Dawnguard PS3 may not see release as problems persist

PS3 owners have been waiting, some more patiently than others, for their version of Dawnguard to arrive. Skyrim’s first DLC has been available on PC for a while now and Xbox 360 for even longer, but Bethesda delayed the PS3 version earlier this month because it wasn’t satisfied with the expansion’s performance. Unfortunately, it looks like those problems with Dawnguard on PS3 aren’t going away, and in a new statement, Bethesda seems to hint that the PS3 might miss out on a release entirely as a result.

Bethesda doesn’t say flat out in the statement that Dawnguard PS3 has been canceled, but it sure sounds like the studio is struggling in a big way. The studio also points out that even if it manages to get Dawnguard working properly, it will still probably go through this with future content releases such as Hearthfire, which heads to Xbox 360 next week. Have a look at Bethesda’s statement in full:

Earlier in the month, we provided an update on Dawnguard’s status for PS3.

It’s been a few weeks, and we wanted to make sure everyone knows where we’re at with Dawnguard. Skyrim is a massive and dynamic game that requires a lot of resources, and things get much more complex when you’re talking about sizable content like Dawnguard. We have tried a number of things, but none of them solve the issue enough to make Dawnguard good for everyone. The PS3 is a powerful system, and we’re working hard to deliver the content you guys want. Dawnguard is obviously not the only DLC we’ve been working on either, so the issues of adding content get even more complicated. This is not a problem we’re positive we can solve, but we are working together with Sony to try to bring you this content.

We wish we had a more definitive answer right now. We understand the frustration when the same content is not available on all platforms. When we have an update, we will certainly let you know. We deeply appreciate all the time and support you have given us, and we’ll keep doing our best to return that.

So, it appears that the fate of Dawnguard on PS3 is currently up in the air. There is some reason to hope though – when asked on Twitter if the expansion was playable in its current state on PS3, Bethesda VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines responded by saying “Yes, it’s just doesn’t perform well in all scenarios. Some folks would be fine, some would not.” He followed up by pointing out that “every save game is different.” That’s been a big problem for Bethesda on PS3, so it isn’t a surprise that the studio is going through it again with Dawnguard.

Perhaps Bethesda will still get all of the kinks worked out? That’s what a lot of people are hoping for, but the studio has been trying to fix the PS3 version of Dawnguard for a number of weeks now, so things are starting to look a little bleak. Stay tuned to SlashGear for more information, as we’ll have it for you once Bethesda gives more details on the situation.

Dawnguard PS3 wasn’t delayed because of Hearthfire, Bethesda assures

Yesterday, Bethesda announced Hearthfire, the latest DLC for Skyrim. It looks to be a charming little DLC pack, but there’s just one problem: Xbox 360 owners will be getting Hearthfire next week, but PS3 owners are still without Dawnguard, Skyrim‘s first DLC. This understandably has some PS3 players wondering if Bethesda delayed Dawnguard on PS3 so it could finish up work on Hearthfire and get it out the door quickly.

According to Bethesda’s VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines, that isn’t the case. When asked on Twitter if the delay of Dawnguard had something to do with the production of Hearthfire, Hines replied with “No, they are separate things.” When another fan expressed their disappointment in the fact that Xbox 360 players were getting their second DLC offering while PS3 owners have yet to receive their first, Hines said “We are working on multiple projects, even beyond those two things. The entire team doesn’t work on one thing at a time.”

So there you have it – multiple teams at Bethesda are working on both Dawnguard for PS3 and Hearthfire for Xbox 360. When the PC version of Dawnguard showed up a few weeks back, many were surprised to see that the PS3 version didn’t launch alongside it. At the time, Bethesda said that it wasn’t satisfied with the performance of the PS3 version, and wouldn’t be releasing it as expected. We’re still waiting for that PS3 release date, unfortunately, and Hines even said today that he didn’t have any new information to give.

Let’s take a step away from this Dawnguard debacle for a moment though and examine Hines’ words more closely. While he said that both Hearthfire and Dawnguard PS3 are in development at the moment, he also said that there are other projects in the works at Bethesda. We know that Bethesda isn’t developing the upcoming Elder Scrolls MMO, so Hines’ comments lead us to believe that Bethesda is also working on Fallout 4. DLC woes aside, that’s pretty exciting, wouldn’t you say? Keep it here at SlashGear, as we’ll update you once Bethesda spills more details on the missing PS3 version of Dawnguard.

Skyrim: Hearthfire DLC lets you build your dream home

Bethesda has announced new DLC for the incredibly popular Skyrim, but this DLC probably isn’t what you were thinking it would be. Dubbed Hearthfire, this latest DLC pack focuses less on the adventuring aspects of the game and encourages players to not only build their own home, but start a family and settle down. We saw features like this in the Skyrim Game Jam video Todd Howard showed during his keynote at DICE 2012, but few were thinking that home building and adoption would end up being the focus of actual DLC.

In Hearthfire, players gain the ability to purchase a plot of land and then use raw materials to begin building their dream home. Judging from the trailer below, there seems to be a number of options for home building, ranging from kitchens and bedrooms to enchanter’s towers and greenhouses. Interior workbenches can be used to fill these rooms with craftable items, and once you’ve finished your house, you can move your spouse in and begin adopting kids.

Bethesda says that you’ll also need to defend your home from monsters, which suggests that there may be some tower defense elements to be found in Hearthfire. Players have the option of hiring a steward to purchase building materials and furnish their homes for them. Stewards can also hook you up with some transportation options, and even bring in a bard to stay in your home and sing songs about how awesome you are.

Hearthfire will be launching for Xbox 360 on September 4 and will cost 400 MSP. We would typically assume that it’s coming to PC and PS3 a month later, but that didn’t happen with Dawnguard, which PS3 players still haven’t received yet. Are you excited to play the role of homeowner, or does Hearthfire leave something to be desired?

Hearthfire trademark filed, possible name for next Skyrim DLC?

While Skyrim: Dawngard has yet to make its way onto the PlayStation 3, due to it being not good enough, it seems that those who are enjoying the DLC might have another DLC to look forward to in the future. In a trademark filed by Bethesda’s parent company, Zenimax, the name Hearthfire has been revealed. Given that the name Hearthfire is used to refer to the 9th month of the in-game calendar, the name should not come as a surprise and to a certain extent it is rather appropriate. Of course details of the Hearthfire DLC is pretty zero at this point, assuming it is even a DLC to begin with. However if and when it does launch, thanks to Bethesda’s deal with Microsoft, Xbox 360 owners can expect to enjoy it as an exclusive before it makes its way onto other platforms. In any case we certainly hope that Bethesda is able to sort out the issue Dawngard is having with the PlayStation 3 platform as we’re sure that players would rather play Dawngard than have to wait for the next DLC, which may or may not have issues with the PlayStation 3 as well. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more info, but until then what do you guys think Hearthfire could feature?

Fallout 4 could be taking place in Boston

The Fallout franchise is no doubt a popular one and there are many gamers out there who are probably looking forward to getting their hands on Fallout 4. While details of the game remain scarce at this point, a recent post on Reddit, it seems that Fallout 4 could be taking place in Boston as Bethesda is reportedly doing quite a bit of research in the area. This was revealed by someone who may or may not be working for MIT and according to the post: (more…)

QuakeCon blasts terrifying Doom 3 BFG: The Lost Mission trailer

With the release of Doom 3 BFG Edition coming up in just a couple of months, Bethesda and id Software have taken some time at this year’s QuakeCon (which kicked off yesterday) to hype the game. In a new trailer released today, we get a glimpse at some of Doom 3 BFG‘s new levels. There are eight new levels in all, and collectively they’re called “The Lost Mission,” serving as something of a second expansion for Doom 3.

As with most Doom-related media, this trailer can get pretty terrifying at times. We’re promised that Doom 3 BFG Edition will include more horror effects than the original did, so the hope is that this new edition is a bit more horrifying than the game we got in 2004. In The Lost Mission, players return to Mars as the last surviving member of Union Aerospace Corporation’s Bravo Team. Naturally, that isn’t a setup for a flowery story, and it isn’t long after arriving that we discover the minions of Hell are there in force.

It appears that this battle won’t only be fought on Mars, as the trailer gives glimpses of what looks an awful lot like Hell. With updated graphics for the current generation, Doom 3 BFG Edition is definitely a game to pay attention to. It also comes packed with copies of the original Doom and Doom II, so if you’ve never played a Doom game before (is that even possible?) Doom 3 BFG sounds like it’ll be a good place to start. Check out the new trailer below.

Doom 3 BFG Edition is coming to Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on October 16, and afterward we imagine id Software will ramp up work on Doom 4. At least, that’s the hope. We’ve known about Doom 4 since 2008, so it can’t be much too much longer until it’s finally released. Still, the team at id is taking Valve’s famous “when it’s done” approach to Doom 4‘s development, so we could be waiting for some time yet.

Dawnguard now available on PC, PS3 players still waiting

Well, that was quick. Earlier this week Bethesda’s Pete Hines promised that more information about the missing PC and PS3 releases of Dawnguard, Skyrim‘s first DLC, would be coming soon. When he said that, we didn’t think he meant it would be releasing soon, but apparently he did. Yes, Dawnguard is available on PC right this very instant, but be ready to pony up that cash, because it comes with a price tag of $19.99.

Unfortunately, PS3 players still have a bit of a wait ahead of them, as Bethesda says that the PS3 version still isn’t up to the company’s standards. There wasn’t any kind of time frame given for its release, and Bethesda apologized to players for not being able to launch the PS3 version alongside the PC version. Have a look at the full statement below:

We are not satisfied yet with Dawnguard’s performance on the PS3. We would like for everyone to have a chance to play Dawnguard, but we aren’t going to release it for PS3 knowing that some people’s experience in Skyrim will be worse. We do everything we can to have our content available to all; from our free updates, to user mods, to paid DLC. We’re as disappointed as our fans when that isn’t the case, but we’ll continue to push for that reality.

Those players have been waiting quite some time for Dawnguard to arrive. Thanks to an exclusivity deal Microsoft struck with Bethesda, Dawnguard has been available on Xbox 360 since June 26. With most fans figuring that the exclusivity period was only 30 days, we were all surprised when July 26 showed up without the release of Dawnguard on PC and PS3 to accompany it. Outrage followed, as those eager fans took to Twitter and bombarded Pete Hines with angry tweets and endless questions about the ETA of the no-show DLC.

Now those questions have been answered, at least partially. To be completely honest, it doesn’t surprise us one bit to hear that Bethesda is having problems with the PS3 version of Dawnguard, considering the PS3 release of Skyrim was filled with some rather nasty bugs. Here’s hoping that the wait for Dawnguard isn’t too much longer for PS3 players, and that when it finally does arrive, it comes free of game-breaking issues.

Dawnguard PC and PS3 information coming soon promises Bethesda

Last week, Bethesda VP of marketing Pete Hines sparked outrage among Skyrim fans when he pointed out that the studio hasn’t announced the game’s first DLC, Dawnguard, for any platforms other than Xbox 360. Now, Hines is promising that more information on the PC and PS3 versions of Dawnguard is coming soon, telling one perturbed Twitter follower over the weekend to “Just sit tight. We’ll have info soon.” Just how soon? A few hours ago, Hines tweeted that Bethesda should have that info later this week.

So, it doesn’t look like it’ll be too long before anxious PC and PS3 players finally have a release date for Dawnguard. Of course, there’s also the possibility that Bethesda will announce that the PC and PS3 versions of Dawnguard have been canceled entirely, so watch out for that. Many were expecting news of its multiplatform release date last week, when the 30-day exclusivity deal with Microsoft was lifted, but such news never showed up. When fans found out that Dawnguard had never technically been announced for PC and PS3, they treated Hines to a barrage of angry tweets. Now that we have the promise of additional information coming sometime in the near future, Hines might finally get to take a break from dealing with upset Skyrim players.

All of this fuss over the PC and PS3 versions of Dawnguard makes us wonder if the outrage is worth it. Skyrim was met with critical praise upon release last year, but with Dawnguard it’s a different story. Skyrim‘s first DLC only managed to garner middling reviews, but to be fair, it seems that a lot of critics had a problem with its steep price more than anything else. Still, it would be a bit unfair for Bethesda to deliver DLC to only one platform and leave the other two in the dust, so we suppose that the angry tweets are at least somewhat justifiable in this case.

Bethesda has said in the past that it’s planning to release multiple pieces of expansion pack-like DLC for Skyrim, but just how many the studio is planning remains unclear. We’re now 8 months out from Skyrim‘s release date, so it seems unlikely that we’ll be getting more than one more piece of DLC for ol’ Skyrim. Bethesda may surprise us though, so keep an ear to SlashGear – we’ll be sure to let you know about this additional Dawnguard information once Bethesda shares it!

Skyrim 1.7 available on Steam now

Skyrim 1.7After spending a week in beta, it looks like the latest patch for Skyrim is now available for all players on Steam. According to an announcement on the official Bethesda blog, the Skyrim 1.7 update is out of beta and available to all Steam users. All you have to do is launch Skyrim on Steam and the update will automatically be downloaded and installed. The 1.7 update features general memory and stability optimizations, fixed crash related to new water shaders, fixed rare crash related to dragon landings, and several other gameplay bugs.

Does the release of patch 1.7 finally mean that Dawnguard is coming soon to the PC and PS3? Fingers crossed. The Skyrim 1.7 patch will also be made available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 when the console manufacturers approve it – after Bethesda submits the updates this week.

Bethesda Skyrim 1.7 update detailed

Bethesda has revealed the details of its next major update to the game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which will be making its way to the PS3 and Xbox 360 but of course is already available on the PC through Valve’s digital distribution Steam platform. The update is mainly a functional one, fixing various bugs and optimizing performance, as opposed to one filled with new features.

Among the updates are what Bethesda calls “general memory and stability optimizations.” More specifically, it fixes the following: crashes related to new water shaders, a rare crash event related to dragon landings, and problems with the loading screens on Xbox 360 that occurred after players purchased an add-on. Other Xbox 360-specific tweaks include Kinect patches for international languages as well as improved English recognition.

In addition, Bethesda said, “Using vampiric grip and swimming no longer prevents swimming animation from playing afterwards.” This update is now in queue for the PS3 and Xbox 360. There is a queue of game patches, and the console manufacturer needs to verify the file before it pushes it to system owners. Now it’s just a matter of playing the waiting game.
