Resident Evil 6 stolen copies sold in Poland, Capcom confirms

It isn’t a good day for Capcom, as the publisher has confirmed that a small number of stolen copies of Resident Evil 6 have been sold in some Polish stores. These bum sales come almost exactly a month before the game was slated to hit shelves. The good news is that the early sales seem to be pretty small scale, but still, a situation like this is one that a publisher doesn’t want to find itself in.

In a statement to Eurogamer today, the company confirmed that it had launched an investigation into the sale of Resident Evil 6 after reports surfaced last week that claimed some retailers were selling the title early. Capcom then confirmed that at least a few copies of Resident Evil 6 had been sold, saying “At this time, all we can add is that it would appear this unfortunate incident is limited to a small quantity of stolen copies of the German USK PlayStation 3 version of the game.”

One of those copies popped up on eBay with a starting bid of €478.78 and a buyout price of €1,196.71. The auction has since been ended by the seller, and it seems that he or she didn’t know that the copy they had was stolen, as the description says that the game is “legit” and was purchased “legally from the store.” Just in case you were wondering, the seller wasn’t able to net any bids before they closed the auction.

Eurogamer says that its unknown how many stolen copies were sold, but since the reports only seem to be about one or two stores in Poland, it probably isn’t that many. Capcom’s investigation seems to be ongoing despite the fact that it can confirm that stolen copies have been sold, so we’ll probably be finding out more about this soon. Keep it tuned here to SlashGear, and in the meantime, tell us: do you like Resident Evil so much that you’d drop €1,200 to get RE 6 a month early?

Capcom announces Resident Evil.net free online service

Games like Blizzard’s World of Warcraft and Diablo 3 have online armories or profiles whereby players can view their characters or characters of their friends online. Details such as the skills used, talents utilized, equipment, achievements, guild affiliations and etc. can be seen, letting players keep track of their characters without having to launch the game, and to a certain extent let them show off to friends. Now it seems that something similar will be happening with Capcom’s upcoming Resident Evil 6 in which they will be launching an accompanying free service called Resident Evil.net.

The website will track data collected from your game, such as weapon proficiency, types of enemies killed, Mercenaries scores and basically lets players compete with other Resident Evil 6 gamers around the world. RE.net will also allow players to schedule events where other players can participate in and gain points which can be used to redeem rewards. There’s even a feature called a Champion belt where players will have to play every week to maintain the belt, much like how boxers have to defend their titles. In any case more details about RE.net can be found in the source link below.

Resident Evil 6 will come with a “Agent Hunt” mode that lets you play as a zombie

Resident Evil 6We’re sure that everyone loves killing zombies and monsters, which is what games like Resident Evil 6 will let you do. However if you’ve always wondered what it might feel like to be on the opposing team where you are the zombie/monster and you’re the one doing the hunting, then you’re in luck. The folks at Adriasang has revealed via Famitsu that Resident Evil 6 will be getting a new “Agent Hunt” mode, which as the name itself has probably implied, will let players hunt agents.

It will be integrated directly into the game itself and players will need to complete the main campaign first in order to unlock it. It will also be available in multiplayer mode where players can play against each other as either an agent or as a zombie (think Left 4 Dead) although players will not be able to tell an AI controlled monster or a player controlled one. So if you’re wondering why it’s close to impossible to down a particular monster, chances are there’s a skilled player behind it. Resident Evil 6 is certainly shaping up to be an interesting game, so look forward to it on your Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on the 2nd of October.

Capcom posts strong financial report for Q1 2012

Capcom is looking pretty good at the end of its first quarter for the year, thanks in no small part to the success of Dragon’s Dogma. We’ve known for a while that Dragon’s Dogma has passed 1 million units shipped, but today Capcom reiterated that figure – along with the intention of turning Dragon’s Dogma into a series – in its quarterly report. Total Dragon’s Dogma shipments currently sit at 1.05 million, with the game doing particularly well in Japan.

Overall, Capcom’s net sales increased 55.8% year-over-year, settling at ¥18.62 billion ($238 million). Operating income came in at ¥2.66 billion ($34.03 million) for the period ending June 30, climbing 244.4% year-over-year. Finally, net profits landed at ¥1.32 billion ($16.9 million), which is a whopping 290.2% increase over Q1 2011.

So Capcom is looking pretty good all around heading into its Q2, but strangely enough, some of thanks for the successful quarter belongs to Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Despite leaving some critics underwhelmed, the game has managed to ship 450,000 copies so far, so it seems that fans don’t care all that much about poor review scores in this instance. Dragon’s Dogma and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City are the only titles listed as “major” releases for the 3-month period, so Capcom apparently made a significant portion of its revenue from just those two last quarter. Capcom also says its social efforts, such as The Smurfs’ Village and Snoopy’s Street Fair, brought in a steady stream of revenue throughout Q1.

We’re indifferent when it comes to Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, but it’s good to see that Dragon’s Dogma is exceeding expectations (at least in Japan). It was a solid open-world RPG title that wasn’t without its flaws, but luckily it sold well enough to warrant a sequel, so Capcom will have a chance to fix those issues with upcoming titles in the series. It’ll be exciting to see where the franchise goes next, and it just goes to show that not all gamers are opposed to giving a new IP a go this late in the generation. Let’s hope that Capcom gives the franchise the attention it deserves and transforms it from something good into something excellent.

Capcom hints at upcoming Monster Hunter announcement

If you’ve enjoyed the Monster Hunter series to date, it seems that Capcom has some Monster Hunter-related announcements to make “very soon”. This was revealed by community manager, Yuri Araujo, who posted this message on Capcom-Unity’s blog:

“I actually joined as a user specifically to inquire (read: complain) about the situation regarding Monster Hunter 2 (dos) Western release back in 2005/06 – so I know exactly how it feels to be lacking a new MH game for a while.

Patience is a virtue, right? Eventually it pays off somehow. We’ll have something veeeeery soon.”

At this point it is unknown as to what the announcement could be about. Some are thinking (and hoping) it could be Monster Hunter 4 and 3G localization details, but we guess we will have to wait and find out, so stay tuned for more updates in the future!

If you’re a girl gamer and you’re all about girl power and whatnot, you might be interested to learn that as a reward/bonus for buying the Street Fighter X Tekken game from e-Capcom, you will be able to get a set of three special girls-only replacement jackets for the game. The content of the game will otherwise remain unchanged, but you will be able to look at the game and see only the female characters, which we guess some guy gamers and fans will be able to appreciate as well. Granted not to most impressive or desirable of perks we’ve seen to date, but for fans and collectors of the Street Fighter franchise, this is something we guess might be worth adding to your collection!

Now we’re sure that some of you guys are also probably wondering what happened for those who want to buy it on Steam? Well according to a post on Capcom’s blog (source link below), it seems that the release on Valve’s Steam platform was delayed due to an “unforeseen error with the Valve submission process”. Capcom has stated that they are now expecting the release of the DLC on Steam to be sometime early this week, so be sure to keep an eye out for it, or check back with us as we will be keeping you updated with the news!

Capcom Vancouver hit with layoffs

Dead Rising 2 developer Capcom Vancouver has laid off 7% of its workforce, the company announced on Twitter today. However, Capcom doesn’t want you to take this as a sign that the studio is trouble, with Capcom Vancouver quick to clarify that the layoffs were “a result of unsuitable fit with the studio goals.” It’s unclear what Capcom Vancouver means by that, but we think we have an idea.

After all, the sad truth is that layoffs happen all the time in the world of games development (at least they do these days), and they don’t always come about as a result of a studio finding itself in financial trouble. With games going through multiple phases of development and usually taking years to complete, most studios can’t afford to keep everyone on the payroll from start to finish. Capcom Vancouver currently has a new unannounced IP in the works, so it could be that these layoffs are occurring because the game has moved along to the next stage in its development.

Whatever the reason, it definitely isn’t because Capcom Vancouver is having trouble making payroll – shortly after it tweeted that it had laid off 7% of its employees, the studio followed up by saying that it’s “still growing and aggressively seeking great talent.” It’s hard to say what’s going on behind Capcom Vancouver’s doors, but we can say that the studio isn’t likely to shut down anytime soon.
