LevelUp unveils payment docks that take both NFC and QR codes, leave out the guesswork

Most stores accepting mobile payments usually have to take just one format, whether it’s Google Wallet, Square or another flavor that you probably can’t use. LevelUp is convinced you shouldn’t have to choose platforms: it just revealed a new payment dock that will recognize both the company’s existing QR code system as well as NFC. It’s much easier sight on the eyes than typical NFC terminals, to boot. Just don’t expect a one-for-one recreation of systems like Google Wallet or Isis. Rather than expose your banking details by holding them in a chip, LevelUp’s NFC is just used to move the transaction along — if it’s used to get things started, shoppers can either switch to a QR code or complete the transaction with a second tap. The company is mostly planning to replace its existing payment points across the US with the NFC-aware models. Bluetooth 4.0 is an option for the future, however, which could make LevelUp even more of a Swiss Army Knife for the world of mobile commerce.

Proficient Audio launches MaxTV MT2 speaker box, soundbars start job hunt

If Proficient Audio’s new MaxTV MT2 speaker box is anything to go by, the company obviously isn’t enamored with the latest slew of slim, elegant soundbars. As the picture shows, it’s designed to act as a platform for your TV and can support up to 160 pounds — enough for even the biggest of flatscreens. The hard, no-grill design shows off the box’s two 1-inch tweeters, four 2.5-inch mid-range speakers and two 5.25-inch, down-facing subs. Four internal 20-watt, two-channel digital amps take care of the power, and with two of those dedicated to the woofers, we’d expect some serious neighbor-waking bass. It’s not just for your TV either, as the built-in Bluetooth supports audio streaming from any of your favorite gadgets. The soundbar-on-steroids is shipping now for 599 bones, and if that sounds a little steep, Proficient Audio assures you that “once someone hears the difference MaxTV makes, they will buy it.”

Nokia unveils new Luna Bluetooth headset, complete with wireless charging

Yesterday saw no lack of accessory reveals for Nokia‘s incoming Windows Phone 8 devices, the Lumia 820 and 920. It seems that one was left out of the party, though: the new Luna Bluetooth headset, which is naturally recommended for use with Nokia’s two new devices. Nokia unveiled the new headset today, giving us an ad with a rather bumping soundtrack to go along with the announcement.

Nokia is hitting the whole wireless charging deal hard with its line up of new Lumia accessories and devices, and it’s no different with the Luna. The Luna appears to function just like any other Bluetooth headset, but there kicker here is in the ability to wirelessly charge. Just plop the Luna’s cradle down on one of Nokia’s new charging pillows or charging plates, and you’re good to go (or at least you will be when your headset is done charging).

The Luna comes with Nokia’s Always Ready technology, which takes care of powering up, connecting to your phone, and answering calls automatically once you remove it from the cradle. As is typically the case with Nokia peripherals, you have a range of colors to choose from, including blue, white, red, black, and of course, bright yellow. The battery in this tiny lil’ beast provides enough power for up to 8 hours of talk time and 35 hours of standby, so the instances where you’ll be on the verge of running out of juice will likely be few and far between.

However, those moments do happen, and just to be on the safe side of things, Nokia has included a micro USB port on the cradle for regular old wired charging should the need arise. There isn’t any pricing or release date information available on the Luna Bluetooth headset yet, but we can probably expect it arrive around the same time as the Lumia 920 and 820. Stay tuned for new details, as we’ll likely be getting more soon.

SteelSeries Free Touchscreen Gaming Controls and Free Mobile Gaming Controller aren’t free, we go hands-on (video)

SteelSeries Free Touchscreen Gaming Controls and Free Mobile Gaming Controller aren't free, we go handson

The capacitive touch capabilities of today’s devices are perfect for a great many things — but traditional gaming just isn’t among them. When it comes to “fixing” gaming controls on touch devices, there are two avenues of approach, and SteelSeries is headed down both of them: touchscreen augmenting nubs, and wireless gamepads. The firm lumps both of these solutions into its new “freedom to play” line of accessories — and though both of them echo products we’ve seen before, these peripherals play their roles exceedingly well.

New Nokia Luna Bluetooth headsets, now with wireless charging

New Nokia Luna Bluetooth headsets, now with wireless charging

So yesterday saw a whole bunch of new Nokia-related goodies. There were phones (of course), charging pillows, a slew of retailers offering charging stations, and a bevy of new apps. One thing that didn’t get a mention was the new Luna Bluetooth headsets. These may look familiar, but in keeping with the trend, these now also support wireless charging. As always, you have a near rainbow of color choices, and can expect up to eight hours talk time and 35 hours on standby. The NFC-enabled headsets do also have a micro-USB port, should you find yourself away from wireless power options. Sadly, no word on pricing and availability at this time.

Nendo/Logitec Stylo Bluetooth Headset Looks Like a Sci-Fi Communicator

I admit to owning a Bluetooth headset. This was years ago, and I was often driving in my car, so I needed one to field calls from employees, as well as my bosses and clients. Needless to say that these days, I don’t need one, and rarely talk on my phone. However if you need to talk often on your smartphone, then this Nendo-designed headset looks like a cool choice.

Nendo(JP) designed this ultra-modern headset, called Stylo – the French word for pen – since it looks kind of like one. They designed it for the Japanese company Logitec(JP) (not to be confused with Logitech (WTF?)).

They used anodized aluminum sections for the main housing, and the mechanical guts are packed into a stylus-like shape, which can clip to a front pocket when not in use. The lightweight, 8-gram device has a rechargeable battery that provides you with 5 hours of talk time.

Sony VAIO Duo 11 slides its way past the FCC

Sony VAIO Duo 11 slides its way past the FCC

Sony is clearly bent on getting the VAIO Duo 11 to market on time — just as we’re recovering from our post-IFA jet lag, the Windows 8 slider has popped up for approval at the FCC. The PC put through the wringer is very much like what we saw at the show, with 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC and that signature stylus on offer. There’s no sign of 3G or 4G for the road warrior crowd. We don’t have any clues as to the exact US release timing from the FCC’s sign-off, but it does clear a path for an American release side by side with the European model in late October, if Sony yearns for some international synchronicity.

Casio G-Shock GB-6900AA And GB-5600AA Bluetooth-enabled Watches

Sony is back with its latest Bluetooth-enabled watches namely the G-Shock GB-6900AA and GB-5600AA. These watches are able to connect up with Apple’s iPhone 4S via Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to keep informed of any incoming calls, emails or text messages. Both watches also feature an audio alert that helps you find your phone in case you are unable to locate them with a single button press from your iPhone. Casio will release the G-Shock GB-6900AA and GB-5600AA Bluetooth-enabled watches in October 2012. [Ubergizmo]

Sony unveils two new ES receivers that are the first with Control4 built-in, plus one without

Sony unveils two new ES receivers that are the first devices with Control4 builtin, plus one without

Wondering where Sony would go next with its high-end line of ES receivers? The answer is apparently home automation. As we’ve seen the segment heat up with competition from companies like your cable TV provider and even Google (does anyone remember Android@Home?), Control4 and Sony have announced at CEDIA 2012 that they are partnering up to create a simpler option for the custom install market. While it doesn’t address our main gripe with Control4 — that it needs an authorized dealer to install it or tweak the setup, with all the associated costs — it does make the STR-DA5800ES (announced last week at IFA) and STR-DA2800ES receivers an easy choice for custom builds by integrating the company’s software directly into them. That means less wiring and complication for setup, and not only do the receivers themselves tie in with the system, Sony’s ES control apps for iOS and Android can also control the home’s automated features.

The necessary license to activate the software costs $300 if you buy it along with the receiver, which will cost $2,099 for the STR-DA5800ES and $999 for the STR-DA2800ES. Still want the ES-level build quality, built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and AirPlay support but aren’t keen on home automation? Opt for the STR-DA1800ES, priced at $699 — more details are in the press releases after the break.
