Why People Think Friday the 13th Is Unlucky

Being wary of Friday the 13th is much more than a quaint superstition observed by a few uneducated people in distant, unreachable towns and hamlets. How Much Sunlight is There Going to Be Today? This Calendar Will Let You Know

You might not realize it yet, but the sun – or rather, the amount of sunlight you can expect for the day – plays a big part in most of your plans. Nobody wants to drive out to the beach when the sun is expected to set early, or trek a mountain while they’re losing daylight.

It’s not just a preference, because it also has impacts on people’s safety and general well-being, too. Recognizing this is graphic designer Sören Lachnit, who came up with the Circular Calendar. What the name implies is what you get. But aside from shape, his unusual calendar also includes a visualization on the amount of sunlight that will be available throughout the year.

The dates are spread out all around the sun in the middle. The closer the date is to the sun, the more sunlight there is during that period. When it’s hung on your wall, it looks more like a piece of art rather than just a calendar, so that’s definitely a plus.

The Circular Calendar were being sold for 25.99 Euros (~$35 USD) online, but unfortunately, the 2014 edition is already sold out.

Google Calendar Gets Smarter, Helps You Stay Up To Date

Google Calendar Gets Smarter, Helps You Stay Up To DateThe folks over at Google have been doing pretty well when it comes to making sure that you are able to keep track of all your appointments in a precise and concise manner, thanks to the introduction of Google Calendar for quite some time already. Needless to say, it makes perfect sense then, for the Google Calendar team to deliver updates so that it will be even more powerful and to help you make your life all the more efficient. Having said that, the new bunch of improvements have arrived just in time, especially when you consider that most of us would be experiencing a rather crazy holiday season that is set to happen in slightly more than a couple of weeks’ time.

For instance, you can now have a far more precise idea on knowing where you would go with Google Maps autocomplete, where creating events in Google Calendar would be a whole lot more speedy. Since Google Calendar will ensure that addresses get the autocomplete treatment even as you type, you would be able to save time when adding locations to your events. Apart from that, your mates can just click on the “map” link before heading out, hence arriving at the correct destination. [Press Release]

Lego calendar uses bricks to organize your office, makes productivity adorable

DNP Lego calendar syncs with Google Calendar, makes barefoot runs to the office kitchen treacherous

Vitamins Design wanted an organizational calendar that was “big and visible,” so it did what any company would do: it turned to Lego. Using the plastic bricks, Vitamins was able to create a three-month calendar that provides near-instant visual feedback about which employee is scheduled to work on what project and when. Sounds simple enough, right? Here’s where it gets interesting: Take a picture of the quarterly chronicle with any smartphone, send the image to a special email address and the block placement will be translated to its Google Calendar equivalent. Even better, the sync software was written using open-source code, and Vitamins plans to make it available online. The company says it’ll work with any cloud-based calendar too — not just Mountain View’s. Sounds great, as long as no one’s making late-night barefoot runs to the office kitchen.

LEGO Calendar Syncs with Google Calendar: Brickmented Reality

There’s already an official LEGO calendar, but design studio Vitamins made a more practical version with the help of custom software. Even though the calendar is made entirely out of LEGO pieces, Vitamins were able to make it interactive and sync to the studio’s online calendar.

Each month is represented in the calendar by long rectangular panels. For instance in the image above you can see a three month timeline. Each month is divided into columns that represent the days of the week. To assign a project, employees simply attach a brick onto the proper date. One brick represents half a day alloted to a particular project, with the color of the brick representing a particular project. Should there be a specific employee assigned to a project, that employee will be represented by a minifig.

The LEGO calendar helps employees take note of their schedule at a glance, but what if they’re not at the office? That’s where Vitamins’ custom program comes in handy. Anyone can take a picture of the calendar and send it to a certain email address, and in doing so the studio’s Google Calendar account will be synced to the LEGO calendar. The syncing program was made using openFrameworks.

Vitamins said that they’ve been using their system for almost a year and are very happy with it. They love that they have a tangible representation of how much time they have – the bricks – and that they can literally share their time with each other by trading bricks. They promise to upload the code for their program to encourage more people to adapt or play with their design. Perhaps the syncing can be automated with a camera or a color sensor?

Google Calendar for Android gets cross-device notification sync

Google Calendar for Android gets crossdevice notification sync

The simplest updates are sometimes the best. See the latest update to Google Calendar for Android as an example: the release adds notification syncing between Android devices, saving the trouble of clearing multiple alerts while hopping from tablet to phone and back. That’s the only major addition, but it could represent a big time saver for anyone with a busy schedule. If you’re in that camp, you can grab the new Calendar now through Google Play.

PSA: Windows Phones to lose Google Sync activation on August 1st

PSA Windows Phones without GDR2 lose sync for new Google accounts tomorrow

Windows Phone users who want to use Google Sync for contact and calendar integration had better act quickly: today is the last day that they can link their handsets to the service before Google pulls the plug. From August 1st onwards, Google Sync will only work on a given Windows Phone if it’s already configured. The GDR 2 upgrade keeps syncing alive through CalDAV and CardDAV support, although many users could go without that support for some time — to date, Americans can only see the OS refresh on the HTC 8XT, Lumia 520, Lumia 925 and Lumia 1020. If you’re not in that group and miss the Google Sync deadline, you’ll just have to sit tight while Microsoft finishes rolling out the GDR 2 update this summer.
