Where were you when the ISS launched its first module in November of 1998? Some of us watched, others were in school, still other weren’t even alive yet. Either way, it’s hard to believe that today is the International Space Station—the largest cooperative science project ever—is celebrating its 15h birthday today.

Brands, brands everywhere! If you’re tired of seeing brands and logos plastered on everything these days, then why not go generic? Chris did and he did it in the most unusual way possible when he threw a generic birthday party for his wife.
Staying true to his 100%-generic theme, Chris put up some boring decorations and balloons and set up some generic games, most of which were done up without color. Now, generic isn’t synonymous with colorless, but I guess Chris just wanted to make everything as basic as possible.
Chris explains: “My wife wanted a run-of-the-mill birthday party. I asked her, ‘So just a generic party?’ This is the result.”
Even the gift is wrapped in generic paper, although I’m pretty sure Chris didn’t go with a completely generic gift on the inside because I’m not sure his wife would be too happy about that.

Look at the people with smiling faces in the above illustration. It’s not too difficult to figure out what’s going on: it’s their birthday, and they’re all happy because they’re about to get presents. What if they knew that you had totally spaced on the fact that they were celebrating the anniversary of their birth? Fortunately, there are plenty of services that will remind you of friends’ and family members’ DOBs, and Amazon is now joining their ranks with a Facebook-integrated program called Birthday Gift. The idea is simple: you can order an Amazon gift card for a Facebook friend ahead of time, and the company will make sure it gets delivered on their momentous day. What’s more, you can also send invites to mutual friends to see if they want to pitch in a few bucks. I’m huge fan of Superman. I grew up watching Superman cartoons Saturday mornings with my brother – and as a child of the 80s, I love all of the Superman movies from that period. For me, Christopher Reeve will always be Superman to me. The most recent Superman film wasn’t good, but I have high hopes for Man of Steel set to hit theaters this summer. And in case you didn’t know it, Superman is currently celebrating his 75th birthday.

I never read comic books growing up, so I had no idea that the first time Superman appeared was back in the 1930s. The original Superman turned up in Action Comics issue number one in June of 1938. That puts it exactly 75 years back from the June release of Man of Steel.
Also I find it interesting that when Superman debuted in 1938, he was the only superhero around. The first time Superman hit the big screen came in a serial that was shown in movie theaters starting in 1948. The early big-screen Superman was played by Kirk Alyn. The iconic TV series from the 50s featured George Reeves a Superman. Superman will be played by Henry Cavill in Man of Steel when the film launches on June 14.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Pentium processor, which was introduced on March 22, 1993. If you’re old enough to recall, the chip ran circles around its 486DX2 predecessor, and thanks to a heavy dose of marketing from Intel, the brand quickly became synonymous with the PC. For you trivia types, the original Pentium P5 was available in 60MHz and 66MHz variants, and was manufactured with an 800-nanometer fabrication process, which is quite the contrast to the 22nm chips on the market today. Rather than burden your mind with specs, though, we’d rather celebrate — and we’re sure that you would, too. Did the word free in the headline grab your attention, or was it the cake? Either way, Amazon’s Appstore is throwing a party to mark its second birthday, and there’s a goody bag of software for anyone who attends. It’s been a good month for Android users, as Google’s Play store had its own shindig recently, and like last year, Amazon’s been treating Appstore patrons to discounts all week. For its official anniversary today, though, a tray-full of apps can be downloaded gratis. Admittedly, the selection isn’t fantastic, but you should find one or two things worth at least the time it takes to click ’em — Chu Chu Rocket, may we suggest (long live Dreamcast!). It’s already been a year since the Android Market was renamed Google Play, and the folks in Mountain View are offering up a boatload of free party favors throughout the week to celebrate. Technically, the store’s birthday is March 6th (yes, it’s a Pisces), but Page and Co. have already begun serving up free music downloads, in-game content, TV shows, books, discounts and more. Though the selections vary by country, folks in the US can currently pick up a free tune from LCD Soundsystem, $20 in free gift cards through Gyft and a gratis download of Breaking Bad’s pilot episode among other things. The Raspberry Pi project is one year old today, having launched on February 29, 2012 (they’re going to have a rager of a party in 2016.) I sat down with the Pi-parents themselves, Eben and Liz Upton, as well as Pi-supporter Limor Fried AKA Lady Ada of Adafruit Industries to talk about the special occasion.
The current incarnation of the Pi, the Model B, just sold its millionth unit and the Uptons are hard at work at new versions of the beloved mini-computer. The popularity has stunned supporters in the UK and the US alike and we talked about education, the future of the Pi, the mystery of the ultra-rare Model A owned by Lady Ada, the only unit of its kind in America.
“I remember when Raspberry Pis were rare enough that I had a spreadsheet that told me where they were in the world,” said Eben. “Now we’re a million Pis in.”
The Pi is computing of the best sort – it’s a little intimidating at first and then an amazing amount of fun. If the Upton’s vision comes to fruition, expect to see an entire generation of computer-educated kids rolling through the school systems around the world, ready to take on the future.
