hop! the following suitcase

True road warriors know that your hands are always needed. You figure the phone is in one hand, maybe a bag over the other shoulder with that hand also pulling your rollerboard. So where is the coffee supposed to go? And forget about grabbing a newspaper. Quite inconvenient. Needless to say, an extra hand would be convenient while going through airports.

Some creative designers in Spain have invented a solution that could potentially solve this traveler’s dilemma. “hop! the following suitcase” as it is known, uses technology to ease the hassles of travel by leaving you hands free. Wha? Yes, you heard me. hop! is a small suitcase. Contained in it are 3 sensors which sync to your smartphone via Bluetooth. They triangulate the signal from the phone to determine your location. Then the microprocessor takes over and directs the case – on caterpillar tracks – to follow behind your phone. See the video below for hop! in action.

Sure, hop! is a small suitcase. Maybe not enough for a road warrior. But hop! is also a concept. However it is in the final 50 for the prestigious James Dyson award – an international student design award. Plenty of attention may come their way if rewarded. And soon we may all have a little buddy following us through the airport.

A Phone’s Winter Friends

Winter is coming – or leaving…depending on your location. Spending time in frigid temperatures is not so fun. Less fun is hearing your phone ring while you are quickly walking through the cold. Or trying to listen to your tunes while keeping your noggin warm. hi-Fun, an Italian company, sells fun products geared to make our mobile music and phone lives easier. And we found a couple Winter-appropriate products that prove to do exactly that.

Welcome to hi-Call, a Bluetooth talking glove. hi-Call comes as a pair of warm gloves with a twist. The thumb of the left glove contains a speaker. The pinkie houses a microphone. Connect hi-Call to any Bluetooth-enabled phone and yep, you are listening and talking through your glove. Simple left wrist controls enable ending or starting of a call. Simply charge the left glove via USB before you go into the cold and chat away! Gloves are available in gray or black for men or women and sell for €49.99 (about $63).

Though not as revolutionary – a logical complement to hi-Call is hi-Hat. Why not keep your head warm while listening to your tunes? hi-Hat contains high performance speakers built right in so you can let the music take you away to a warmer place, at least in your mind. And if you prefer to keep your hi-Call gloves in your pocket, hi-Hat does contain a hands free speaker to make your calls. hi-Hat is currently available in 4 colors and can be yours for €39.99 (about $52).

So as you prepare your mobile life for the cold weather check into hi-Fun’s solutions to keep the tunes and calls coming – despite the temperature.

LarkLife Activity Band Motivates Exercise with Technology

Activity bracelets and other fitness gadgets are a great way to get motivated to get into shape. Instead of relying on paltry humans, your love for gadgets will keep you running when the lactic acid starts to settle into your legs! Well, that might still be a pipe dream, but check out Lark’s latest release. It’s kind of like a minimal version of the Nike+ FuelBand.

larklife activity monitor

The LarkLife will track your activity, from sleep patterns to food intake using a bracelet and a mobile app. For now, this will work only with iOS devices. It’s not waterproof, but splash-resistant, and has a pedometer inside to count your steps. It will be able to measure how long you sleep and how long it takes you to go to sleep. There’s a vibrating alarm built-into this band as well.

Just like other bracelets, you have to manually enter your food intake, which is a bit of a downer in my book, but the band uses Bluetooth Smart to automatically sync with your iPhone. It can also tell whether you’re running or walking, meaning that the app will log workouts even if you forget to enter them. The device will dish out advice during the day and reward “good behavior” with badges. It’s available for pre-order from Lark for $150(USD) and will be available before the holidays.

Larklife fitness tracker syncs your data over Bluetooth, knows when you're running instead of walking

In case you haven’t noticed, fitness gadgets are having something of a moment right now. The past year alone has seen the launch of Nike’s FuelBand, the ill-fated Jawbone Up and a refreshed line of Fitbit trackers. Now another product is arriving that promises to do basically the same thing — namely, track your activity, sleep patterns and food intake using a wearable gadget and mobile app. That thing you see up there is called Larklife and for now, at least, it works exclusively with iOS devices. It’s a splash-resistant (but not waterproof) band that has a pedometer inside, counting your steps throughout the day. It can also tell how long you sleep each night, as well as how long it takes you to nod off. There’s even a vibrating alarm built into the band — something we first saw on the Up earlier this year. (As it happens, Lark’s earlier products were sleep aids, so the inclusion of this feature actually makes a lot of sense.) As for monitoring your dietary habits, Larklife doesn’t automatically track your food intake, but the app does include a food diary where you can manually enter your meals.

Additionally, Larklife uses Bluetooth Smart to automatically sync with your iPhone so that you don’t have to plug the band into a PC just to update your fitness stats. (The new Fitbit trackers work this way this too.) Additionally, the band uses a proprietary technology that can discern when you’re running or walking, which means the app will log workouts even if you forget to enter them. The last intriguing bit is that the app dishes out smart, contextually aware advice. Didn’t get much sleep last night? Larklife will remind you to eat more protein than usual at breakfast, so that you have enough energy to get you through the day. The app also rewards good behavior in the form of iOS notifications and colorful on-screen badges, though competing products admittedly take a very similar approach when it comes to keeping users motivated.

Larklife is up for pre-order starting today, and is priced at $150 — a rather large premium over the new Fitbit One, which will sell for $100. As for precise availability, all we know is that retailers will start stocking Larklife “before the holidays.” Whether that means Halloween, Thanksgiving or some gift-giving celebration will be revealed some other day.

Zooka wireless speaker arrives at Target Stores

Do you think that it is truly possible to live out a wireless and paperless lifestyle? I think that a paperless environment is not really that possible, as there is always a paper trail that is far better to keep records, but for wireless connectivity? It really does make sense though. After all, I am quite sure that a whole lot of us have already encountered tangled cables and wires with the myriad of our devices and gadgets, that the wireless charging feature found in the new Nokia Lumia 920 is definitely a plus point. Not only that, no longer do you need to run LAN cables throughout your home just to take advantage of the Internet connection from your router, right? Well, I guess the same can also be said of wireless speakers, and Zooka has just announced their wireless speaker’s availability over at Target Stores around the US.

Carbon Audio is the company behind the Zooka wireless speaker, where their fashion forward Bluetooth audio accessory will be able to hook up to your favorite tablet, notebook, ultrabook or smartphone – as long as those devices themselves come with integrated Bluetooth connectivity, of course. After all, since Christmas is creeping up on us slowly but surely, it makes perfect sense to have a wireless speaker like the Zooka make your list.

Carbon Audio mentioned, “That’s one reason we are so excited for the Zooka to be available in Target stores. Target’s unique ability to introduce high design to mass markets is perfectly aligned with our design principles and philosophies.”

The brilliantly designed Zooka is no shy piece of device, even though it might look like it. Packing quite a powerful, high quality audio experience, it has been specially integrated into form factor that is sleek and sexy. Connecting to other Bluetooth-enabled devices are a snap, and it will definitely be able to turn and transform your Apple or Android devices into a big sound audio system, letting you enjoy games, listen to music, and watch movies up to five times louder. All you need to do is slide the Zooka onto the edge of your device, or you can just pair it in order to enjoy big audio, full, rich sound which is touted to light up a room from as far as 30 feet away.

Apart from that, $99 Zooka also comes with a built in microphone, allowing you to pair it with your phone for hands-free conversations.

Parrot Zikmu Solo reaches US in November, makes a tower of wireless sound yours for $999

Parrot Zikmu Solo reaches US in November, makes a tower of wireless sound yours for $999

Parrot has taken some time trotting out the Zikmu Solo speaker since we first saw it at CES, but those enamored with very vertical audio can rest easy now that the unit has a North American release schedule. Both Canada and the US can buy the Philippe Starck-crafted speaker in November, when it will cost $999 for Americans in its black and white guises (sorry, no red for now). While that’s a lot to pay for a 100W speaker, Parrot is counting on the unique acoustic design, a conventional iOS dock and a mix of Bluetooth, NFC and WiFi to tempt people away from the land of horizontal sound. It’s undoubtedly one of the easiest ways to make a speaker dock the focus of a room — and that’s part of the point, isn’t it?

Edifier releases the Esiena and Bric Bluetooth speakers for iOS devices

Image

With the arrival of the iPhone 5 and its legacy-wrecking Lightning port, this holiday season is likely to be the last that heavily features the now-obsolete dock connector. Two products caught in the wrong turn of history are Edifier’s new pair of iOS device docks for home and on the go. If you need a “big” sound in a modest package, then the Esiena Bluetooth offers 3-inch full-range drivers and a class D digital amplifier — and it’s also packing Auxiliary, USB, SD card inputs and a digital FM radio. If you’re more the adventuring type, then the portable Bric Bluetooth offers 2.75-inch full range drivers and the same class D amplifier in addition to a traveling pouch to keep the hardware safe on your travels. The Esiena will set you back $300 and the Bric a slender $100, with both arriving in the US and Canada from today.

Tivoli's newly Bluetoothed radios hit the market

Is your tabletop radio jealous of all the attention you lavish on your smartphone and tablet? Now everyone can play nice. Announced earlier this year, Tivoli’s finally offering its Model One BT up for purchase, bringing Bluetooth device streaming to the fancy table-tap AM/FM radio. That $260 unit is joined by the PAL BT ($300) radio and Blucon Music Receiver ($150), which brings Bluetooth functionality to your home audio system. The latter two, up now for pre-order, are set to ship by the end of the month.
