The ol’ keyboard and mouse combo have proven nearly as versatile as personal computers themselves, but there are still cases when a more responsive or intuitive physical interface is needed. For example, many musicians today use MIDI controllers and sequencers. Palette aims to be that alternative interface to computers, and one that adapts to your needs.
Palette is a nearly infinitely expandable control interface. It has a power module that connects to computers via USB and control modules – buttons, knobs and sliders – that connect to the power module and to each other. Each module has two RGB LEDs that shine through its perimeter, and you’ll be able to customize the way those LEDs light up. Speaking of customization, the power module also has an OLED screen that displays the profile you’re currently using for your setup.
When it launches, Palette will support only OS X and a few programs – the Adobe Creative Suite, DJ software like Ableton and Traktor plus a few “basic web apps” – but its inventors are working on an SDK so that developers can make their programs compatible with Palette. That will be crucial to the success of this system. And if Palette does take off, we can expect more modules to come out, such as joysticks, jog dials and more. I think this has the potential to be revolutionary. It can help not just professionals but non-techies and perhaps even disable people as well.
Pledge at least $89 (CAD) (~$84 USD) on Kickstarter to get a four module Palette kit as a reward. Higher pledges get you more control modules, and there’s even a reward tier for modules with wooden cases. I’d love for Palette to be compatible with mobile devices. Imagine playing a light DJ set using only your tablet and your Palette setup, or playing Spaceteam with real controls.

Gone are the days of buttons, switches and dials. We’re all touchscreen and trackpad now. If you’re among those that miss the tactile sensation and precision that switches and toggles offer and have $100 or so burning a hole in your pocket, however, you’re right in the pitching sweet spot for Palette’s Kickstarter campaign. The module controllers daisy chain in the configuration of your choosing to create a customize hardware interface for a number of different scenarios, including gaming, creative suites and even live DJing. Palette’s also offering up a number of aesthetic choices for the controllers, including brushed aluminum and cherry wood — there’s also built in LED lighting, for those impromptu parties you’re no doubt planning. The team behind the creation is shooting for $95,012 over on the crowdfunding site. A pledge of $99 will get you the starter kit, which includes four modules. That’s set to start shipping in June.

Wish your Android phone had one more hardware button, maybe for the camera? Of course you do; hardware buttons are great. With up-and-Kickstartering gadget called Pressy, you can add one yourself at the cost of clogging one headphone jack.

While I don’t game that much on my iPhone, I have discovered that while touch-based controls might seem intuitive, but they are just awful for space shooters and other kinds of fast-paced action games. That’s one of the reasons why the WynCASE will probably work well.
The WynCASE for iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5 and iPod Touch is designed offer a better gaming experience, akin to something like the PS Vita or Nintendo 3DS. At least that’s what the designers hope for. This case has slim brushed metal buttons that don’t need any battery power.
WynLABS developed something they’re calling BridgeTOUCH technology, which makes use tiny input spots on the touchscreen itself, minimizing latency, and making it better for fast-paced games – though it does cut off a tiny bit of screen real estate.
When not in use, you can flip the WynCASE around, and use it as a protective back case for your iPhone, without blocking the rear-facing camera and flash.
The WynCASE is launching over on Kickstarter on December 11th. The project needs to amass $80,000 to get made. With left in funding and you’ll have to pledge $30 to get yours.

Google Play services arrives for Android 2.2 and above, the eager can download directly

Google recently announced to developers the availability of a new “Services” platform, to allow better integration of its core products in 3rd party apps. The update comes in the form of an APK that will automatically find its way to handsets with Android 2.2 and above. But, for the impatient amongst you, it’s available for download directly from the Play store now. This first release centers around better integration for Google+ (for account sign-in / Plus buttons etc) and providing OAuth 2.0 functionality, but it’s expected that deeper functionality with the Google universe will take root soon. Most handily, as Mountain View decided to deliver this in the form of an app / APK, there’s no pesky waiting around for networks to get it to you.
