Funai wins order blocking Vizio imports, Vizio maintains business as usual

Just when it looked like the long-running patent dispute was tipping Vizio’s way, the U.S. International Trade Commission has ruled in favor of Funai, issuing an order to block imports of Vizio HDTVs. According to Bloomberg the ban is still eligible to be reviewed by President Obama while the patent case itself is still being reviewed by an appeals court, but if Vizio wants to keep its shipments flowing it will have to post a bond of $2.50 per television. We’ve put a call in to Vizio to find out what this means for its immediate future — and that sweet LED backlit display from CES — and confirmed that while this order goes into effect immediately, you should still be able to find sets on shelves and they will continue to do business as usual during the presidential review period, but feel free to read its press release in response after the break for more details.

New Laptop Hunters ad proves Macs are just for children

Microsoft’s latest installment in its popular series of ripped-from-the-headlines, “real America” style ‘puter-buying adventures follows a mom and son duo — Lisa and Jackson. We learn during the commercial that the two need a computer which is “fast” because they need to “look up stuff” before they “get to baseball.” Luckily for them, there are plenty of great PC options for their under-$1500 budget. Sure, they veer off in the middle there, almost buying a Mac — which Lisa notes are “popular at this age” (we guess what she meant to say is that they’re for children). Regardless, they’re both so turned off by the cute-but-small computers that they hurry back to the affordable VAIO section and make off with a sweet 16-incher. But hey, don’t take our word for it — check out the really real mother and son for yourself in the full video after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Leaked pics of the CrunchPad make it look dangerously close to availability

Thanks to a slip of the fingers on Posterous (and Robert Scoble’s serious Twitter addiction), new images of Michael Arrington’s pet Internet-tablet project — the CrunchPad — have shown up looking very, very close to a finished product. As you can see in the gallery below, the (supposedly) $200, WiFi enabled pad has gotten dressed up in multiple colors and been shoved into some fairly handsome looking packaging. There’s no telling if this means the device is any closer to a buy-able reality, but one thing is for sure: a microblog is no place for secrets.

T-Mobile announces April 21st “private launch event” in NYC

Well well well. Well. What do we have here? Apparently the cats and kittens over at T-Mobile have something special planned on Tuesday, April 21st. We’ve just gotten a very brief email letting us know that something was going down, but without any other detail. Obviously our gadget-alarms started clanging, and the way we see it we’ve only got a few things to get excited about. Will we see the launch of Cupcake? Could this be the official US unveiling of the Magic? Or perhaps we’ll finally get to see the new Sidekick which just hit the FCC. Look — anything is possible, but whatever happens, we’ll be there. What do you guys think is in store?

New Sidekick hits FCC with T-Mobile 3G

Occasionally, Sharp will pass a Japanese domestic market handset through the FCC for global roaming certification, but not this time. No, instead, we’re seeing the PV300 — and as any rabid Sidekick fan knows, Sharp’s Sidekicks are referred to as “PV” followed by a three-digit number internally, so yeah, we’re thinking this is probably the real deal. Of course, we’ve had no shortage of legit-sounding rumors in the past few months that there’s a new high-end Sidekick on the way to T-Mobile shelves, and indeed, it should come as no surprise that this one is certified for AWS 3G — the very kind T-Mobile uses — along with the usual assortment of GSM / EDGE bands. Anyhow, see you shortly, dear Sidekick. Hopefully.

Acer announces Aspire Timeline thin’n’lights — $699 to $899

Acer’s announcing a ton of new gear right now (we’re live at the event in a New Jersey IMAX theater, of all places) and the hottest new products so far are the new Aspire Timeline laptops. Hard specs are a little light at the moment, but what we do know sounds pretty great: 13.3, 14.1 and 15.6-inch LED-backlit 16:9 screens in a one-inch thick chassis, Intel ULV processors, multitouch touchpads, HDMI and S/PDIF out, and eight hours of battery life — 10 hours with an SSD. The real killer is pricing, however: $699 to $899. Ouch — poor Adamo. We’re still at the event, but we’ll be trying to get as much info on these as we can, stay tuned.

Update: We got some more detailed specs, and things are still looking good — like, built-in WiMAX good. The processors will be ULV Core 2 Duos, and the 13.3-inch model will weigh 3.5 pounds while the 15.6-incher will tip in at 5.3 pounds. RAM is DDR3 and drives top out at 500GB spinners and 64GB SSD. We’re angling for clock speeds, we’ll let you know when we go hands-on

iTunes Store now infected with variable pricing, Amazon still $0.99

As promised, variable pricing has now been implemented at the iTunes music store. Already, we’re seeing most of the top 10 singles and 33 of the top 100 hitting the top price-point of $1.29 (encoded as DRM-free 256kbps AAC). Interesting as Amazon’s uncomfortably similar top 10 list has all these tracks priced at $0.99 (encoded as DRM-free 256kbps VBR MP3). A handful of tracks (nine in the top 100) do hit the higher $1.29 price further down Amazon’s list. Now, if you believe Steve (someone who originally postured against this price structure), then it appears that the music labels are charging Apple more for the rights to sell its music than Amazon based on this quote attributed to Jobs in the Apple press release from January:

in April, based on what the music labels charge Apple, songs on iTunes will be available at one of three price points-69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29-with many more songs priced at 69 cents than $1.29.

Regardless, we know where we’ll be purchasing our Miley Cyrus from now on.

[Thanks, Jesse]

GM and Segway’s P.U.M.A. unveiled and no, this isn’t a joke

GM and Segway’s joint venture is probably best described as a rickshaw without all the charm. The self-balancing Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility Project (P.U.M.A.) can reach top speeds of 35 MPH, has a lithium battery that lasts up to 35 miles with a single charge, and features vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication for potentially reducing the number of accidents. No word on when or if this’ll actually go into production but it’s expected to be priced at just 25% that of a regular automobile. Hit up the read link for more pics, including a concept model that’s just a teensy bit more reasonable. We’ll be at the launch event tomorrow to see it for ourselves and make sure it’s not all some bizarre dream.

Nikon readies entry-level DSLR with articulating display for April 14th launch? (updated with spyshots!)

Word on the prismatic, hinged mirror streets of camera-land suggest that NIkon is preparing to launch “new products” for Spring. Rightful speculation made after a press invite was purportedly sent to a variety of photog publications announcing an April 14th launch event. Expectations vary widely as to what will be announced including a new entry-level D60-followup with 720p video on up to a D400 with 16 megapixel Sony CMOS. We even have the dubious photo above showing a Nikon with articulating display taken by a jockey riding a humor forum who claims to have been traveling “somewhere in Eastern Europe and stumbled across a commercial shoot for Nikon.” Sure, that’s believable. Fortunately, we’re just over a week away from knowing for sure.

Update: Well, well, what’s this… we just received a big batch of spy shots that look authentic enough and clearly show what looks like a low-end Nikon with articulating display.

Update 2: We just received a few more pictures as well as the detailed backstory to this Nikon with swiveling display (a first for Nikon). Seems Kevin, a film student, was smitten by the Arriflex 235 435 motion picture camera used to film the commercial in Dubrovnik, Croatia yesterday. It wasn’t until later, when he was reviewing the pics from the day, that he realized “that the subject of the commercial was the yet to be announced Nikon 500(0?).” Looks like a legit and incredibly fortunate find to us.

[Thanks, Kevin]

NYT: T-Mobile to release Android-powered home phone, tablet PC next year

According to documents obtained by the New York Times, T-Mobile’s set to release a home phone early next year, and a tablet PC after that, both of which are said to be powered by Android. We’re a bit light on details, but we do know the phone itself has a docking station and will come with another device for synchronization. That device’s supposed resemble a small, keyboard-less laptop with a 7-inch touchscreen and could check the mail and manage data for devices across the house. Here’s hoping T-Mo’s been taking notes watching its AT&T HomeManager / Verizon Hub predecessors.
