Soundfreaq brings lightning to CES 2013 in massive audio preview

It’s less than a couple of months away from CES 2013 now and brands large and small have already begun war on the media with releases – today’s big news from Soundfreaq contains one heck of a rundown of future sound products. This rundown includes the first lightning speaker docks for the iPhone 5 and iPad mini as well as a set of Dual System Streaming products for futuristic audio action.

This party begins with the Sound Platform 2, continues on with the Sound Rise Lightning, and rolls forward with Sound Step / Sound Step Recharge Lightning. If those names weren’t long enough to get you riled up about the Apple device friendly show about to be brought on by Soundfreaq, perhaps you’d better get a look at the first basic specifications:

Sound Platform 2 takes what the first iteration was and brings on more enhanced bass, high-volume quality, large speaker drivers, Tone Control galore, and UQ3 spacial enhancement. This all comes with dual USB charging ports for whatever you’ve got that’s chargeable via USB, a Universal Device Tray, and connectivity to basically any mobile device you’ve got on hand. You’ve also got a rechargeable battery pack and Bluetooth integration for wireless music action – all of this coming on February 17th, 2013 for $149.99.

Sound Step, Sound Step Recharge, and Sound Rise are all products that’ve been out in the past, but are now going to be offered up with the new Apple lightning connectors for futuristic iPhone 5 / iPad 4 / iPad mini connectivity. Sound Rise is at its heart an alarm clock disguised as an iPhone dock, here with Bluetooth wireless connectivity and USB charging as well. You can also connect with any smart device – Android, Windows Phone 8, BlackBerry included – with the USB charging port and 3.5mm headphone jack – make it yours!

Sound Step Recharge (and the non-recharge Sound Step) are massive beasts of audio magic in a compact size, here now with lightning dock integration. It’s got a rechargeable battery, works with iOS devices as well as every other kind of smart device with USB charging and headphone jack integration, and makes the sound jump with UQ3 spacial sound enhancement!

We’ll see more on final pricing and release dates for these updated units as well as the rest of the Soundfreaq line at CES 2013 – join us in January and stay tuned to SlashGear until them for every single early release, rumor, and hands-on experience!

Track Your Stuff (and More!)

Don’t you love getting old? Hair begins to gray or fall out, or both. You walk into a room and forget why. You lose your stuff – mind included on some days. OK, maybe not all of it is old age. Our busy society means little nuggets of information, previously thought of as important, may slip our minds. After all, you can eventually find the remote control or check outside to see if the dog was let out. But man, it would be nice to have a more reliable tool to help with these little quandaries or short term memory things.

SSI America, designers and makers of electronic automotive technology, want to prevent us from losing our minds. They far exceeded their goal on indiegogo and are going into production with Stick-N-Find – a Bluetooth low energy based locator sticker. Seriously, this falls into the ‘its about time’ category. Stick-N-Find is a US quarter sized electronic gadget. Stick it to anything you choose. Then download the app for iOS (iPhone 4S, 5; New iPad, Mini or Touch) or Android (in development, but will happen). Via Bluetooth the “stickers” are then tracked on the app up to 100 feet. Flip on the radar to see where your lost device is. Tap on the icon and enable the Stick-N-Find to beep or blink. The uses are really limitless. Stick them to your keys, pets, phones, tablets, headphones, remote controls, pets – anything you have a tendency to misplace!

That’s not all Stick-N-Find can do either. The Virtual Leash enables you to set an alert for a specific distance. When a Stick-N-Find gets beyond your distance you receive a message. Say you take the dog to the park but don’t want him going too far. Your phone will tell you when Fido strays. Conversely, another fun feature reverses the tether. When set up, the Find It function tells Stick-N-Find to beep or flash when in a certain range of the phone. Tasks like finding your luggage on the airport carousel become a no brainer! Recently announced – after achieving funding goal – is a new app too. StickNFind Task Launcher will now be able to control phone settings. Maybe you want your ringer to turn off when you go into your bedroom. Or maybe you want a specific song to play when you get into the car. No problem. StickNFind Task Launcher enables app and command control within the phone when in range of a “sticker.”

Now for more on the specs. The watch-type battery lasts for about a year and can be easily replaced. And the adhesive, though strong, enables you to move Stick-N-Find. The campaign does not close until mid-January on indiegogo. Get in on a two-pack Stick-N-Find for just $35 – a deal as retail for a two-pack is expected at $49.95. Larger options are available for bigger homes or offices too and investors receive theirs in March. So let your brain rest or worry about other stuff. Let Stick-N-Find remind you where things are in your life.

Apple TV getting Bluetooth keyboard functionality with iOS 6.1

For some, using an iOS device as a keyboard for Apple TV is good enough, but according to a new report from 9to5Mac, it won’t be long before Apple TV users have more options when it comes to keyboard input. Specifically, we’re talking about Bluetooth keyboard functionality, which is apparently a new feature that’s about to land in iOS 6.1. Spotted in the latest Apple TV beta, this new functionality will likely be a big hit with a lot of users.

That’s because the new Bluetooth menu allows you to completely control Apple TV with a wireless keyboard, no longer requiring that you use the remote or an iOS device for keyboard input. 9to5Mac claims that tracking down the content you want to watch “becomes a thousand times easier” when you’re using a physical keyboard, so there’s plenty of reason to be excited. Unfortunately, at this point in time it looks like Bluetooth pairing is rather limited.

For instance, it appears that only keyboards are supported here, as Bluetooth speakers and mice wouldn’t play nice with Apple TV. The same is true for connecting a Mac computer through Bluetooth – it’s a no go. Never fear though, because this functionality could be the first step in a larger Bluetooth roll out for Apple. Even better, it could potentially allow third parties to develop their own Bluetooth-based remotes for Apple TV, so this is definitely one feature to watch.

This functionality is available with second and third generation Apple TV boxes, so if you’re still rocking a first generation box, you’re unfortunately being left out in the cold. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Bluetooth keyboard support for Apple TV, remember, which means that the time may finally be here. Check out our story timeline below for more on Apple TV!

Casio’s iPhone-friendly G-Shock finally out, will adorn wrists for $180

Casio's iPhonefriendly GShock finally out for $180

It seems Casio’s G-Shock GB6900 hasn’t been mindful of its own raison d’être, turning up much later than expected. After making its first appearance way back in March 2011, rolling through FCC in July the same year, and then reportedly getting stalled by floods in Thailand, the Bluetooth 4.0-packing smart watch is finally available stateside for $180. Tardiness notwithstanding, the wearable gizmo is typically defiant of shock and water. However, its hero feature is hooking up with your iPhone (4S or newer) to sync time, throw up call / email alerts and letting you locate your misplaced smartphone. And while the timekeeper can’t let you be mayor, reveal objects’ secrets or serve up apps, at least it doesn’t hurt your wallet as much as some of its rivals.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: December 4, 2012

Welcome to Tuesday evening everyone. Today we found out that nightly builds to CyanogenMod 10.1 are ready to go for the Nexus 10, which comes just a short time after nightlies started rolling out for the Nexus 4. IDC said today that Android will likely stay on top in the battle for mobile dominance until 2016, with iOS placing in second throughout, so it looks like the mobile landscape won’t be changing all that much in the coming years. Verizon is set to begin rolling out targeted ad campaigns this week, but you’ll only see those ads if you give Verizon permission.

The Kindle app for iOS was updated today with X-Ray functionality in tow, but that wasn’t the only thing getting an iOS update. Gmail for iOS was updated to version 2.0, with YouTube getting an update on iPhone 5 and iPad. In other words, it wasn’t a bad day if you’re an iOS user and you happen to be using some of the platform’s most popular apps. Netflix has signed a deal with Disney, but unfortunately for all of you Disney fans, that deal won’t go into effect until 2016 rolls around, so you’ve a while to wait.

Speaking of Netflix, we found out today that the PlayStation 3 has become the number one device for streaming Netflix, while the Fuhu nabi Jr has arrived with an aging Tegra 2 processor under the hood. The cool little Black Diamond III multi-sensory Bluetooth speaker launched today, while the LaCie d2 external hard drive has been re-released with USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt functionality. Toshiba announced its new Excite 10 SE 10-inch tablet today, while the Samsung S Pebble music player touched down in the United States.

Samsung also introduced a new Pico Projector for Galaxy devices today, HP has a new printer out in India that doubles as a hotspot, and we got word that Google I/O 2013 will be kicking off on May 15 with tickets going on sale early next year. Moshi has a new line of accessories for the iPhone 5 and the Retina MacBook Pro, while Apple delivered an update for the iWork suite that brings mobile/desktop compatibility with it. Google confirmed that it had one time looked into creating its own wireless network, and finally tonight, Chris Burns gives his review of Gmail 2.0 on iOS. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Black Diamond III multi-sensory bluetooth speaker hits the lights

It’s not directly related to the fabulous early hit by the Hottest Band in the World, but will certainly look good while you’re playing it: this is the Black Diamond III multi-sensory Bluetooth speaker. This machine is the first Bluetooth speaker “capable of mimicking music beats and rhythms through color and movement,” so says Sales and Marketing Manager of Acase Tom Hsieh. And for those of you wondering why there’s a “III” on the tail of this little ball of magic, you’ll want to head back to the Black Diamond archives more than once.

This device is alternately titled BlackDiamond3 depending on where you look for it, and though its predecessors worked with the iPhone as a dock, this unit opens up to the full smart device universe with Bluetooth integration. You’ll be working with your iOS devices, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone – and whatever else you can connect with Bluetooth, notebooks included. Each unit contains two high-quality “diamond clear” left/right 3W*2 speakers and work with a remote control as well.

Inside you’ll find a fixed or flow set of colors up to what the folks at Yantouc say are “16,000,000 colors.” To power this device up all you’ve got to do is plug in via its AC-to-USB adapter and roll out with only 5W, 100 to 240V AC. This machine also has a bass resonant tube inside for low frequency music and a built-in equalizer for improving audio response by 10dB – hot stuff!

Even the packaging has been pumped up to make this unit “good for a gift” as they say with an 8-edges diamond design, all for $120 USD MSRP. We’ll be taking a good hands-on look at this device later this week – stay tuned! Meanwhile have a peek at our most recent gift guide for audio equipment to say up to date on what’s been fabulous this year – 2012, the year of the Bluetooth boom!
