CES 2009: eCoupling Wireless Charging For Phones, iPods, Tools, and More

ecouplingcarcase.gif

Seeing as how the showroom floor hasn’t actually opened yet, it seems a bit early to start talking about the big trends for CES 2009. We have, however, seen a few miniature ones popping up here and there, like, say, wireless charging.

A company called Fulton has rolled out one of the more compelling examples of the technology. Last night at Digital Experience, the company showcased some samples of its eCoupling wireless power. With help from Leggett & Platt, the company has rolled out the technology in a handful of products. On display at the show last night were a power tool case and car cradle that utilized eCoupling.

PCMag executive editor Jeremy Kaplan was particular taken with the new technology. After the jump, Kaplan explains eCoupling in a video.

CES 2009: Ford Upgrades Sync

ford_sync_2.0.jpg

Microsoft’s Sync, a voice-activated communications and entertainment system available exclusively on new Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles, will receive several major upgrades as part of its 2.0 release.

According to The Detroit News, the second-generation version of the Bluetooth-wired system was unwrapped at CES last night and will include new features such as traffic updates for selected routes, turn-by-turn directions, weather for specific areas, and personalized news, including sports scores, stock listings, and entertainment highlights. First introduced in the 2008 Ford Taurus, the upgraded Sync will be available free of charge for three years on all 2010 Ford models.

Stay tuned for more on this and other hot Microsoft tech as we continue to bring you the latest straight from the CES floor. You can also learn more about Ford Sync here.

CES 2009: Riding Along With ICO mim Mobile Satellite TV

ico-mim-blog.jpg
I needed to take a trip to Walgreens here at CES, so I hopped into a demo car from ICO, which has launched the world’s biggest commercial satellite to beam TV into millions of cars next year.

They gave me some more details of their system, which is based on the international DVB-SH standard. The ICO mim TV system uses a satellite signal reinforced with ground-based repeaters to connect auto passengers with 10-15 channels of TV, plus navigation, emergency assistance, and even Web-based instant messaging.

The system runs on the S-band, which is near the 2,100-Mhz cellular band used by European 3G cell phone systems. But because it’s a broadcast system, ICO needs far fewer repeaters than a cellular network would; they’re covering Las Vegas with two towers, plus the satellite.

Many countries will be using DVB-SH equipment on the S-Band, so there won’t be the sort of “U.S. versus the world” division you see in traditional TV and cellular. That’s going to make mim-compatible equipment cheap, according to Alcatel-Lucent, who makes the network equipment.

2010 Scion xB RS 6.0

Scion_xB_RS_6.0_1.jpg

Scion fans with a taste for car tech will want to check out the xB Release Series 6.0, a limited production version that features an array of navigation, entertainment, media tools, and other options centered around a 5.8-inch touch screen Audio Visual Navigation (AVN) head unit—although so far (for mysterious reasons) the company has chosen only to release a couple of vague, black-and-white photos of it.

The AVN head unit features flash memory, voice recognition, MSN Direct, and Bluetooth connectivity. It also comes with an SD card reader, iPod connector, and a USB port. It’s satellite and HD Radio ready, and can play DVDs and iPod videos whenever the transmission is in park. The owner can also customize the display and choose from over 32,000 colors.

CES 2009: mRoamer Brings Internet Radio to Your Car

miroamer.gif

Here’s something cool: Internet radio for your car. mRoamer integrates the wonders of streaming Internet music into a standard car stereo alongside the standard AM/FM selections.

The mRoamer radio features more than 16,000 Internet radio stations from more than 200 countries. The system utilizes iRobot technology to improve scanning, and users can create customizable folders for presets and favorite stations on their units.

The company will also be integrating IPTV into the system in the “near future.” Further software updates will also let users integrate the car stereo with premium music systems (I’m sure Rhapsody is eager to get on this bandwagon) and MP3 lockers.

Not really sure why this unit says “New Jersey” on it, but I’m sure it takes requests for anything off of Born to Run.

Obamas Pres Limo: Part Car, Part Tank, Part Tech Hub

Obama%27s%20Limo.jpgNow that we (almost) have a new President, all we need is a new presidential limo. The previous Commander-in-chief-mobile, which wheeled the Bush clan around, will retire along with the outgoing administration. Taking its place will be a brand-new Cadillac stretch, which CNN refers to as “part car, part truck and, from the looks of it, part tank.”

As expected, this Caddy is aptly armored, protecting its valued occupant-elect with 8-inch-thick doors and ballistic glass windows. Secret Service agent Joe Funk (whose name is probably not Joe Funk), President Bill Clinton’s former driver, says that the incoming President will be totally isolated from the outside world once inside the vehicle.

“At the same time, I think he will be surprised at the communication capabilities, how the phones, the satellites, the Internet — everything is at his fingertips,” Funk said. “So at one end, you are totally removed from society. The other side of the coin is that he can have any communications worldwide at a moment’s touch.”

But don’t expect this behemoth to get good mileage. Though the official specs are most likely classified, this bunker on wheels is expected to weigh more than a full-size SUV. The car is also a Cadillac in name only: According to Funk, the vehicle is totally modified and the only original parts remaining are the hop caps and the Cadillac insignia on the steering wheel. The limo is said to be ready for the Inauguration on January 20. Until then check out the video after the jump for more.

Toyota Developing Solar Car: Report

Toyota_1X_AutoblogGreen_1.jpg

Toyota Motor Corp. is secretly developing a solar-powered vehicle as an alternative to its popular hybrid Prius and Camry models, the Associated Press is reporting.

Toyota, which also builds luxury-themed Lexus cars, is developing the program in two stages. First, the automaker is working on a method to power a car partially from built-in solar cells, and then recharged via electricity generated from solar panels on the roofs of homes, according to The Nikkei, a leading business daily in Japan. Later, the next step will be to develop a version that’s totally powered by solar cells mounted on the car. In both cases, production models are still years away.

Today, Toyota uses solar panels at its central Japan plant to produce some electricity, according to the article. “The solar panels on the roofs add up in size to the equivalent of 60 tennis courts and produce enough electricity to power 500 homes,” Toyota said in a statement. “That reduces 740 tons a year of carbon dioxide emissions and is equal to using 1,500 barrels of crude oil.” (Image credit: AutoblogGreen)

Biofuel Station Opens ZENN Dealership

Zenn_EV_Cars.jpg

Diversity can be key to small business sales figures, but this is certainly a new one: the Green Station, a biofuel refueling stop in Santa Cruz, Calif., has now opened a ZENN electric car dealership on the premises, according to AutoblogGreen.

Station co-owner Bill LeBon said in the report that NEVs (Neighborhood Electric Vehicles) like the ZENN can be the “perfect car to do 90 percent of your driving in.” The problem with NEVs like the ZENN is top speed and range—they’re usually limited to just 25 mph. Not only are they illegal to drive on the highway, but they also present a problem even within city limits on roads with 30 mph and 40 mph speed limits.

At any rate, LeBon believes that by beginning to sell ZENN cars now, he’ll be prepared to offer the $30,000, more practical cityZENN EV as soon as it’s available. The current target date for that car is the fall of 2009; ZAP and other electric car manufacturers are waiting on the development of a capacitator that can help bump the top speed to 80 mph and greatly reduce charging time.

Nextar Launches Bluetooth Car Kits

Nextar_NXBT-002.jpg

Nextar has announced the NXBT-001 and NXBT-002, two solar Bluetooth hands-free car kits designed for use when clipped to a sun visor. They recharge in standby mode without having to plug them into a DC power socket.

The NXBT-001 is a bit ungainly looking but offer up to 250 hours of standby time and 10 hours of talk time when fully charged. It includes a LED signal display, and supports A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) and AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile) Bluetooth profiles.

The smaller, sleeker NXBT-002 (pictured) offers 150 hours of standby time and up to six hours of talk time, but includes a backlit LCD display and caller ID. Both units will debut at CES next week and hit retailer shelves in the spring, with MSRPs of $59.99 (NXBT-001) and $69.99 (NXBT-002), respectively.

Google Streetview Catches Porsche Prototypes

Google_Street_View_Porsche.jpg

Whenever an automaker develops a new model, it tests it on both private tracks and public roads. The latter case exposes the company to spy photographers, who can have a field day while snapping blurry shots of heavily disguised (or not-so-heavily-disguised) prototypes, as company engineers are caught unawares—much to the chagrin of the automaker in question. Now car companies have a new enemy: Google.

Since Google deployed Street View a few years ago, the company’s mapping teams have caught all manner of questionable things happening in various photos—many of which become viral hits on the Internet once discovered. Recently Garage419, while looking for places to drive in Colorado, found photographs of several facelifted Porsche prototypes under testing.

The photos included mildly refreshed Boxsters, Caymans, and even a 911 Carrera. It’s tough to make out many details, but regardless, it looks like automakers have to be even more careful than before. (Via Autoblog)
