Broadcom has just announced the addition of WiFi-Direct into the WICED platform. This is a critical step since many devices that would be considered part of “the Internet of things” are in fact at home, or at a fixed-location where WiFi is available. Bluetooth (BT) simply doesn’t offer the bandwidth that WiFi is capable of, and it can frankly be painful to pair BT devices together. fortunately, NFC has made this much better as of late. WICED now supports all major wireless protocols, with the exception of 3G/4G since that is not really battery-life friendly. (more…)

    Broadcom adds WiFi Direct to its embedded device platform, furthers our internet-of-things future

    Broadcom, wireless. Peanut butter, jelly. Together, they just work. So today’s announcement that the company is adding WiFi Direct to its WICED (Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices) platform feels pretty natural. The firm believes that WICED Direct will allow OEMs to develop wearable sensors — pedometers, heart-rate monitors, keycards — and clothing that transmit everyday data to the cloud via a connected smartphone or tablet. This would help push along the internet of things movement that’s been bandied about so much recently, and maybe even ensure you aren’t locked out of the house again.

    Nexus 7 factory image and binaries now available from Google

    Wanna mod that shiny new Nexus 7? Today’s your lucky day. Google just posted the factory image and binaries for its second generation 7-inch tablet — also known by the product name “razor” and device name “flo”. The factory image lets you restore your new Nexus 7 to the exact software it shipped with in case you grow tired of that custom ROM you cooked up using the binaries (natch). Speaking of which, the packages include drivers for audio and sensors from ASUS, NFC from Broadcom plus graphics and everything-but-the-kitchen-sink from Qualcomm. This comes mere hours after some open source drama surrounding the binaries (which now appears to be resolved) and with plenty of time to spare for UK customers.     Broadcom announces quadcore HSPA chipset destined for budget Android phones

    Broadcom is no stranger to the budget-friendly lineup for carriers and OEMs around the globe — especially in emerging markets — but quad-core chipsets are just gaining traction in this arena. Granted, companies like MediaTek have already begun cranking out low-cost four-core Cortex-A7 SoCs for markets like China and India, but a little friendly competition doesn’t hurt anyone, right? This is the case with the BCM23550, a 1.2GHz A7 quad-core processor capable of HSPA+ speeds up to 21Mbps down and 5Mbps up and is optimized to run on Android 4.2 devices. The new piece of silicon also supports HD Voice and 12MP cameras with H.264 1080p video capture and playback, and offers the usual litany of connectivity options such as NFC, Bluetooth, 5G WiFi, RFID and GPS. It even features dual HD (720p) display support which is compatible with Miracast. Lastly, it’s also pin-to-pin compatible with Broadcom’s dual-core BCM21664T, which means manufacturers already using that particular chipset can reduce the amount of time spent on R&D and handset design. If you’re curious, expect the chips to begin production in early Q3, right around the corner.

    iFixit tears down 2013 MacBook Air, finds bigger battery and smaller SSD

    iFixit has a tradition of tearing apart Apple gadgets (and many others) as soon as they’re on sale, and it’s maintaining that custom with a fresh peek at the 2013 edition of the 13-inch MacBook Air. This isn’t a repeat of last year’s by-the-book affair, however — there’s a few minor surprises in store. We now know that Apple is bolstering the efficiency of Intel’s Haswell chips with a larger 7,150mAh battery pack, and that Broadcom makes the 802.11ac WiFi chip. The solid-state drive inside also represents a major rethink: while we’ve heard that Apple has switched the drive’s interface from pokey SATA to PCI Express, we can see that the SSD itself has shrunk dramatically since 2012. iFixit is still down on the Air’s repairability and scores it four out of ten, but those who’ve wanted to answer a few of Apple’s more recent riddles will still want to check out the full examination at the source.

    Broadcom intros a trio of 802.11ac WiFi chips for PCs and set-top boxes

    Broadcom has focused most of its 802.11ac WiFi efforts this year on high- and low-end mobile chips. Today, it’s swinging that attention back to bigger machinery like PCs and set-top boxes. The company’s new BCM4350, BCM43556 and BCM43558 all carry more robust, 2 X 2 MIMO antennas that help them hit 866Mbps speeds and optimize traffic through beamforming. Any differences, Broadcom notes, revolve around everything but the WiFi. The BCM4350 carries a more PC-like set of interfaces that includes Bluetooth 4.0, PCI Express and SDIO 3.0; the BCM43558 drops the PCIe and SDIO in favor of USB 3.0, while the BCM43556 also sheds Bluetooth. Although we don’t know which companies plan to use the nimbler wireless technology, it should ship to gadget makers in the second half of this year.

    Broadcom introduces low-power WiFi and Bluetooth chips for the Internet of things

    The Internet of things — that nebulous term usually associated with interconnecting everyday objects in a meaningful way — is in the news again. Yesterday, Broadcom announced that it’s launching a couple cost-effective, power-efficient wireless chips geared towards appliances, home automation and wearable devices. The first SoC, BCM4390, incorporates a highly-efficient WiFi radio for embedded use in products such as weight scales, thermostats and security cameras. It fits into the company’s range of Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED) chips. The second SoC, BCM20732, features an ultra low-power Bluetooth transceiver and targets devices like heart rate monitors, pedometers and door locks. Broadcom’s also contributing its Bluetooth software stack to the Android Open Source Project with support for both standard and Bluetooth Smart hardware.     As we’ve mentioned before, 5G WiFi, aka 802.11ac is a good thing, unless you hate speed and range. After launching its integrated BCM4335 chip on flagship handsets like Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 and the HTC One, Broadcom has announced new 5G WiFi combo chips for lower-end smartphones, PCs, notebooks and tablets. Budget handheld devices can now be equipped with the BCM4339, which Broadcom says brings the same performance as its top-end mobile chip while integrating power and low-noise amplifiers for easier integration. Meanwhile, the BCM43162 is targeted at desktop and notebook PCs with direct support for the Microsoft’s Windows OS. Customers are now sampling both chips, and Broadcom expects volume production in the second half of the year — another possible reason to put off that notebook purchase a bit longer.

    Facebook’s Open Compute Project eyes accessible, scalable network switches

    Open Compute Project shifts its focus to liberating network switches

    Facebook’s two-year-old Open Compute Project is fast becoming a potential cure-all for servers, with efforts underway that tackle efficiency, storage and monolithic design. Its next target: the frequently closed-source, small-scale world of network switches. The OCP team wants networking devices as open and scalable as the servers underneath them, and it’s teaming up with heavy hitters such as Broadcom, Intel and VMware to make that happen. Unlike past initatives, though, there isn’t an obvious template to work from. When development starts at the OCP Engineering Summit on May 16th, the alliance will be starting from scratch — which suggests that we’ll be waiting a long time to see what truly flexible switches can do.

    SES demos first Ultra HD transmission in more efficient HEVC standard

    We’re still a bit away from Ultra HD becoming the standard for television. One of the things standing in the way is just how much bandwidth pushing that many pixels demands. SES recently demonstrated an Ultra HD transmission that uses the up and coming HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) standard, as opposed to the more established H.264. It’s demonstrated 4K broadcasts before, as seen above at its IBC booth last year, but those were using older codecs. The 3,840 x 2,160 image was broadcast at a data rate of 20 Mbps, roughly a 50-percent improvement in encoding efficiency over H.264-based MPEG-4. The demonstration was performed with support from SES’s partners, Harmonic and Broadcom, the latter of which provided the BCM7445-based decoding box used for pulling in the video. The tech still isn’t quite ready for prime time, but we’d say a 4K House of Cards stream is probably closer than any of us realized.
