Bitcasa Offers new Pricing Tiers

All good things must eventually come to an end, or so it seems according to the natural law of life. For those who have been mulling over just how long will Bitcasa’s infinite cloud storage offer be made available to the masses for an annual fee of $99, it is time to stop thinking. Bitcasa has already revamped their pricing tiers, and so those who want to take advantage of the unlimited service will now need to fork out $99 monthly instead – and if you think that you would be hogging a whole lot of data throughout the entire year, then it might be better to settle for the $999 annual fee instead, which would more or less give you two months of free storage for the price of 10 months.

Bitcasa has come up with this new pricing plan partly because we suspect that the “promotional or honeymoon period” is over, and because most of their subscribers do not fill up their quota of space. In fact, Bitcasa reported that 98% of their customers consume under five terabytes of data, while another 92 percent “do not store anywhere close to a terabyte.” Apart from that, a survey (no idea on how large the sample size was) of its customers pointed out that they want features more than extra space. Has this revamped pricing tiers affected you in any way? [Press Release]

Bitcasa’s infinite cloud storage balloons to $999 a year

Bitcasa's infinite cloud storage balloons to $999 a year

If you thought Bitcasa’s infinite cloud storage was too sweet of a deal to exist on this mortal plane for $99 a year, that’s because it was — or at least partly because the bulk of subscribers filled up far less of their digital lockers than expected. According to the outfit, 98 percent of its customers use less than five terabytes of data, and 92 percent “do not store anywhere close to a terabyte.” In addition, the firm says a survey of its customers revealed they valued more features over additional space. As result, the unlimited service will now cost $999 a year, or $99 per month, and the company will focus on making the platform more useful, starting with a freshly-released API. Free accounts have been tweaked to start at 5GB (as opposed to 10GB), and the $99 per year (or $10 a month) tier now nets 1TB of space. For those with even more bits to squirrel away, 5TB can be had by contributing $499 a year (or $49 each month) to Bitcasa’s coffers.

Existing subscribers will get to keep their current plan’s rates and storage, but won’t get access to new offerings — such as the future Linux client — unless they switch to the new pricing scheme. Tencent’s free 10TB of online storage might sound even more tempting now, but it’s worth taking this instance as an example of what could happen to your cloud paradise.

Bitcasa Partners With Samsung To Offer Unlimited Cloud Storage On All Of Its Windows 8 Devices

Screen Shot 2013-08-06 at 7.47.35 AM

Today Bitcasa, Disrupt Battlefield finalist, has announced a partnership with Samsung to offer Bitcasa’s infinite storage service to all Windows 8 devices sold by Samsung, save for smartphones. This includes tablets, desktops and laptops.

The company has had this partnership in the works for almost a year, according to founder Tony Gauda, but wanted to wait to share the news until consumers could actually go purchases these devices with Bitcasa pre-installed.

For those of you who haven’t heard yet, Bitcasa is a software service that opens up your hardware to have infinite storage in the cloud, with no lag to watch a stored movie or play a song. It works like this: Bitcasa only saves data that is unique to you, while saving only one version of all the redundant data in its system. You might think that the unique data outweighs the redundant, but it’s actually on the contrary.

As it stands now, Bitcasa charges users $10/month or $99/year for its infinite cloud storage, but users who purchase a pre-loaded Samsung device will get two free months of infinite storage space, along with 20GB for free over the lifetime of the device.

But what does this mean for Bitcasa’s revenue?

The company already has a huge influx of users interested in hopping on the service, as evidenced by the total of 30 petabytes of data stored on the site. But partnerships with major brands offers a more B2B-focused business model. This allows Bitcasa to focus on perfecting the service as opposed to bringing in new users, as the big hardware companies can now do that for them.

According to Gauda, Bitcasa has one of the highest free to paid conversion rates in the industry (without getting into too much detail), “but so many people don’t know we exist,” he added. In other words, the distribution here is critical.

Though Gauda didn’t specify the exact terms of the Samsung deal, he did explain that talks have already begun with other major brands to distribute the Bitcasa service. The idea is to have manufacturers spend less on their own hard drives and instead pay a small fee for every device sold with Bitcasa pre-loaded.

Bitcasa leaves beta, offers discount on Infinite Drive to celebrate

Bitcasa leaves beta behind, offers discount on unlimited storage to celebrate

Bitcasa made some serious waves when it hit the scene in December, offering bottomless cloud storage for $10 per-month or $99 for a full year. The service is now leaving beta, with the promised Mac and iOS apps in tow. And, just as icing on the cake, a Linux client is also on the way (and already available in alpha form). While going gold isn’t going to change a lot about Bitcasa in the short term, at least the company knows how to celebrate right — with steep discounts! Sign up for the service during the month of February and you’ll get a full year of Infinite Drive for $60 $69. You can sign up at the source and peruse the PR after the break. We’re already busy backing up our My Bloody Valentine bootlegs.

Update: As some of you have noticed, the price being advertised on the Bitcasa site is $69 for the year, not $59 as the press release states. We’ve updated the post to reflect the advertised cost and asked for a clarification.
