Wind Mobile to participate in Canada’s 700MHz wireless auction (update: more providers)

Wind Mobile store

Wind Mobile apparently isn’t worried that it has to fend without Verizon’s help: the carrier has confirmed to MobileSyrup that it will participate in Canada’s 700MHz wireless auction. While the provider doesn’t have much more to share at this stage, it sees the LTE-friendly spectrum bid as proof of a “long-term commitment” to the country. The company will still have to win spectrum to better compete with Bell, Rogers and Telus, but its entry should assuage Canucks worried that only the incumbents can afford to buy more bandwidth.

Update: EastLink and Public Mobile are also committed to the auction. Mobilicity, however, has yet to reveal its plans; if it doesn’t announce its participation in the auction before noon today, it’s out of the running.

Rogers hires Vodafone UK chief Guy Laurence as CEO

Rogers hires Vodafone UK chief Guy Laurence as CEO

Rogers’ patience in finding a replacement CEO has paid off in spades. The Canadian telecom giant has just confirmed that Guy Laurence, Vodafone UK’s current chief executive, will be its new leader as of December 2nd. The hire gives Rogers a CEO who’s not only well-versed in mobile and media services, but has a reputation as a reformer — he shook up Vodafone UK’s corporate culture shortly after taking the reins in 2008. While it’s not certain that he’ll repeat history at Rogers, we wouldn’t expect him to maintain the status quo for very long.

LG G2 ships to six Canadian carriers on September 27th

Canadians won’t have to wait long for their version of the LG G2. The 5.2-inch smartphone is now due to reach Bell, Rogers, Sasktel, Telus, Videotron and Wind Mobile on September 27th, two days after it launches on T-Mobile in the States. The carriers haven’t yet divulged pricing, although we’re not expecting Bell, Rogers or Telus to charge much more than $200 on contract, like some of their American counterparts.

Telus bringing Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear to Canada on October 4th

Canadians won’t have to wait much longer than their American counterparts to get their hands on the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear. Telus sends word that it will carry both Samsung devices on October 4th, just a few days after AT&T gets its turn at the Note 3. The carrier doesn’t yet have pricing. As for additional Canadian networks? We’ve reached out to Bell and Rogers for their launch details, and we’ll let you know when they have something to share. If history is any indication, though, other providers will quickly follow in Telus’ footsteps.

Roku 3 finally goes on sale in Canada for $110

It wouldn’t surprise us to hear that some people in Canada have already managed to snag a Roku 3. But, the truth is the miniature video player’s just now officially hitting shelves there, nearly six months after its release in the US. Evidently, The Great White North availability signifies a footprint expansion for Roku’s newest box, and it provides interested Canucks streaming access to over 450 channels — even newly minted ones like Livestream’s. The Roku 3 will be available for $109.99 at many brick-and-mortar and online shops across Canada, including Future Shop, Best Buy, Staples, Walmart and more.

Wind Mobile reportedly near acquiring Mobilicity’s subscribers

Mobilicity store

Mobilicity lost out on its chances of a rescue from either Telus or Verizon, and there’s now talk that the ailing Canadian carrier has run out of options. The Financial Post claims that Wind Mobile has nearly completed a deal to acquire Mobilicity’s cellular subscribers for little to no cash. Mobilicity would only hold on its wireless spectrum and tax losses in the hopes of selling those separately. Neither of the involved companies has commented on the rumor. However, any handover would be relatively painless; when the two carriers have similar coverage and frequency support, customers almost wouldn’t notice the difference.

Verizon CEO Says Carrier Not Going To Canada

Verizon CEO Says Carrier Not Going To Canada

It was first rumored back in June that the largest U.S. carrier, Verizon Wireless, was interested into making an entry in Canada. It was said that the carrier was looking to purchase a small Canadian carrier before bidding for wireless spectrum that the country auctions off next year. Last month it was said that Verizon had decided against purchasing a small local carrier because it first wanted to see how it did in the auction. The carrier didn’t reveal its official position during the rumor cycle, but it is now said that it has no plans of going to Canada. In a phone interview, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam said that the decision has to do with their view of the kind of value they can offer their shareholders. “If we thought it had a great value creation we would do it,” he said.

McAdam also said that speculation about Verizon entering to Canada was “way overblown.” Fran Shammo, Verizon’s CFO, said back in June that they were looking into this opportunity, that Verizon was just dipping its toe in the water. McAdam said that the press made more of the carrier’s interest in Canada than there was inside the company itself.

Verizon ices Canadian expansion after acquiring Vodafone stake

Verizon shelves Canadian travel plans after acquiring Vodafone stake

After flying into Canada and making noise about acquiring spectrum or buying operators Wind Mobile and Mobilicity, Verizon is taking its ball and going home. You might expect that’s because it just dropped $130 billion buying Vodafone’s 45 percent stake in Verizon Wireless — the largest US corporate acquisition in over a decade. But Verizon said it had more to do with “what kind of value we could get for shareholders,” and that “if we thought it had great value creation we would do it.” That might be a boost to Rogers, Telus and BCE in Canada, but Verizon’s withdrawal doesn’t change one fact: all three are still bidding for a single block of 700MHz spectrum in next year’s wireless auction.

There’s no official word on ship dates or prices, but the company says the 1020 will be available in both black and yellow. Let’s hope that it reaches Canada soon — rumors persist of even bigger devices that could overshadow the 1020 in the near future.

Moto X to launch early at Rogers stores, but only in ‘limited quantities’

Moto X reportedly available early through Rogers 'in limited quantities'

Canadians frequently wait longer for new technology than their American counterparts, but they’re catching a break today. Following a MobileSyrup leak, Rogers has confirmed to Engadget that some of its stores will be selling the Moto X in “limited quantities” this weekend — a full week ahead of the AT&T release. We wouldn’t count on finding the Android flagship after dealing with spotty availability during previous early launches, but the news is still a pleasant surprise for Motorola-minded Canucks.
