Hy Tric Electro Cycle

HyTric_Electro_Cycle.jpg

Hy Tric Motors, a company based in Ventura, California that offers electric vehicles and electric retro fit kits, has introduced the somewhat puzzling Hy Tric Electro Cycle, AutoblogGreen reports. The Electro Cycle has a top speed of 125 mph and can run up to 250 miles on a single charge, according to an extremely sparse Web site the company has set up for the car.

Hy Tric Motors lists the Electro Cycle for sale for $24,000… and that’s about all it says. This wouldn’t be significant except that the company already sells at least three other electric vehicles, including a little $10,000 runabout called the 2009 AFS HYTRIC Mini XR, and a couple of larger vehicles (one of which looks a lot like the Electro Cycle, but is apparently different). At any rate, it sure looks interesting—if extremely confusing.

New Mostly Electric Car: Opel Ampera Debuts at Geneva Auto Show

Opel Ampera
General Motors is extending its extended-range electric car line across the Atlantic Ocean with the planned introduction of the Opel Ampera at the Geneva Auto Show in March. Opel is GM’s European subsidiary and and the Ampera shares the same drivetrain as the Chevrolet Volt as well as with the Cadillac Converj (see Electric Cars Take Center Stage at Detroit Auto Show) that was introduced at Detroit’s North American International Auto Show this month. The five-door, four-seat Ampera will run for up to 60 km (36 miles) on electric power and then switch to an internal combustion engine for as long as the gas tank or your bladder holds out. The lithium ion batteries will charge on 230-volt electric power; in the U.S. there are options for 120 volt charging (slow but 120 VAC is probably already in your garage) or 230 volts (only in the garage if you’ve got an electric dryer).

Detroit Auto Show: Quirks, Oddities, Technology

Detroit auto show
The just-concluded Detroit auto show was one of three January events that may be in decline as exhibitors and attendees ponder the importance of the in-person trade show. The new year’s important car technology I can imagine, the navigation-added update to Ford Sync, was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show a couple days earlier, probably because that crowd appreciates the technology more. CES, too, had slipping attendance, and MacWorld’s future is none-too-certain with Apple pulling out of MacWorld. Previously, I covered the Top 10 Cars and Top 10 Green Cars of the North American International Auto Show (Detroits’ formal name). Here’s a gossipy rundown on everything else (after the jump).

Mazda3 to Get DSG, Start/Stop Options

2010_Mazda3.jpg

Hot on the heels of Ford declaring that all its cars will soon have start/stop capability, Mazda has announced that it will also offer start/stop and a dual clutch gearbox for the new 2010 Mazda3 sedan, at least in Europe, according to AutoblogGreen.

For the uninitiated, start/stop systems essentially kill the engine when the car is idling at a stoplight, and then seamlessly kick it back in as soon as the driver begins to depress the accelerator. Mazda has a proprietary version of this system that relies on direct injection to function, instead of putting additional wear on the regular starter in the car.

Mazda said that the system will be available as an option on both the 1.6 and 2.0-liter blocks. Since the automaker sells the 2.0-liter version here, along with a higher-output 2.3-liter four cylinder, it’s natural to presume that the technology will make its way over here in short order.

Aptera Wheels Out Pre-Production 2e

Aptera%202e.jpg

After a technical road bump and the ensuing production delay, Aptera — the maker of the battery-electric 2e three-wheeler — says its airplane-like EV is finally ready. The first pre-production model of what can be considered the world’s most innovative eco-mobile was wheeled out yesterday, echoing the excitement of more than 4,000 eager drivers who already reserved the vehicle.

According to Edmunds, the 2e “will be evaluated for performance, durability and fit and finish prior to start of retail production in October.” The car is expected to go zero to 60 mph in under 6 seconds, topping out at 90 mph and traveling 100 miles on a single charge.

Like the Tesla Roadster, Aptera’s battery-powered rival, the 2e is a two-seater. However, the Aptera will be sold at only a fraction of Tesla’s near-$100,000 sticker. With initial sales limited to California, the 2e will range from $25,000 to $45,000.

Tesla Roadster Out of Reach? Get Tesla Hot Wheels Instead

Tesla%20Hot%20Wheels.jpg

Brand new, fresh off the line Tesla Roadsters look almost like toys, especially to their brand new owners. But these Teslas really are toys — Hot Wheels to be exact. So if you can’t shoot for the real thing (and at over $100,000 who can blame you), you can have a scaled down version for just a few bucks.

While the real Tesla Motors is in trouble again, having raised the price of its Roadster by at least $6,700 and screwed some 400 buyers out of their deposits, these tiny replicas should sell just fine. And speaking of replicas, Autoblog Green has it on good authority that the toys are quite convincing, seeing as the Hot Wheels maker “Mattel reportedly had access to electronic files of the Roadster from Tesla.” Tesla Hot Wheels are available in Metallic Aqua, Metallic Watermelon, and Metalflake Silver. The fourth, Metallic Grey model is said to come out on Valentines Day.

Detroit Auto Show: Top 10 Cars

Mini Cooper Convertible
The 2009 Detroit auto show (a.k.a. the North American International Auto Show) was a bit soft on mainstream car introductions compared to shows in years past. Still, Ford showed off its white bread-and-butter Taurus sedan, and Cadillac made its SRX tall wagon/crossover more SUV-like. And the non-Michigan autoamakers, such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, and Toyota, all had great new cars, too.

All in all, there’s enough to easily compile a list of the 10 best mainstream (gasoline-burning, non-hybrid, non-electric) cars from the show. That’s apart from the 10 best green cars of the Detroit show. We omitted cars that might have been worthy in other years, such as the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, a $45,000, 540-hp ode to go-fast-in-a-straight-line technology. And the most important car or car technology of the Detroit auto show wasn’t a car–it was Ford’s unveiling at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show of a new version of Ford Sync that adds rudimentary navigation, no extra charge, to its already impressive features set of Bluetooth, voice command, and iPod / music player integration.

Tesla Motors Screws Customers Who Placed Deposits

Tesla_Motors_LA_Dealer_Autopia.jpg

In a troubling sign, Tesla Motors has effectively raised the price of its all-electric Roadster sports car by at least $6,700, Autopia reports, a move that the company says is necessary for survival.

The increased pricing affects not only new customers, but specifically the 400 who have already placed a deposit on 2008 Roadsters that haven’t been delivered. Those customers must now pay thousands extra for features they thought were included in the original deal, according to the report, even though some had already placed deposits of up to $50,000. The biggest change is that the “high-power connector,” which recharges the car’s lithium-ion battery in as little as three hours, is no longer included. Now Tesla wants an extra $3,000 for it. Without the high-power connector, it takes up to 37 hours to charge the car. Other options, such as Bluetooth, navigation, and metallic paint all have higher prices as well.

“That’s ill-advised,” said Eric Noble, president of the auto-industry consulting firm The Car Lab, in the article. “Your first buyers are your emissaries. Treat them wrong and all the advertising in the world won’t cure it. It’s just bad marketing.” Aaron Bragman, an IHS Global Insight analyst, said in the report that hitting customers up for more money after they’ve put down deposits is highly unusual. “They’re probably a lot closer to the edge than they want you to think.”

Johnson Controls re3 Concept

Johnson_Controls_re3_1.jpg

Johnson Controls, an automotive parts supplier direct to automakers, has unveiled its own green concept car at the Detroit Auto Show in an effort to showcase some of their latest parts, AutoblogGreen reports. The re3 features a plug-in hybrid powertrain, a lithium ion battery pack, and eco-friendly renewable interior materials.

The report said that Johnson Controls has a joint venture with Saft to manufacture car battery packs. The r3’s own battery pack can provide EV-only power in city environments; it sits in between the seats underneath the center console. The car also features what the company calls an “extended cluster,” which includes a traditional gauge cluster along with a 7-inch touchscreen and another 4.3-inch display, plus built-in Ecospace storage technology (whatever that is).

The center console system also includes the Johnson Controls Mobile Device Gateway with E-Bin, and Mobile Commerce with Card Reader. The Mobile Device Gateway adds convenience by linking mobile phones, navigation devices or MP3 players, complete with a compartment to store, connect, and power them all in. Mobile Commerce lets customers pay for fuel, parking, meals, and such while traveling, using their linked credit card or mobile phone while inside the car. (More pics after the break.)

Detroit Auto Show: The Top 10 Green Cars

IMG_0201.jpg
It’s just as hard picking the 10 best green cars from Detroit’s North American International Auto Show as it is picking the 10 best cars overall, but for different reasons. It’s hard to keep the 10-best-greenies list down to 10; it’s almost as hard to get the 10-best other cars list up to 10. Toyota and Lexus could fill out much of the green cars list on their own, with the 2010 Prius and its astounding 50 mpg fuel economy; the HS 250h, a Prius by Lexus (“don’t call it a Lexus Prius,” the Lexus people moan); and Toyota’s battery-only concept car, the TF-EV. Here’s my top 10 green cars from Detroit’s 2009 auto show, rated by likely impact, including the odds of actually coming to production.

1. Toyota Prius Hybrid
IMG_0635.jpg
Toyota filed for more than 1,000 patents with the third-generation Prius arriving late this spring. It’s roomier inside with a revised roofline, yet the shape is unmistakably Prius. Most of the drivetrain parts are smaller, lighter, and more efficient. Combine that with very low wind resistance and you get 50 mpg combined city/highway mileage. A replacement was long overdue since the current model dates to 2004.
