NVIDIA Miracast clones mobile devices displays to HTDVs

NVIDIA has just announced Miracast, a WiFi-Direct based protocol that allows phones, tablets and other computing devices to clone a live mobile device display to a compatible TV. This lets mobile applications being displayed effortlessly onto a big TV. Obviously, this concept has immediate applications for games, video and presentation apps.

Of course, to do this, NVIDIA needs to compress a video stream fast enough and with sufficient quality. Given what the company has done with GeForce grid (which is used by Gaikai), there is no question that it has the know-how. Additionally, the low-latency of a home network should make that a walk in the park, mostly. (more…)

SnapDragon S4 Pro Devkit Preview + Benchmarks

We’re attending a Qualcomm event in which we had the opportunity to get our hands on the quad-core SnapDragon S4 Pro (APQ8064) development platform. If you’re not familiar with the new chip, the stated goal of Qualcomm is to come up with a high-performance “all-day” mobile computing platform. To increase the speed, Qualcomm is using a quad-core architecture and a new Adreno 320 graphics processor – all in the same chip die.

The tablet itself has pretty much everything that the platform can support: stereo surround sound, multiple microphones, all the sensors that we may expect, including pressure, temperature and fingerprint reader. There is 1GB of RAM and 16GB of local storage (+ microSD slot). The development tablet has just launched and is available from BSquare, the company that usually manufacture the development kits for Qualcomm ($1299). Although this is a quality product, it is not meant as a “sexy” consumer device – it’s really a hardware that is meant to mostly sit on a developer desk, so don’t assume that actual products will look like this.

Pearltrees for iPhone

I have written about Pearltrees since the web application was in private beta back in April 2009, before the official launch in late 2009. To date, the free service counts more than 500,000 contributors and more than 25 million pearls.

Although I am not an avid user, however I love its aesthetics and the ease of use of its graphic interface. Content curation is a trending topic in the internet industry and Pearltrees is surely one of the most innovative startup to offer content curation and social networking based on the interest graph.

Today, Pearltrees launched its iPhone application nine months after the release of the iPad version.
All versions allow users to organize content found on the web in pearltrees, and each pearl is in fact a web page. The iPad version introduced the ability to discover new pearls and pearltrees with a touch interface, making them appear while swiping the screen. When in discovery mode, the new pearls that show up next to the ones you just swiped relate to similar topics, you literally browse your “interest graph” or “interest tree”.

Metal Gear Solid Rising Official Gameplay Footage

Konami just released the official Metal Gear Solid Rising gameplay footage that explains how the controls work and what the player can do. If you’ve been following E3 for the past couple of years, you probably know that Metal Gear Solid Rising (MGS Rising) features a 3D-engine that allows the player to cut any target objects in a realistic way. This is typically very difficult as most polygonal objects in games are normally solid and hollow. Konami did a great job with this.

On the surface, the game itself is a fancy beat-them-up not unlike God of War, Heavenly Sword and other titles of that sort, except that MGS Rising features its own fancy combo hits and finish. Raiden, the main character from Metal Gear Solid 2, was a little boo-booed when he popped into the series (well, it’s just hard to replace Solid Snake…) but this may be the title that will make him enter the video game Hall of Fame. What do you think? Is Konami’s Raiden character ready for a main role?

New Battlefield 3 Armored Kill video shows the largest Battlefield map ever [Video]

Electronic Arts has just released new gameplay footage from Battlefield 3 Armored Kill, an expansion pack for Battlefield 3 which brings new vehicles, gameplay, in-game content and operational theaters. Because the emphasis is on armored vehicle warfare, 5 new vehicles have been added : new tanks, mobile artillery, etc… From the trailer, it looks like players can fight back using air power with the heavily armed Spectre Gunship.

The size of the maps is really impressive, and it makes sense that they are so huge: unlike the classic FPS where players face each other with guns, every vehicles drive or flies relatively fast. On the other hand, a lot of the landscape is computer generated, so the amount of work for the design team is not proportional to the size of the map. This is yet another impressive gameplay powered by the Frostbyte 2 engine.

EyeTap director allegedly assaulted by McDonald employees for wearing digital eye glass

Steve Mann, an engineering professor at the University of Toronto and inventor of the EyeTap computer vision system, was allegedly physically assaulted at a McDonald’s branch in Paris after employees spotted him wearing the device. According to Mann, during a month-long summer vacation with his family in Paris, France, they happen to drop by at a McDonald’s chain in 140, Avenue Champs Elysees. PlanetSide 2 Official Trailer

Sony Online Entertainment has just released the official trailer of PlanetSide 2. If you are not familiar with the game, PlanetSide is a massively multiplayer online game that was released in 2003. The game happens on a planet called Auraxis where three factions fight for control of the land. The game itself happens in first-person view and combines FPS action elements with high-level strategy as well, although most people may simply perceive it as an online FPS. Hundreds of players can be on the battlefield at the same time.

Obviously, PlanetSide 2 is a sequel, and this is part of the early unveil that SOE has put out. The game looks better (to be clear: this movie is not rendered with the game engine), and there’s a new storyline written by author Marv Wolfman.

Intel Series 330 SSD reaches 240GB and dips below $1/GB

Intel has just announced that it is introducing a new 240GB version of its Series 330 solid state drive (SDD). At the same time, the company is lowering the maximum suggested price (MRSP) on previous models in the 330 Series, but also the 520 Series and 320 Series.

The new Series 330 240GB will come at $194 MRSP, but we’ll have to see if online prices get lower than this. With this offering, Intel breaks the $1/GB barrier, just like the industry predicted last year, and we expect pretty much every SSD manufacturer to get there by year’s end.

The good news is that this is not over. Moore’s law dictates that prices will continue to plunge, while capacity rises. In the meantime, expect more and more computers to use SSD drives to accelerate file access and as it stands, this is still one of the best upgrade that a computer can get. Don’t miss our Intel SSD 320 Series review.

PolyCom RealPresence Mobile 1.3 Lets Users Control the Camera

Video conferencing accessible from any devices including TVs is a trendy feature nowadays.  We have published about Polycom, one of the leading providers of enterprise video conferencing services, when it launched it mobile solution, RealPresence Mobile, last October.

Today, RealPresence Mobile 1.3 launched and it gets a very interesting new feature for iOS: the ability for users on the other end to control the camera during a video conferencing session. This is particularly useful for medical applications: a doctor can zoom in the video to better see a patient (see photo). Orlando Health, a provider of healthcare services in central Florida, is providing RealPresence Mobile to its neurology clinicians to help them remotely connect with patients – we will update this article with a video related to the use of RealPresence Mobile by Orlando Health.

Amazon GameCircle Gives Developers Access to Amazon Customers and New APIs

Amazon just launched GameCircle, a new service for game developers that gives some social abilities to games via leaderboards which keep tabs with everyone’s scores and makes things a little more competitive. On an individual basis, GameCircle will also track players accomplishments to keep them engaged with the game so they come back and play… one more time.

Finally, it introduces a sync mechanism so that games can synchronize the current state of the game onto the Amazon cloud to allow players to continue playing from exactly where they were at but on another device. For example, you could imagine playing a game comfortably from a tablet at home and continue on the go on a smartphone.

With this offering, pretty much any player who has an Amazon account can get started in seconds, but it will be interesting to see if Amazon can outperform the competition like Apple, Zynga and others who offer competing services. None of them are quite truly alike, but developers still have a choice to make. So far, Amazon has convinced a few partners to join, but it will take a few months to see if more jump on board. Developers can sign up here.
