Hyundai to Give Free Apple iPad to 2011 Equus Owners

2011_Hyundai_Equus.jpg
Hyundai has unveiled the 2011 Hyundai Equus, a large, rear-drive luxury sedan aimed at the Mercedes S-Class and Lexus LS, according to the New York Times.
That’s not the purpose of this post, though. It appears Hyundai, in lieu of having an established status brand, has come up with some innovative ways to pamper Equus customers who will be expected to spend between $50,000 to $60,000 on the car.
For scheduled maintenance, Hyundai dealers will pick up Equus models from owner’s homes, leave a loaner car, and then return the Equus after service, the report said. In addition, instead of the usual 300-page owners manual, buyers will receive a virtual owners manual on an Apple iPad that they can also use to schedule service appointments and operate other apps.
“Nobody wants to go to the dealership, not even a Lexus or BMW dealer,” John Krafcik, Hyundai’s CEO in North America, said in the report.

Configure your $200K McLaren Here

McLaren_Configurator.jpg
Good news, car shoppers: McLaren Automotive has unveiled an online configurator for its MP4-12C supercar. Bring a big wallet.
The configurator lets you choose from 17 different exterior paint finishes, including eight Special and six Elite colors. It also lets you fiddle with the MP4-12C’s interior, giving you a choice of custom leather options.
Inside, the car features a portrait touch-screen, which is similar to the upcoming, all-electric 2012 Tesla Model S. The McLaren MP4-12C also comes with a bespoke entertainment and communications center, consisting of a Meridian two-channel speaker system, Bluetooth, a 40GB hard drive with media player,  and an electronic user manual. The system also features USB, PDMI, and audio jacks, plus iPod and Zune compatibility.
A separate IRIS option upgrades the car’s telematics system to support voice control for the navigation system. It also doubles the hard drive capacity and adds a photo viewer and an e-mail client. A WLAN radio lets owners transfer media wirelessly from a laptop, and the stereo system goes from four to seven speakers.
The MP4-12C itself features a 600-horsepower, turbocharged, 3.8-liter V8 engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and is expected to blast off 0-60 runs in under three seconds. It will cost about $200,000 when it arrives at eight U.S. dealers in 2011, according to a separate Car and Driver report. Sounds good to us; we’ll be out back picking some money off of the tree.

Microsoft Teams with Ford to Monitor, Charge Electric Cars

IMG_6362.JPG

When Ford’s first all-electric car, the Ford Focus Electric, ships in 2011, the recharging system will be remotely managed by Microsoft. What sounds like an odd-couple fit – Microsoft? manage off-hours home electrical usage? – actually makes sense because of Microsoft Hohm, a year-old Internet service helping consumers monitor all kinds of home energy usage. In the case of electric cars, time-shifting the recharge to late at night is important because recharging effectively a home’s daytime energy usage.

Pioneer Puts a Home Theater System in your Dash

Just because you’re driving the highways of this land doesn’t mean you have to miss out on being entertained. What else to think about the just-released Pioneer AVH-P3200BT and AVH-P3200DVD, which offer audio and video capabilities that used to be reserved for the living room? Both let you listen to your iPod’s songs, watch DVD videos, view digital photos, and add GPS navigation. The idea, says Pioneer, is to turn the car into a hub for entertainment, convenience, and communication. And you thought it was just for driving.

Both models also offer a 5.8-inch touch interface, an SD card slot, iTunes tagging via RDS, album art, and passenger control. The AVH-P3200BT throws in Bluetooth connectivity so that you don’t have to remove your eyes from the road while driving, and lists for $499. The Bluetooth-free AVH-P3200DVD lists for $449.

I like the notice on the Pioneer page that says “Do not use your Pioneer system if doing so will divert your attention in any way from the safe operation of your vehicle.” So apparently the driver shouldn’t look at the DVD playing on the dashboard.

Toyotas Worst Nightmare: EMI-Linked Unintended Acceleration

toyota-logo-big[1].jpgElectromagnetic inference (EMI) as a cause of Toyota’s unintended acceleration woes: That’s the latest allegation. And one that Toyota quickly rebutted, which is not the same as saying successfully refuted. EMI is scary in theory: The electronic devices we carry with us such as cellphones, laptops, and iPods emit radio waves that might interfere with cars, pacemakers, or the airplanes we fly in. This potential cause was highlighted today in a press conference by Tom Murray, an Ohio lawyer who’s filed dozens of unintended-acceleration lawsuits the last two decades.

Car Review: 2011 VW Touareg Goes Hybrid

VWTouaeregHere.jpg
FLORENCE, Italy — Volkswagen completely redesigned the VW Touareg SUV for 2011, offering a host of technology features and hybrid, gasoline, and diesel engines. Every model should be more efficient with better engines and the loss of 440 pounds of road-hugging weight over the first generation Touareg of 2003. The diesel model gets more than 30 mpg. The 2011 Touareg is also nicer inside and that makes it a solid contender against the ubiquitous Lexus RX350, the dominant midsize SUV. The only concerns about the new model are whether VW will make the smart decision on including as standard important safety (Bluetooth) and convenience (iPod adapter) items in the version coming to the U.S. this fall, and whether VW is the name you think of when you’re shopping for luxury SUVs

VWs Dynamic Light Assist: High, Low, In-Between Beams

The 2011 Volkswagen Touareg (review)takes its headlamps beyond the basic high and low beams with Dynamic Lighting Assist. It uses the Touareg’s forward-facing camera to steer the headlamps away from oncoming cars. It effectively masks the headlamps so glare doesn’t reach cars coming at you.

VW Touareg Area View Camera for Submarine Races, Too?

VWTouaregTrailer.jpg

The Area View four-camera system on the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg offers views front, side, and back, plus a combined overhead view, all on the big 8-inch navigation screen. At the Touareg press introduction, VW touted the SUV’s ablity to tow 7,000 pound loads and the backup camera view (above) that shows you the trailer hitch. At the press conference overview, the English translation of the overview speech (in German) we heard was that the driver will find the rear camera “helpful for coupling.”

Texas Car Salesman Disables 100+ Cars, Gets Arrested

Police in Austin, Texas have arrested 20-year-old Omar Ramos-Lopez on the belief he remotely disabled over 100 vehicles sold through his former car dealership, according to Tom’s Guide.
Texas Auto Center apparently uses a Web-based vehicle immobilization system to remind customers late on their car payments that they’re delinquent. The dealership installs a small black box under the dashboard that communicates with a central Web site, the report said.
Ramos-Lopez is believed to have broken into the system via another employee’s account and disabled over 100 cars after being laid off. He also set many of the cars to honk their horns repeatedly. Many owners became stranded, or woken up late at night by the car horn and being forced to disconnect the battery.
Police tracked Ramos-Lopez to his home via his AT&T internet service IP address, according to the report. And here we thought car dealers were a shady bunch to begin with. (Image credit: Wikimedia Commons)
