Chrysler taps Sprint for new version of Uconnect incar data, wants alwayson internet that's handsoff video

Interior technology is increasingly the main battlefield for automotive giants. We shouldn’t be surprised, then, that Chrysler is bringing in some bigger guns for its Uconnect service through a team-up with Sprint. The carrier will integrate its cellular data into a Uconnect Access system where the source of pride is precisely how little Chrysler drivers will need to touch it: the two want voice commands that cut down the amount of involvement needed to plot a new course, change the music input or send a text message. Smartphones also get much more of a say in the matter this time around, providing remote control to open and ready the car before owners even set a foot inside. WiFi hotspot support carries on as well. Just be aware that you’ll have to go big or go home to get an early taste of the new Uconnect — it’s available only in the 2013 model years of the Ram 1500 and SRT Viper for now, neither of which is especially gentle on the pocketbook.

Update: It looks like the 2013 Dodge Dart R/T will also get the Uconnect goodies, which Sprint’s press release neglected to mention. [Thanks, Nathan]

Nissan’s e-NV200 all-electric van earmarked for a London taxi makeover

Nissan's e-NV200 all-electric van earmarked for a London taxi makeover

Buried within an announcement from Nissan about its NV200 diesel compact van hitting the London streets, the company has also outed its plans to trial the all-electric variant for ferrying people around the city. The e-NV200 went from concept to reality earlier this year, shortly after the diesel version got a New York paint job and was branded the “Taxi of Tomorrow.” The NV200 has satisfied all legal requirements and is set to challenge the iconic London black cab with its lower emissions, greater efficiency and, of course, competitive pricing. The e-NV200 prototype (not to be confused with the soon-to-be certified diesel version) is scheduled for testing in London during 2013. However, Nissan does note that rolling out the EV would only be realistic if there’s “increasing investment in charging infrastructure” across the capital.

New EU legislation requires cars to include autonomous braking system

New EU legislation requires cars to include autonymous braking system

While we’re still a long way from living the fully autonomous car dream, baby steps are being taken. The EU evidently shares this dream, and has passed regulations that will require new cars to have emergency self-braking systems (known as autonomous emergency braking, or AEB) if they want to achieve a five-star safety rating. The systems can use radar, laser or video to detect when obstructions or pedestrians are present, and a recent study suggests that the technology reduces accidents by up to 27 percent. Commercial vehicles will have to sport the systems from November next year, and everything else from 2014. Safety aside, we’re thinking that anything that can help prevent rear-ending our new ride, is definitely a welcome addition.

Texas man foretells dire outcome: messages ‘I need to quit texting,’ before driving into ravine

Texas man foretells dire outcome messages 'I need to quit texting,' before driving into ravine

Despite our love of gadgets, we’re not willing to give any slack to people that text while driving, and for one good reason: it’s freaking dangerous. You’ve heard the grim stories before, but few incidents resonate to the heart of the matter like that of Chance Bothe from Texas. Despite his better judgment, the young man was texting a childhood friend while trying to bring the conversation to a close by saying, “I need to quit texting, because I could die in a car accident.” That message was followed by one more, an unfortunate, “b right there.” Regrettably, that final text caused him to miss a slight curve in the road and careen into a ravine. Chance is alive today — thanks in large part to the fact that the accident was witnessed — but the recovery hasn’t been easy. In addition to a broken neck, a number of fractures and severe head trauma, he’s already undergone two facial reconstructions. In the wake of the accident, Chance’s friends and family have founded UnSend, an organization that dedicates itself to raising awareness about the dangers of texting and driving. Chance, too, is using his experience to educate others: “They just need to understand, don’t do it. Don’t do it. It’s not worth losing your life.”

Mercedes-Benz said to be exploring SLS AMG E-Cell in roadster guise

MercedesBenz said to be exploring SLS ECell in roadster guise

Mercedes-Benz has already committed to bringing the SLS AMG E-Cell gullwing to dealers in 2013, but we’d advise holding back on taking out a second mortgage to pay for it until you’re done reading. The Netherlands’ De Telegraaf hears from an unnamed spokesperson that there’s enough interest to make a roadster version of the EV supercar. What action the automaker takes depends on sales of the hardtop: if it’s clear more people want an open-air experience, that’s what will happen. The electric motor layout is easily transferred to a roadster, the representative says. If that E-Cell variant becomes a reality, Audi might want to hurry up and build a production-grade e-tron Spyder before Mercedes claims all of the (very niche) German electric roadster market for itself.

Mavizon Mavia tracker reaches pre-order at last, makes best friends of cars and iPhones

Mavizon Mavia reaches preorder at last, tracks cars by desktop and iPhone

Remember Mavizon’s plans for its Mavia car tracking device (formerly the AutoBot) from almost two years ago? The company promised availability sometime in 2012, and we’re here in earnest with the car companion ready for pre-order. The business model has changed significantly since 2010, however. It’s a cheaper $169 up front for the Bluetooth cellular OBD-II peripheral — $99 for the first hundred through the gates, or $299 for a two-pack — but the full tracking service will cost $5 a month, or $49 every year. Those who do make the leap can get a look at their car’s vital signs as well as set up geofenced notifications, track long-term performance and receive impromptu driving directions to a friend’s coffee shop check-in. The first batch of Mavia units should arrive within several weeks, we’re told, and should have both browser- as well as iPhone-based apps waiting in the wings.

LEGO Low Rider Gets Its Bounce on

I’ve seen plenty of LEGO cars and trucks over the years. I always appreciate attention to detail when it comes to building a vehicle out of LEGO blocks. A guy named Alex Jones (aka OrionPax) has created an awesome LEGO low rider that looks like it’s straight out of a Cheech and Chong movie. The car is called “The Hob” and has tons of features that you can’t see in the photograph.

The car has fully functional (simulated) hydraulics, working lights, RC hardware, chrome, and has an integrated MP3 player with a speaker. That means you can play Low Rider by War as you cruise The Hob around your living room on three wheels.

You have to check out the video of The Hob to see what it can do for yourself. I wonder how the builder designed the motion system to make the car move around. It appears to be constructed completely out of LEGO down to the frame rails.

Check out more images of The Hob over on OrionPax’s website.

GM testing pedestrian detection system powered by WiFi Direct (video)

GM testing pedestrian detection system powered by WiFi Direct

Car makers have been peddling wireless pedestrian avoidance systems almost as long as there have been automobiles. (We believe one of the earliest was called the “side view mirror.”) GM’s new experiment though, differs from other implementations by skipping out on the 3G, cameras and radar — instead going for a model built around WiFi Direct. The peer-to-peer 802.11 standard hasn’t exactly set the world on fire, but the WiFi Alliance is diligently tweaking the platform and apparently GM thinks its a perfect match for connecting cars, cyclists and pedestrians to each other. Unlike 3G-based systems, there’s little lag between locating and identifying bikes or people crossing the street since the signal doesn’t have to be bounced off a satellite. It also has a leg up on radar detection since WiFi can be a two way pipeline — alerting someone out for a stroll of an oncoming vehicle. Of course, it will be some time before anything like this actually makes it into a production vehicle. But, in the meantime, you can check out the PR and video after the break.

BMW i Flagship Store opened in London with full showroom

This week if you’re anywhere near the greater London area you’re going to want to head on down to BMW’s brand new Flagship i Store. This lovely viewing room of a store contains nothing less than the i3 city car and the i8 hybrid grand tourer as well. Though the i3 isn’t due to come out until next year and the i4 wont be available until 2014, BMW is using the massive opportunity that is the 2012 Summer Olympics to gain massive views on their next-level wares through the next few weeks at least.

It’s the BMW i3 that will likely get the most attention in the weeks ahead as it nears reality for the lucky few who will pick one up. This lovely beast has a near identical look to it when compared to the Frankfurt Motor Show showing of the vehicle on the outside while the innards have gone through some substantial changes indeed. BMW notes that all of the materials used in the cabin of the i3, eucalyptus to leather, come from sustainable outlets making this as “green” as they want to market it as.

Along with the i vehicle lineup BMW is bringing on some cool new smaller products to the in-store stage. One of these units is the Pedelec electric scooter that’s got power enough for 30 miles on one charge. Another product in the store is BMW’s own i Wallbox, made specifically for i range electric products. In addition to the store, BMW is planning a “Born Electric” tour of product showings starting in Rome, heading up and over to Japan, moving through the USA, and ending up in London in 2013.

Stay tuned for BMW’s electric wave as it sweeps over us all!

One million dollar Jaguar C-X75 set for four-cylinder turbo and 500 horsepower

This week the folks at Jaguar are letting the car-loving world know that they mean business when it comes to limited-edition vehicles. The auto you’re seeing here is the Jaguar C-X75, part of an edition of 200 vehicles that’ll ring in at around $1 million USD each when they go up for sale. Each C-X75 will have four-cylinder turbo and more than 500 horsepower so you can beat up the streets in heavy style

This vehicle will debut late next year complete with a plug-in hybrid system along with a conventional internal combustion engine for good measure. The original concept for this vehicle featured a fabulous bit of jet-turbine technology while this near-final model is ready for a slightly more tried and true solution. That’s not to say that the vehicle isn’t unique, of course.

Inside this beast you’ll find more than 500 horsepower with a four-cylinder unit displacing just 1.6 liters. It’s also got an impressive bit of revving up with more than 10,000-rpm to its name if you’d like it to show you such a thing. Supercharging, turbocharging, and direct fuel injection are also pieces of this muscular monster’s technology collection.

You’ll see multiple driving models produced inside the limited edition of 200, with all-electric and hybrid being one of these – but with no gas-only model on the books. In electric-only mode, this vehicle has been recorded as grabbing a range of 37 miles and hitting 0-60 miles her hour in less than 6 seconds.

With a combination of gas and electric modes, this vehicle has been recorded as getting 0-60 MPH in under 3 seconds, speeding along at over 200 MPH when at its fastest.

Good luck catching one of these rare machines in the next year – we’ll be keeping an eye or two out as well!
