Bing Maps Preview For Windows 8.1 Released

Bing Maps Preview For Windows 8.1 Released

To preview the changes that Microsoft has planned for its mapping service, it released the Bing Maps Preview app for Windows 8.1 today. The company says that this app is a first step in “introducing a new way to explore the world.” The app has been built from the ground up, according to Microsoft, and that they have focused on detail, scale and clarity. To ensure that users are provided with the highest quality imagery possible, Microsoft is showcasing a focused list of more than 70 cities around the globe just to let users know what’s to come from Bing Maps in the future.

Since the app was built for Windows 8.1, it takes advantage of features like Snapview and Windows notification, it also has Live Tile support. Users can explore places of interest, routes and landmarks over the cityscape, they will also have the option to switch to Streetside viewing mode in selected areas. “Bubble view” will provide a preview of the Streetside view while maintaining a broad perspective of the entire map, so basically as the user rotates the map, their view turns with it. In-app search is also present, allowing users to search for a restaurant or a venue and immediately get a route overlay. Favorite routes can also be saved in the Bings Maps Preview app and if certain times are specified, the app will automatically display traffic notification along those routes at the provided time even if the app isn’t active. The app is available for download right now in Windows Store.

Bing Maps Has Revealed Russia's Secret Stealth Fighter Jet

Bing Maps is apparently really great at one thing: revealing top secret military information. After capturing a top secret military base, Bing has now caught a stealth Russian airplane that’s been shrouded in mystery. The Bing Maps image above shows Russia’s MIG Project 1.44, Russia’s first attempt at building a stealth fighter jet. A jet that Russia might have sent to China to kick start China’s stealth program. A jet that was supposed to be Russia’s answer for the F-22 Raptor.

Bing Maps Gets New World Imagery

Bing Maps Gets New World ImageryThe folks over at Microsoft have just upgraded Bing Maps, this time around throwing a whole lot more images than hopefully you will have time to go through, and there is no word on just how large the update file’s size is this time around, although it will comprise of a whopping 13,799,276 square kilometers of high resolution satellite shots. Those who are wondering what lurks beneath the ocean too, will be able to enjoy a far more intimate view of the ocean floor.

The all new “straight down” photos will provide the base map with a resolution of 15 meters per pixel, and when Microsoft decided to throw in bathymetric imagery that changes the ocean’s hue depending on its depth, you have got quite the looker here for curious eyes and minds. The Bing Maps update will not have that many clouds too, so that you can see more of the earth instead of waking up your craving for cotton candy. Bing Maps is proud to cover the whole of the US, in addition to 90% of Western Europe, thanks to images shot from aircraft. [Press Release]

Bing Maps Receive 121TB Of New Satellite Imagery

Microsoft has recently announced that they will be updating the Bing Maps database with a slew of new information – where some might even say that it is an overload. Just how much new data are we talking about here? How about a whopping 121 terabytes (TB) of new satellite and Global Ortho imagery, which would be a welcome addition to an already robust amount of images of the Earth. This new satellite imagery is said to cover 15 million square kilometers of the globe, and will boast of new data in many places, although these will predominantly target South America, Africa, Asia and eastern Europe.

Other than the satellite imagery, the Bing team has also thrown into the mix another 800,000 square kilometers of Global Ortho imagery under the western Europe territory, delivering the total global coverage to 10.7 million sq. km, and 100% of the United States is included as part of this exercise. All Global Ortho imagery were shot by a plane with a camera that is mounted underneath, hence it delivers a far higher clarity as opposed to imagery from a satellite, We are talking about 30cm of ground area per pixel, now how about that?

AccuWeather launches for Windows 8, lets you know what it's like beyond the Metro

So you’re finally getting that Surface tablet (or a Windows 8 PC of choice) and have decided that a basic weather app just won’t do it justice. AccuWeather agrees with you — after months of supporting the Windows 8 preview editions, it’s formally launching a weather app that takes advantage of Microsoft’s completed Metro Windows 8 interface in all its widescreen glory. The title both provides near-obsessive detail about the climate as well as the requisite live tile for an at-a-glance check. You also won’t have to resort to the web to find out if it’s raining in your neighborhood: a Bing Maps radar overlay shows if it’s safe to leave the umbrella at home. The app is free to download, which makes it entirely too easy to check the weather through Windows instead of the window.

Bing Venue Maps gets global-sized update, makes Euros' shopping trips easier

In case you thought all those 165TB of satellite shots would slow down the Bing Maps updates — think again. And while this one might not be as loaded as the aforementioned goods, the latest refresh to Redmond’s mapping service is likely to make at least a few shopaholic Europeans very happy. To make things short, Microsoft — in partnership with Nokia — is taking Bing Venue Maps over to the Vieux Continent, boosting the total number of mall-friendly maps to over 2,700, and making it more than 30 countries in which the offering’s now live. For those unfamiliar with Venue Maps, the service allows you to find stores, bathrooms and even ATMs located within a good amount of shopping malls across North America, Europe and Asia. Even better, you can see if your favorite spot is one of them at the source link below, where you’ll find the full list of venues supported.
