Diablo III’s next big “oops”

This week it’s been revealed that Blizzard Entertainment’s own Diablo III will be coming to the PlayStation 4 without access to the Real Money Auction House still present in the desktop PC iteration. Though this might have some odd effects on those hoping to play the game with access to weapons, armor, and everything in-between with their own real-world cash, Blizzard is presenting a firm “not a chance” as they suggest that, if they could, they’d take the whole mess out of the game entirely.

If you have a travel down our Diablo III tag portal, you find a series of stories that are just as often negative and full of disappointment as they are exciting and action-packed. This release was one of the most long-awaited in the history of gaming, with 8 years separating the second installment of the series (Diablo II in 2000) and the announcement of this title.

Though Diablo III was first announced in 2008, it was only actually released to the public on May 15th, 2012. That’s one massive amount of time for a game to be in development, especially with the 5-minutes-of-fame atmosphere we’re in now. Then there’s the bits and pieces that Blizzard has had to change right from the outset. Today’s big kicker is the announcement from former Diablo 3 Game Director Jay Wilson.

“Most of the auction house’s use is with in-game virtual gold.”

Speaking with Joystiq this week about Diablo III’s real money action house, he suggested that the feature has “really hurt the game.” According to Wilson, over 50 percent of the players that play regularly use the auction house, while most of the auction house’s use is with in-game virtual gold rather than with real cash.

Because of this gold use, not necessarily the real money, motivation to collect gold and broken items (otherwise useless, able to be sold in the game to virtual vendors for gold), have become far more popular goals for users. There’s simply not as much junk everywhere anymore – Diablo II continues to be a massive mess of item drops and coins.

“I think we would turn it off if we could, [but it’s] not as easy as that.” – Wilson

Citing the near-impossible task of figuring out how much of the Diablo III user population wants the auction house to stick around or be kicked to the curb, Wilson was clear on one point: they are looking for a “solution.” A solution to what, exactly, we might never know.

Diablo 3′s Auction House Hurt The Game, According To Former Game Director Jay Wilson

Diablo 3s Auction House Hurt The Game, According To Former Game Director Jay WilsonOne of the more controversial moves Blizzard made with Diablo 3 was with the auction house feature. While it provided a legitimate way for gamers to sell items they could not use and make some gold, and real money off it, many players felt that this meant that gamers with money to spare would be able to buy uber gear without having to work very hard for it. Say what you will about the feature, but it seems that even Diablo 3’s former game director, Jay Wilson, admitted that the auction house feature (both gold and real-money) hurt the game. (more…)

Diablo 3 gameplay footage for the PS3 unveiled

Gameplay footage for the PlayStation 3 version of Diablo 3 has been released. The video shows the PC-game with a very different UI. Gameplay is smooth (for the most part), the new control system seems very user-friendly, and the new dynamic camera system seems very appealing (the fight against Belial looked very entertaining). All in all, the PlayStation 3 port seems very well done and should appeal to Diablo 3 fans.

Diablo 3 gameplay footage for the PS3 unveiled

Diablo 3 on the PlayStation 3 will feature all of the current offerings of the PC version of the game. There will be Paragon levels after you reach level 60, Monster Power settings, PvP, and more. Along with those additions, there is also one, very important selling point. The game will have 4-player split-screen co-op. So you, and 3 of your friends, will be able to join together to take on Diablo in a nostalgic, Champions of Norrath/Gauntlet Dark Legacy-like way.

Diablo 3 has seen great commercial success, selling over 12 million PC copies to date, however the game had received a lot of negative criticism shortly after its launch.  It received negative criticism for its Always-on DRM, previously difficult gameplay (like floors blanketed in desecration and plague), and lack of end-game content. Many consumers complained that it was the worst Diablo, if not the worst game, ever. The developers were able to make the game more enjoyable by adding a lot more content (like the Infernal Machine), dramatically reducing the difficulty of monsters and their affixes, and by allowing players to choose the difficulty of their gameplay via Monster Power levels.

There isn’t any specific release date for the Playstation 3 version of Diablo 3, but we do know that it will be released for the PlayStation 4 in the future as well. The developers of the game have also stated that the game isn’t necessarily a Sony-exclusive, so we could be seeing the game on other consoles like Nintendo’s Wii U and the Xbox 360/720. And many of you will be pleased to know that the console game will have an offline mode.

Blizzard unveils HearthStone: Heroes of Warcraft at PAX East

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything new from Blizzard, but today during a panel at PAX East, the game developer announced a new game called HearthStone: Heroes of Warcraft, which will be a free-to-play collectible card game set in the universe of Warcraft. While it will be a card game essentially, it’s all computerized and digital.

Not a lot of details are known yet, but we do have an idea of what the game will be like from what has already been announced so far. Blizzard says that they “wanted to do something a little different” this time around, and the game is described as “really small,” noting that it was built by a team of only 15 developers.

HearthStone focuses on 1 vs. 1 match-ups and uses Battle.net for matchmaking. The game includes 300 total cards that are based on the World of Warcraft classes, and extra packs will be available for purchase, which will be priced around $1 each, according to Blizzard. The developers showed off a complete demo during the panel, and there’s a documentary-style video available that shows off some of the gameplay, seen below.

Blizzard also released a trailer for the game, which doesn’t show gameplay as much as giving gamers an idea about the storyline and premise of the game. You can actually sign up for beta access right now, but there are no details on availability. However, the game will be available on Windows and OS X, as well as an iPad version.

Blizzard Announces Free-To-Play Card Game, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

Blizzard Entertainment has been creating quite a stir in the gaming community lately as they not only announced its Diablo III will be headed to consoles, specifically the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 at this point, and today, they’re announcing they’re going to be releasing a free-to-play game.

The game is called Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft and will be shown at a PAX East panel sometime this weekend. Hearthstone will be an online free-to-play collectible card game, similar to Magic: The Gathering, and will be made available on the PC and Mac in beta form this summer. Shortly after its initial beta release, it will be made available for the iPad. (more…)

StarCraft 2: Heart Of The Swarm Sells 1.1 Million Copies In 48 Hours

StarCraft 2: Heart Of The Swarm Sells 1.1 Million Copies In 48 HoursBlizzard’s StarCraft series of RTS games is no doubt pretty popular, especially in the competitive gaming scene where live television events have been broadcasted in countries such as South Korea where the video game is apparently taken very seriously. Like we said earlier, it is one heck of a popular game, but just how popular? Well according to the sales figures, it looks like Blizzard has managed to sell an impressive 1.1 million copies of StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm in 48 hours. To put things in perspective, Wing of Liberty managed to sell 1.5 million units in 48 hours, and while this might seem like a decline, those numbers could pick up later on.

For those unfamiliar with the StarCraft franchise, Heart of the Swarm is the successor to Wings of Liberty which was released a couple of years ago. The game, unlike the first StarCraft which saw all campaigns playable, is split up into 3 – one game for every race. Personally it feels like a way for Blizzard to make more money, but on the other hand having played through Wings of Liberty and Heart of the Swarm, it really does feel more like a complete game rather than an expensive expansion set. So, were you one of the 1.1 million that bought Heart of the Swarm? Or did you, like many professional gamers, retire after Wings of Liberty?

Blizzard To Show Off Diablo 3 For Console At PAX East

Blizzard To Show Off Diablo 3 For Console At PAX EastRemember when we said that Blizzard would be announcing their next game at PAX East which will be taking place this week? While we’re still not 100% clear as to what Blizzard has planned for the event, what we do know is that the developer has confirmed that they will be showing off Diablo 3 on the console. According to a statement released by Blizzard, “Our action-packed single-player hands-on demo will showcase several key elements that make Diablo III on the PS3 so much fun, including a reimagined interface and inventory system, direct character control, updated camera, and bosses and monsters specifically tuned for console.”

Diablo 3 for the console was announced during Sony’s PlayStation 4 event, although this could hardly be called a surprise considering the numerous rumors that have been making their rounds in the past. The game will be exclusive to the console, meaning that those playing on the PC will not be able to play with their friends on the console. In a way it makes sense since Blizzard relies on Battle.net for PC, and Sony has their PSN. Could this be the “next game” that Blizzard’s Rob Pardo mentioned on Twitter? Or could we be looking at a possible Blizzard All-Star release announcement as well?

Blizzard Claims Nobody Is Close To Figuring Out StarCraft 2: Heart Of The Swarm Yet

Blizzard Claims Nobody Is Close To Figuring Out StarCraft 2: Heart Of The Swarm YetBlizzard’s super popular RTS game StarCraft 2 had its expansion, Heart of the Swarm, launched not too long ago. We’re sure that many players were excited about its release and have since gone and completed the campaign and are now furiously engaged in online multiplayer battle against each other. While we’re sure that there are hardcore gamers and theorycrafters out there who are busy crunching the numbers and figuring out the best strategy, according to Blizzard, it seems that players have yet to figure out the game just yet.

According to Blizzard’s David Kim on the RTS forums, “The super aggressive play is turning out to be really fun to watch. Nobody is close to figuring the game out yet. A few players are really changing up their play and having completely different results than what’s expected by the majority.” Kim went on to acknowledge that there are some initial balance concerns that may need to be addressed, but stated that there are players out there who are finding creative ways around them. “We’ll continue watching all the pro and community concerns, but keep in mind we’d really like the game to settle before we step in and make a move.”

Blizzard To Announce New Game At PAX East Next Week

Blizzard To Announce New Game At PAX East Next WeekApart from the recently launched StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, many are probably wondering what new games Blizzard might have up their sleeves, and it looks like come PAX East which is taking place next week, we might have an answer. This was revealed by Blizzard’s Chief Creative Officer, Rob Pardo, who posted on Twitter, “PAX East next week and I’m still not ready with the announcement for our next game. Work work work.” Before you guys jump to any conclusions, Pardo has clarified that this reveal will not be “Titan”, a game that the developer is working on.

If it isn’t Titan, then what could it be? Many are speculating that it could be when Blizzard All-Stars is finally announced that it is ready for playing. Given that the game was unveiled at BlizzCon in 2010, and that earlier this year Blizzard confirmed that the game was still being worked on, we guess it’s about time that it is ready for prime time. Either way we won’t speculate too much, but we’ll definitely keep our eyes open so if you’d like to see what Blizzard has in store, check back with us next week during PAX East for the details!
