Firefox 25 beta for Android adds guest browsing and mixed content blocking

Firefox 25 beta for Android adds guest browsing and mixed content blocking

Now that polished versions of Firefox 24 are out the door, Mozilla has released the beta version of Firefox 25 — and it’s quite a hefty upgrade for Android users. The new mobile build adds guest browsing, which lets friends borrow your device without seeing your bookmarks and history. As soon as a guest signs out, your data comes back. Beta testers also get a mixed content blocker, support for add-ons with page actions and an option to set pictures as contact photos or wallpapers. If you like the idea of sharing Android gadgets with others, you can grab Firefox 25 through Google Play.

Twitter 5.0 beta for Android brings all-new design, in-line pictures and videos

Twitter 50 beta for Android now available with new design, inline pictures and videos

Only less than two weeks have gone by since Twitter debuted its app experiment on Android, but the little blue bird isn’t letting any time go to waste. Available now to those willing to deal with some rough edges, the Twitter 5.0 beta for Android features a completely new look, the ability to view in-line images / videos and a redesigned bar for menu items (notifications, messages, etc.). Looks-wise, it’s certainly slightly different than the current version. But does it perform better? We’ll let you, the beta testers, be the judge of that.

Oyster for iPhone offers all-you-can-read e-books for $10 per month

Oyster beta for iPhone offers allyoucanread books for $10 per month

All-you-can-eat subscriptions work well for digital magazines, music and videos; why shouldn’t they work for e-books? Oyster certainly thinks they should, as it just launched a flat-rate book service for iPhone users. Members pay $10 per month for unfettered access to about 100,000 books from HarperCollins, Hougton Mifflin Harcourt and smaller publishers. The unlimited-use model also facilitates a Goodreads-like social component that shows what friends are reading at any given moment. Bookworms can request an invitation today. Oyster hasn’t said if or when the service will go without invitations, but it hopes to release an iPad app in the near future.

Chrome OS beta adds touchscreen support for selections, drag and drop (video)

Chrome OS beta adds touch based text selection, drag and drop video

We don’t know when Google plans to release another device like its Chromebook Pixel, but Chrome OS support for touchscreens is continuing to improve. A new update in the beta channel brings support for both touch enabled text selection and touch enabled drag and drop on touch based devices. Right now the Pixel is the only Chrome OS laptop that supports it, but who knows what could be around the corner. Google “Happiness Evangelist” François Beaufort noted the new feature in Chrome OS’ dev channel a couple of weeks ago and recorded a demonstration video, which you can check out after the break. Otherwise, Chrome OS users living on the not-quite-bleeding-edge can also expect tweaks like an audio source selector in the tray menu, ability to share folders and files from the Files app and an improved UI for the release channel switcher.

Dark Souls 2 PS3 Beta Starts On October 12 In North America, Europe

Namco announced just a few weeks ago they’ll be launching a beta for its upcoming title, Dark Souls 2, on the PlayStation 3 this October to probably prepare those who plan on purchasing the game in March 2014 to die an obscene number of times. It looks like Namco has just revealed when exactly North American, Australian and European Dark Souls fans will be able to partake in the beta, which will start on October 12. (more…)

Target’s Ticket video on-demand service launching soon

DNP Target's Ticket video ondemand service enters limited beta

If you can’t get enough digital video storefronts, there’s one more on the way — Target’s Ticket service. The video on-demand service has been in closed beta for awhile now, and, according to TechCrunch, employees have been told that it will be launching to the public soon. Prices vary by program, but TV episodes cost around $2.99, or as much as $34.99 per season. Movies sell for about $15, give or take a few bucks, and rentals are $3.99 and $4.99, which closely matches the prices of Google Play, Amazon and iTunes. The use model is familiar too, granting users 30 days to activate a rental and 48 hours to watch after pressing play the first time.

The service is only available for the company’s employees and REDcard holders at the moment, but Target hopes to open access to more customers soon. Apps for Android, iOS, smart TVs and game consoles are in testing too, so you should be able to watch virtually anywhere. The retail giant is offering a few flicks for purchase ahead of home video too, so if you’re impatient, yet somehow missed Star Trek: Into Darkness in the theater, now is the time to buddy up to a redshirt.

Facebook’s Windows Phone beta updated to work on WP7 too

There was a time when Windows Phone 7 users could only look on as WP8-using peers Like status updates on their newer and shinier Facebook app. Not anymore. An update to the Beta version is now ready for download, bringing to the table a user interface similar to the WP8 version that meshes well with the platform’s aesthetics. Those who’ve been waiting for the update forever can hit the source link below — it’s available for both platforms, so WP8-toting folks can also join the party.

Let the god games begin: 22cans’ Godus beta available on Steam Early Access September 13th (update: iOS and Android release dates)

Let the god games begin 22cans' Godus beta available on Steam Early Access September 13th

A collective effort pulled back Curiosity’s curtain early this summer, and now it’s nearly time to play god. On September 13th, 22cans and Peter Molyneux will make the beta release of Godus, the studio’s latest “experiment” in god gaming, available via Steam Early Access for PC and Mac. The early release will cost eager overlords $19.99 and allow them to “sculpt every inch of a beautiful world,” and, of course, destroy those worlds in multiplayer battles with other virtual gods. The Kickstarter-backed nod to Molyneux’s Populous reached its funding goal in December of last year with the promise of PC, Mac and mobile compatibility and continued his focus on the video game as social experiment. Final release details are still under wraps but you can see an updated trailer after the break.

And for more Molyneux, check out our interview from E3 2013.

Update: We had a chance to catch up with Molyneux following his keynote at PAX and, among other things, he revealed release dates for iOS and Android versions of Godus: October 31st (Halloween) and November 14th (Day of the Colombian Woman), respectively.%Gallery-slideshow77099%

BlackBerry Beta Zone app released for early adopters on BB10

BlackBerry Beta Zone app released for early adopters on BB10

Well, it looks as if Twitter isn’t the only one announcing something beta-related today. BlackBerry has (quietly) released Beta Zone for BlackBerry 10, an application geared toward folks who are game to try stuff before it’s ready for prime time. The firm’s newly outed app gives members an easy-to-access hub where they can download the latest software arriving on the platform in beta. As you’d expect, Beta Zone for BB10 won’t cost a dime to download, though you will need to have an account before being able to access any of those rough-hewn apps.

Twitter debuts new Android beta tester program for interested bug catchers

    Twitter

Given the apparent backlash over Twitter’s decision to add blue lines to its conversation view, we can’t help but wonder if things could be different had the company implemented an open beta test program before pushing it out to the masses. Whether or not that particular situation was the impetus, it looks like the company is following in the footsteps of Facebook and Snapchat and is launching an official Android beta — known simply as the Twitter for Android Experiment — for any interested souls. After agreeing to sign up for a Google Group, the beta actually replaces your current Twitter app, and you’re alerted each time a new build is available. As any good beta program should, there are plenty of opportunities for you to offer feedback on bugs; we’re not sure if you can report blue lines as a “bug,” but it’s still great to know that our voices can finally be heard before new features roll out to everyone.
