Audi Canada Creates An iPad-Controlled Slot Car Test Track With Real-Time Video From The Cockpit

Audi_QuattroExperience_iPadControl

Generally speaking, I don’t care much about cars, but Audi Canada, together with Toronto-based ad agency Zulu Alpha Kilo and Slot Mods USA have managed to use cars in a way that piqued my interest. The documentary above tells the story of how Audi Canada partnered with the slot racing company to build 1/32 scale Quattro models, as well as a detailed test track for those cars to drive. The best part? Users can hop on iPads to steer the cars, and get a driver-perspective point of view of the RC cars in action in real time.

The craftsmanship of the track itself is impressive enough, as is the effort put into making the scale models of the Audi cars, but the coolest part for me is the way they rigged the vehicles to not only be controlled by iPads, but also to deliver back to those devices a real-time view of the track as it’s being driven. If there’s one thing that’s disappointing in the video, it’s that they gloss over the technical details of how the router setup and video streaming actually works, presumably in the interest of not boring their audience. Personally, I wouldn’t mind a little less about painting trees and a little more about the technical backend. But if you’re looking for grittier technical info, rather than a look at a polished finished product, check out this similar project put together by Portugese hardware hackers.

This thing is actually playable, if you happen to be in Toronto, and it looks like it should feel a bit more real than even a Gran Turismo in action. One suggestion: Arcades could experience a renaissance if they invested in more things like this. I’m hoping for a kaiju/giant robot fighting game crafted with the same attention to detail myself.

Chevrolet shows off 2014 Corvette all-digital instrument panel

Before the 2014 Corvette C7 was officially announced earlier this week, we got a very short glimpse of the all-digital instrument panel back in November, thanks to a teaser trailer about the new car. From just the split-second look that we had, we could tell that the gauge cluster was going to be fantastic, and it looks like that’s actually very true.

Screen Shot 2013-01-16 at 9.49.03 AM

Autoblog ended up getting a much closer look at the new instrument panel in the 2014 Corvette at NAIAS 2013, and it’s about as stunning as you’d expect. You’re essentially looking at an 8-inch “high-resolution” display that’s fully reconfigurable, and it has three modes that you can scroll through.

Sport Mode features one large, central tachometer, and you can configure it to show different types of information, like G-forces, tire pressure, oil pressure, etc. Race Mode gives you a bar graph tachometer that’s meant for it to be easily read out of the corner of your eye to make sure that drivers keep their eyes on the racetrack. Touring Mode allows drivers to push the tachometer off to the side a bit and make room for infotainment information or navigation information.

Off to the sides of the 8-inch display are regular instrument clusters. Off to the left is the speedometer, which maxes out at 200mph, and then off the right side, is what appears to be the fuel gauge and the oil pressure gauge, both of which are slightly blocked by the steering wheel, so we’re not 100% sure, but this photo from Car and Driver gives an unobstructed view of the instrument panel.

2013 Shelby Focus ST debuts at the North American International Auto Show

We’ve see a lot of interesting cars announced during the 2013 North American International Auto Show. The 2013 Ford Focus ST wasn’t one of the cars unveiled at the show. This turbocharged hot hatchback has been around for a while now. Shelby American has unveiled a hopped up version of the Focus ST at the show.

shelby-focus1

While the Shelby name is associated with hopped up mustangs producing significantly more horsepower than normal, Shelby American curiously adds no additional power to its version of the Focus ST. The card develops 252 hp from a turbocharged stock engine. Most of the tweaks Shelby adds to the vehicle come in the form of visual items.

The car gets new wheels, tires, suspension, a new hood with louvers, and three different graphics options. Anyone who’s ever priced a Shelby customized Mustang knows that these things are insanely expensive. The customized Focus ST is no different, the package starts at $14,995.

That’s on top of the price of the standard Focus ST that will cost you $23,700 at minimum. For nearly $15,000, you can get improvements like bigger brakes, a new exhaust system, a special interior, and a special shifter. Apparently the special Shelby massaged version of the Focus ST will be limited to 500 per year. Honestly, I’ll be surprised if they can sell a fraction of that number, considering the car has the same horsepower.

Ford Atlas concept is likely the next F150

The Ford F150 is a hugely important vehicle to the automaker as one of its most popular and bestselling vehicles. Ford is showing off a new concept vehicle called the Atlas Concept that the automaker is billing as the future vision for pickup trucks. What we’re looking at is likely the next generation of the Ford F150.

FordAtlasConcept_570

There’s nothing I see about this truck that is so far out there that Ford couldn’t put it into production tomorrow if it wanted. The concept uses the next generation EcoBoost engine promising increased capability and class leading fuel efficiency. From the side the truck looks very much like the existing F150.

The big change from the existing vehicles comes in the front with a more angular grille and narrow headlights. The large grille looks a lot like the front of Ford’s existing heavy-duty pickups. The Atlas Concept has a number of features aimed specifically at saving fuel via aerodynamics and reducing wind resistance.

The Atlas Concept features active grille shutters that stay open when the engine needs cooling and close on the Highway to improve aerodynamics. The concept also has active wheel shutters that deploy at highway speeds to help aerodynamics and close at low speeds and when stopped. The concept also has a drop-down front air dam that lowers at highway speeds to improve underbody airflow. Power running boards deploy automatically when the doors are open and tuck away under the vehicle when in motion to improve dynamics. Check out the video below to see more of the attractive Atlas Concept.

Chrysler unveils plan to manufacture Jeeps in China

Chrysler has announced a deal with Guangzhou Automobile Group, a Chinese manufacturer, that will bring Jeep production back to China. This won’t be the first time the popular brand has been manufactured in China, with the initial production round taking place in 1983 and ending in 2009. Three import models are still available in the nation, but this deal will be a big step in expanding the Jeep brand there.

In addition to Jeep production, the deal with Guangzhou also allows for the building of more Fiat models, which is also owned by Chrysler. For now, Chrysler has an estimated 150 dealerships in China, and has stated plans to increase that number to 200 by the end of the year. The three imported models available for sale in China already include the Grand Cherokee, Jeep Compass, and Jeep Wrangler.

Chief Operating Office of Chrysler and Fiat in Asia Mike Manley offered this statement. “The expansion of the agreement with our GAC partners will allow us to unleash the potential of both our Fiat and Chrysler Group brands in China … The reality is you can’t ignore the size of the market or the opportunity that it represents.”

This comes after the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT’s unveiling today. The SUV features a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine with 465 pound-foot of torque, as well as an 8-speed transmission and towing capacity up to 7,200 pounds, a reported 44-percent increase over the 2013 model. To keep fuel costs down while being a tad more environmentally friendly, the vehicle also features Eco-Mode, a feature that optimizes transmission shifting. Sadly, there’s no pricing or available info yet.

Tesla to open 25 new stores in 2013

Tesla Motors is making waves, and the company is looking to have a big year during 2013. They already have over 20 stores in North America, with more than 30 located overseas. 13 of them were opened up in 2012 alone, but the company plans to open up even more this year. Tesla confirmed at the North American International Auto Show this week that they plan on opening 25 stores in 2013.

1023_tesla-800x479-580x347

Vice president of sales for Tesla, George Blankenship, confirmed plans for 25 new retail locations opening throughout 2013, with half of them opening up outside the US. One of those stores will include the company’s first location in China, which is due to open sometime in the spring, so just a few months from now.

The company also stated that they’re still committed to blanketing the US with Supercharger charging stations for Tesla vehicles. Only eight of them are fully operational now, and most of them are on the west coast, but Tesla plans to also cover the east cost in the coming years. They also plan to eventually open up charging stations in the middle of the US, as well, which will allow Tesla owners to drive across the US without using a drop of gas or spending any money, since using the chargers will be free for Tesla vehicle owners.

Tesla announced back in November that they expect its Supercharger network to cover the entire United States by the end of 2013. We’re not sure exactly how many charging stations they plan to have opened in order to consider it the “entire United States”, but we’re guessing it means you’ll be able to drive anywhere without running out of juice.

2015 Acura NSX concept revealed at NAIAS 2013

Today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, Honda officially unveiled the 2015 Acura NSX. It’s the company’s second try at an NSX concept, after they revealed the 2012 NSX concept at last year’s show. This new model looks relatively the same overall, with just a few minor changes coming in 2015.

2015-acura-nsx

The 2015 NSX Concept maintains its low and wide stance that we saw last year, and the car is highlighted by clean, modern, smooth, and simple surfacing, with edgy details that communicate a supercar feel and attitude. The overall shape reminds us of Audi’s own R8 supercar, with the slanted rear that goes all the way back to the tail.

Acura NSX production ended in 2005, and it’s seen a long history that goes back to 1990, when the first-year NSX was released. The 2015 model will feature a mid-mounted V6 engine with a seven-speed manual transmission. The car will also feature three electric motors that will work together to help drive all four wheels, and to assist with acceleration and braking.

This “Sports Hybrid AWD system” is expected to deliver V8 performance with “better-than-four-cylinder” fuel economy. Indeed, a three-motor, mid-engine supercar sounds like the ideal machine for a brand attempting to distinguish itself as a luxury and performance company without waste or excess. As far as price goes, there’s no set cost yet, but Acura says it will cost more than the Nissan GT-R, which already starts shy of $100,000.

Lexus 2014 IS official with F SPORT spice

Lexus couldn’t help but tease us with a little-pre Detroit show 2014 IS action last week, but the meat of the sports sedan’s reveal comes today, with the IS 250, IS 350, and further-heated F SPORT variants being officially revealed. Set to hit showrooms in mid-2013, the all-new cars – including the first hybrid in the IS range, the IS 300h – feature a vast upsizing of the Lexus spindle grille, rear- and all-wheel drive options, and performance features borrowed from the company’s bonkers LFA sportscar.

2014LexusISFSPORT025

The IS 250 will have a 2.5-liter V6 gas engine, while the IS 360 will have a 3.5-liter V6 gas engine; select international markets – including Europe and Japan – will get the IS 300h, which will pair a 2.5-liter engine with electric motors. The IS 350 RWD borrows the IS F’s eight-speed sports auto shifter, while the whole range gets a Sport mode with “G force Artificial Intelligence” (G-AI) to pick the best gear and downshift pattern depending on the G forces the car is under while cornering.

2014LexusISFSPORT021

Of course, serious drivers will be eyeing Lexus’ F SPORT variants, which will be offered across the 2014 IS range. In addition to changes in styling details both inside and out, the F SPORT models will get special suspension and steering tuning, and a Variable Gear Ratio Steering option on the IS 350 F SPORT specifically. 18-inch wheels of an exclusive design, and a sturdier gearbox round out the key changes.

Inside, the 3-inch longer wheelbase adds up to extra space for passengers and more room in the trunk; by slimming the front seats, too, Lexus has given those in the rear an extra 3-inches for their knees. Those rear seats also fold with a 60/40 split. As for the dash, that has touch-sensitive keys for HVAC, and touchscreen infotainment with real-time traffic and weather information, while the steering wheel gets controls for both the driver’s display and the center console screen.

2014LexusISFSPORT024

As for safety, there are ten airbags, lane-departure alerts, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and more, some of which are standard and others cost-options. Lexus isn’t talking pricing for the 2014 IS at this stage, with the promise of numbers closer to the launch midway through the year.

Jeep unveils 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT

Jeep has unveiled a refreshed and revised 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT. The Grand Cherokee SRT is a combination of sports car and SUV. For 2014, the Grand Cherokee SRT uses the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 engine producing 470 hp and 465 pound-foot of torque. That engine is mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

14-gc-srt

The new engine and transmission helps increase the towing capacity of the SUV to 7200 pounds, which is a 44% improvement over the 5000 pound towing capacity of the 2013 and earlier model Grand Cherokee SRT. Jeep says the new eight-speed automatic transmission is engineered to optimize shift quality and shift points for fuel economy, performance, and drivability.

The 2014 model also features an Eco-Mode that optimizes the transmissions shift schedule to help save fuel. The engine also deactivates four cylinders when full power isn’t required. The 2014 model also has an improved and retuned Selec-Track system to deliver more torque to the rear wheels in Track Mode to optimize rear-wheel drive characteristics.

The vehicle also comes standard with one control and has an upscaled interior with new LED lighting. The vehicle also features an 8.4-inch touchscreen and a seven-inch programmable multiview gauge cluster. The car also features Uconnect to sink with smartphones and more. Pricing and availability information are unknown at this time.

Hyundai unveils HCD-14 concept at North American International Auto Show

Hyundai is unveiling a new concept car at the 2013 N. American International Auto Show. The concept car shows the design direction that Hyundai will be taking in the future for its premium vehicles. The car is the HCD-14 Genesis concept.

hcd-14

The car has an interesting and very angular design, which is a departure from many of the vehicles we see on the roads today. Most vehicles on the roads have lots of curves whereas the HCD-14 concept as straight and sharp lines. I particularly like that has no door handles.

HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA HCD-14 GENESIS

Hyundai says that the concept car conveys a “fluidic-precision, liquid-metal design language.” The car has a straight and angular front fascia with a brushed metal grill that has deep openings. The design also has an extended dash to axle length, short overhangs, large diameter wheels, and a sharply tapered greenhouse. The design is intended to give the silhouette of a classic rear-drive sports sedan.

The car reminds me of a modernized version of the classic Lincoln with rear suicide doors. The rear doors of the concept are rear-hinged, meaning they open the opposite direction of the front doors. Inside the car, Hyundai uses a mix of analog and digital gauges to provide the driver with data. The vehicle also has an iPad storage station in the center console. The power plant for the concept is the Hyundai Tau V8 mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
