monster Windows 7 / CableCARD Media Center rig.

[Thanks, Keith D.]

Sprint HTC Hero available today to Best Buy Reward Zone members

Joining the world’s shortest list of exciting exclusives, Sprint’s HTC Hero is available for purchase to Best Buy Reward Zone members only today, two full days before the October 11 street date. You’ll need to be a Reward Zone member as of yesterday to participate, but if no Best Buy clerk has already hard-sold you a Reward Zone card during a particularly momentous purchase of yours, you’re clearly not one to be swayed by petty early purchase options anyway.

[Thanks, Ted]

Motorola Sholes to launch by holidays, along with the BlackBerry Storm 2 and Nokia Booklet 3G

Well well, it looks like the Android-powered Motorola Sholes will be out on Verizon by the holidays. That’s at least the impression we’re getting from a bunch of leaked Verizon retailer documents posted up by Boy Genius Report, which also indicate the BlackBerry Storm 2, Curve 2 and LG Chocolate Touch will hit Big Red in time for eggnog, along with an unspecified netbook — we’re guessing this Gateway number. Speaking of netbooks, a similar document from Best Buy Mobile also leaked over the weekend, and it looks like the Nokia Booklet 3G will be exclusive to Best Buy and compatible with AT&T 3G. Oh, and the Pixi is coming, but you already knew that. Here’s the real mystery, though: “There are multiple Android launches across multiple carriers, along with some new technology that doesn’t exist today.” That’s certainly open for interpretation, so we leave it to you — is Best Buy Mobile about to start selling teleporters, or what?

BlackBerry Storm 2 dummies coming to Best Buy around October 25?

We’ve long suspected that the Storm 2 would be bowing in the next couple months, within earshot of the original Storm’s one-year anniversary — and new evidence suggests that even if we can’t get an actual device in October, we’ll at least be able to make clicking sounds with our mouths as we amble around a non-functional display unit (you laugh, but it’s our idea of a good Saturday night). Boy Genius Report has been slipped a Best Buy inventory screen — a familiar sight in the phone scooping world — that reports an in-stock date for Storm 2 dummies of October 25. Those dummy units can end up arriving before or after the actual phones, and considering that we’ve seen other evidence pointing to an October launch, this could be the real deal. Tao envy might be a problem by the time this hits, but we’re sure there’ll be a few folks willing to give RIM a mulligan on its touchscreen dealings.

Sprint temporarily loses its mind, wants $250 for Samsung Instinct HD

And you thought T-Mobile and Sprint were sniffing the good stuff when they demanded $350 for the HTC Touch Pro2. Shortly after Instinct HD boxes began showing up at select Sprint stores, the flagging carrier has finally come forward with an official ship date (9/27) and price. Try as we may, we still can’t figure out why exactly “HD” is tacked on the end of this thing; the 480 x 320 display is decidedly average, it can’t play back high-def content on the device itself, and the “HD” video output is a feature that approximately 3.8 Earthlings will ever use (on a phone like this, anyway). Compounding the problem is the remarkable lack of detail in the specifications — Sprint simply swears that its 5 megapixel camera and video record mode are HD, but it fails to provide any elaboration whatsoever. Other specs include WiFi, EV-DO Rev A support, Opera Mobile 9.7, an ambient light sensor, haptic feedback and an accelerometer, but even those can’t help justify the $249.99 (after a $100 mail-in rebate and a two-year agreement) asking price. Hey Sprint — we thought you guys were actually looking to gain subscribers. Right?

Best Buy bringing value priced all-in-one 32-inch LCD & Blu-ray HDTV to stores “soon”

It’s not that surprising to learn Best Buy will be among those delivering a 1080p LCD with Blu-ray disc player packed in under its Insignia store brand, as we’ve been expecting rebadged units from overseas to hit the value market for some time. Marked “coming soon” at $599, it’s easily a few hundred less than a comparable model from Sharp, but buyers will have to live without some of the newer line items like 120Hz motion processing and a contrast ratio higher than 20,000:1. Though we don’t expect a lot in terms of load times, audio support or other features (no specs on the Blu-ray player noted) we’re sure a bedroom or dorm room somewhere will find a spot for the NS-LBD32X. Your move, Wal-mart.

[Thanks, Zach]

iRex DR800SG e-reader brings global 3G downloads — Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, and Verizon partnerships

Get ready to add another big time e-reader partnership to the list: iRex is set to announce later today a deal that will bring its latest DR800SG E-Ink slab to Best Buy with unlimited Verizon 3G data on board. The $399 e-reader with 8.1-inch touchscreen arrives as rumored with the ability to wirelessly download digital books from Barnes & Noble’s e-bookstore in addition to over 1,100 newspapers from Newspapers Direct — it’ll also handle any books downloadable in the ePub format. The 3G goodness comes via a Gobi radio from Qualcomm — right, that means HSDPA data too, allowing owners to download data while traveling abroad. Take that Kindle. The DR800SG is expected to arrive in US Best Buy stores next month. We’ll be going hands-on with it later today where we’ll have plenty of pics and the full suite of specs.

Update: iRex has dropped a picture onto its home page. Is that stylus to scale?

[Thanks, Tom]

Wii price drop confirmed: $199 starting this weekend

The rumors were true, and Nintendo‘s knight in shining armor is finally about to see its first-ever price drop. For nearly three years now, the console has sold briskly at $249.99, but beginning on September 27th at Best Buy (and everywhere else, naturally), the happy-go-lucky machine will be offered for just $199.99. Interestingly, it appears that suits at BB expect Nintendo to make an official announcement on the drop this Friday, yet retail stores won’t begin selling at the discounted rate until Sunday. Something tells us that won’t go over well, but we guess we’ve but a few days left ’til we find out exactly how the Big N plans to play this.

Instinct HD gear starts turning up at Best Buy

A funny thing happens when a major new handset’s released on a big carrier: matching accessories come along for the ride. Cases, chargers, armbands, screen protectors, you name it — anything to get you to double your spend before you walk out of the door with your multi-hundred-dollar phone. Of course, those accessories frequently aren’t perfectly synced with the phone itself — they ship a few days beforehand or after the fact, so stuff like this is bound to happen. In this particular case, the upcoming Instinct HD is getting some silicone protection ahead of time courtesy of Best Buy, which should go well with those invisibleSHIELDs you picked up a few weeks back. Meanwhile, the phone itself is expected just a handful of days from now, so at least it’s not totally insane to start stocking up on accessories now.

[Thanks, Matt G.]
