iPhone 5 ReadyCase “swiss army knife cover” blasts past funding goal

Now that the whole world is addicted to KickStarter-like programs such as Indiegogo, groups creating items such as the rather intense multi-functional ReadyCase for the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4/4S can jump in from a whole different direction. What we’re seeing here is a funding effort that had a $15,000 USD goal, has already raised $58,740, and still has 21 days left to go to raise more. The product is a set of cases, one that works for the iPhone 5, the other that works with the iPhone 4/4S, both of them absolutely strangely wonderful.

This set of cases has a headphone clip, camera lens ring, USB drive (removable), kickstand for both portrait and landscape (using the USB drive stick as the stand), and multi-tool. The multi-tool has a standard blade, serrated blade, flat-head screwdriver, bottle opener, and a choice of colors – black or silver! Of course you’re going to want to pop the tool off the case when you’re heading to the airport – not allowed!

The case fits on your phone like a charm and adds less than 3mm to its surface. The bulk of the case is made of aerospace grade composite materials as well, so you’ll have some basic protection for the back and sides of your device. The USB stick comes in two iterations – 8DB or 16GB, and again, fits into the case in several different ways allowing you some on-the-go stand-up action for your phone.

The headphone clip allows you to keep your phones tight to the device when you’ve wrapped them around the phone, and the integrated lens ring works with a variety of lenses, each of them included in the package. There’s a macro lens, a fish-eye lens, and a wide-angle lens too.

For those of you still wanting to contribute to the Indiegogo campaign, there’s good news – if you’ve got an iPhone 4/4S now and plan to update to the iPhone 5, no worries! You get both an iPhone 4/4S case and an iPhone 5 case in the package together – and the multi-tool and USB stick fit in both! Check it out!

iPad Mini details leaked by Cygnett cases

This week it appears that the iPad mini – a device not yet confirmed by Apple – has had details leaked by none other than accessory makers Cygnett in a couple of cases released to a storefront in Australia. Normally this sort of thing would be mentionable, but it’s generally a small brand that makes a point of showing off their pre-release device cases – in this case, a big brand like Cygnett would never show off cases early because such a reveal would be looked upon by Apple as a major breach of trust. As it stands, if these cases are indeed real, Cygnett may be in a load of trouble.

What we’re seeing here is a case that seems to confirm several of the details that we’ve head about before on the iPad mini. First, the name – iPad mini will be the name of the device if these cases are legit, and they do appear to be. Second, the case is 20 cm long by 13 cm wide, 9 inches diagonally. The case is also approximately 1 cm deep, this and the rest of the specifications leading toward a general understanding of how large the iPad mini will be.

The man from ProductFeedback that found the case drew up an iPad mini device on paper with the same border around a prospective display that the iPad currently has. Though this doesn’t match up with the product models that have been “leaked” thus far, it does yield an interesting final display size: 7 inches. This creates a device with a 19:6 aspect ratio and a device that’s essentially a squished iPad as it exists today.

Have a peek at the timeline below showing several other iPad mini bits and pieces, and know this: if Apple does indeed send out invitations on the 10th of this month, as it’s also been tipped, and the event is on the 17th, the device could be out in stores by the end of the month. Would you pick up an iPad mini here in the Autumn of 2012 to go along with your brand new iPhone 5? Let us know!

Visa lets iPhone-toting NatWest and RBS customers pay with NFC cases, join the future

Visa lets iPhonetoting NatWest and RBS customers pay with NFC cases, join the future

Two can play at the UK-banks-with-NFC-payments game. RBS (and by extension, NatWest) is partnering with Visa Europe to roll out TouchPay, a mobile payment system based around an iCarte case for the iPhone 4 and 4S — sorry, early iPhone 5 owners. In tandem with a native app, the service allows paying for goods at British shops by tapping the phone at a Visa-capable NFC terminal without needing the short-range wireless built-in. Any purchases under £20 ($32) can even skip the PIN code, if you’re just in that much of a hurry to get a Pret À Manger sandwich. Only 1,000 of the 9,000 who pre-registered for TouchPay are getting into Visa’s wallet-free initiative at this stage, although all NatWest and RBS customers with one of Apple’s semi-recent smartphones can participate once a trial run is over. We’re just wondering if and when Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone 8 owners get in on the action.

Cygnett does the inevitable iPhone 5 drop test

We knew this was coming, just no one thought it would be quite this fast. The iPhone 5 has only been available for a matter of hours and surely many of you are still patiently (or impatiently) waiting in line to get your very own 4-inch iPhone. Today however those sneaky folks from Cygnett have already done the inevitable iPhone 5 drop test.

Cygnett is a popular accessory and case manufacturer, and we’ve taken a look at plenty of their impressive products in the recent past, including some for the iPhone 4. Today however they’ve already got this awesome new smartphone from those Cupertino folks and are breaking them already. In what appears to be one of the first iPhone 5 drop tests, enjoy watching the screen crack!

So how does the all new and improved iPhone 5 handle the 4 foot drop? Quite well actually. Even with no case involved the new brushed aluminum design seems to handle the rough ground somewhat okay. No shattered glass everywhere and the back still looks pretty, aside from a few scratches. The front glass covering that beautiful and bigger 4-inch Retina Display takes on a little damage however. This time around it surely isn’t bad and won’t hider your usage too bad. Obviously you’ll want to protect this beauty with a new case from Cygnett, right?

Apple worked hard on the new design, while not too different from first glance, they’ve made significant improvements to the overall design. From the small details and level of precision, to making it lighter while stronger at the same time. Obviously you guys all know this already though right? If you’re still on the fence about buying the new iDevice you’ll need to take a look at our iPhone 5 review, then for more details hit our iPhone 5: Which model, where, and why post! That poor iPhone is cracked already. Sad right?

You Don’t Need a F*cking Case for Your iPhone 5 [Op-ed]

I’ve never used a case for my iPhone 4. Not even after the back broke for the third time. I didn’t do it because, unlike my grandma, I don’t cover my sofas with plastic. Or unlike idiots, I don’t protect my car’s front with a bra. More »

10Terra Nexus 7 Bamboo Eco-friendly case hands-on

We love our gadgets and gear here at SlashGear, and just like most people we’ve been looking for some awesome cases to protect our beloved electronics. Today we’re looking at an awesome 100% hand-made Bamboo case for the Google Nexus 7 we found from an awesome Kickstarter project by 10Terra. Check out our hands-on video below of this sexy case!

The case we have before you is the 10Terra Eco-friendly bamboo series that they’re currently trying to get funded over on their kickstarter, and it’s pretty easy on the eyes. Like we mentioned above (and in our video) the case is 100% hand-made from pure Bamboo and is extremely sturdy, lightweight, and outright gorgeous to use, hold, and look at.

The case has been crafted with 10Terra’s awesome hand-made skills, but the level of precision for the cutouts to all the ports, speakers, power buttons and more are all near machine perfect. The case is extremely smooth, durable, and thanks to it being Bamboo it will protect your tablet while protecting itself from scratches too. I don’t know about you guys but once we put eyes on it, we knew we had to have one!

Just look at it! Pretty nice looking right? The word “classy” comes to mind. The folks from 10Terra have about 10 days left on their impressive kickstarter campaign, and this is surely one worth backing. Whether it’s just a few bucks to help their eco-friendly cause, or $44 for the Nexus 7 anything will help. They also offer cases for the iPad, and iPhone for those not rocking an Android tablet. 10Terra has cheaper iPhone cases made out of Eco-felt which is 100% recycled water-bottles too.

10Terra is just over halfway to their goal of $9000 after starting their campaign back on September 1st. With 10 days left hopefully they can get these sexy, impressive, durable, and eco-friendly cases in the hands of more consumers. Enjoy all the images below of this beautifully handcrafted Nexus 7 case, then head to the kickstarter page to contribute if you’d like.

pomm Uncorks the iPadCorkCase

There’s no denying the fact that I’m always looking for a really good iPad case. It looks like the Portuguese design studio pomm has created a pretty cool iPad case, made up entirely of cork. I wonder if it will float if dropped into water, or if you can stick pushpins into it.

The iPadCorkCase is designed to protect your iPad (which is good I guess, because it sort of defeats the purpose to have a case that doesn’t do this.) They chose to use cork because it’s durable, versatile, has a high resistance to daily wear and tear, as well as its shock absorption and water resistant properties.

The case isn’t slim, but I guess that it needed to be this thick to do its job. While I don’t think that this case revolutionize the case industry, it is a cool looking case. The first 500 preorders can get it for €55 (~$72 USD) at pomm. Prices go up to  €60/$75 USD after that.

PowerSkin Case for Samsung Galaxy S III Adds Battery, Supports NFC

Samsung has been very successful with its new smartphone the Galaxy S III and it has sold tons of the device. If you happen to be the owner of one of these smartphones looking for a case to protect it and need some extra battery life, you might want to check out this case.

The PowerSkin case adds an extra battery which has 1500 mAh of power, giving your phone up to 170 extra minutes of talk time or 97 extra hours on standby. Bright blue LEDs on the back to indicate how much power is left in the battery, and it also has smart technology inside to turn off when the smartphone is fully-charged to prevent wasted power.

The case also uses special technology to ensure that the Galaxy SIII’s NFC wireless transmissions pass through the silicone material, allowing the smartphone to communicate with other devices placed close to it using magnetic field induction.

STM Grip iPad Case: Colorful Kickstands for Adults & Kids

iPad cases comes in all shapes, sizes and colors, but there are only a few that work well if you have rambunctious kids wanting to play with them. While I’m all for having specifically kid-like cases for iPads, when you take it out of your home to work, it does look a bit strange (imagine taking the iGuy to the office!).

The STM Grip iPad Case endeavors to do protect your iPad from bumps and bruises without missing a beat. It’s fairly slim, so you won’t feel like your iPad is too thick, and comes with two kickstand settings, for typing and viewing. If your kids play with it, they’ll also appreciate the bold case colors.

The Grip iPad Case comes in orange, red, blue, and black. It retails for $44.99(USD) but you can find it for about $35 on Amazon.

Evouni Nano Stand Pouch: The Standing Phone Pouch

My iPhone cases definitely do the job of protecting my smartphone, but I’ve come to realize that a pouch of some kind might be a good idea, because it would better protect the screen. Screens are vulnerable, even when you put on a screen protector, to scratches of all kind.

Evouni’s Nano Stand Pouch looks pretty interesting. It looks low-tech but it’s not. The smartly-designed pouch lets you store your phone inside of it, and you can use it as a stand in an ergonomic resting position. The pouch is made out of a Japanese fabric called Toray Ecsaine, a microfiber-like fabric with a suede-like texture. The pouch has a leather lining with additional structure to keep phones upright.

The pouch works for devices with screens of 3.8″ to 4.3″ (size L), so it should fit your new iPhone 5 when it arrives. There is also a version more suited for the iPhone 4/4S  and it works for smartphones with screens of 3.8″ and smaller. It sells for $29.80(USD).
