DNA Double Helix-Shaped Bookshelf: Reading Your Genetic Code

This double helix-shaped bookshelf is perfect for all the twisted reads that you might have in your library. Of course, you can put any of your books on this shelf regardless of their plot, but you get the point.

It was designed by Milano Furniture and features six feet of spiraling shelves. They’re clearly inspired by the double helix structure of human DNA. The bookcase’s twisted form holds 13 shelves that are arranged at different angles in order to maintain balance to the structure.

Aside from books, you can also use it to stack your CD, DVD/Blu-ray or video game collection.

Marvel at this Incredible Hulk Bookcase

Hulk ANGRY! Hulk SMASH! Hulk READ! Hmmm, actually I’m not too sure about that last part. Though we do know that Bruce Banner is a brilliant doctor and nuclear physicist, so he probably is quite well-read. So what better place for Dr. Banner to keep his books safe from his fits of radioactive rage than inside this Hulk bookcase?

hulk bookcase

It’s made by Whittled in Wood – the same folks behind the epic AT-AT bookcase, and made from birch plywood. Though from everything I can tell, there was no whittling involved, but I’m not going to argue with the Hulk. Naturally, it’s been painted in Hulk green – which I think should really be a standard paint color at the hardware store – along with Iron Man Red, Batman Black, and The Tick Blue.

The Incredible Hulk Bookcase sells for $800(USD) over on Etsy.

AT-AT Walker Bookcase: The Empire Strikes Book

There aren’t many more iconic creations from the Star Wars universe than the AT-AT Imperial walkers from The Empire Strikes Back. Sure, they ended up having an Achilles’ heel (or four of them), but I’d like to see you design a walking weapon that can’t be tripped. Fans of the AT-AT will definitely appreciate this piece of furniture – a bookcase made in the form of the Imperial walker.

Diana over at Bit Rebels spotted this awesome AT-AT bookshelf by Whittled in Wood. It’s perfect for holding onto your Star Wars books and collectibles, and while it might designed for a kid’s room, I don’t see any reason why you adults can’t enjoy it too. It’s handmade from birch plywood and other woods, and held together with screws and dowel rods. That sounds pretty sturdy to me, but you still won’t want to let any Rebel snow speeders get near it with tow cables.

The AT-AT bookshelf is available over on Whittled in Wood’s Etsy shop for $565(USD). While you’re over there, you might want to pick up a Millenium Falcon

Parents Who Own Bookshelves Raise Kids Who Do Better in School

By conventional wisdom, the things we own don’t define us—no matter how much we hope they will. But according to science, there are some reliable correlations between who we are and what we own.

Yamaha intros mini audio systems with iOS remote control, explosion of colors

Yamaha intros a quartet of bookshelf audio systems with iOS remote control, panoply of colors

We’re well acquainted with both connected bookshelf audio systems and colorful speakers — seeing both in one place, though, is still a rarity. Yamaha reckons the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Its MCR-B142 and MCR-042 both put out 30W of sound taken from a 30-pin Apple device dock, USB, aux-in or old-fashioned CDs, but they also come in 10 different colors; anyone who’s wanted a purple stereo to match their crushed velvet decor will be right at home. Both the B142 and a more subdued, desktop-sized TSX-B232 will also receive audio through Bluetooth, and a free iOS app lets us steer the two systems without leaving the couch. These ship later this month along with the B232’s wireless-free sibling, the TSX-132. Just be ready to pay a premium — the roster starts at $400 for the MCR-042, and scales up to $550 for the TSX-B232.

The TSX-B232 and MCR-B142 models feature Bluetooth, enabling users to wirelessly stream music to these systems from smartphones and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. IKEA Expedit Workstation Hack: Bibiophiles Rejoice!

I use IKEA Stolmen components as my library shelves, but this sweet setup makes me think that the Expedit series could be even more versatile. This convenient workstation was nested inside an Expedit bookshelf, allowing its owner to maximize the efficiency of his available space.

ikea expedit hack 1

Space was at a premium in Jason Outlaw’s one bedroom apartment. So he decided to use his Expedit as not only his bookshelf, but as his computer workstation and a TV stand. Jason added IKEA Non-Spotlights to add a bit of light, but the cooler, energy-efficient LED Dioders could work pretty well too. A slide-out Kensington keyboard holder fit his MacBook perfectly. Because of the depth of the shelves, his radio and receiver are hidden away behind books, and speakers are used as bookends. When not in use, the TV is covered up by a removable art panel.

It’s a cool hack, though I prefer large desks to allow my clutter to spread out.

Dark Knight Bookshelves: When Your Kindle is in Ruin, You Have My Permission to Buy

While most of us have converted to reading digital formats instead of traditional paper books, many of us still have a collection of reading material that deserves to be preserved in physical form – like classic comics, anime or art books. So if you have just a few books that need a home, what better place to keep them than in a Batman bookshelf?

batman bookshelf

These custom-made bookshelves from Fahmi Sani of Fiction Furniture are inspired by Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight series, with the sharp-edged Bat-symbol associated with those flicks. It’s the perfect thing for keeping reading materials in your Bat-cave.

And for those of you who can’t decide if you like the old or new Batman logo better, he’s got a schizophrenic version for you guys too. Though if a bat had lop-sided wings like this, it would probably only be able to fly in a circle – if it could fly at all:

They’re both available over on his Etsy shop for $267 Australian Dollars (~$284 USD).

TARDIS Bookshelf: Silence in the Library

I admit, despite e-books being all the rage these days, I still love a good old-fashioned book in my hands. The problem becomes one of storage since they take up room. We need something that is bigger on the inside, like this Doctor Who TARDIS bookshelf.
tardis bookshelf

This amazing TARDIS bookshelf was created by Tumblr user bowtiesandginghamshirts. As far as I can tell and it can hold the entire library of Gallifrey. I need a bookshelf like this one.

It even lights up and plays the Doctor Who theme. Wanna know how to make one? He has posted a How-To, so you can build your own. Just don’t expect it to hold as many books as THE Library.

Bookworm Wrap-Around Bookshelf Chair Gives Bookworms Their Own Little Book Nook

Now here’s another piece of furniture that book lovers would love to own: the Bookworm. It reminds me a little of the Sunflower Chair, which features a plushy seat that’s surrounded by a roundabout bookshelf.

Bookworm WraparoundThe Bookworm also features a seat surrounded by shelves all around, but in a different, more modern kind of way. The seat doesn’t look as cushy, but it still definitely looks like a comfortable place to get your read on.

The shelf is supported by a single stainless steel leg that’s attached to one side – presumably that’s all it needs to keep from falling over. The rest of the chair is constructed from thin sheets of MDF and flexible plywood.

The Bookworm is available for purchase from Atelier 010. They’re made to order, so if you’re interested, send the makers an email to ask for the price and make your order.

This Dream House Was Entirely Built Around a Giant Three-Story-High Bookshelf

I love this house, built in Rotterdam by Dutch architectural firm Shift. What a wonderful and perfectly executed idea: to build an entire four-story-high house around a gigantic bookshelf that goes across all floors. It really looks beautiful—and useful too. More »
