RIM posts Q2 earnings: $2.87 billion in revenue, softer $235 million loss

Research in Motion headquarters

RIM may have given us hope that its transition to BlackBerry 10 has turned a corner, but that doesn’t mean the dark clouds have entirely broken just yet. The company’s second fiscal quarter saw it generate $2.9 billion in revenue, a slight gain over last quarter, while it posted a net loss of $235 million — again better than expected, but not the best news it could deliver. Waterloo’s main challenge was holding on to its smartphone base. While RIM did expand the total BlackBerry user base to 80 million, its phone shipments dropped from 7.8 million to 7.4 million and were braced by shipments of just 130,000 PlayBooks, or half as many tablets as were delivered in the spring.

The sunshine is mostly found in the total picture. RIM says it’s still on track to deliver the first BlackBerry 10 phones in early 2013; while the smartphone maker is bracing for an operating loss in its ongoing third quarter, the higher revenue and reduced losses suggest to CEO Thorsten Heins that RIM is getting its fiscal house in order before BlackBerry 10 (hopefully) renews interest. Full details of the company’s financial performance are available after the break.

BBM for Blackberry 10 demonstrated in video

Considering that BBM is one of the defining features of the Blackberry platform, we’re sure that many users looking forward to RIM’s upcoming Blackberry 10 platform are wondering what the BBM experience would be like. Will it offer new experiences and features, or will it still remain the same as before, which by the way is in no way a bad thing. Well the good news is that the folks at N4BB have managed to get their hands on BBM for Blackberry 10 and released a demo video of some of its features. They noted that this is not the final version, as the final version of BBM for Blackberry 10 will feature video integration along with switchable themes for better power consumption (better battery life is always a plus!). Either way it looks pretty good based on what we’ve seen and you can check it out in the video above. In the meantime Blackberry loyalists out there, we’d love to hear what you guys think of BBM for Blackberry 10 – has it exceeded your expectations or do you think it’s still lacking something?

Thorsten Heins believes Blackberry 10 has a shot at being the number three platform on the market

At the moment it wouldn’t be wrong to say that both iOS and Android are currently dominating the smartphone platform market. As to which platform is better is certainly a matter of preference and is most certainly a debate for another time. So what about RIM? Will RIM’s upcoming Blackberry 10 platform be good enough to compete with the likes of iOS and Android, and possibly Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Phone 8? While beating iOS and Android certainly might be the ultimate goal for RIM, the company currently has Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 in their sights and this was confirmed by RIM’s CEO, Thorsten Heins, who believed that Blackberry 10 will have the opportunity to beat Windows Phone 8.

“We have a clear shot at being the number three platform on the market. We’re not just another open platform on the market, we are BlackBerry,” according to Heins who spoke to the press. Granted it’s hardly a “shoot for the stars and hit the moon” quote, but given that RIM’s Blackberry platform is struggling in the smartphone market, we guess third place is better than being out of the race completely! In any case based on what we’ve seen so far in screenshots, Blackberry 10 is certainly looking pretty good and we can’t wait to see how it actually handles when it launches in Q1 of 2013. So, any Blackberry loyalists pumped up by Heins’ statement?

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 26, 2012

We’ve made it through hump day, which means only two more work days to go before the weekend arrives again. Yesterday, we found out about a hack that was resetting Samsung Galaxy S IIIs to their factory settings. Samsung said that the security hole had since been fixed, but today we heard that the remote hack isn’t limited to just Samsung devices. The iPhone 5 might be heading to China soon, and we heard that Apple’s new Lightning connector isn’t identical on both sides. Google maps is rumored to be hitting iOS 6 by the end of the year, which goes hand-in-hand with new report that claims Apple ditched Google Maps because it doesn’t offer turn-by-turn navigation.

Facebook has been axing fake accounts left and right today, while we learned that the Galaxy S III will soon be launching at MetroPCS. Apple has been suspiciously ordering large quantities of carbon fiber, and RIM experienced a stock boost today after its BlackBerry 10 presentation yesterday. Xbox Music pricing details “leaked” out today, and Amazon has launched Vine.com, a new shopping service for those concerned about the environment.

Nintendo gave us a list of 23 titles that will launch alongside the Wii U on November 18, while Boost Mobile announced the LG Venice (which looks awfully similar to the LG Optimus L7). Facebook has implemented Dropbox integration for sharing among groups, and a new Nook video is taking a few shots at both Netflix and Amazon. O2 and HTC announced today that they will be selling an incoming, yet-unannounced smartphone without a charger, seemingly to cut down on the amount of spare chargers floating around out there.

Humble Indie Bundle 6 has a bunch of new games on offer for those who pay more than the average, and Activision delivered new details on the Zombies mode in Black Ops II today. Google launched Google Play services for Android developers today, which allows them to integrate a number of Google services into their apps. Finally tonight, Chris Davies takes a closer look at the fight ahead of the Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets, Chris Burns has a new review of the HiddenRadio Wireless Speaker, and Ewdison Then has reviews of both the Monster Inspiration Headphones and the BMW X1 Crossover, so be sure to give all of those a look!

The Engadget Interview RIM's TA McCann on how BB10 is going social

In case you missed Thorsten Heins keynote yesterday, RIM’s betting on BB10 becoming the next big thing in mobile computing. Part of Thorsten’s plan to put BB10 on top involves deep integration of third party social apps like Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare into the new OS. BlackBerry has always been a productivity platform first and foremost, but with RIM touting BB10’s abilities as a social platform, we wanted to know more about the plan to make it happen. So, we sat down with T.A. McCann, RIM’s VP of BBM and Social Communities, to find out how he’s going to reach his CEO’s goal of a flowing, social OS and the challenges of getting there.

RIM shares rise after yesterday’s BlackBerry Jam

Yesterday, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins took the stage in San Jose to talk about some of the upcoming features in BlackBerry 10. Though RIM is taking its sweet time bringing BlackBerry 10 to market, Heins did have some good news to report, telling the audience that BlackBerry users have grown to 80 million, up from 78 million from previous quarter. In addition to delivering that glimmer of hope for the struggling company, Heins also showed off a handful of new features that will be present in BlackBerry 10, and that address seems to be sitting well with investors today.

RIM’s stock is trading up today, breaking the $7 mark earlier for a gain of about 7%. Of course, it fluctuated throughout the remainder of the day, resting at $7.00 even (6.06% gain) by the time the closing bell signaled the end of the regular trading day on Wall Street. That is definitely good news for RIM, which has been losing market share at a pretty steady rate ever since iOS and Android took over the smartphone scene.

RIM is counting on BlackBerry 10 to pull it out of this rut, with Heins saying yesterday that the new mobile OS has a shot at becoming a solid third behind iOS and Android. BlackBerry recently fell below 5% market share, which is a far cry from where it was at when BlackBerry mania was in full swing. In all, RIM’s stock has fallen 90% in value from its peak, which signals that some major changes need to happen before users leave the company behind entirely and it goes the way of the dinosaurs.

Make no mistake, BlackBerry 10 certainly looks like a solid OS, but the question on everyone’s mind is whether it will be a strong enough contender to bring RIM back from the brink. We’ll find out the answer to that question soon enough, but for now, we’ll just let the executives at RIM revel in today’s victories. Check out or story timeline below for more posts on RIM and BlackBerry 10.

SlashGear Morning Wrap-up: September 26, 2012

This morning we’re bubbling around in the middle of the week with a mix of Windows Phone 8, iPhone 5 incoming wave madness, and the looming BlackBerry 10 release. Of course there’s a lot of non-mobile stuff coming up as well, and we’ve gone and done a whole car review, but there’s always a bunch of phones to love up on! There’s also some chip news, apps for the devices you just bought, and no less than sixteen billion new devices in all realms as well – did I mention that I’ve been gone for a week? That’s Chris Burns, gone for a whole week – I’ll be writing an article about how it’s felt to be out of the loop, so to speak.

There’s been a delay with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera because of a sensor glitch. The Hubble Space Telescope has taken a new deepest photo ever of the universe. You’ll be working with the first beta of Cloudee Texas Instruments has decided to sideline their processor business until further notice for mobile devices – say goodbye to OMAP, strangely enough.

Have a peek at the new Sky+ 2TB HD box with on-demand TV and iPad second screen app – it’s strange and hot! EA Sports FIFA Soccer 13 launches in the USA and everyone remembers that outside the United States people actually really have a heavy love for the sport! There was a flaw in the Samsung Galaxy S III working with remote wiping but it’s been patched at this time – no worries! Google has brought their mapping abilities to a new low – or high, however you look at it – with no less than underwater Street View!

We’ve got a BMW X1 Crossover Review for you to take a look at – Chris Davies is inside! We’ve taken a hands-on look at the Barnes & Noble NOOK HD and HD+ right here at the reveal. RIM has release a collection of BlackBerry 10 development tools for your perusal – coming up quick!

RIM launches BlackBerry 10 development tools beta update

Today was a big day for RIM. The struggling company took the stage today to talk about all things BlackBerry 10, announcing a number of new features and telling us that carrier testing for the incoming OS will begin next month. For the BlackBerry faithful, today was a exciting day, but RIM didn’t stop at showcasing the new features of BlackBerry 10, launching a new update to its BlackBerry 10 development tools beta today as well.

RIM has done a lot with this update, including adding a software update for the BlackBerry 10 simulator and BlackBerry 10 Alpha. Both can now boast support for BlackBerry 10′s core apps, which include contacts, calendar, BlackBerry 10 message center, and BlackBerry 10 messenger. As an added bonus, BlackBerry 10 developers can now begin making apps with BBM integration.

To make things easy for game developers, RIM has supplied a native C/C++ plug-in for Microsoft Visual Studio, which will allow devs to quickly port their games to BlackBerry 10 devices and the BlackBerry PlayBook. RIM is also pushing an update to the Ripple Simulator this time around, which now features additional support for BlackBerry 10 device and API emulation and comes with Adobe Cordova in tow.

RIM may suffered a lot of setbacks with the rise of Android and iOS, but there’s something to be said for how seriously the company is taking its relationship with BlackBerry 10 developers. Getting consumers to choose a BlackBerry device over the competition will definitely be important when BlackBerry 10 eventually launches, but having developer support is critical as well. In that respect at least, it seems that RIM is on the right track. Check out our story timeline below for more information on RIM and BlackBerry 10!

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 25, 2012

We’ve had a rather interesting Tuesday here at SlashGear, thanks in no small part to RIM. The company held its BlackBerry Jam today, introducing us to new BlackBerry 10 features like Peek and Flow. We also learned that BlackBerry 10 will come with support for your favorite social networks, even offering a native Facebook app. Carrier testing on the new mobile OS will begin next month, and RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said that BlackBerry has a good shot at becoming number three behind Android and iOS.

We found out today that Apple’s new Lightning adapters come with an authentication chip built in, and that New York City is experiencing a sharp increase in the number of Apple thefts. Apple’s Phil Schiller said that the scuffs and scratches some users are experiencing with their iPhone 5s are normal, and a teardown of the iPhone 5′s A6 processor provided some fresh insight into what’s going on under the hood. There’s a new way for you to bypass the 3-4 week wait for an iPhone 5 to be delivered to your home, and Instagram was updated with support for iOS 6 while Google delivered its own iOS update for Google Voice.

The Samsung Galaxy Note II will be launching in the UK on October 1, and speaking of Samsung, we heard whispers that the company is planning to launch a Tizen-based Galaxy smartphone. New reports are saying that the Kindle Fire HD is in for some serious competition from the Google Nexus 7, and Microsoft’s Kinect could potentially help save lives in a new map making gadget. Intel’s CEO claims that Windows 8 is being released with a number of bugs left unfixed, and Tesla has slashed its profit forecast after its new Model S hit some bumps in production.

Google Maps apparently won’t be coming to iOS 6 until Apple offers an invitation, and the Jaguar F-TYPE suffered a very sexy leak today. Box has issued an update for its iOS app and it’s offering some free stuff to all iOS users, while some labor experts are warning that there could be more Foxconn riots in the future. Sony announced today that a number of October retail releases will be on PSN from launch day, and is even offering PS Plus subscribers a 10% discount on the purchase price of most of them. Finally tonight, Gameloft has released a new trailer for Modern Combat 4, and we have to say that we were pretty impressed.

That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up! Enjoy the rest of your night everyone!

RIM CEO says BlackBerry has a shot at being number three

A lot of fun stuff happened at RIM’s BlackBerry Jam event. They’ve been showing off their latest BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system and even debuting weird videos. After the event, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins spoke to the press to answer some questions, and he was confident that BlackBerry could be — not number one or number two — but number three in the mobile OS market.

Heins thinks that RIM has a solid chance to overtake Windows Phone 8 and grab the third spot behind iOS and Android. He clarified that BlackBerry isn’t just another mobile operating system that’s saturating the market, and that RIM can put a big dent in Windows Phone 8. Here’s what Heins had to say:

“We have a clear shot at being the number three platform on the market. We’re not just another open platform on the market, we are BlackBerry.”

He pointed out that some of the unique features of BlackBerry 10, like the BlackBerry Hub and the new multitasking UI, will help BlackBerry become a real contender against other mobile operating systems. Heins also said that the company wants to focus on better multitasking for the BlackBerry OS. He brought up iOS and its inefficient way that it jumps in and out of apps, which Heins says may not be the best method for power users.

So, why number three? Why not number two or even number one? Heins responded by saying, “You climb a mountain step by step.” He said that he wasn’t thinking about BlackBerry becoming the number one smartphone, but instead becoming number one in mobile computing, which means that RIM isn’t only focusing on making smartphones, but an “entire mobile computing platform.”

For now, let’s hear it for RIM’s new chant: “We’re number three! We’re number three! We’re number three!”
