Mysterious Blackberry 10 roadmap leaks

A new Blackberry 10 roadmap, leaked by a mysterious Twitter account, shows that Blackberry has a few interesting devices heading our way. Of course, we have to take this information with a grain of salt, but nonetheless, it does show us an interesting new future for Blackberry. In the leaked roadmap, we see that Blackberry is planning on releasing a 10-inch tablet, a phablet, and another touchscreen device with a fully QWERTY keyboard.

Blackberry 10 roadmap reveals interest new devices 1

Blackberry planned on releasing a 10-inch version of its Blackberry Playbook last year, but ended up cancelling the device due to poor sales of its 7-inch Blackberry Playbook device. Many Blackberry fanatics will be pleased to know that an even better, 10-inch tablet may be headed their way sometime in Q3/Q4 of this year. Instead of running the Playbook’s QNX operating system, it will run the more polished, Blackberry 10 OS.

Blackberry 10 roadmap reveals interest new devices

The roadmap also shows that Blackberry intends on releasing another touchscreen device between Q4 of this year and Q1 of next year. The device may be a phablet because it looks much bigger than the Z10 and the Q10 on the roadmap. It’s speculated to be the Blackberry Aristo that was rumored before, which is said to have a display that’s 5-inches or larger.

The last device looks to have both a touchscreen display as well as a full-QWERTY keyboard. It resembles the Blackberry Q10, however it looks like it will have a much bigger display. It is also speculated to be a mid-ranged Curve device that’s part of the rumored Blackberry R-Series. Thorsten Heins, Blackberry’s CEO, confirmed that there will be plans for mid-ranged Blackberry 10 devices this year.

What’s strange about this roadmap is that recently, Martyn Mallick, VP for Global Alliances and Business Development for Blackberry, stated that Blackberry devices will come in 1 of 2 screen sizes this year. He may have believed that the Blackberry phablet and the touchscreen full-QWERTY phone would be coming next year however. Whatever the case may be, these devices will be able to fully utilize the 100,000 apps in the Blackberry World, 20% of which are Android ports. Be sure to check out our review of Blackberry’s first Blackberry 10 device, the Blackberry Z10.

Verizon BlackBerry Z10 hands-on and unboxing

It’s finally time to take a peek at BlackBerry 10‘s first big smartphone presentation here in the United States with the Verizon iteration of the BlackBerry Z10. This device is an all-touch smartphone – that feature a given on most other mobile operating systems, but a relatively new concept for BlackBerry – and works with Verizon’s rather speedy 4G LTE network. What we’re looking at here on day 1 are just the basics: what’s different from the international edition?

In our original BlackBerry Z10 Review, Chris Davies spoke about both the hardware and the software in great detail. Lucky for you, not a whole lot has changed since that device was ready for action nearly 2 months ago. Here with the Verizon version we’ve only got the addition of big red’s 4G LTE connectivity compatibility and a couple of Verizon account apps.

backer

With My Verizon Mobile and Backup Plus Contacts you’ll now have the ability to work with your Verizon bill and monitor the data you’ve used during the month. You’ll be able to back up your contact list with Verizon as often as you’d like. And that’s it.

This version of the BlackBerry Z10 uses the same 2 megapixel camera on the front, the same 8 megapixel camera on the back with LED flash, and the same processor under the hood. Inside you’ll find the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, the same that exists in every version of the Z10 that exists thus far – this same processor is used in such phones as the Samsung Galaxy S III (USA edition), the Motorola DROID RAZR HD, and the HTC One X (USA edition). You’ll also find the first, most updated, and only version of BlackBerry 10 mobile OS on the market.

backoff

Up front you’ve got a lovely 4.2-inch 1280 x 768 pixel LCD display, complete with the third-densest pixel arrangement on the market. While the HTC One wins at the moment with 468 Pixels Per Inch, and the HTC DROID DNA is in second (with the Xperia Z and GALAXY S 4) with 441 PPI, the BlackBerry Z10 stands alone as holding the only display on the market with 355 PPI. Of course at that level of density, it’s nearly impossible to tell the difference between the lot with the naked eye, but it’s always fun to compare!

The BlackBerry Z10 stacks up against the HTC One and iPhone 5 – the battle is on!

Have a peek at our hands-on photos above and below, keep your eye tuned to our BlackBerry Z10 tag portal for more information on this device and see the timeline below for our adventures with BlackBerry 10 up to and including this week!

55% Of Blackberry Z10 Customers Come From Other Platforms, According To CEO

55% Of Blackberry Z10 Customers Come From Other Platforms, According To CEOWe’re pretty sure that many a Blackberry loyalist would have jumped at the opportunity to swap out their older Blackberry device in favor of the new Blackberry Z10. At the same time we expect that there are other users from other platforms who might have liked what they’ve seen and might have jumped shipped as well, but the question is, how many? During Blackberry’s Q4 FY2013 earnings call, Blackberry CEO Thorsten Heins revealed that not only was Blackberry 10 seeing new subscribers from older Blackberry users, but they are also seeing an influx of new users coming from other platforms, a whopping 55% to be exactly.

Heins stated that 55% of those who bought the Z10 came from other mobile platforms, such as iOS, Android or Windows Phone. If the numbers are accurate, this is certainly a pretty amazing feat for Blackberry and goes to show that the Blackberry Z10 certainly does have appeal and that many are willing to check it out. This is in line with comments made by Blackberry’s MD in India who claimed that 45% of Blackberry Z10 customers came from other platforms.

Verizon Gets BlackBerry Z10 At Last

Verizon Gets BlackBerry Z10 At LastSo, you have been waiting for quite some time to pick up the all new BlackBerry Z10 from Verizon Wireless, but have not heard a beep for the past couple of months. Well, we are glad to say that all of your waiting will not be in vain, and if you are interested in picking one of these bad boys up, you can do so from Verizon for $199.99 a pop, although that will obviously be accompanied by the regular 2 year contract. The BlackBerry Z10 will be an all-touch smartphone, where you will be able to choose from black and white colors.

Do take note that the smartphone itself had not been made available Stateside until fairly recently (March 22nd, to be exact), we will have to wait and see just how well the BlackBerry Z10 has performed when the next quarterly report is released. The BlackBerry Z10 on Verizon would mean that they have now joined the ranks of AT&T and T-Mobile when it comes to mobile carriers that offer this device, as Sprint has already mentioned that they will be giving the BlackBerry Z10 a pass his time around.

20% of all Blackberry 10 Apps are Android ports

Blackberry had just announced last week that the Blackberry App World had finally reached its 100,000 app milestone. The Blackberry App World had grown rapidly in size thanks to Blackberry’s intense campaign to get developers to create apps for its platform. One of those campaigns involved a port-a-thon that allowed developers to port their apps from Android straight to Blackberry.

20 percent of Blackberry 10 apps are Android ports

The event was a huge success. How successful? Over 20,000 Android apps were successfully ported to the Blackberry 10 App World. That’s 20% of all the apps available in the Blackberry ecosystem. Martyn Mallick, Vice President for Global Alliances and Business Development for Blackberry, stated that porting Android apps to Blackberry 10 was a great way to increase Blackberry’s app data base. He said, “Our users deserve to have great content. If that is the fastest way we can get some of that content, that’s great.”

While it does have many big name companies bringing apps to its platform, there are still two companies that are holding out. Both Instagram and Netflix stated that they had no intentions of bringing their apps to Blackberry 10. Netflix is speculated to be holding out because it doesn’t see enough incentive in developing for the platform. Mallick stated, “There are some partners where their priorities are elsewhere, not even necessarily in mobile.”

However, despite those two declining to help Blackberry, Mallick is still optimistic about the Blackberry App World. He stated that many developers only intended to port their apps to Blackberry and that was it. But eventually, developers started developing native apps for Blackberry 10 devices. A lot of them are adding Blackberry 10-specific features, like Amazon with its Kindle port.

Mallick also assures developers that they don’t have to worry about fragmentation, because the first set of Blackberry 10 devices will have one of two screen sizes. Developers are still a bit wary about the Blackberry Z10′s slow sales, however, Mallick, like many others, stated that the Blackberry Z10 just needs some more time to get its foot off the ground. If you’ve been considering buying a Blackberry Z10, check out our hands-on review for the device here.

PowerSkin announces BlackBerry Z10 case

Each new smartphone purchase tends to be accompanied by a slew of accessories purchases. After all, it makes perfect sense, you too, want to make sure that the smartphone in your possession remains nice and in pristine condition, free from scratches and being able to withstand knocks and drops, especially those tend to happen when you least expect it to. Now, cases for smartphones are dime a dozen to choose from, and most folks are spoilt for choice, too. PowerSkin is an old hand at offering protective case choices for smartphones of all shapes, sizes and makes, and this time around, they would concentrate on the BlackBerry Z10, with the new PowerSkin BlackBerry Z10 NFC-enabled battery case.

The name itself does give away just as much, where your BlackBerry Z10 will soon not only gain all round protection from the majority of drops, nicks and knocks, it will also be on the receiving end of a big boost of power, all crammed into a single piece, featherweight design. Shaun Ng, Product Manager for XPAL Power, said, “PowerSkin dominates the battery case market in the Android and BlackBerry space. We take pride in offering the widest selection of options in a market traditionally saturated with solutions only targeted toward the Apple user.”

The Z10 PowerSkin will feature a one-piece, soft silicone exterior which is not only shock-proof, but dust-proof as well, and it will just add an additional 88 grams to the entire weight of the smartphone. That should not weigh you down by too much, no? There is a built-in 1500 mAh rechargeable battery which will further be able to extend the phone’s power by up to another 60%, and you will be able to control the flow of power using a press of the on/off button. The presence of a LED light strip on the back will be able to show off just how much battery charge is left, and the slim 20mm design also boasts of PowerSkin’s patent-pending technology that allows NFC transmission to pass through the silicone case, ensuring you will be able to perform quick information sharing in a jiffy. If you are interested, the Z10 PowerSkin will retail for $79.99 a pop.

BlackBerry 10 Partners with PBS, Viacom & Univision

BlackBerry 10 Partners with PBS, Viacom & Univision

The BlackBerry Z10 was officially released last week as it was made available on AT&T and today, it has been made available for T-Mobile customers. Not only has the Z10 officially launched in the U.S., but the new BlackBerry 10 OS has also been released to the masses. The content selection for the BlackBerry 10 platform are slim pickings at this point, but BlackBerry is announcing some additional worthwhile content for its new OS.

BlackBerry is partnering with PBS, Univision and Viacom to bring a number of their popular programming, including Downton Abebey and shows from channels such as Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon to BlackBerry’s video catalog. Today’s partnership seems to be exclusive to BlackBerry 10 U.S. users as there’s currently no word on when or if it would be released across additional markets. (more…)

Blackberry Z10 Now Available From T-Mobile

Blackberry Z10 Now Available From T MobileGood news T-Mobile subscribers, if you have been eyeing the Blackberry Z10, you’re in luck because the handset is now available for purchase via T-Mobile. The Blackberry Z10 will be amongst the first few devices from T-Mobile to support 4G LTE connectivity, and it will also be under the carrier’s new mobile plans which unfortunately will no longer offer subsidies. Instead customers can now expect to pay an upfront payment and repay it over the duration of your contract. Granted it does sound a bit like a subsidy, but we guess it depends on how you look at it.

The Z10 will be priced at $531.99 off-contract, but if you’d like to try T-Mobile’s new plans, it will cost you $99.99 upfront, and you can expect $18 every month for the next 24 months. However the kicker is that according to their website, it reads, “Qualifying rate plan required.SRP $531.99. 0% APR On Approved Credit for well-qualified buyer,” suggesting that maybe not everyone will be eligible for that plan. In any case if you’d like to pick the Z10 up for yourself, head on over to T-Mobile’s website for the details.

Brightstar Was The One Who Bought The 1 Million Blackberry Z10 Units

Brightstar Was The One Who Bought The 1 Million Blackberry Z10 UnitsRemember the other day we reported that a mysterious customer had bought 1 million Blackberry Z10 units? If you’re curious as to who the mysterious benefactor is, the folks at AllThingsD have managed to discover that it is none other than Brightstar who bought up the Blackberry Z10 devices. This was confirmed by their source who claims that AllThingsD had the “Bright” part right when they speculated it was Brightpoint. For those unfamiliar, Brightstar is the company that handles Verizon’s big-box retail distribution, so by having Brightstar purchase the Blackberry Z10s, they are effectively offloading some of their risk to a third-party distributor. If that is the case, we guess this 1 million Z10 purchases can’t exactly be called a success for Blackberry, but hey it’s still money in their pockets and hopefully Brightstar will be able to unload these Z10s into the hands of customers.

T-Mobile To Offer Free Alicia Keys Tickets For First 10 Blackberry Z10 Customers

T Mobile To Offer Free Alicia Keys Tickets For First 10 Blackberry Z10 CustomersT-Mobile confirmed that the Blackberry Z10 will launch on the 26th of March, and if you were thinking of getting your hands on the device, being first in line has its benefits. According to the reports, T-Mobile is apparently giving away tickets to Alicia Keys’ concert and $25 off for the first 10 Blackberry Z10 customers. It’s pretty generous and the good thing is that if you’re not a fan of Alicia Keys, you could always sell those tickets off, ultimately reducing the amount you spent on the Blackberry Z10 in the end. If you are a fan, we guess this could be considered a win-win situation. Of course considering that this is only for the first 10 customers, we expect you’d probably need to get there really early. So, any T-Mobile subscribers out there planning to get their hands on the Blackberry Z10 tomorrow?
