GM partners with ABB to create backup power storage units with old Volt batteries

One of the biggest concerns many automotive manufacturers has with electric vehicles, and hybrids is what to do with the batteries once they are no longer appropriate for automotive use. General Motors has been conducting an investigation into what to do with the batteries from its Chevrolet Volt extended range electric vehicle once those batteries are removed from the vehicles. GM announced a partnership with ABB today to reuse those Volt batteries.

ABB and GM will repackage five used Volt batteries into a modular unit capable of providing two hours of electricity to 3 to 5 average American homes in the event of a power outage. The uninterruptible power supply and power balancing system was demonstrated during GM’s Electrification Experience recently. The prototype unit provides 20 kW of power and 50 kWh of energy to power off support lighting and audiovisual equipment used for the event.

During the GM event, the energy storage system was run in its remote power backup mode providing 100% of the power for the facility. The power from the battery packs was ran through the ABB Energy Storage Inverter system. GM and ABB say that similar application could be used to power a group of homes or small commercial buildings during a power outage.

The system is designed to allow for the storage of power during inexpensive periods for use during more expensive times of peak demand. Battery packs can also be used to make up for gaps in production from solar, wind, or other renewable power generation systems. There is no indication of exactly how much this uninterruptible power supply using five batteries would cost or when it would be available at this time.

Toyota recalls another 2.8 million cars due to steering and water pump issues

I’m beginning to wonder what exactly is going on with Toyota. It seems like every time we turn around Toyota is issuing a new recall covering hundreds of thousands of its vehicles for one fault or another. Today Toyota has issued a recall on another 2.8 million cars.

The recall covers some of the automakers most popular (and boring) vehicles, including the Avensis, Corolla, and Prius. The recall covers about 75,000 cars in the UK, 496,000 across Europe, 670,000 in the United States, and 1.5 million vehicles in Japan.

The problems that forced the latest round of recalls for Toyota have to do with faulty steering systems and water pumps. Toyota says that it has not received any reports of crashes or injuries resulting from faults. On the steering problem, Toyota says that the issue was caused by “insufficient hardness” of the steering shaft, which could deform if the wheel was turned forcefully at slow speed.

The water pump issue is known to affect some Prius models. This fault could cause a fuse in the electric power circuit to blow, causing the vehicle to stall. Toyota says that most issues involved with the recalls can be fixed within an hour and a half at the dealership. Issues with the recall will be fixed at no cost to vehicle owners.

McLaren to supply EV groundwork for Formula E cars, take pro racing electric

McLaren to supply EV groundwork for Formula E cars, take racing electric

McLaren isn’t a brand that most would associate with eco-friendly motoring. That very nearly makes it a surprise to see the supercar builder throw itself wholeheartedly into performance EVs with a new deal for Formula E racing: it’s supplying all the motors, electronics and transmissions for Spark Racing Technology-made cars to be used in the pure-electric league’s inaugural 2014 season. Full technical details await, but the championship’s choice of noise-sensitive urban racetracks guarantees that we won’t hear attempts to recreate an F1 engine’s high-RPM buzz anytime soon — we’re more likely to hear the tire noise. We’ll deal with any lost romanticism if it means giving Formula E, and performance EVs, a healthy dose of credibility.

Apple exec Eddy Cue joins Ferrari board of directors, raises hopes for truly high-tech exotic cars

Apple exec Eddy Cue joins Ferrari board of directors, raises hopes of highertech exotics

Ferrari loves to extol the advances found in its drivetrains, but the unspoken rule is that its interior technology leaves something to be desired; unless you’re thinking of a 458’s manettino, even a less expensive car like the Tesla Model S is virtually in another league. The automaker may be narrowing that gap by putting Apple online lead Eddy Cue on the Ferrari board of directors. Without giving too much away, Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo points to Cue’s experience with the “dynamic, innovative world of the internet” as the motivation — as good a sign as any that the Maranello team wants to take connected cars seriously. Whenever the Apple Senior VP’s experience comes into full effect, we may see one of the few supercar lineups whose cabins are as advanced as the engines. Just don’t look for any tight integration with Ferrari-badged Acer gear in the near future.

Ford and Microsoft celebrate 5 millionth Sync equipped vehicle

Ford has been integrating voice control technology into its vehicles for years. The voice control technology was made in cooperation with Microsoft and is called Sync. Ford and Microsoft are celebrating five years of Sync availability and the 5 millionth vehicle to roll off the assembly line featuring Sync.

The collaboration between Ford and Microsoft began in 2005. Ford says that with its partner for software, Microsoft, it was able to turn the car into a platform with opportunities for developers to work with Ford to add value and features in the vehicle to support mobile phones and other devices. One of the key features of Ford Sync is the system’s ability to be upgraded allowing new features, and at times fixes, to be applied to the system.

Sync does many things for drivers, including supporting hands-free communication via Bluetooth technology with the smartphone. Sync is also tightly integrated to the vehicle controls allowing drivers to press a steering wheel mounted button and tell the car what radio station they want to listen to or the temperature to set the climate control system. Ford says that the ability to upgrade the system was important because a vehicle spends on average 10 years driving the roads where as mobile phones and electronics are upgraded every one to two years on average.

Sync was first announced at CES in January of 2007. The first Ford vehicle to come with available Sync was the 2008 Focus. The voice commands functionality of the system is powered by Nuance voice control technology. The Sync system continues to evolve and now allows drivers to control their smartphone and some apps using voice commands.

Cardrops Turns Your Car Trunk into a Mailbox for Your Convenience

I love getting mail and packages the old-fashioned way. There’s just something comforting about opening a letter to read it rather than just having to click an e-mail to display the contents.

Like most people, I have a job, so I can’t always be home to answer the door when my packages get here. I’m sure you’ve had similar experiences where you got home to find a note that USPS or FedEx tried to deliver your package earlier but couldn’t because no one was home. So how would you like to have your packages delivered to your car instead?

Cardrops

Sounds like a strange concept, but that’s what Cardrops is trying to do in Europe. It’s a start-up from Belgium, and while they aren’t taking any deliveries yet, they’re planning to open up their service very, very soon.

Here’s how Cardrops works: when you shop online, select ‘Cardrops’ as the shipment method. When you’re at work (or out partying,) Cardrops’ delivery partners will locate your car and drop off your package in the trunk. You’ll then get an SMS that your package has already been delivered.

A service man will install the Cardrops starter kit in your car. This unit will ping the GPS coordinates of the car when it hasn’t moved for 15 minutes. Based on this data, our system can create a heat map of the exact locations where your car is mostly parked.

Cardrops1

You’ll need to buy a starter kit priced at €99 (~$130 USD) and pay €4.95 (~$7) for every delivery with the basic Rockstar plan. If you do a lot of online shopping and expect packages every week, then you can opt to subscribe to the Royal plan that waives the starter kit fee but charges €24.95 (~$33) monthly.

Sounds pretty neat, but I’m still 50-50 on whether this will take off or not. What do you think?

Kia Unveils Four New Justice League Superhero Themed Vehicles

A few weeks back we mentioned a customized Kia Optima SX Limited done in partnership between Kia and DC Entertainment in a Batman theme. I don’t think a billionaire/playboy/superhero would be seen cruising around in a Kia personally. Still the Batman car was pretty cool.

kia justice

Kia has now unveiled four more super hero themed customized cars at SEMA 2012. The other four cars are styled after other core members of the Justice League include the Flash Forte Koup, Aquaman Rio 5-door, Cyborg Forte 5-door, and Green Lantern Soul. All four of the new cars have customized exteriors with cues from the superheroes outfits as well as customized interiors.

aquaman car

Most of the cars were done in cooperation with West Coast Customs, with help from RIDES and Super Street for others. All five customized superhero vehicles are on display in Las Vegas right now. I guess this will reveal my comic book ineptitude – but I’ve never even heard of Cyborg. I hear there’s a Wonder Woman car somewhere in that picture parked next to her jet. I can totally imagine Doctor Sheldon Cooper cruising the streets in the Flash Forte Koupe, even though he doesn’t like to drive.

Fujitsu Develops World’s First Super-Wide-Angle 3D Laser Radar with a Horizontal and Vertical Range of 140 Degrees

Fujitsu Laboratories Limited today announced that it has developed a super-wide-angle 3D laser radar with more than double the range (140 degrees both horizontally and vertically) of conventional radars.
Ultrasonic wave sensors are already in commercial use in systems that support vehicle parking, for example, to assist drivers when the car is backing into a parking space. However, the detection range is narrow, and multiple sensors were required to widen the area of visibility around a car. …

Porsche 918 Spyder pricing leaks (even the rich moan)

I think we can all agree that no one expected the Porsche 918 Spyder supercar to be cheap, but did anyone expect it to be OMG WTF expensive? Pricing for the car had been rumored in the $600,000-$800,000 price range from the get-go, which already puts it out of the reach of us normal folk. Pricing has leaked in Europe that shows the car will be even more expensive than believed.

According to the leaked pricing, the car will start at €768,026, which works out to $995,976 in the US. If you opt for something called the Weissach Package, pricing starts at €839,426 or about $1,088,567. That pricing certainly guarantees that only the mega rich will ever get to see the inside of a 918 Spyder.

It’s only the base price the vehicle that’s crazy expensive though, pricing for optional equipment is just insane. The 918 has an option for magnesium wheels costing €29,750 or about $38,500 in the US. The quick charger option will cost another €20,230 or $26,234.

The most expensive option is some sort of special liquid metal paint starting at €47,600. That works out to $61,727 for a special paint color. It’s hard to believe that the paint on your Porsche costs more than a Corvette.
