Yesterday we learned that King.com, makers of the wildly popular game Candy Crush Saga, had submitted a trademark application for the word "Candy"
2013 was the year of Candy Crush Saga. It was on television, in music videos, and — most importantly — it was in the hearts and minds of millions of mobile gamers around the globe. Let’s see if one of these ten alternatives can’t dislodge it.
Look back on 2013 and one thing will definitely stand out, Candy Crush Saga. Even you don’t indulge in this popular game, you might have received requests from friends on Facebook who are ardent fans of one of the best selling casual games of all time. Today King, which develops the game, sent out some news that’s likely to be well received by Candy Crush Saga fans. An expansion for the game has been released, called “Dreamworld,” this mode is only available for players who have crossed level 50 on the Saga map.
King says that the Dreamworld mode brings a “magical twist” to the Candy Crush Saga game, it will transport players in a parallel world of dream inspired levels. Once players cross level 50, a new dream like Saga map appears where players can experience previous levels of the game but in a much more challenging way. It also adds a new character, Odus the Owl, who will introduce an additional layer of gameplay. There are new “mesmerising” special effects as well, such as the Moon Struck reward which brings a new game state where some colored candies are removed, making it easier for players to clear the level. At launch, 65 Dreamworld levels are available, player progression on mobile devices will sync with Facebook, so there won’t ever be a disruption regardless of how they choose to play the game. Dreamworld is available today across Facebook as well as iOS and Android.

Even if you don’t play this insanely popular game on Facebook, you’ve probably heard about it or have received a request from one of your Facebook friends. Right now, Candy Crush Saga is the most popular game being played on the world’s largest social network. It logged 9.7 million daily active users back in January, breaking FarmVille 2′s record of 8.7 million daily active users. U.K. based King is the developer of this game, and according to The Telegraph, it has filed for an initial public offering in U.S.A. King is seeking to go public and raise a ton of money in the process.
Thought to be the biggest IPO by a U.K. based technology company in years, King is expected to go public on the Nasdaq exchange. King has reportedly submitted the required S-1 paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission confidentially, which small companies are allowed to do under the JOBS Act. Twitter took the same route with its pre-IPO filing. The developer has reportedly held discussions with Bank of America, JP Morgan and Credit Suisse to lead the IPO. It will have a tough time convincing investors that it won’t go the way of Zynga, which has not only lost users, but has also lost revenue. Currently it has a market capitalization of $2.9 billion. As per the confidential filing, King is valued at $5 billion. No date or offer price is available at this point in time.

For a number of years, Zynga has been sitting atop the Facebook-gaming mountain as their games have always been popular ever since FarmVille. The last couple of months haven’t been too kind for the king of Facebook gaming as it’s been sued for copyright infringement by EA and has shut down a number of its titles just to save a buck. It looks like their popularity is slowly dwindling as today, we hear there’s a new king sitting atop the Facebook-gaming mountain.
King.com has officially taken the #1 spot from Zynga in the world of Facebook games as three of its titles have made it into Facebook’s top 10 list for this month. The game that has pushed FarmVille 2 out of its #1 spot is Candy Crush Saga, which is a match-3 game similar to Bejeweled. Candy Crush Saga has over 9.7 million daily players, while Zynga’s FarmVille 2 has 8.8 million.
What helps Candy Crush Saga’s popularity is the fact the game synchronizes across all devices its played on, which currently is Facebook, Android and iOS devices. Zynga released a FarmVille title last year on iOS, but had issues when it came to synching with your Facebook game. Currently there’s no FarmVille 2 game available on mobile.
