Bill Gates Has $100,000 For Anyone Who Can Invent a High-Tech, Next-Gen Condom

Condoms are a life-saving piece of tech, and for being little more than uninflated latex balloons, they do their job pretty well if you wear them. That’s the part that Bill Gates is working on. No, he’s not going around as a one-man condom-police army, but he is offering $100,000 to anyone who can make a condom less of a bummer to wear. More »

Bill Gates Not Happy With Microsoft’s Mobile Phone Strategy

Bill Gates Not Happy With Microsoft’s Mobile Phone StrategyMicrosoft chairman and former CEO, Bill Gates in his interview with CBS This Morning has been critical of the company’s mobile phone strategy calling it a clear mistake. Bill Gates was also asked if he was happy with the performance of Steve Ballmer, who he supported and said “Well, he and I are two of the most self-critical people — you can imagine. And here were a lot of amazing things that Steve’s leadership got done with the company in the last year. Windows 8 is key to the future, the Surface computer. Bing, people are seeing as a better search product, Xbox. But is — is it enough?” he said. “No, he and I are not satisfied that in terms of, you know, breakthrough things, that we’re doing everything possible.” (more…)

Bill Gates discusses Microsoft and their mobile sector

In an interview with CBS, Bill Gates talks to Charlie Rose about his life, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and more interestingly Microsoft. He says that the way that Microsoft went about the mobile industry didn’t allow them to get the leadership they needed. He says that they should have entered the market earlier in order to get the lead on cell phones and that “it’s clearly a mistake”.

Bill Gates discusses Microsoft and its mobile devices

Bill Gates says he and CEO Steve Ballmer are “2 of the most self-critical people”. He says that “There were a lot of amazing things that Steve’s leadership got done with the company in the last year. Windows 8 is a key to the future, the Surface computer, Bing – people are seeing as a better search product, Xbox“. Gates says that due to the self-critical nature of both him and Ballmer, they feel like they could better.

Bill Gates also discusses sleep and that he needs at least 7 hours of sleep, or else his “IQ begins to drop”. He wishes that he could be like other people who can thrive off only 4 hours of sleep. He is a night person and he “gets very excited about something that’s going wrong or right”. He would sometimes stay up until 2:00 A.M., which would prove to be difficult if he had an appointment early in the morning.

Alongside the talks of Microsoft, Bill Gates says that he wants to introduce a new high school course that brings together Science and History. He is also working on innovations in cheap and clean energy. While they weren’t able to get the lead on the mobile market, it seems that Microsoft is doing well in catching-up in the industry. Their Windows 8 mobile devices are starting to get traction in the industry, and hopefully with the release of Windows Blue, they’ll be seen as a major competitor.

Bill Gates shows off his 80-inch Perceptive Pixel display

Bill Gates conducted a Reddit AmA today (Ask me Anything) to talk about developments with his charity, as well as answer question on his past as Microsoft CEO. Gates provided a ton of insight on his Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the progress its making towards providing vaccines for various illnesses. However, when asked what devices he uses, he decided to snap a quick photo of his Perceptive Pixel 80-inch touchscreen, for which he actually used for his AmA.

Of course, Microsoft bought Perceptive Pixel over the summer last year, so it makes sense that Gates is technically using a Microsoft Product, considering how loyal he is with the company. The former CEO is also using a new Surface Pro tablet, which he received “a week ago,” meaning that he got his personal unit before anyone else.

Gates also noted that these big-screen Perceptive Pixels “will come down in price over time and be pervasive,” according to his own predictions. Of course, we’d love to see that happen, and hopefully we’ll see these things in more homes as the years pass, but for now, it looks like Gates will be stealing all of the big touchscreen glory.

Other than that, Gates answered a ton of questions, and while most of them were about his philanthropy work, he did discuss what he thought the future would hold as far as technology was concerned. Gates says that “robots, pervasive screens, and speech interaction” are some of the emerging technologies he thinks will create a lot of buzz within the next few years.

Bill Gates: Surface is “unbelievably great”

bill gates surfaceWith the Windows 8 launch in full swing, there is a lot of communication coming from Microsoft, but a Bill Gates interview is arguably much more interesting than a TV commercial. Of course, it won’t come as a surprise that Bill Gates supports the Microsoft Surface tablet, but it’s probably clear that it has to be more than a bit special for him since he was supported the “tablet” idea for so long.

Bill gates was still around when Microsoft’s CTO Ray Ozzie coined the “three-screen and a cloud” (TV, PC, Mobile — in 2009) which sets the goal of having a consistent experience across multiple devices. A few years later, this vision is about to have its best implementation yet with the arrival of Windows 8, Windows 8 RT and Windows Phone 8. It’s not hard to imagine that he is genuinely excited about this.

“You can’t appreciate it, without seeing it. Go to a store” says Bill Gates. Now that Microsoft stores are popping all over the country, that may ultimately be the easiest thing to do. for the details, stay tuned for our own review of the Microsoft Surface as it should come out within days. So far, what do you think of the Surface, and what would you like to see in a review? Watch the video in the full post.  (more…)

Bill Gates discusses future of Microsoft with Surface and Windows 8

Former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates sat down and talked for the first time about Microsoft’s upcoming launch of its Surface tablet and Windows 8. Gates talks about the future of Windows with touch and tablet experiences, which are new for the company, but he also mentioned that the shift towards tablets is a big step for Microsoft.

Gates sat down with Microsoft’s own Steve Clayton, and while the former CEO hasn’t been in charge of Microsoft for several years now, he’s still well aware of what’s going on with company and had a lot to say about Microsoft’s upcoming products. Gates spent most of the five-minute interview talking up and praising Windows 8 and the new Surface tablet, but he had some insights as to what the future holds for Microsoft.

Gates said that users simply “want to consume their mail, reading, [and] video anywhere, and they want it to be awfully simple.” Touch capabilities make that happen simply and easily, but Gates also mentioned that “you want to incorporate touch without giving up the mouse and keyboard capability that is just so natural in most settings.” Because of this, Gates says that Microsoft “is blending all the different forms of input” to make devices easier to use for everyone.

Gates continued by saying that users will be “amazed” at the amount of effort that Microsoft is putting into its upcoming products, and that it’s sort of a turning point for the company as far as innovation and the importance of its new product line. Gates simply says that “this is the big time” for Microsoft.

Bill Gates already has a Surface and you don't video

Being the founder of Microsoft certainly has its advantages, as well as its downsides. Case in point: the video interview Microsoft released this morning, starring none other than Bill Gates himself talking about the world of Windows 8. On the positive side, Gates reveals he’s already got his own soon-to-be-released Microsoft Surface RT — he calls it “an unbelievably great product,” unsurprisingly — with a black keyboard. On the less than positive side, despite being out of the CEO seat at the company, Gates still has to do interviews like the one found after the break. You’d think he could just get Ballmer to put on his old Crazy Eddie’s impersonation! We’ve dropped that notorious video after the break as well, for comparison sake.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 5, 2012

We’ve arrived at another Friday evening, which means that the weekend lies ahead. Today, as many of you probably already know, was the one-year anniversary of the passing of Steve Jobs. Apple paid tribute to Jobs in a new video released today, and it was announced that three modified MacBook Pros will be auctioned off in memory of Jobs. On the lighter side of things, Lenovo is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the ThinkPad with a look back through time, and Samsung’s profits for Q3 2013 managed to break company records (not an easy thing to do, considering how popular Samsung is).

The LG Nexus G has been tipped for a reveal later this month, and it looks like problems with component yields might mean that we’re headed for iPad Mini shortages (assuming the rumored tablet actually exists, of course). The Kindle Paperwhite has officially been jailbroken, and Rovio was spotted teasing a new Star WarsAngry Birds tie-in earlier today, leaving us to wonder what’s in the pipeline. Sprint might be looking to rain on T-Mobile’s MetroPCS parade, and Anonymous is at it again, this time bringing down government sites in Sweden in the name of The Pirate Bay and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

Wii U pre-orders are hard to find these days, but provided you’ve got the cash to burn, you can pick one up on eBay. iPhone cases were popping up left and right today, like this Loop Mummy case for the iPhone 4/4S and these Moshi cases for the iPhone 5. Xi3 has gone to Kickstarter to fund its new X3A and X7A modular computers, and one analyst is saying that HP’s stock should be worth negative $2. Ubisoft gave us a brand new ZombiU development diary, and we heard that increased iPhone 5 quality demands led to a strike at a Foxconn factory in China today.

New algorithms may eventually lead to cell phones that charge twice as fast, while NASA explained why Curiosity is collecting dirt from the surface of Mars. Motorola has managed to fight off Microsoft in a patent dispute over in Germany, while astronomers say they’ve discovered a new star circling a black hole at the center of our galaxy. Pokemon Black and White 2 launch in the US this Sunday (are you ready to be the best?) and we found out today that New Zealand authorities may have been spying on Kim Dotcom much earlier than they’ve admitted.

Finally tonight, we have quite a few original articles to share with you. Don Reisinger asks if Bill Gates will be remembered in the same way as Steve Jobs when he’s gone, Chris Burns explains why the iPad Mini will be free when it launches and what the iPad Mini needs to fix when it comes to Apple tablets, and Chris Davies has a review of the Synology DS213air NAS. That does it for tonight’s evening wrap-up – we hope you have a fun weekend!
