To say that the Chocolate was a hit for LG would be similar to saying the PlayStation 2 went over well for Sony. Indeed, the outfit’s best selling handset ever (21 million units worldwide) holds a special place in the hearts of suits and shareholders alike, so it’s hardly a shock to see the company issuing a next-generation version of the device. Slated to fall into LG’s Black Label series, the phone — which is simply dubbed the ‘second generation LG Chocolate’ for now — will be fully unveiled in August, with bits and pieces to be strategically dropped during the run-up. The only real hint at features that we’re given is the following: “The new LG Chocolate will be a disruptive force in conventional mobile screens in an effort to maximize usability while inheriting the original minimalist-inspired style and iconic design of its predecessor.” Haptics? OLED? A portal into the future? Only time will tell.

Update: The typically reliable Tweakers.net has come through with a few more details, namely that this here phone will become the first of its kind with a 21:9 aspect ratio display (much like Philips’ 56-inch Cinema HDTV). We’re also told that the model number will be BL-40, the screen resolution will be pegged at 800 x 345, the display itself will be over 3-inches diagonally, the inbuilt camera will be 5 megapixels and HSDPA will be included. Now, if only we knew how the UI would handle…

It’s official, Palm just kicked out a press release saying that the UK, Ireland, and Germany will have access to the Palm Pre exclusively on O2 while Spain’s Pre will be offered exclusively on Movistar — so it’s all Telefonica, all the time. Unfortunately, launch timing was only narrowed down to “in time for the holidays” which is just another way of repeating Palm’s European-launch mantra of before the end of the year. Palm also doesn’t provide any prices and chose not to list the radio frequencies for the HSDPA/UMTS with EDGE/GSM version of the Pre. See the 1,260 word press release posted after the break that says almost nothing.

Update: Seems as if O2 Germany has word that it’ll be launching the GSM Pre in October.

Update 2: Hmm, seems as if O2 Germany has swapped out banners to show “Fall” availability. Make up your mind, won’t you?

Sure, the Japanese press release translates to “internet book,” but there’s no mistaking that 10.1-inch screen and 1.6GHz Atom running Windows XP on 1GB of RAM: Sony’s new VAIO W is a netbook, folks. We’re not sure how or why the company decided to enter this market after six months of hawking the overpriced VAIO P and insisting that netbooks were a “race to the bottom,” but we’re itching to see what the US price tag on this guy is — with a nicer-than-usual 1366 x 768 screen, what we’re hoping is a typically-solid VAIO keyboard, and some sort of home media-streaming software called VAIO Media Plus, the W could be a big winner if it’s not crazy-expensive. Fingers crossed! Video after the break.

Update: We just watched the video — kind of an ugly little bastard, innit? ASUS and Acer are way beyond this chunky design language now, and honestly, we expect way more from Sony.

Update 2: Reuters is reporting a Japanese price of ¥60,000 or about $629.

So much for exclusivity, eh? Sprint is staying toe-to-toe with Verizon in the race to get the BlackBerry Tour to market, launching the consensus hottest RIM device to date on July 12 for $199.99 on contract after rebates. It’s awfully refreshing to see an ominous statement like “later this summer” morph into “early summer” instead of slipping into the “dead of winter” as is all too often the case with hotly-anticipated phones, and we have a sneaking suspicion the Tour’s gonna sell like a remastered Bonnie Tyler live album (that’s a good thing, by the way). Who’s in?

It’s true, The Pirate Bay has agreed to being purchased by Global Gaming Factory (owner of a network of Internet cafes and gaming centers) for 60 million Swedish Krona or roughly $7.8 million. According to a press release, “GGF intends to launch new business models that allow compensation to the content providers and copyright owners.” In a post on TPB’s blog, the rogue file sharing site says that the project has been in the works for many years and should help evolve the site while trying to stay the same. Here’s how they put it:

If the new owners will screw around with the site, nobody will keep using it. That’s the biggest insurance one can have that the site will be run in the way that we all want to. And – you can now not only share files but shares with people. Everybody can indeed be the owner of The Pirate Bay now. That’s awesome and will take the heat of us.

We’ll have to wait and see how this pans out but it certainly smacks of a Napster v2 like situation at first blush. Assuming of course the deal closes by August as anticipated.

Update: As a hint, perhaps, of what’s to come, GGF also announced the purchase of Peerialism, a software company responsible for developing what GGF calls “P2P 2.0” file sharing technology.
