LG G3 Photo Confirms 2560×1440 Resolution [Exclusive]

LG G3 Photo Confirms 2560x1440 Resolution [Exclusive]We’re not yet in that crazy pre-launch rumor phase with the upcoming LG G3 phone, but things may start to heat up now: we have obtained a photo from a source that has proven reliable in the past, and we are 99.99% sure that this is indeed a photo of the LG G2 successor.

Given that the GPU is a Qualcomm Adreno 330, I would assume that the main processor aka SoC is the Snapdragon 801 since there’s no reason to use a Snapdragon 800 at this point in time. They are both pin-compatible and the 801 is designed to be a drop-in replacement.

The most interesting information that Snapdragon 801 is giving us is the timeframe. Because Snapdragon 805 should be available for Q3/Q4 handsets, the G3 should come out before Sep/Oct. The June 2014 G3 launch rumor seems believable.

Note: Antutu is apparently not displaying the proper DPI information. A previous version of this post referenced 640 dpi, but it wouldn’t quite match a 5.2″ – 5.5″ display, which is the most probable size for the G3.

The most pertinent information here is the 2560×1440 screen, which is totally insane by today’s smartphone standards. We have reached out to LG, and they have confirmed that their next product will indeed have a 2560×1440 display (2K). However, that’s all the information that the company is willing to comment about at this point.

If you thought that the 6.1″ 2560×1600, 498DPI IGZO display from Sharp was impressive, LG is productizing this first, which is not a complete surprise since LG showed a prototype to the world last year.

The bezel seems a hair thicker than it is on the LG G2, but without a complete picture and the actual screen size (which is possibly between 5.2” and 5.5”), it’s difficult to reach any conclusion.

Previous rumors called the LG G3 LS990 and did mention the 2560×1440 resolution along with the Snapdragon 801 chip, both of which would be confirmed by this photo, and that seems to put the Mediatek octo-core rumor at odds. Since LG and Qualcomm have been working very closely, and since LG seems to put most of its software efforts in improving the apps, I doubt that the Mediatek rumor is true – we’ll see.

The internal storage of 32GB would make sense, but isn’t confirmed yet. The LG user interface is also said to have been modified in favor of a “flat” design, but this photo doesn’t help us confirm that either. If you are curious, the LG G3 interface is supposed to look like this.

Kolibree First Electrical Connected Toothbrush on Kickstarter

Kolibree First Electrical Connected Toothbrush on Kickstarter
The Kolibree electrical connected toothbrush got a lot of traction at CES and today, the company launched its Kickstarter campaign with pre-orders available to the public.

The device features Bluetooth connectivity, sonic technology, an 8-axis accelerometer, a magnetometer, and a gyroscope. The companion application will show people how to brush their teeth more efficiently and will record their brushing sessions to show their progress in a user-friendly mobile dashboard.

Kolibree is also providing an API that will allow developers to create compelling games to motivate kids (and adults) to brush their teeth better, and turn a chore into a fun experience. See below two screenshots of future games, please note that we did not see any gaming demo.

Similar products have been spotted recently, such as the Oral-B electrical connected brush developed by giant Procter & Gamble, however the device I saw at MWC does not feature the same 3 sensors except for a pressure sensor, and no word was shared on the future plan to build a gaming ecosystem. Most recently, I met with Grush co-founder who showed me a prototype of a non-electrical connected toothbrush with an early stage demo of 3D games. Grush will be available for pre-order in 2015.

On Kickstarters the first 500 funders will be offered a Kolibree toothbrush for only $99, with a price point of $129 for the next 1,000 supporters. For only $149,  backers will be able to choose from a rnage fo nice colors: Feather White, Dove Gray, Berry Blue or Cerise Pink.

The development kit is available for $199 with beta access to API. The dentists can buy an educational software package for $299.

Grush, Connected Toothbrush with Games

Grush, Connected Toothbrush with Games
Another day, another connected toothbrush… the Grush one is slightly different from Kolibree, the first electrical connected toothbrush, because it will feature a few games at launch and it is not electrical. Note that the Kolibree team talked about adding games in the future but we have not seen one yet. For now, Grush is merely an early stage prototype that has been developed by cofounders Ethan Daniel Schur and Dr. Yong-Jing Wang.

Loopd, Hyper-Local Communication and Social CRM iPhone App

Using a proprietary version of multi-peer Bluetooth, the Loopd iOs application allows users to search and connect with contacts within a few feet without using a GPS. As the example described in the video (see above), you can see who you know at a party and start a chat session on the spot, to find in which room your contact is. This could be very useful during large tech conferences, such as CES or MWC where unplanned meetings based on “real-time proximity” would be more efficient than scheduling meetings far away apart.

Loopd is launching the IOS app today and plans to unveil its wearable tech component in June.  From my email conversation with CEO Brian Friedman, I learned that the upcoming loopd bracelet will use gesture to let people exchange their contact info with a simple handshake. I cannot wait to see and try this cool gadget!

NVIDIA GTX Titan Z Has 5760 Cores

NVIDIA GTX Titan Z Has 5760 CoresNVIDIA just announced a new monster graphics card: the Titan Z. It is a dual GPU Titan card that features 5760 cores, 12GB of memory and generates 8 TeraFLOPS of compute power – for $2999. That rounds the cost of each core to about 50 cents. This is rather excellent if you happen to be shopping for a supercomputer that you don’t need to build, and that can be used without special power requirements. (more…)

    NVIDIA Pascal Architecture Introduced

NVIDIA Pascal Architecture IntroducedAt the GTC conference in San Jose, NVIDIA has officially introduced its next-generation architecture called Pascal (after scientist Blaise Pascal). Although it is “a couple of years away”, NVIDIA talked about a few new fundamental architecture changes that will take Pascal to the next level, when compared to its latest Maxell GPU architecture which was just launched recently on desktop and laptops.

If you remember, something very similar named Volta was talked about last year. NVIDIA has confirmed to us that Pascal is NOT a replacement for Volta. Instead, Pascal has been introduced between Maxwell and Volta as NVIDIA saw an opportunity to introduce an intermediate architecture that was significant enough to justify its development.  (more…)

    HTC One M8: Hands-On Preview

HTC One M8: Hands On PreviewThe best HTC smartphone ever just got a successor. The all new HTC One (aka HTC One M8) has been officially, and it will replace the HTC One M7 which came out just a year ago. There were quite a few leaks ahead of this launch, and many of them were spot on, but when I saw the HTC One M8 for myself, I though that none of the leaked photos did justice to the actual design and build quality of this handset. Now that it is out, you may want to check it out for yourself because if you thought that the original HTC One shined with its industrial design, the M8 takes it to the next level. Let’s take a closer look.

    DirectX 12: A Rather Awesome Software-Only Evolution

DirectX 12: A Rather Awesome Software Only EvolutionMicrosoft has just finished presenting its preview of DirectX 12 (Direct3D 12 in particular), their newest graphics API (Application Programming Interface) which lets game developers control graphics processing units (GPUs) in games and other graphics applications. Although DirectX has been an excellent graphics API since DirectX 8, Microsoft’s DirectX 12 is going to address long-standing issues that were carried out until DirectX 11. As a result, developers will get the level of control that they are asking for and DirectX 12 is going to make much better use of both the main processor (CPU) and GPUs available in the system. From a developer’s point of view, this brings “console-like” control and efficiency, but wrapped in a standard API. (more…)

Samsung NX mini Camera, Now Official

Samsung NX mini Camera, Now OfficialThe leaks were true, and the Samsung NX camera has been made official by Samsung. It is an extremely compact camera that features a very thin design (22mm, lens excluded) and a very light body weight of 196g (with battery) which is equivalent to a large smartphone. Of course, additional weight will be added up by one of the three special NX-M lenses available: a 9mm f3.5, 9-27mm f3.5-f5.6 OIS and 17mm f1.8 OIS. Obviously, I’m mainly interested by that last one because I’m all about low-light photography. (more…)
