Case Turns Your iPhone into a Hard Drive

Obviously, there’s no way a phone case can transform your iPhone into an actual hard drive – unless, well, it actually comes packed with a spare disk drive on the back. However, it’s way easier to give your smartphone the appearance that it is an actual hard drive, at least when it’s viewed from the back.

hard drive iphone coverAside from protecting your phone from the elements and making it every geek’s envy, this plastic case might make your iPhone less appealing to thieves, since they might think that it’s just some ratty old hard drive that probably isn’t worth much on the black market. At least, let’s hope they’ll think that way.

This creative iPhone case comes from Fred & Friends, and is currently available on Perpetual Kid for $13(USD) – at this point, it’s only available in iPhone 4/4S sizes though. While it’s not the first such cover we’ve spotted, you can actually buy this one.

Seidio OBEX iPhone 5 case is waterproof and impact proof

If you’re one of the clumsy sorts that worries constantly you’re going to drop your iPhone 5 and kill it, you need to get the case on your smartphone right away. While some cases offer very minimal protection and leave the screen uncovered, people looking for the ultimate protection for their phone need a case that fully encloses everything. Accessory maker Seidio has announced that it is now shipping a new highly rugged and protective case for the iPhone 5 called the OBEX.

seido-ip5

The OBEX case for the iPhone 5 and other smartphones is now shipping worldwide. If you’re wondering what OBEX actually means, the word is Latin for barrier. The case promises protection from drops, liquids, and dust. The case is capable of protecting your iPhone against water, snow, mud, and other liquids with an IP68 rating. That rating means that the case protects against complete submersion in water and dust.

The case uses two-stage protection to seal all critical points of entry against water and dust. The case uses anti-reflective glass that won’t interfere with the camera lens. The screen protector is made from acrylic glass and sits flush against the screen. Having the screen protector setting flush against the screen means it doesn’t leave behind watermark effects and the screen remains clear.

The case also passed military grade drop tests meeting MIL-STD-810G by surviving drops from four-feet at a variety of angles. The glass covering over the screen of the smartphone as a 4H rating and the case itself is made from a combination of polycarbonate and thermoplastic polyurethane. While the case offers lots of protection, it allows signals from Wi-Fi, cellular radios, and Bluetooth to pass freely through. The case retail for $79.95 with a combo package that includes a holster selling for $89.95. If you’re not an iPhone 5 user, the case is also available for the incredibly popular Samsung Galaxy S III.

Liquipel 2.0: Now Even More Waterproof

The need to keep your phone safe from water and the weather is nothing new, but when the first version of Liquipel was released, I was pretty amazed. This coating is designed to protect gadgets from water, even without a case. Liquipel 2.0 was launched at CES 2013 this year, and it’s gone a step further than the original.

liquipel 2 nano coat phone

Liquipel 2.0 is a nanoscale coating, capable of protecting your smartphone’s circuitry in the event of water exposure. It’s supposed to keep your device nice and safe, and the new formula is apparently 100 times more effective than the original coating. The new Liquipel coating permeates the entire device and bonds with it on a ‘molecular’ level, to keep it safe from water for years. While Liquipel doesn’t recommend that you intentionally submerge your coated gadgets in water, they do say that the coating will protect it from accidental spills and water damage.

Liquipel plans to start offering their coating process at retail locations, the first of which is scheduled to launch at the West Edmonton Mall in Canada later this year.

In the mean time, you order a brand new iPhone 5 pre-treated with Liquipel 2.0 for $899.99(USD). That seems like a whole lot of money for what it is. Hopefully, the cost for treating your own device won’t be as prohibitive, as the Liquipel 1.0 coating costs as little as $59 for an iPhone.

Audojo kick-starts iPad gaming case, we go hands-on (video)

Audojo kickstarts iPad gaming case, we go handson video

While many of us love playing games on the iPad, we often lament the lack of physical controls inherent to the platform. Audojo is hoping to change this with an iPad gaming case which is launching today on Kickstarter. The accessory works with any iPad 2 or newer, and features a pair of analog joysticks, two shoulder buttons and stereo speakers. Unlike other mobile game controllers like iFrogz’s Caliber Advantage or PowerA’s Moga / Moga Pro, Audojo skips Bluetooth for a low-latency microphone-based interface.

The case slides open just enough to accommodate an iPad and, once closed, wraps around both ends of the tablet without interfering with any of the cameras, buttons, or the 30-pin / Lightning port. Audojo automatically connects to the iPad via the standard 3.5mm audio jack, which is replicated at the bottom of the case next to a power switch, LED and mini-USB connector (for charging). It’s important to note that the accessory is not designed to charge the iPad, something that would require a larger battery and increase complexity / cost. We spent some time with a prototype iPad gaming case and came away pretty satisfied — head past the break for our impressions.

At first sight, Audojo’s prototype looks a little clunky since it adds quite a bit of bulk to the iPad’s figure. Once you pick it up, however, that’s all quickly forgotten — it’s light and well balanced and feels comfortable in hand. The analog joysticks and shoulder buttons are in just the right place — if you’re used to playing console games, you’ll be right at home. If there’s any room for improvement, it’s with the pods that house the shoulder buttons, electronics and batteries at the back of the case. These are currently too wide but Audojo plans to remedy this before production thanks to an improved circuit board layout. We were impressed with the prototype’s build quality (it’s CNC machined), especially the design of the sliding mechanism used to capture the iPad. Production units are slated to be thinner, with flush PSP-like analog joysticks and two headphone jacks (instead of one). Battery life presently beats the iPad when blasting the built-in speakers, and stretches to several weeks (!) when listening with headphones.

Audojo currently integrates with Unity (with a package available in the Unity Asset Store) and provides a native Objective C SDK. The company is very interested in connecting with developers and is offering special packages ($600 and up) that include prototypes as part of its Kickstarter campaign. A few games already support the iPad gaming case, including 1948: Dawn of Future and Cowboy Guns (both available in the App Store) plus the Unity demo Angry Bots and the unofficial iOS port of Quake III — it’s even been used to control Parrot’s AR Drone and Sphero. The accessory is expected to ship in July 2013 and retail for $99, but Audojo is making it available today on Kickstarter for $55 (first 200 backers) and up. Take a look at our gallery and hands-on video above, then follow the source link below to check out the campaign.

Nokia Offers 3D Printed Case Developer Kit for Lumia 820 Smartphones

I’ve long thought that one of the coolest technological innovations in recent times is 3D printing. The technology originally allowed manufacturers to rapidly prototype parts and products. 3D printing technology is far from inexpensive, but the cost has come down as more consumer oriented 3D printers have hit the market. Nokia is now helping people who have access to a 3D printer and might want to create custom shells for the Lumia 820 smartphone.

lumia 820

Nokia has offered new detail on the Lumia 820 3D printing community project. As part of the project, Nokia has offered up 3D templates, case specs, recommended materials, and best practices for individuals to 3D print their own customized shells for the Lumia 820. Nokia calls the materials its 3D Printing Development kit or 3DK for short.

The idea is that individuals can 3D print their own cases for the smartphone or businesses can begin taking orders for customized Lumia 820 shells. I think this is a very interesting idea, not that I expect this to make Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 smartphones any more popular with most users.

Some smartphone manufacturers let users hack the software on their devices, so it’s nice to see someone allowing users to hack the hardware to suit their needs.

Translucent Mod Kit Exposes iPhone 5 Guts in All Its Naked Glory

We’ve seen transparent casemods or rear panels for past versions of the iPhone. Now it’s the iPhone 5′s turn to show off its goods, courtesy of the Translucent Mod Kit from iPhone5Mod, the same aftermarket shop who makes the magnetic keyboard and gamepad for the iPhone 5.

iphone 5 translucent mod kit by iphone5mod

Aside from letting you see what your iPhone is made of, iPhone5mod claims that the kit’s plastic parts are more resistant to scratches and fingerprint smudge compared to the default aluminum rear panel. I’m not sure if it’s tough enough that you won’t need to cover your phone with a protective case though.

You can order the Translucent Mod Kit from iPhone5Mod for $40 (USD). As shown in the video above, the kit comes in seven colors; if you have extra money you can get all the available colors for $169. Keep in mind that the kit only comes with the parts and not the tools needed to actually install it on the iPhone 5, so you’d better know someone who can do it for you before you order the kit.

Endliss iPhone LED Notification Case: Never Miss a Notification Again

After the numerous times I’ve dropped my iPhone, I totally believe in the protection of a sturdy case. Thanks to cases, my current phone still has no scratches, so when I inevitably upgrade, the pain in my wallet will be a lot less thanks to the resale value I’ll get from a non-messed-up phone. While my current case offers good protection, this case is definitely something I’d like to try out since it offers a neat feature that others don’t.

My phone is always in silent mode, but I rarely miss any important notifications because I use the flash notifications setting. This case design takes that basic concept of visual notifications a bit further.

The Endliss Smartcase has LEDs built into its back, that will flash in a number of different ways, displaying icons and other information to let you know of any notifications that you might get.

The case has an 8×16 LED grid that syncs to your iPhone 5 via Bluetooth 4.0. It can also display the time and comes with a 1,500 mAh battery, which is enough to power the lights and give your phone a bit of extra juice.

The Endliss case was shown off at CES 2013 last week. It’s a pretty slick concept, but there’s no word on a price or release date yet.

Moshi iGlaze Kameleon iPhone 5 kickstand case Review

You’ll find no lack of highly fashionable accessories for your Apple devices in the archives and active market at Moshi, their newest offering for the iPhone 5 (and the iPad mini) being no set of exceptions. With the iGlaze Kameleon for the iPhone 5 (with models for the iPhone 4 and 4S also being offered up for the masses) you’ll be both well protected and ready for stand-up action, with a fabulous form-fitting casing surrounding the device with a hard metal kick-out stand ready at the back for portrait or landscape sitting action.

side

The iGlaze Kameleon looks and feels extremely similar to the basic iGlaze collection with its cut-out circle set for a full Apple logo peek-a-boo. You’ve also got full access to each of your ports, switches, and your camera and flash. Best of all (and required for a people such as we), this case does not place any casing around the headphone jack – or at least the closest casing isn’t going to interfere with our headphone plugs. That’s vital for the on-the-go headphone wearer and/or hard-wired car audio lover.

backer

Understated fashion is what we’re talking about here, and the kickstand sticks with the theme. You’ve got the Moshi name/logo sitting near the end of the tail while the bulk of the stand is a perfectly simple flat aluminum, just ever-so-slightly darker than the rim of your iPhone 5. There’s also a protective “skin” included in the package that adheres to your iPhone 5′s back before you add your iGlaze Kemeleon case – the case attaches on its own, while the skin helps protect the logo of your iPhone through the revealed logo hole. Note here that we’ve got the black model while there’s a white color combination available from Moshi now as well.

backoff_black

Another case we’ve just gotten our first chance to take a peek at is made for the iPad mini and called “concerti”. This case is made of a hybrid silicone / microfiber inner casing for shock and scratch protection, and includes magnets for Smart Cover functionality. Close it up like a book and your iPad mini falls asleep, pull the elastic band around from the back to keep the whole case closed. This case also stands up and several angels and allows you full access to your back-facing camera, even when the case is folded backward.

The concerti for iPad mini case will run you $45.00 USD and is available right this minute from Moshi. The iGlaze Kameleon is also available now from Moshi and will cost you a cool $49.95. Interestingly enough, you can also use Moshi’s own “Xen Credits” for these purchases, these being points you earn from Moshi for special events and through your friends adding your name to their purchases upon payment – wild stuff!
