Kinetic Rain sculpture makes art in mid-air

Airport terminals can be soul-destroying places at the best of times, with little to distract you as wait for your connection, so we can only hope we end up killing time at Singapore Airport’s Terminal 1 on our next trip. The refurbished terminal has a new “kinetic sculpture” called Kinetic Rain by ART+COM, consisting of 1,216 individually controlled copper droplets that can be moved to create ephemeral shapes, waves and more.

Each droplet is actually a lightweight aluminum shape clad in copper, and suspended from a narrow-gage steel wire connected to a precise motor. A computer controls two banks of 608 droplets, running through a 15 minute display of shimmering choreography, at times creating the outline of aircraft or other geometric forms.

Spotlights underneath, meanwhile, allow the droplets to sparkle as they move, as well as creating interesting interplays of shadow on the ceiling above. Part of what makes it so impressive is the cleanness and crispness of the movement: there’s no bounce in the wires or even any apparent lateral movement, and your eyes quickly overlook any glimpses of the wires.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen precision control over individual parts of a sculpture used in this way. Car company BMW has a similar installation at its BMW Museum in Munich, Germany, dating back to 2009, and also made by the team at ART+COM:

BMW’s 3 and 7 Series to be the first with Nuance’s Dragon Drive! Messaging aboard

http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/09/nuance-dragon-drive-messaging-on-bmw-7-3-series/

It somehow feels like it was only yesterday that Nuance unveiled its Dragon Drive! creation to the world, hoping to in the process make drivers’ lives easier by delivering a fresh eyes / hands-free messaging system inside connected cars. Unfortunately, back then the savvy company didn’t announce any partnerships with auto manufacturers — still, we had a feeling it wouldn’t be too long before one of them would want to come along for the voice dictation ride. The good news is, that’s about to change pretty soon. Per the outfit itself, BMW’s decided to bring the Dragon Drive! tech to its 2012 7 Series later this month, with the 3 Series Touring and the eco-friendly 3 Series ActiveHybrid expected to get it “later this year.” Notably, Dragon Drive! will offer multi-language support, including English, Spanish, Italian, French and German. There’s no word yet on just how much the fee for the service will be, but we do know those who land themselves one of these new Beemers will get a two-month trial to take Dragon Drive! for a quick spin.

BMW will be the first to feature Nuance’s Dragon Drive! Messaging technology

Nuance Communications unveiled Dragon Drive in May this year. Dragon Drive hopes to provide car owners the capability to send and read text messages through voice using its voice recognition technology. Nuance previously said that its messaging service will be followed by other services soon, which will include controls for listening to music, web browsing, directions and more. Today, Nuance is announcing that German automaker BMW will be the first car manufacturer to utilize Dragon Drive! Messaging.

Nuance and BMW partner on Dragon Drive! Messaging

Is there some kind of application that won’t feature Nuance’s Dragon voice recognition in the future? The company has announced a partnership with BMW that will see its Dragon Drive! Messaging service used in the 2012 BMW 7 Series, BMW 3 Series Touring, and BMW 3 Series ActiveHybrid. The 2012 BMW 7 Series will be the first car to feature the Messaging feature when it hits the market this month.

If you don’t know what Dragon Drive! Messaging is, you can probably take a guess. Users will be able to talk as normal and have the system transcribe messages and emails. That means hands will remain on the wheel and eyes on the road, reducing distractions and hopefully accidents as a result. There are some finer controls too, so you can speak certain commands to add spacing or shift paragraphs in emails, as well as adding correct punctuation.

The service will be free for the first 60 days, and after that you’ll have to pay Nuance a yearly subscription fee. Still, there’s support for six languages, which includes US and UK English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish. BMW also has some of its own voice commands, like calling contacts or pulling up turn-by-turn navigation.

BMW M USB Key

BMW M USB Key

BMW has rolled out a new USB flash drive that looks like a BMW key. The BMW M USB Key features carbon patterns on the front and back and the BMW M logo. Each purchase comes equipped with a slim lanyard, an included USB cable and a gift box. The BMW M USB Key provides an 8GB of storage capacity. If you are interested, you can buy the BMW M USB Key for $38.74 a pop. [Product Page]

Flash Drive Packed inside a Real BMW M Keyfob

Sometimes I run across tech products that cross two different geek genres. That is certainly the case with this cool flash drive that merges car guy geekery with tech geek appeal. This official BMW flash drive has 8 GB of flash storage inside and looks like the actual M series carbon fiber key fob you get with factory hopped up BMW sports cars.

The flash drive has buttons that look like the ones for unlocking the door and the trunk, and has the official BMW logo and the M logo as well. The USB connector can be extended or retracted by pressing the trunk release button. The other buttons on the flash drive key fob surface do nothing but sit there looking authentic.

If you absolutely have to have one of these for yourself, you can order one direct from BMW for only $38. However, if you go full poser, attach it to your keychain, and pretend you actually own a BMW M vehicle, car guys will mock you.

BMW USB key won’t unlock your car

BMW USB KeyIf you want to fool people into thinking you drive a BMW or you just like the idea of owning a key that looks like it unlocks a Bimmer, you’re in luck. BMW has just released a USB flash drive that is designed to look like a BMW key. To extend or retract the USB connector – just hit the trunk button. The other buttons serve no purpose other than to make it look realistic. A pretty cool flash drive that I don’t mind having in my collection. The BMW USB key comes with 8GB of storage and a USB extension cable for computers with hard to reach slots. Pick one up on BMW’s website for $38 apiece.

BMW and Toyota sign deal to collaborate on sports car and EV technology

BMW and Toyota sign deal to collaborate on EV technology and future sports vehicle

There’s not a lot of specifics to be had on this one just yet, but BMW and Toyota have inked a new deal that will see them collaborate on far more than the batteries they’ve already agreed to work on together. According to the automakers, the new arrangement will see them focus on four key areas: a fuel cell system, powertrain electrification, lightweight technologies and, last but not least, joint development of the “architecture and components for a future sports vehicle.” Unfortunately, neither party is offering much indication about the types of vehicles we might see as a result. BMW’s Norbert Reithofer said only that the goal of the partnership is to “further strengthen our competitive position in sustainable future technologies,” while Toyota’s Akio Toyoda notes that “BMW and Toyota both want to make ever-better cars,” and that he’s “excited to think of the cars that will result from this relationship.”

BMW and Toyota working on new sports car and eco-tech

BMW and Toyota have inked an extension to their collaboration agreement, working together on fuel cells, electric powertrains, lightweight components and, most excitingly, “a future sports vehicle.” The new memorandum of understanding (MoU) will see the German and Japanese companies team up for “long-term strategic collaboration” with BMW bringing its sportscar prowess and Toyota its green technologies expertise to the table.

“BMW and Toyota both want to make ever-better cars. We respect each other. And I think this is shown by our taking the next step only six months since the signing of our initial agreement” Akio Toyoda of Toyota said in a statement today. “Toyota is strong in environment-friendly hybrids and fuel cells. On the other hand, I believe BMW’s strength is in developing sports cars. I am excited to think of the cars that will result from this relationship.”

The initial co-development agreement was signed back in December 2011, with BMW and Toyota starting joint research into future motor technologies. It also included an engine-sharing deal, that will see BMW-made 1.6 liter and 2.0 liter diesel engines show up in Toyota cars on sale in Europe from 2014.

A follow-up addendum in March this year focused on electric vehicle battery research. Although both firms already have hybrid cars on the road, the new deal would see them work on increasing the performance and capacity of lithium-ion battery cells using new material combinations for the cathodes, anodes, and electrolytes.

Today’s announcement throws lighter chassis and other components into the mixture, along with working together on efficient electric powerplants and fuel cell systems. There will also be collaboration on “joint development of architecture and components for a future sports vehicle” though there is no timeline for when we might see the fruits of that project shared publicly.
