Samsung Series 5 and Series 7 Slate PCs, hands-on!

Ahead of Windows 8′s arrival on October 26, Samsung is launching a couple of Slate PCs with their Series 5 and Series 7 naming. Both slates have been designed to turn from laptop to tablet, thanks to their detachable display and QWERTY dock. In the Android world, this would be something like the Asus Transformer Series. These two tablets are powered by an Intel processor, so they run the desktop version of Windows 8.

Because of that, these tablets can truly run any Windows program, past or future, and that should be most important to those who have legacy or enterprise applications that they can’t live without. There is definitely a market for that. (more…)

Bing integrates Quora to social sidebar

Microsoft has just announced that the Bing website is now integrating Quora in the social side bar. The idea -says Bing- is that the Microsoft search engine not only want to show pertinent search results, but also who provides relevant answers. Although there are relevant answers elsewhere (forums, Q&A sites…), this is a potentially huge win for Quora, where most users log-in via Facebook with their real identity. U.S based users should start seeing Quora contributors in the sidebar, today. (more…)

Archos 101 XS ultra-thin Android tablet and keyboard dock

Archos has just launched its Archo Gen10 XS Android tablet line, which is spearheaded by the Archos 101 XS. As its name indicates, it is a 10.1″ Android tablet running on Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.23), and the main differentiation point is its ultra-thin design, keyboard dock (included in the base model) and relatively fast graphics processor.

The Archos 101XS goes after a market similar to the ASUS TF300, but in a slightly different way. As a standalone device, the tablet is very thin and that can be felt immediately when holding it. The keyboard has a unique design that does not rely on a hinge, but on magnets to keep the keyboard and tablet together in the “closed” position.

OnLive to continue operations under new management [official]

OnLive controllerOnLive has changed a lot since last Friday when the company was “restructured” into a new company according to a recent official announcement. To do so, all the assets of OnLive Inc were sold to the new company. The good news for customers is that Lauder Partners is injecting enough money to allow OnLive to continue its service without any interruption.

After laying off half of its employees, the company says that the new legal entity will re-hire many of them at the same position/salary, although not everyone seems to be coming back. Employees who are not asked to re-join will be given an opportunity to “consult” with the new company.

According to the official statement, this was a necessary step for OnLive although a “heartbreaking” transition. The company has issues a FAQ that addresses many questions people may have. My understanding is that the shares of the former OnLive Inc company did not retain any value during the transition. We’ve pasted the whole statement and Q&A in the full post. (more…)

Anonymous claims PSN breach, 10M accounts allegedly accessed

Uh-oh, the Anonymous hacker group has claimed to have hacked the PlayStation Network, or PSN, and downloaded 50GB worth of database that contain user accounts and passwords. From the look of it, a lot of emails are from Sweden, Russia and other European countries. It’s not clear if U.S user information was on the server that was breached, but this does not sound good.

At the moment, Sony has not commented yet, and they are without a doubt looking into the matter. As for users, they were pretty angry because the last time PSN was breached, there quite a lot of downtime and all of this was extremely inconvenient for players.

If you want to see if your email has been exposed, the hackers have uploaded the information to http://pastebin.com/HUjZPaF3 In the meantime, it is clear that spammers are having a field day, so you can expect to see a wave of spam/fishing following shortly. The Jebberish on the left side represent the encrypted usernames and passwords. Depending on how it was encrypted, it may or may not take a while to decrypt. Let’s hope that Sony used some sort of unique key per user.

Update 1:08pm PT: Sony has contacted Ubergizmo with this statement:

“We’ve confirmed that the recent claim that PlayStation Network was illegally hacked and that customer passwords and email addresses were accessed is completely false.”  (a Sony representative)

Nokia Windows Phone Event on Sept 5 = Windows Phone 8!

We have received an invitation to a Nokia event help in NYC on September 5. Without a doubt, this is about the next-generation Lumia which runs on Windows Phone 8, which was revealed in San Francisco earlier this year (catch up with the Windows Phone 8 reveal).

This is going to kick start a new phase for both Microsoft and Nokia who will now be able to come up with high-end smartphones featuring the latest quad-core chips, along with edgy cameras and a new Windows Phone that finally shares its code base with Windows 8.

Microsoft gets a chance to make a great first impression by showing how Windows Phone 8 works on a real product and how a “special” partner like Nokia benefits from this relationship. For Nokia, this is a critical launch that could set the tone for its earnings for the next 12-18 months. Come back on September 5 to learn what Nokia and Microsoft will reveal. There are exciting times.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 launches in the USA + Hands-On

Samsung has just launched the Galaxy Note 10.1 in the USA. You may have seen its international launch last week, and by now you are probably familiar with the overall hardware specs (quad-core, 2GB, front speaker ect…), but with this launch, we finally get the official pricing of the Galaxy Note 10.1: $499 for the 16GB version and $599 for the 32GB one. Both devices can accept a microSD card of up to 64GB in addition to the 16GB or 32GB of internal storage. Samsung has also confirmed that the Note 10.1 will be upgraded to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) the year’s end.

The pricing suggests that Samsung considers this to be their high-end tablet, and the company has promised a copious advertising campaign to make the public aware of this new Galaxy Note. Keep an eye open in electronics retail places as they may feature the Note 10.1 in hands-on demonstrations. Also this is a “hard launch”, so the Galaxy Note 10.1 will be in store as early as tomorrow (Aug 16th) in places like Amazon, BestBuy, Office Depot or Tiger Direct, Samsung told us.

Telenav Scout gets offline navigation

Telenav has just announced that it has added offline navigation to its Scout personal navigation application on iOS. Before going on the road, users can download regional maps that contains huge areas of the country so that they won’t have to worry about having a working data connection.

It is clear that although data connectivity has become extremely common in urban areas, there are many places where it is too slow, unreliable or simply non-existent. While it’s not dramatic when you want to update a social network status, it can be really annoying when you are trying to find your way in a new area.

Google has recently added offline navigation to Android (a free service), but Apple users don’t have an “out of the box” solution, that’s why Telenav came up with this new option for Scout. This update is called “Always There Navigation” and should be available right now, at least in the USA. Offline navigation is not a free feature, and costs $9.99/yr or $2.99 for customers who subscribe to Scout’s premium features (voice guidance, auto re-route, speed trap+camera info, advanced traffic). Official teaser video in the full post. (more…)

Freedom Pop 4G hotspot case turns iPod Touch into a near-iPhone

Freedom is coming out with a 4G case that practically turns an iPod Touch (gen 4) into an iPhone. It works by having a 4G LTE (Sprint Network, with WiMax and 3G fallback, I’m told) functionality directly in the case, which is also a WIFI hotspot. The iPod can then access the internet over the WiFi connection. Interestingly, Freedom Pop made a name for themselves by coming up with the same concept for iPhone 4/4S first. In my opinion, the iPod version adds much more value because iPods don’t have a cellular connection to start with. (more…)
