Pixies release new single ‘Bagboy’ as BitTorrent bundle (video)

Image

Yes, there have been BitTorrent bundles from high profile artists before, but it’s still a nice surprise to see The Pixies release its first original song since 2004’s Bam Thwok on the service. If you want to be amongst the first to hear “Bagboy,” then simply download the bundle and unlock it with your email address. Those who do will then receive a complete version of the band’s 2004 Coachella set delivered straight to their inbox. For those of you who haven’t yet discovered Frank Black and his friends, the new single (plus a classic for comparison) has been tucked after the break.

Public Enemy backs BitTorrent, releases new single in a Bundle, announces remix contest for fans

Public Enemy backs BitTorrent, releases new single in a Bundle, announces remix contest for fans

BitTorrent announced its new file format, the Bundle, just over a month ago, giving artists new tools to control content distributed P2P. Now, Public Enemy is one of the first to take advantage of those features by releasing its latest single as a Bundle and announcing a BitTorrent-based remix contest. Downloading the torrent gets you a copy of “Get Up Stand Up,” and giving Chuck D and his mates your email address unlocks the Bundle — thereby netting you the song’s music video, outtakes and 37 remix-able multitracks. That last bit is key, as Public Enemy’s encouraging folks to submit remixes of the song to the group using BitTorrent SoShare. From those submissions, Public Enemy will pick the best remix, officially release it, and give the winner recording gear and a smattering of Public Enemy swag. Sound good? You bring the DJ skills, and we’ve got you covered with the source tracks and more info below.

Amazon lists multiple PlayStation 4 bundles with release day guarantee

Amazon list multiple PlayStation 4 bundles with release day guarantee

If you managed to snag one of those “Launch Edition” PS4s, consider yourself officially on the ball. If not, then not only will we not judge you, but you might actually have a different set of bragging rights. Amazon’s currently listing four new bundles for the console. The Knack and Watch Dogs editions come with their respective games included for $460, while the Battlefield 4 and Killzone launch bundles toss in one year of PlayStation Plus — nudging the price up to just 10 cents shy of $500. Perhaps of more importance, however, is that unlike the Standard listing, all the bundles carry that guarantee of release day availability, which — for gaming cred at least — is arguably priceless.

BitTorrent launches ‘Bundle’ media format with Ultra Music partnership

BitTorrent launches Bundle media format with Ultra Music partnership

The folks at BitTorrent have been busy little bees since the beginning of 2013. Between Sync, SoShare, Live and Surf you’d think the company already had enough projects to work on. Now it’s adding a new file format called Bundle to its lineup of experimental alphas and betas. The technical details are a bit thin at the moment, but we do know that it’s a torrent-based media format with tools added on top that allow for donation or email collection, among other things. The first release is part of a partnership with Ultra Music (home of artists such as David Guetta, Tiesto and deadmau5): a behind-the-scenes glimpse at Kaskade’s 2012 tour. When you download the Bundle, which is basically a teaser for an upcoming tour documentary, you’re also granted free access to the Dada Life remix of Dynasty. The rest of the content inside the file is essentially a self contained record store, with additional media you can unlock by submitting your email address. After the break you’ll find a quick video overview of the format, which sounds like it has plenty of potential. Now let’s hope BitTorrent isn’t stretching itself too thin with this latest project.

Luigi-Themed Nintendo 3DS XL Headed To Japan On July 18

Luigi Themed Nintendo 3DS XL Headed To Japan On July 18

We know after yesterday’s onslaught of Nintendo-related news due to their Nintendo Direct presentation, you’re probably filled up on Nintendo stories for the rest of the month. But this is one Nintendo-related story we just couldn’t help but pass up. Nintendo announced it would be bundling a special 3DS XL with Animal Crossing: New Leaf on June 9, but Japan seems to be getting a much cooler bundle this summer.

The 3DS XL that will be receiving the bundle treatment is completely covered in various silhouettes of everyone’s second-favorite Mario brother, Luigi. The 3DS XL will be bundled with a 4GB SD card as well as a pre-installed copy of Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, which we know Luigi will play a rather large role in. The bundle will be made available on July 18, which is when Mario and Luigi: Dream Team will be released as well. Verizon in talks to charge for TV channels based on real viewing time

Verizon in talks to charge for TV channels based on real viewing time

Few of us like paying for TV we don’t use, and there’s been attempts to fix a broken model that makes TV providers pay for channels in blocks, no matter the viewer interest. Verizon’s lead programming negotiator, Terry Denson, has told the Wall Street Journal that a more logical usage-based approach may come to FiOS TV. The telecom firm is in talks with mid-size and smaller content companies to pay for channels only based on how long we watch: Verizon would pay whenever a subscriber tunes in for at least five minutes. In theory, it’s a win-win strategy that lowers Verizon’s overhead (and hopefully ours) while rewarding the more successful smaller channels. Of course, there’s no guarantee that a deal will go through — and while Verizon will ask about a similar model when renewing major contracts, Cablevision’s battle shows how much media giants will resist disruption of a steady revenue stream.

Nintendo announces ‘mint white’ 3DS XL, Tomodachi Collection bundle for Japan

Nintendo announces 'mint white' 3DS XL, Tomodachi Collection bundle for Japan

Just in case your desire to catch them all extends to Nintendo 3DS variants, the company announced today that in Japan it’s releasing a new mint white edition of the 3DS XL (called the LL in its home country) April 18th. Priced at 18,900 yen just like the (many) others, it keeps the styling simple with a green lid and white casing. Also arriving on the same day is a special edition bundle commemorating the latest Tomodachi Collection life simulation game, priced at 22,800 yen and showing off a more distinctive splotchy look. You can get all the info straight from virtual Iwata’s news desk in the Nintendo Direct video embedded after the break while we keep an eye out for new models — like that slick transparent demo unit — crossing onto US shores this summer.

Xbox 360 250GB Spring Value bundle now available in the US for $299

Xbox 360 250GB Spring Value bundle now available in the US for $299

Sure, the next wave of gaming consoles may be arriving pretty soon, but while we wait for the PS4 and whatever Microsoft has in store for us, why not have yet another Xbox 360 bundle to choose from, right? Today the Redmond-based company released its Spring Value set, which includes that slim console with 250GB of storage space (as well as the accustomed peripherals, of course), one month gratis of Xbox Live Gold and, perhaps to make it all worthwhile, Darksiders II and Batman: Arkham City — although the latter of the two will be available via download code rather than as a physical copy. Folks that call the good ol’ US of A home can snag the fresh bundle starting today for $299, which is on par with similar bundles that Microsoft’s released in the past — granted it’s not as sleek-looking as some of the pricier ones.

Nintendo announces new ZombiU Deluxe Set Wii U bundle for $390

Nintendo announces new ZombiU Deluxe Set Wii U bundle

Bundles are inevitable with new consoles and the Wii U is naturally no exception. Nintendo has today officially announced its first such package for the console — a $389.99 set that will get you the standard Wii U Deluxe console, along with the ZombiU game, a black Wii U Pro Controller and a collectible booklet featuring artwork from the game and developer commentary. One slight difference from the launch bundles: Nintendo Land now comes as a downloadable game instead of a packed-in disc. You can look for this one to hit stores in the US and Canada on February 17th.
