GameMaxx PrankPack is Almost Believable

With the holidays fast approaching we will all be getting together with family and friends to exchange gifts and celebrate. It’s also a time to remember to not get excited about your gift until you open the box and are sure what’s on the box is really what you’re getting. Take, for example, the exciting GameMaxx game controller.

gamemaxx prankpack 1

Prank Pack boxes have pictures and a description of products that looks real on the outside. However, you fill the box with whatever junk you want. I suggest socks. A hilarious new prank box has surfaced in time for 2012 gift giving called the GameMaxx that shows what claims to be the largest game controller ever. The massive controller says it will hold 1 gallon of fluid and has a 24-inch straw to keep you hydrated while you play.

The box also says that the jumbo gamepad has a multiple speed fan, tons of buttons, a retractable 36″ antenna, and its own sound system. This would be the perfect prank for someone who likes gaming in your life. The only downsides include the fact that if you give this to a kid someone is bound to throw a tantrum, and $8 is kind of pricey for an empty cardboard box.

Box experience is now enhanced

If you are a user of Box, then surely you would be interested to hear about a major announcement that concerns Box – where the company intends to make it even easier for their customers to use today as well as in the future. We are talking about 140,000 businesses and 14 million users thereabouts here, where they use Box to share, access and manage content from virtually anywhere as long as there is a decent Internet connection.

Box has received a new header which will place search at the center of your experience, and as you type in the search bar, relevant results will start to pop up, and you can even hover over a file to check out who was the creator. Sporting easily-recognizable icons that make navigation a snap from anywhere within Box, your collection of pending tasks and messages are also located in the header, letting you find out what you need to attend to with but a single click.

The new Box experience should be introduced to everyone’s accounts in the coming weeks, so be patient if you haven’t yet received yours!

Box announces new features: improved search, file editing and a more social UI (video)

Skydrive, iCloud and Amazon Cloud Drive users have all been treated to upgrades recently, and now Box has announced a bunch of improvements are coming to its cloud platform for businesses. The portal header has been redesigned with a focus on searching and navigating quickly, and you can find other users at your company that bit easier, too. Additionally, Box Edit is ready to drop its beta suffix and, as long as you’ve got the relevant program installed, you can create files, edit them and save right back to the cloud from within the system. And, if you didn’t think the whole experience was social enough, an added ‘like’ feature for files will help you keep up with the latest trending process docs. The updates are due to roll out “over the coming weeks,” but until then, why not let an extremely sincere Box rep walk you through them in the video below.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 25, 2012

We’ve had a rather interesting Tuesday here at SlashGear, thanks in no small part to RIM. The company held its BlackBerry Jam today, introducing us to new BlackBerry 10 features like Peek and Flow. We also learned that BlackBerry 10 will come with support for your favorite social networks, even offering a native Facebook app. Carrier testing on the new mobile OS will begin next month, and RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said that BlackBerry has a good shot at becoming number three behind Android and iOS.

We found out today that Apple’s new Lightning adapters come with an authentication chip built in, and that New York City is experiencing a sharp increase in the number of Apple thefts. Apple’s Phil Schiller said that the scuffs and scratches some users are experiencing with their iPhone 5s are normal, and a teardown of the iPhone 5′s A6 processor provided some fresh insight into what’s going on under the hood. There’s a new way for you to bypass the 3-4 week wait for an iPhone 5 to be delivered to your home, and Instagram was updated with support for iOS 6 while Google delivered its own iOS update for Google Voice.

The Samsung Galaxy Note II will be launching in the UK on October 1, and speaking of Samsung, we heard whispers that the company is planning to launch a Tizen-based Galaxy smartphone. New reports are saying that the Kindle Fire HD is in for some serious competition from the Google Nexus 7, and Microsoft’s Kinect could potentially help save lives in a new map making gadget. Intel’s CEO claims that Windows 8 is being released with a number of bugs left unfixed, and Tesla has slashed its profit forecast after its new Model S hit some bumps in production.

Google Maps apparently won’t be coming to iOS 6 until Apple offers an invitation, and the Jaguar F-TYPE suffered a very sexy leak today. Box has issued an update for its iOS app and it’s offering some free stuff to all iOS users, while some labor experts are warning that there could be more Foxconn riots in the future. Sony announced today that a number of October retail releases will be on PSN from launch day, and is even offering PS Plus subscribers a 10% discount on the purchase price of most of them. Finally tonight, Gameloft has released a new trailer for Modern Combat 4, and we have to say that we were pretty impressed.

That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up! Enjoy the rest of your night everyone!

Box issues iOS 6 update, kicks off new promotion

Just like many other iOS developers, the folks behind Box have launched an update for their app. Like most of these freshly-released updates, the one hitting Box users today is a little on the slim side, updating the app for iOS 6 and the iPhone 5, along with enhancing graphics for those using the app on a Retina iPad. Other than that, Box developers have issued a number of “bug fixes and performance improvements” with this latest update.

So, there isn’t too much going on with this new update, but those who have updated to iOS 6 or are using the cloud storage and sharing service on Apple’s latest iPhone or iPad will definitely want to check it out. The update is only one part of the story, however, as Box has kicked off a brand new promotion for all iOS users to celebrate this latest release. Starting today, new and existing Box users on iOS all qualify for expanded storage and free access to BoxSync.

Anyone who signs into Box from an iOS device will get 10GB of storage for free, twice the amount that Box normally provides for free accounts. Also included in this deal is free access to BoxSync, which allows users to sync their files across Windows and Mac. All you need to do is sign into your Box account (or create a new one) sometime within the next month and your free 10GB of storage will be activated immediately, while your free access to BoxSync will go live within 48 hours.

This offer ends on October 31, but Box makes it very clear that these bonuses will stick with your account for life. Not bad if you happen to be using the service on iOS. You can get the latest version of Box straight from the App Store right now [download link], so if you use Box on a regular basis, be sure to hit up that download. Check out our timeline below for more posts on Box!

Box Accelerator triples cloud upload speeds versus its rivals, comes to syncing apps soon video

Upstream speeds are frequently the bottlenecks for cloud storage: an entire company might be held back waiting for that last presentation video to go online before the big meeting. Box wants much more parity through Accelerator, a custom infrastructure that should make uploads hum. It uses Amazon’s EC2 for help, but the real magic comes through a mix of Box’s own network and special prioritization. Accelerator goes beyond just location to factor in the browser, OS and other criteria that could affect a data packet’s journey. The company claims through outside studies that its average 7MB/s speeds make it the upload king by a wide margin, to the tune of 2.7 times its fastest worldwide rival and 3.1 times any of its American counterparts. Peak speeds are up to 10 times faster than before, if you go by the company’s word. Most of the focus is on corporate customers and speeding up access near the provider’s ten global access points, but Box is planning both to ramp up performance in more areas and bring Accelerator to the company’s syncing platforms in the near future — an obvious lure for would-be Dropbox customers.

Box Accelerator boosts uploads with new global hubs

Cloud storage specialist Box has decided that it’s not enough to simply have your backup in the ether, but instead it matters how quickly you can get it there. Box Accelerator, launched today, promises 10x faster upload speeds than before, thanks to new network infrastructure that spreads upload hubs across the globe. In fact, independent testing suggests, Box now comfortably outperforms Dropbox, Microsoft’s SkyDrive, and Google Drive.

There are now network endpoints in Portland, at Box HQ in SF, in Chicago, New York, Sao Paulo, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, and Sydney. According to Box, those closest to one of the new endpoints will see the best speeds, but everyone will benefit no matter where they are, and what time they’re uploading.

Upload speeds make a big difference to a user’s experience of a storage service, as they’re one likely bottleneck for getting your data pushed out to the cloud. If the pipe is too narrow, it simply takes too long to upload; that can be a significant hindrance if you’re doing offsite backup of your servers or other systems.

Box Accelerator is initially available to Box’s enterprise and business customers, though we’re hoping that regular users will also get a chance at the fatter pipe soon enough.

EchoStar HDX-410 set-top box runs native ICS, supports terrestrial broadcasts (hands-on video)

EchoStar HDX410 settop box runs native Android 40, supports terrestrial broadcasts handson video

You may be familiar with EchoStar’s satellite-based (Dish Network) and Sling Media (Slingbox) products, but the company also manufactures set-top boxes for third-party providers, as well as free-to-air services in the UK. It’s this last grouping that’ll be able to take advantage of the Android-based device we saw today, assuming it does in fact make its way to market. The HDX-410 runs native Ice Cream Sandwich, and is available in two versions — one supports IP content and local storage exclusively, while a second can also accept terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) programming, letting you play back live TV shows in addition to content from a local server, pulled from the web or stored on attached media or an inserted microSD card. It connects to the web using Ethernet or WiFi, and includes USB ports on both the front and the rear, Bluetooth, HDMI out, digital audio out and a standard-definition connection. It’s also paired with a QWERTY keyboard-equipped remote manufactured by Philips with gyroscopic or directional-pad curser control, along with pinch/zoom gesture capability.

We had a chance to check out the ICS box at EchoStar’s IBC booth today, where the device was running Android 4.0.4 and an early version of the company’s hybrid app, which groups “favorited” content alongside terrestrial channels, letting you use the standard channel up/down button to navigate through stored TV shows, IP content or live programming quite seamlessly, as if all of the media was playing from the same source. It’s clearly not yet ready for primetime, but the interface was sleek and speedy — the set-top box performed very well overall. EchoStar reps were unable to confirm whether or not the HDX-410 would be coming to market at all, but they did add that the solution may be made available to third-parties in the future. Click past the break to take a closer look in our hands-on video.
