BlackBerry R10 budget QWERTY and Q10 top-tier smartphones close at hand

This week the BlackBerry 10 is extending its hand in both unofficial and official manners, with the BlackBerry R10 leaking as a QWERTY budget smartphone running BlackBerry 10 and the Q10 hitting pre-orders. With the BlackBerry Q10, we’ve already had a couple of looks at the device and have been no less impressed with it than we were with the Z10 – take that how you will. With the BlackBerry R10 it would appear that the company is indeed going back on its assurance that they’d never create another budget phone again – here’s BlackBerry 10 for everyone!

Below you’ll see an image presented by BlackBerryOS who say they’re all about the idea of it being a new R-Series BlackBerry device called the BB10 Curve. This smartphone is said to come with less RAM, less processor power, and not quite as much excellence on the whole. But you’ll still be working with BlackBerry 10, so perhaps it’s not all bad – and the price will certainly be affordable!

Have a peek at our BlackBerry Q10 hands-on right this minute to understand the power. Today’s news includes the first official pre-orders from Carphone Warehouse in the UK – that includes T-Mobile, Three, EE, O2, and TalkMobile.

Alleged Blackberry 10 R-Series “Curve” Photo Surfaces

Alleged Blackberry 10 R Series Curve Photo SurfacesEarlier today we reported that a sketch of what is supposedly the Blackberry 10 R-series was leaked, but unfortunately the sketch wasn’t much to go on. Now the good news is that if a budget Blackberry 10 device sounds like your cup of tea, new photos have emerged (via BBOS), this time alleging to be the photos of the Blackberry 10 R-series “Curve”. We’re not sure if the “Curve” name will stick, but considering that Blackberry uses the Curve lineup for its more affordable phones, with the Bold being its more high-end products, we wouldn’t be surprised if they continued the trend. In terms of design there’s not much to shout about, although the keys on the R-series do look a bit nicer to type on compared to the Blackberry 7 Curve smartphones, but then again it’s all a matter of preference. What do you guys think? Any takers?

Entry Level BlackBerry 10 R Series Device Allegedly Leaked

Entry Level BlackBerry 10 R Series Device Allegedly Leaked

It has been only a couple of months since BlackBerry announced their new BB10 platform and the new Z10 and Q10 smartphones. Both of these devices are high-end devices, while the latter has not even been made available to the public yet. BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins has previously confirmed that they have as much as four BlackBerry 10 devices planned for this year. Sketch of an alleged R Series entry level BlackBerry 10 device leaked today, which is reportedly quite similar to the BlackBerry Q10.

The R Series BB10 device is said to have a full QWERTY keyboard, SD card slot for external memory expansion, 8GB of internal storage and a 1,800 mAh battery. It is expected to be launced in early fall or late summer 2013. The price tag is supposedly going to be between $300 – $400 without a contract. The source claims that their tipster has signed an NDA due to which he can’t release actual images of this device, hence the provision of the sketch you see above. Can this possibly be a new BlackBerry 10 based model for the Curve line of smartphones?

Blackberry 7 devices will head to emerging markets

Blackberry’s Z10 has finally made its way to the United States, one of Blackberry’s most important markets. It’s still a bit too soon to evaluate just how well the device is doing, however, judging from the customer reviews, the device is doing well. However, where exactly does that leave Blackberry’s OS 7 devices? It looks like the company has decided to bring the devices to several emerging markets.

Blackberry 7 devices heading to emerging markets

Blackberry CEO Thorsten Heins states that the company will be launching its Blackberry 7 devices in emerging markets, more specifically to the countries who have always been loyal to Blackbery’s products. While Apple and Samsung are the major players in the bigger markets, Blackberry is still one of the top players in the emerging markets, like Nigeria, where its devices top those of other companies.

After bringing Blackberry 7 devices to those markets, Heins says that the company will also be launching lower-end Blackberry 10 devices as well. Heins states, “We’re not excluding those markets from Blackberry 10 because of us wanting to sell Blackberry 7.” Blackberry plans on bringing a wide-variety of low to mid-ranged devices “that covers the entry-level market”. He states that the company needs to appeal to all the markets in order to turn a profit.

Along with releasing these lower-end devices, Heins states that the company is also working on developing a variety of new services and features that they can monetize. The new features will tie in mainly with Blackberry Messenger. One of the new features, BBM Money, will allow users to transfer money to each other through the app. Blackberry plans on developing its portfolio even further this year, which we sort of have an idea of thanks to the leaked Blackberry Roadmap. The Blackberry Z10 is a phenomenal device, and once more people get to see that, Blackberry may be able to pull off a successful comeback. Check out our Blackberry Z10 review to see if its the device for you.

Alleged Blackberry 10 2013 Roadmap Leaked

Alleged Blackberry 10 2013 Roadmap LeakedSo we know that Blackberry is set to release several new devices later this year, two of which we know of: the Blackberry Z10, which has already been released, and the Blackberry Q10 which will be released in the near future. However the remaining devices are something of a mystery, what could Blackberry have planned? Well according to Twitter account, BB10Leaks, they have posted an image (picture above) that is alleged the roadmap of Blackberry’s devices for the year 2013. As we can see, Q1 saw the release of the Z10, with the Q10 pegged for a Q2 launch. Those at least seem to be pretty spot on. However it’s the remaining devices that has gotten us curious.

We can see in Q3 that Blackberry has a device called the L planned which based on its appearance, looks like a tablet. Q4 will see the launch of a device called the U10 which might seem like Blackberry has plans to enter the phablet scene, and in Q2 2014, there is the R10 which looks like the Q10, albeit bigger with an edge-to-edge display. Of course this roadmap’s authenticity cannot be proven at this point in time, so for all we know it could be fan-made so it’s best you take this with a grain of salt for now. However if it is true, the U10 is of particular interest – would any of you guys be interested in a Blackberry 10 phablet?

Verizon BlackBerry Z10 hands-on and unboxing

It’s finally time to take a peek at BlackBerry 10‘s first big smartphone presentation here in the United States with the Verizon iteration of the BlackBerry Z10. This device is an all-touch smartphone – that feature a given on most other mobile operating systems, but a relatively new concept for BlackBerry – and works with Verizon’s rather speedy 4G LTE network. What we’re looking at here on day 1 are just the basics: what’s different from the international edition?

topbuttons

In our original BlackBerry Z10 Review, Chris Davies spoke about both the hardware and the software in great detail. Lucky for you, not a whole lot has changed since that device was ready for action nearly 2 months ago. Here with the Verizon version we’ve only got the addition of big red’s 4G LTE connectivity compatibility and a couple of Verizon account apps.

backer

With My Verizon Mobile and Backup Plus Contacts you’ll now have the ability to work with your Verizon bill and monitor the data you’ve used during the month. You’ll be able to back up your contact list with Verizon as often as you’d like. And that’s it.

apps

This version of the BlackBerry Z10 uses the same 2 megapixel camera on the front, the same 8 megapixel camera on the back with LED flash, and the same processor under the hood. Inside you’ll find the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, the same that exists in every version of the Z10 that exists thus far – this same processor is used in such phones as the Samsung Galaxy S III (USA edition), the Motorola DROID RAZR HD, and the HTC One X (USA edition). You’ll also find the first, most updated, and only version of BlackBerry 10 mobile OS on the market.

backoff

Up front you’ve got a lovely 4.2-inch 1280 x 768 pixel LCD display, complete with the third-densest pixel arrangement on the market. While the HTC One wins at the moment with 468 Pixels Per Inch, and the HTC DROID DNA is in second (with the Xperia Z and GALAXY S 4) with 441 PPI, the BlackBerry Z10 stands alone as holding the only display on the market with 355 PPI. Of course at that level of density, it’s nearly impossible to tell the difference between the lot with the naked eye, but it’s always fun to compare!

The BlackBerry Z10 stacks up against the HTC One and iPhone 5 – the battle is on!

BlackBerry 10 Gets Facebook And Twitter Update

BlackBerry 10 Gets Facebook And Twitter UpdateThese days, it is no longer enough that your company happens to churn out the most powerful and advanced hardware on the market, if it does not have the relevant software to go along with it. Having said that, the recently introduced BlackBerry 10 platform has been deemed by certain quarters to be BlackBerry’s last chance saloon at making it in the mobile operating system environment, and getting the support of major app developers would be a vital cog in keeping it alive and competitive. Hence, it is good to hear that the BlackBerry 10 will soon receive updated Facebook and Twitter applications to help it keep up with the times.

You will be able to find new features in Facebook for BlackBerry 10, where among them include the ability to locate nearby friends, to be able to save photos from Facebook to the BlackBerry device itself, and even gain from improved photo tagging. Twitter for BlackBerry 10 will also deliver the similar Connect Tab which can be found on other platforms, and users are now able to check out additional content which has been embedded within Tweets.

CEO changes mind on inexpensive BlackBerry 10 handsets

If you were worried that you’d never get your hands on a BlackBerry 10 smartphone because the first touchscreen device was too expensive – bucker up! Today BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins has made an almost offhand comment about the future of the inexpensive BlackBerry 10 handset – a device he’d previously all but dismissed as a possibility. Today during an earnings call that had rather mixed news for the company, a “midrange BlackBerry 10″ smart device was confirmed.

blackberry_z10_review_sg_11-580x418

If you’re all about the least-expensive of this notoriously business-oriented smartphone lineup, it looks like you’ll be waiting until mid-year. According to Heins, “various markets” will be getting a so-called “midrange” BlackBerry 10 device, while up until then the world will be working with the two top-tier devices we’ve seen thus far. Heins added that the company was looking forward to [this midrange release] because [BlackBerry] knowss that there’s a big demand even in the midrange.”

“We know there’s a big demand [for BlackBerry 10] even in the midrange.”

This announcement has this lesser BlackBerry device pinned for right around September – that’s not halfway through the year, you might say, but Heins wasn’t talking about the normal year, he referred instead to the fiscal year. BlackBerry’s fiscal year just ended with this particular earnings call, the next starting presently.

This midrange machine’s existence will quite likely hinge on the success of the BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Q10, both of which are hitting the market either immediately or rather soon. Have a peek at the rest of the earnings call results in our BlackBerry earnings wrap-up and hit the timeline below for more BlackBerry 10 hands-on magic!

20% of all Blackberry 10 Apps are Android ports

Blackberry had just announced last week that the Blackberry App World had finally reached its 100,000 app milestone. The Blackberry App World had grown rapidly in size thanks to Blackberry’s intense campaign to get developers to create apps for its platform. One of those campaigns involved a port-a-thon that allowed developers to port their apps from Android straight to Blackberry.

20 percent of Blackberry 10 apps are Android ports

The event was a huge success. How successful? Over 20,000 Android apps were successfully ported to the Blackberry 10 App World. That’s 20% of all the apps available in the Blackberry ecosystem. Martyn Mallick, Vice President for Global Alliances and Business Development for Blackberry, stated that porting Android apps to Blackberry 10 was a great way to increase Blackberry’s app data base. He said, “Our users deserve to have great content. If that is the fastest way we can get some of that content, that’s great.”

While it does have many big name companies bringing apps to its platform, there are still two companies that are holding out. Both Instagram and Netflix stated that they had no intentions of bringing their apps to Blackberry 10. Netflix is speculated to be holding out because it doesn’t see enough incentive in developing for the platform. Mallick stated, “There are some partners where their priorities are elsewhere, not even necessarily in mobile.”

However, despite those two declining to help Blackberry, Mallick is still optimistic about the Blackberry App World. He stated that many developers only intended to port their apps to Blackberry and that was it. But eventually, developers started developing native apps for Blackberry 10 devices. A lot of them are adding Blackberry 10-specific features, like Amazon with its Kindle port.

Mallick also assures developers that they don’t have to worry about fragmentation, because the first set of Blackberry 10 devices will have one of two screen sizes. Developers are still a bit wary about the Blackberry Z10′s slow sales, however, Mallick, like many others, stated that the Blackberry Z10 just needs some more time to get its foot off the ground. If you’ve been considering buying a Blackberry Z10, check out our hands-on review for the device here.

Android Ports On BlackBerry 10 Platform Cut Down To 20%

Android Ports On BlackBerry 10 Platform Cut Down To 20%

When BlackBerry officially launched its BlackBerry 10 platform along with its BlackBerry Z10 & Q10, the company’s VP of global alliances and business development Martyn Mallick stated 40% of all BlackBerry 10 applications were ports of Android applications. After nearly two months of BlackBerry 10 being available, Mallick is now saying that number has been cut in half to 20%.

Mallick spoke with AllThingsD recently on why exactly BlackBerry decided to choose to port Android applications rather than have its developers build BlackBerry 10 optimized apps from the start. “We give [developers] a very nice on-ramp to get onto the platform.” Mallick said. “Our users deserve to have great content. If [porting Android apps] is the fastest way we can get some of that content, that’s great.” (more…)
