Nissan expands battery warranty coverage for Leaf EVs

Nissan hasn’t been having the best of luck with its all-electric Leaf. The vehicle hasn’t sold in numbers like the automaker had hoped. Out of the consumers who purchased the Leaf, nearly 18,000 complained of battery capacity loss and poor performance of the vehicle battery packs.

To address the complaints of Leaf owners Nissan has decided to expand warranty coverage for the vehicle battery packs. Nissan has announced that it will be replacing batteries that have lost capacity for Leaf owners. Nissan says that it is the first and only auto manufacturer to provide limited warranty coverage for battery capacity loss on the EVs it produces.

The extended warranty coverage will go into effect this spring and apply to all 2011 and 2012 Leaf vehicles. The coverage will protect against capacity loss and batteries that fall under nine bars of the maximum 12 bars displayed on the Leaf’s battery capacity gauge. The extended warranty covers the batteries if they fall under nine bars before 60,000 miles.

If the capacity loss occurs before the 60,000-mile mark, Nissan will replace or repair the batteries free of cost. Nissan is also said that it is working to improve the accuracy of the battery capacity gauge in the vehicle. Some Leaf owners have found themselves stranded on the side of the road when that gauge showed that the batteries had enough capacity to make a trip.

Mercedes-Benz unleashes 2014 CLA-class promotional shots early

Mercedes-Benz fanatics are in for a treat, as the company has apparently released new shots of its upcoming 2014 CLA-class sedan. We’re pretty sure these shots – which were originally posted on AutoMonthly – are official shots from Mercedes, and at least they look the part, showing off the exterior and interior of the car with a professional flare you won’t often find outside the realm of promotional images.

CLA2

The look of the CLA might be a little jarring for longtime Mercedes owners, as the company is taking some leaps of faith with the louder design. The new car has a lot in common with the A-class series, and its risky design can be attributed to Mercedes’ desire to net some younger customers for itself. Gernot Bracht explained the shake up in design to Car and Driver, saying that the 2014 CLA is “Definitely not a typical Mercedes-Benz.”

CLA3

“The CLA is clearly informed by Asian tastes, and it symbolizes yet another departure from the traditionally purist German approach to design,” Bracht said. “But this is becoming a trend, and in a way the CLA reminds me of Opel’s approach with the new Adam.” Will this new design rub those longtime fans of Mercedes-Benz the wrong way? Perhaps it’s too early to tell, but we could definitely see this kind of car getting younger drivers interested.

CLA4

We’ll have to wait until next month to find out more about the 2014 CLA, but for now, we have these shots to gawk at. Expect the the 2014 CLA to get a lot of attention as Mercedes-Benz reveals more about it, given that the car signals something of a departure for the famous car company. What do you think of the 2014 CLA’s design?

Federal regulators want black boxes in cars made after September 2014

We mentioned earlier this month that rumors were circulating that the federal government would move to place event data recorders inside new vehicles. Federal regulators are now proposing that all new automobiles sold in the US after September of 2014 will be required to be equipped with these event data recorders. The recorders are somewhat like the black boxes that are found inside aircraft.

crashed-car

The boxes will reportedly be able to record all sorts of information about a vehicle including how fast it was traveling, the number of passengers, and the vehicle location. The National Transportation Safety Agency is calling for public comments on the proposed rule by February 11, 2013. The NTSA has the authority to set motor vehicle safety requirements and it is within the agency’s power to require automakers install event data recorders in the vehicle.

The way these boxes would work is that the devices would activate the record data for about 30 seconds during certain events. This would mean during sudden braking, acceleration, swerving, or other types of driving that could lead to an accident. The information would be able to be downloaded from the box remotely or through physical connection depending on the vehicle model.

The federal regulators say that the data would be used “primarily for the purpose of post-crash assessment of vehicle safety performance.” You can bet if the information is available; it will also wind up being used in court to prove or disprove the drivers fault in an accident. Privacy advocates want the data to be anonymized and wants guarantees that the information won’t be marketed. Insurance companies could potentially take this information and use it to increase rates for an area.

Toyota paying out $1.1 billion to settle acceleration lawsuits

There’s more closure in the case of some Toyota cars falling victim to “unintended acceleration,” as the company has agreed to pay out a whopping $1.1 billion to settle lawsuits centering around the flaw. For those who have forgotten, Toyota was forced to recall a ton of 2010 Lexus RX 350s and 450s after it was discovered that the floor mats can entangle the pedals and force the cars to accelerate. Unfortunately, a flaw like this is normally discovered after drivers have accidents, which is why Toyota was hit with a number of lawsuits.

lexus_rx450h-580x416 (1)

USA Today explains that for some of the cars involved in the case, Toyota will pay to have them retrofit with technology that aids in stopping the car in an emergency situation. For other cars that can’t be retrofitted with this tech, the owners will be getting cold hard cash. The important thing for Toyota was showing that this wasn’t a defect with the cars’ computers, but rather an issue with floor mats. With that little bullet point on the books, Toyota has agreed to pay out these settlements and put the whole thing behind them.

Toyota was recently fined $17.35 million by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for failing to report the flaw in the allowed time frame, which is the largest fine the NHTSA can impose. The company now must meet with the NHTSA regularly to report its progress in fixing the issue, so a lot of headway has been made in this case lately.

It’s great to see Toyota doing things like this to get the issue resolved, but we’re sure the company just wants to move on from all of this controversy as quickly as possible. We probably won’t be hearing too much about this case now that Toyota has agreed to both the settlement and the NHTSA’s fine since there’s not much left for the company to resolve. Still, if you need a recap, you can find posts about the issue in our story timeline below.

Lincoln MKC compact crossover tipped for Detroit Auto Show 2013

The next generation Ford Lincoln MKC compact crossover vehicle has been tipped to be appearing for the first time at the Detroit Auto Show 2013. This vehicle has been said to be appearing by the Detroit Bureau where they’re confident that this downsized crossover-utility vehicle will be one of many similar vehicles to be showing their face for the first time officially. The MKC has been said to be sharing many features with the Ford Escape (as pictured below) save for many luxury features that’ve been cut out to make this machine more affordable for the mass market.

The Ford Motor Company will be bringing four new Lincoln luxury vehicles to the market between here and 2014, the MKC being one of them. There’s also a new MKZ planned, so says the same source, this being accompanied by a replacement for the larger MKS. The fourth vehicle has been tipped to be a complete replacement for the full-sized Navigator SUV.

The 2013 Lincoln MKZ that’s been out in the public eye for some time now is set as a precursor for the MKC, both vehicles said to be working with many of the same features, top to bottom. The MKC is said to be working with the same horizontal grille as its predecessor and will have the same C-segment platform as the Ford Escape and the Ford Focus. The new Lincoln MKZ has been tipped to be working with several different powertrain options including the Ford 2.0-liter EcoBoost or possibly the 1.6-liter turbocharged EcoBoost.

We’ll be seeing this vehicle within the next few weeks if not straight up in-person at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. This show also goes by the name North American International Auto Show and is set to be a massive display of excellence from car and truck brands from left to right, as always. Stick with SlashGear for the full scoop!

GM to differentiate SUV and truck designs with 2014 models

If you know anything about SUVs and trucks from General Motors, you’ll know that the company has largely been replicating their designs so that certain SUVs and trucks match each other. However, starting with their 2014 models, GM will be giving each of its vehicles a unique look to separate them from the pack.

GM_Exterior

The company has announced that they’re dropping the cookie-cutter approach to the interiors and exteriors of its full-size SUVs and pickup trucks, beginning with the redesigned 2014 models. We already took a look at the 2014 Silverado and Sierra from Chevrolet and GMC, respectively, but it looks like 2014 SUVs, like the Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon, will look a bit different this time around.

Chris Hilts, creative manager of interior design at General Motors, says that in the past, the company has “shared SUV and truck interiors. That is not the case going forward.” When the Chevrolet Tahoe and the Suburban, the GMC Yukons, and the Cadillac Escalades get their redesigns for 2014, they’ll be getting their own instrument panels, consoles, instrumentation, knobs, materials, and other design elements.

Previously, the Escalades and Yukons shared similar door panels, but since these two vehicles have different prices ranges that cater towards different types of people, GM thought it was necessary to finally give each of their SUVs a unique look that differentiated from one another. Essentially, GM says that a 2014 Silverado and a 2014 Tahoe will look completely different, and won’t have similar qualities that the two vehicles have shared for so long.

Volvo to integrate Spotify in its vehicles

Spotify‘s integration in Volvo vehicles is “imminent,” according to the company’s VP of Electronic Systems Engineering. This will be Spotify’s first foray into the automotive world, and will be made available via Ericsson’s Connected Vehicle Cloud platform. This comes shortly after the news that Spotify is now available as a channel on most Roku set top boxes.

spotify-logo

Ericsson’s Connected Vehicle Cloud offers the Spotify integration, among other things, and is designed to serve as a means to connect to those services. For now at least, the system will utilize the driver’s data connection via their smartphone. Another option will be the ability to use a secondary SIM card on the driver’s data plan.

Although the current focus is Volvo, Ericsson stated that it will also be pushing the service out to other automakers. “We are going to try and work with different industry players,” says Ericsson’s Consulting and Systems Integration head Paolo Colella. “We will try to spread the use of these applications to other automakers and in other areas.”

This is in addition to Volvo’s widely available On Call system, which includes a mobile app that allows car owners to control their vehicles – portions of it, anyway – via their mobile device. The service requires payment for its own data connection, however, a limiting factor in Volvo’s desire to provide services like, for example, Spotify. That is why, at least for now, Ericsson’s Connected Vehicle Cloud utilizes the driver’s already existing data plan via his or her smartphone.

NHTSA takes it investigation of Ford’s acceleration problem to the next level

Back on October 27, we reported that the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration had opened an investigation against Ford due to reports of sticky throttles. In a related matter, the NHTSA has now increased its investigation of other Ford models, which are said to suffer from stuck accelerators due to the carpeting in the vehicles. The investigation’s upgrade will allow the agency to better look into the issue.

fusion

This particular investigation targets 2008 to 2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln MKZ models, all of which have been the cause of driver reports concerning unintended acceleration. The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation has a total of 52 reports of the issue. According to drivers, upon releasing the accelerator after quickly accelerating, the accelerator will remain stuck in position.

Although the investigation states that floor mats are being reported as possibly causing the stuck accelerators, it is worth noting that some of the symptoms don’t readily point at carpet being the problem. Users have reported having problems applying the brakes once the accelerator gets stuck, and likewise can only stop the stuck acceleration by shifting into neutral and turning the car off.

This investigation is similar to the one instigated in October, which looked into sticky throttles on the 2000 to 2003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable models. Reports indicated that a cruise control cable collar could break and cause the throttle to remain open. Another investigation into sticky throttles was launched back in March of this year as well, regarding the 2001 through 2006 Taurus and Sable models.

Nissan announces US battery plant for Leaf EV

Nissan recently celebrated two years of Leaf EV sales. During the celebration, Nissan also announced that it would be opening a battery plant in the United States in Smyrna, Tennessee. The battery plant will be the largest lithium-Ion automotive battery plant in the United States.

leaf-charge-580x357

The facility will manufacture battery components to be used during the ramp-up of production for the all-electric 2013 Nissan Leaf EV early next year. Nissan says that the new plant will only be the third of its kind in the entire world operated by a major automaker. I can’t help but wonder why Nissan is ramping up production of its Leaf when sales of the vehicle have been less than stellar.

Nissan says that since December of 2010 it sold over 18,000 Leaf EV’s to customers in the United States. Nissan also brags that it has sold 46,000 of the fully electric vehicles around the world. While Nissan has struggled to meet its sales goals in the United States, the company claims that the Leaf is the most successful completely electric vehicle in history.

Nissan says that the first batteries produced at the plant have completed the required aging process and are now ready to be charged for the first time. The battery factory is capable of producing up to 200,000 batteries annually depending on the market demand for the vehicle. Nissan says that the batteries produced at the plant can also be used for future vehicles added to its electric vehicle portfolio. Nissan says that the battery plant could add up to 1000 additional jobs depending on demand.

Ford to correct Fusion and Escape overheating issue with software updates

Ford has been in the news quite a bit lately, with reports of recalls, malfunctions, and questionable gas mileage estimates, among other things. On December 1, we reported that Ford had initiated a voluntary recall of select 2013 Escape and Fusion vehicles due to issues with engine overheating, which could result in fire. Now, a little over a week later, the company has announced that the problem has been identified and will be corrected with software updates.

The overheating problem is caused by an issue with the cooling system, which was not capable of recognizing and adjusting to loss of pressure. To correct this issue, Ford will issue a series of software updates specifically for the cooling system, which it says will fix the issue. The problem, according to the press release, was identified by a “cross-discipline engineering team.”

The Ford Group’s Vice President of Global Product Development Raj Nair offered this statement. “We remain absolutely committed to continuously improving and providing the highest-quality vehicles to our customers. When a potential issue is identified, we act promptly on behalf of our customers, as we did this time.”

The recall only affects Fusion and Escape 2013 SE and SEL 1.6-liter models sold in the United States and Canada. While waiting for the updates to be released, owners are encouraged to take their vehicles to their local Ford dealership to get alternative transportation (for free) until the problem can be corrected. Continuing to drive one of the recalled models could result in an engine fire.
