Blizzard’s Rob Pardo believes that next-gen consoles could be the last

Word has it that come 2013, we could be seeing next-gen consoles from both Sony and Microsoft. Of course given that these are rumors, taking them with a grain of salt for now would be the best course of action. However speaking of next-gen consoles, could the next-gen consoles be the last of their kind? Well it seems that with the focus of gaming starting to shift towards mobile devices like our smartphones and tablets, especially given that some of the higher-end smartphones and tablets have the ability to handle superb graphics, it wouldn’t exactly be a stretch of the imagination, would it?

That’s apparently what Blizzard’s Rob Pardo thinks as well which he affirms in an interview with Games Industry. When asked about his thoughts on gaming in the next five or ten years, Pardo was quoted as saying, “Are people going to go out and pay $300 plus for a gaming system that plugs into their TV the way the last generation did? I personally think the answer is yes for one more generation.  […] I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the last traditional console generation and it evolves into something new after that.” However he also stated that consoles at the moment still have an advantage in their ability to deliver content that cannot be experienced yet on mobile devices. This is not the first time that the next-gen consoles have been suggested to be the last of their kind, but what do you guys think?

Blizzard’s project “Titan” in the middle of development with over 100 team members

It has become common knowledge that Blizzard has a new MMO in the works which has been given the codename “Titan”. It is expected to be a next-gen MMO, although what exactly that means remains to be seen. Now for those who have been earnestly keeping track of Titan’s process, you might be interested to learn that in an interview with Curse, Blizzard’s VP of game design, Rob Pardo, revealed that Titan is “definitely in the middle of development at this point” and features a team of over 100 people.

For those wondering, Titan is Blizzard’s upcoming MMO and thanks to a leaked road map spotted in 2011, it has been revealed that Titan was on track for a release in 2013. No word on when exactly in 2013 it will be made available, but according to Pardo, it’s a big project and has a long way to go, but hopefully Blizzard will make their 2013 projected date. However given Blizzard’s past and the tendency to delay games to bring up the quality, just like Pardo stated, don’t get your hopes up just yet. In any case we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled, so check back with us at a later date where hopefully more details about project Titan will be available! In the meantime you can check out the full interview in the video above.

Blizzard announces free character transfers for some World of Warcraft servers

Despite Blizzard’s World of Warcraft subscriptions slowly facing a decline, it’s still a pretty popular game and while players across all servers might have fallen a bit, there are still servers whose population is still brimming and with the launch of the Mists of Pandaria expansion that could have lured both new and old players into the fold, we expect that some servers might have found themselves at maximum capacity. This has caused players to wait in sometimes very lengthy queues in order to get into their server, and while it might not be an issue for new players who can easily switch to a new server, it can be frustrating for some who have had their characters in there for years.

Well the good news is that Blizzard has announced that they will be providing free character transfers for servers who are facing especially long queues. Blizzard has listed 8 servers that are eligible for the transfers and they range from Oceanic servers to those in North America. So if you’re on the server that is affected and you’re looking to move your character or entire guild onto a less populated server, you can do so. To see if your server is eligible or for more details, head on over to the World of Warcraft blog.

Diablo 3 PvP features uncovered in datamined game client

One of the features that Blizzard announced for Diablo 3 back then was PvP. Granted Diablo 2 had PvP, but for Diablo 3, Blizzard would be introducing a style of PvP that would be akin to World of Warcraft’s PvP Arena. Well it seems that Diablo 3 gamers have datamined the game’s client following the 1.0.5 patch and in it they have discovered some pretty interesting PvP tidbits. (more…)

Blizzard looking into turning Starcraft 2′s multiplayer into a free-to-play experience

I’ve never really fancied the free-to-play model as it usually leads gamers to spend more than they would have if they had bought the game outright. However it seems that the F2P model is catching on and it seems that Blizzard might be interested in it as well. If you thought that this might have something to do with their MMORPG, World of Warcraft, you’d be mistaken as apparently Blizzard is currently looking at perhaps turning the Starcraft 2 multiplayer experience into a F2P one. This was revealed (via PCGamesn) at Valencia eSports Congress by Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm’s lead designer Dustin Bowder. However this is not a guarantee and is by no means confirmation, but rather Blizzard just exploring the possibility.

According to Bowder, “We don’t know how [Blizzard] would monetize it. While it might be good fun for me to play against someone with only half the units available to them, that’s not going to be an enjoyable experience for them.” What do you guys think? Should Blizzard embrace the F2P model for Starcraft 2?

World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria is now live

Good news World of Warcraft players, in case you did not already know, the Mists of Pandaria expansion has been released! For those who pre-purchased the game, you guys should have no trouble playing the new expansion, barring any server issues of course. Given that there will probably be a rush to get into servers and roll the new Pandaren characters, we expect that some server hiccups, lag and disconnections might be a common problem until things start to balance out. For those who are hearing this for the first time, the Mists of Pandaria expansion is the fourth World of Warcraft expansion and it will introduce the new neutral Pandaren race, a new Monk class along with a host of new features while raising the level cap to 90. If this sounds like the expansion you’ve been waiting for, you can head on over to Blizzard’s World of Warcraft website to learn more about the game and where you will also be able to buy the game in either a standard edition, a Digital Deluxe edition or the Collector’s Edition which will only be available in physical copy via retailers.

Battle.net to get “Appear Offline” option soon

Normally, one would associate the “Appear Offline” status to be confined to the realm of instant messengers, but here we are with word that Battle.net gamers on World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, and Diablo III will soon be able to have the choice of selecting “Appear Offline” as part of one’s Battle.net social-status options, keeping Available, Busy, and Away company. It does make us pause and wonder for a moment – why didn’t Blizzard think of this right from the very beginning? Perhaps they did but haven’t figured it out, or it was totally overlooked – no matter, “Appear Offline” will soon arrive, where you can go ahead and do your own thing on one of the above mentioned games in complete radio silence without having your Real ID friends, BattleTag friends, and character-level friends to interrupt your personal quiet time.

After all, you will be seen as “Offline” in your friends’ list even though you are logged into a game.Expect the “Appear Offline” status to arrive at different times for World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, and Diablo III, simply because it will be included in future updates for individual games.

Diablo 3 patch 1.0.5 preview

Earlier this month, we read about how patch 1.0.5 for Diablo 3 will help fix the Trail of Cinders, but slightly more than a week later, here we are with a sneak peek as to what patch 1.0.5 will be able to deliver for gamers in Diablo 3 when it arrives. One of the major feature changes include Defensive Skill Changes that is said to alter defensive skills across the board, but that is not all there is to it as it will simultaneously reduce incoming damage as well. The net result? A survivability buff for players, in addition to an increase in build options as folks can take more risks without building up what was once thought to be defensive abilities . After all, isn’t the best defence a fantastic offence?

Blizzard releases patch 5.0.5 for World of Warcraft, patch notes available

When Blizzard released patch 5.0.4 for World of Warcraft, there were a couple of bugs with the release and a quick search will bring up multiple forum threads where users have noticed a sharp decline in their FPS despite running pretty good hardware. This was an issue that affected my game as well and the good news is that Blizzard has since released patch 5.0.5 which has brought about some bug fixes to the game. While it was not mentioned in the patch notes, I can attest to the fact that my FPS issues in the game have since been resolved and I have no problems running on Ultra settings (I had to turn it down to “Good” after 5.0.4). Either way if you want to see the changes that were introduced in 5.0.5, head on over to the World of Warcraft blog in the source link below for the details. In the meantime has patch 5.0.5 resolved the FPS issues that players had with 5.0.4?
