Ferrari F150 details leak from private preview event

It’s no doubt a happy day for fans, who have long been teased by the barest glimpses of the Ferrari Enzo’s successor, codenamed the F150, which has been seen in bits and pieces, sometimes cobbled together, but nothing of the entire car – until today. A private showing event has lead to some detail leaks, including that only 499 card will be made.

Ferrari-Enzo-Replacement-spy-photo-104-626x382

Likewise, the limited run of cars will be available in only three colors. The seats will be molded into it and fixed into place, with adjustable pedals instead to deal with different driver heights. Although not mentioned, as Car and Driver noted, the steering wheel will probably be adjustable as well, so that the fixed seats won’t be a big deal.

The Ferrari F150 will feature a hybrid V12 powertrain, producing a whopping 800 horsepower, with an extra punch of 150 horsepower with the KERS electric-boost system onboard. It’s said the F150 will have a neck-snapping 0-to-62mph time of only 3 seconds, reaching 124mph in seven seconds and topping out at 230mph.

The Geneva Motor Show is coming up, and there’s a chance we could see it revealed there. According to rumors, this will be the fastest Ferrari to hit the Fiorano test track. Of course, this information is subject to change, and might not be correct, as it is coming from individuals who are said to have attended the events, not from any official source.

Toyota announces FR-S Roadster and i-ROAD tandem seater concepts

Toyota has unveiled two concepts it has prepared for the Geneva Motor Show, one of which is a rather strange-looking top shot of a tandem two-seater called the i-ROAD. The other is a concept of the FT-86 Open, shown in the appealing sketch below. You can check out the concept image of the i-ROAD tandem vehicle after the jump.

First up is the FT-86 Open, which, according to the announcement, is a “possible future development” of the GT-86 coupe, award-winner and all-around awesome sportscar. Toyota will be using the Geneva Motor Show to see how the viewing public reacts to the concept, although it is already performing tests on a prototype version.

2013_GMS_i_Road-626x442

Next up is the i-ROAD is a personal car concept specifically designed for urban environments. It has two seats in tandem, is emissions-free, and is supposed to be “quick and efficient.” The only shot available shows the concept from the top, with its covered back wheels and thin, jutting front wheels. Toyota didn’t have much to say about the i-ROAD.

Also announced in the press release is plans to reveal the Auris Touring Sports at the Geneva Motor Show. The Auris is production ready, and has already made an appearance (estate version) at the Paris Motor Show in 2012. The details will be given at Geneva, including the car’s performance data, dimensions, and its complete spec list. The car will be available for purchase later on in 2013.

KIA Cross GT concept crossover teased

This week at the 2013 Chicago Auto show the next generation of KIA crossover vehicles has been revealed in a teaser image. This image shows a Cross GT concept vehicle with just a few details being revealed, most of them inside smooth lines and a laid-back feel. This vehicle has been tipped as a lovely Urban Vehicle with two-door action and next-generation innards – this we can guess while details involved are quite scant at the moment.

original

Another interesting choice by KIA here is the treatment of the photo – or concept drawing, shall we say. Here we’ve got a set of extremely simple yet stark colors that push against one another to create an illustrated look. In fact what is happening is that this Urban Vehicle is being masked as much as possible without losing the interest of the viewer – and the interest is what we’ve got!

This machine will likely be revealed within the next few weeks at least in part while the details this week stay in the “non-existent” category. The KIA Cross GT is shown here with emphasis placed on the “cool” factor while the forward-facing appeal. This Cross GT is being tipped as coming in at a larger size than the Sorento crossover revealed previously, this being suggested by Motor Authority to leave room for three rows of seating – we shall see!

Have a peek in the timeline below for several entries in our massive Car hub, each of them blasting forth from KIA itself. We’ve had several test drives of future vehicle releases very recently with our man Cory Gunther taking the wheel down in Arizona with the new 2014 KIA Forte as well as the 2014 KIA Sorento – have a peek! The CL, SLS, CLS, R, M, and smart models all experienced lower sales this January than last, with the rest seeing a boost – some of them by thousands of vehicles. Breaking the numbers down, the SL-Class experienced a 290-percent increase over last year, followed by the S-Class at 19.5-percent, the Sprinter at 16.6-percent, and the C-Class at 10.6-percent.

Mercedes-Benz USA saw a total of 1,054 diesel models sold, as well as 8,159 through its Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned program, a jump of over 17-percent over its January 2012 sales. Recently, the company unveiled its CLA four-door coupe, which is the launch of a new segment. The model is set to hit showrooms in April.

Mercedes-Benz USA President and CEO Steve Cannon offered this statement. “We’ve set another record this January and are breaking into 2013 at a strong sales pace. It’s a historic time for the brand with product milestones that will drive our momentum. Our new CLA, the star of our Super Bowl ad this weekend, will reset the entry point. Stay tuned as product innovations continue throughout the year with the introductions of our completely redesigned E-Class and new generation of our flagship S-Class.”

Honda has 2013 Accord to thank for boost in sales

Honda‘s executives have a reason to smile this evening, as it seems the 2013 Accord is a hit. The company has the Accord to thank for a 12.7% boost in sales from the month before, which is certainly something to get excited about if you happen to be one of the people in charge at Honda. Even more exciting is that Accord sales rose a whopping 75.2% over sales from the same month a year prior.

2013Accord

That’s not bad at all, and Honda seems to have struck gold with the 2013 Accord. Other cars, like the Pilot SUV and the Crosstour, saw sales grow too (a 38.2% increase over a year ago for the Crosstour), but none of them were able to top the growth of the Accord. Things were looking pretty good for Honda’s Acura division too, as the RDX set sales records once again last month, and the MDX retained its position as Acura’s top-selling model.

This isn’t the first time today we’ve been talking about the Accord. Honda announced earlier today that it will be offering Siri Eyes Free technology in the 2013 Accord along with the Acura RDX and ILX. Siri Eyes Free will obviously help drivers keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel, which is important given the recent cut down on distracted driving coming from the government.

With the announcement of Siri Eyes Free and now the excellent sales report, it seems that Honda is off to a pretty good start in 2013. It’ll be interesting to see where 2013 Accord sales go from here now that Siri Eyes Free has been announced, if the feature has any sway on sales at all. Stay tuned.

2014 KIA Sorento test drive: luxury inside and out

With the new 2014 KIA Sorento there’s more to it than meets the eye. At first glance you’d think the 2014 model is the same as its predecessor, but after a closer inspection you’ll notice plenty of improvements. They’ve added a touch of class and luxury inside and out, updated the entire interior with a contemporary and “with the times” design, and even added an AWD option. Read on for our full thoughts and plenty of pictures from our KIA Sorento first drive.

main

With eye-catching styling, more chrome and less plastic, and a price point that surely will give you plenty of bang for your buck the new and improved 2014 KIA Sorento delivers quite the package. In case you missed it, this week we had the opportunity to enjoy some time with KIA down in Scottsdale, AZ, for their KIA First Drive event, and below is plenty of thoughts from their new Sorento.

Design

As far as styling and design at first glance you won’t notice too many differences, but most of the changes come under the skin and hood. However, KIA did manage to give the Sorento a “mid-life” facelift or change-up. While it’s mostly unchanged you’ll get a beautiful European-inspired design like the original with a few key differences. They’ve completely improved and redesigned both the front and rear fascia.

20130129_123311

While the sides and most of the body remains the same, it’s the front and rear bumpers that have been completely changed and redesigned. The pumper has been tweaked and improved, they’ve cut down on the cheap looking plastics and replaced them all with Chrome, and it now comes with trims including HID (High-Intensity) headlights and taillights, with LED daytime running light options too. The black plastics around the wheel frames have been removed to really give it a classy crossover look and feel.

With a new AWD and 19-inch alloy wheels option the KIA Sorento just keeps getting better and better. While their base model fits the same pricing strategy as the previous model, their new SX-L can push you all the way into $40k territory thanks to all the additional options, luxury, or bells and whistles. Some of those options include: AWD, Chrome tailpipe, power-folding side mirrors (heated), chrome roof rail racks, and more regarding the interior which we’ll cover below. They’ve really stepped up their game to offer everything from start to finish. The backup camera and detection comes standard, but the optional side blind-spot protection (with chime, pictured below) can also be had and was quite useful.

20130129_110256

Overall there really isn’t much to say regarding the design for 2014 aside from the changes to the bumper and interior, which we’ll talk more on below. The HID light options, daytime running lights, and slight taillight changes surely gives the 2014 model a different look, but most won’t notice them over the previous model. The Sorento has been popular and a hot seller in the US, and this fancier model to ring in the new year will only build on KIA’s success.

Interior and options

We mentioned the exterior didn’t have too many changes, but under the hood and skin is where KIA put forth tons of effort. The inside has everything you’d ever want, and need. KIA actually went as far as to say 80% of the interior was either changed or completely redesigned, and it certainly shows. From leather everything should you choose, panorama sunroof and more they’ve brought the heat to the Sorento. This is where price meets luxury. To continue on with the optional trims here’s some more additional choices. Integrated navigation and Google Maps to the 8-inch UVO infotainment system, an Infinity 10-speaker surround sound kit, full panorama sunroof with automatic power-shade and more. We then can’t forget about the power liftgate with adjustable height settings, 4-way power seats (even for second row) heated and cooled seats, ventilated seats (2nd row too), and finally a 3rd-row 50/50 split-folding seats choice. Did we mention the driver seat has memory foam, memory for position and even will adjust all the mirrors to the driver. Pretty neat right?

Some noteworthy upgrades is the addition of 3rd row seating getting a few extra inches, 10 speaker surround, AWD, and is just the right size (and price) for families. As far as the center console goes we have a redesigned and more comfortable layout, and the 8-inch TFT UVO system is dramatically improved. We’ll talk more on that below. They’ve added an optional 7-inch full digital display for the gauge cluster too. Something many will be happy to see.

KIA-SORENTO-2500

Everything you’d expect to see from a fully loaded vehicle is present here. All the steering wheel controls are present and wonderful, that includes full controls for the entire infotainment system, and even the optional digital gauge cluster behind the steering wheel. Then you obviously get Bluetooth, satellite radio options and everything that UVO has to offer.

KIA promises extra space for both the second and third row seating, although that was minimal. The optional heated seats for the second row was nice, but be careful as a child might kick that floor mounted button and quickly complain of the heat. In the end we were very impressed with the contemporary and elegant interior. It finally has the pristine condition and refinement the previous model was lacking. It isn’t all praise however. We still didn’t like the cheap plastic feeling doors (where your arm and elbow rests) and they could have improved on second and third row seating space a bit more. The panoramic sunroof does give passengers a more open and comfortable feeling. If KIA can continue to remove the cheap plastics with each generation this will surely be a top contender soon.

UVO Infotainment Center

The base LX model comes with a 4.3-inch display and backup camera, but after that any other model KIA’s impressive 8-inch TFT UVO 2.0 Infotainment system really comes to life. If you can manage, this is certainly worth the small bump in monthly payments. Being all about tech and gadgets here, this was a huge priority for us. We are happy to confirm the 8-inch display was one of the best we’ve seen to date in this price point, had extremely light glare issues, and the viewing angles were excellent. Being able to see everything clearly, even with the sun glaring through the panorama sunroof right on the display, it was still easy to read and made controlling it a breeze — and safe.

Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 10.38.02 AM

Again just like the KIA Forte, see our coverage here, being able to instantly sync our iPhone, Android phone, and even a Blackberry for audio streaming over Bluetooth was incredibly easy. No fumbling through settings or reading of manuals required. The average soccer mom might not get it as quick as we did, but it certainly is easier than most. KIA made sure to focus on quality of the technology inside their cars for 2014. They didn’t just add in electronics to add them. It’s technology we actually want and need.

“It’s not just about providing technology in their cars, it’s delivering technology that makes sense.” — KIA VP of Marketing

Being able to pass off navigation directions to the 7-inch digital speedo and gauge cluster was one of my favorite features. This left the 8-inch infotainment system free to stream audio and album artwork, or even enjoy a video while the cars in park. Using Bluetooth or the wired USB 2.0 option album artwork was displayed, and streaming Pandora radio was never easier. We mentioned the dash was redesigned, and this is to blend the 8-inch screen with regular controls for a seamless experience. Being able to quickly change from media, radio, navigation, maps, and more all with dedicated buttons under the 8-inch screen made daily use easy and simple to understand. While we love on-screen controls, having everything be on-screen can be distracting for drivers so we applaud KIA in this regard. We all want our smartphones to be integrated into our vehicle and the Sorento does that in a simple, effective, and safe way.

Engine & Performance

Starting with a underwhelming 2.4-liter GDI dual CVVT 4-cylinder engine on the base LX model, everything else comes in a standard 3.3-liter GDI V6 option pushing 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. This went up a decent 14 hp compared to the previous 3.5L V6. Options include a front, or all-wheel drive. The new 2014 Sorento is also offered with FlexSteer technology like the Forte. Using FlexSteer the driver can choose between Comfort, Normal and Sport tuning for the Sorento’s electric steering.

20130129_121241

The new Torque Vectoring Cornering Control technology was neat, allowing the car to direct power to the rear wheels for additional help during icy or slippery wet conditions. This is something you’ll want to make sure is included in your purchase. Having briefly drove the 2012 model, it’s safe to say the refinement to the entire chassis, stiffer platform and better shocks – not to mention FlexSteer – you’ll certainly enjoy driving this around town or to the kids little league football game.

Our tour throughout the Scottsdale, AZ, desert really showcased the improved and beefed up shock absorbers. Taking the corners were tight and accurate, although we’re certainly no experts in this field. Overall on the road for a mid-sized crossover the Sorento was surprisingly keen and comfortable. They’ve also placed a huge amount of effort on inside car noise, and that seemed minimal given our speeds in excess of 60 MPH.

Wrap-Up

At first you wouldn’t look at the new 2014 model and think much has changed, but with around 80% of the vehicle seeing changes from top to bottom this really is an all-new and improved Sorento. With keyless entry and start coming standard, backup cameras, 8-inch infotainment systems and an improved V6 offering the Sorento should continue right where it left off in terms of popularity in America.

20130129_105327

The base LX model will hit the streets priced around $24,100 and $25.7k for the V6, then reaching $35,000 for the SX, and the top spot comes in at $38k for the Sorento SX-Limited series. The new and improved faster, cleaner, meaner, and luxurious 2014 Sorento should arrive on dealer showrooms and grace buyers garages sometime in the next month.

Nissan plans to triple available electric vehicle fast chargers in Washington DC

Despite the fact that the United States government is pushing hard for drivers to adopt electric vehicles and hybrids, most drivers are sticking with traditional automobiles. One of the big reasons that many drivers are staying away from electric vehicles is because the charging infrastructure in the United States is still very poor in most areas. That means that electric vehicle drivers are stuck operating their cars only within range of their home or offices where they can plug-in.

nissan_leaf1-580x386

Nissan has announced it is teaming up with NRG Energy to try and triple the number of electric vehicle fast chargers in the Washington DC area. Nissan plans to install at least 500 quick charging stations in the area over the next 18 months. Nissan and its partners estimate that right now 160 fast chargers are available for public use across the United States.

Nissan says that there are no fast chargers available for public use in Washington DC. Adding more fast chargers in the Washington DC area will allow drivers to increase how much they drive their electric vehicles according to Nissan. Nissan plans to install fast chargers including a network of 40 eVgo Freedom Station sites across the city.

Each of those sites will have a Nissan fast charger able to provide EVs like the LEAF with an 80% charge in under 30 min, it’s unclear if the charters will support only Nissan EVs. Nissan says that it currently operates fast charger networks in Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and other locations around the country. Nissan’s plan will cost approximately $150 million.

Chrysler unveils 2013 Mopar Dodge Dart

If I’m being honest, I’ve never found the Dodge Dart to be an appealing car. It lacks the performance I want to see in a sports car and the looks were boring enough that you can pretty much guarantee I pay no attention when I see them on the street. Chrysler has unveiled a new 2013 Mopar Dodge Dart that I do rather like.

CHRYSLER GROUP LLC MOPAR '13 DART

This will be a very limited edition vehicle with only 500 numbered units to be constructed at the assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois. Chrysler has promised more details the vehicle will go live today, but those details are missing as yet. What we do know is that the Mopar Dart will be customized with a number of Mopar performance parts and accessories.

In the teaser photo here, the car actually looks very good, I would totally drive that and that is the first time I can say that about a Dodge Dart. Dodge says that the Mopar Dart is designed for the driving enthusiast. The 500 vehicles will be powered by a 1.4-liter Multiair intercooled turbocharged engine with a manual transmission. The cars will all be offered in black with car length Mopar Blue stripes.

The vehicles get improved handling thanks to a performance steering gear calibration, suspension that is 7 mm lower than normal, and 225/40-R18 tires. The cars will also get a premium brake kit with slotted rotors, a performance tuned exhaust, and a Mopar ground effects kit. Inside the car will be custom Mopar Blue leather seating with black accents and a serialized badge on the dash. The car also gets wireless smartphone charging and an 8.4-inch navigation screen among other details. Pricing on these limited edition vehicles is unknown.

Mercedes unveils C63 AMG Edition 507

Mercedes-Benz unveiled a new luxury sports car called the C63 AMG Edition 507. The new AMG massaged Mercedes-Benz luxury car has an impressively potent 6.3 L V-8 engine with 56 additional horsepower compared to the standard C63 AMG. The V-8 engine under the hood of the Edition 507 produces 507 hp and 450 pound-foot of torque.

cg3-amg-507

Mercedes says that this new edition of the C63 AMG utilizes a lot of the same technology as the incredibly expensive SLS AMG. That means that the eight-cylinder engine has forged pistons, forged connecting rods, and lightweight crankshaft. The Edition 507 also has a high-performance braking system with red brake calipers standard.

The high-performance sports car will be available in the summer of 2013 and promises to hit 60 mph in only 4.1 seconds from standstill. That makes the car 3/10 of a second faster to 60 mph than the standard C63 producing 451 hp. It’s also faster than the AMG Development Package edition by 2/10 of a second.

The Edition 507 has a top speed increased to 174 mph and comes with Doctor for driver training session at the AMG Driving Academy. The vehicle will be offered in both sedan and coupe forms with identical performance. The car will offer three different equipment and options available on the inside varying from light leather with black trim to black leather with light trim. Mercedes says pricing for the vehicle will be announced closer to launch.
