Murata Walking Measurement System hands-on

Sure, Nike+ will track your gait and help you tell your friends just how that couch-to-2K training is working for ya, but wouldn’t it be nice if it your shoes were smarter? That’s partly what Murata is enabling with its Walking Measurement System, on display at CEATEC 2012. It’s a piezoelectric sensor that sits in the sole of your shoe and detects pressure at different points. The readings from this sensor, transmitted over low-power Bluetooth 4.0, could enable a number of applications including precise shoe fitting for runners, posture detection for dancers and even golf swing analysis for duffers. Murata had this built into a lovely pink Asics sneaker that was a bit too small for us to try on, but we did try squeezing another sensor that fed its data in real-time to an app running on iPhone. Cool concept? For sure, but for now it’s just that and nothing more.

Panasonic shows off foldable Windows 8 Ultrabook

[CEATEC 2012] A number of vendors have taken the opportunity of CEATEC this year to show off their up and coming products. While the predominant focus seems set on presenting different cutting-edge technologies, there are many who have unveiled products such as tablets and ultrabooks.

Among these is Panasonic who has taken the chance to showcase a new AX series Ultrabook. It is a Windows 8 Ultrabook which features an 11.6-inch display at a 1366 x 768 resolution. (more…)

Sharp motheye technology fights glare

motheye glass demonstrated in the middle

[CEATEC 2012] When choosing to buy a display, one of the factors consumers have to decide is whether they want a screen with higher contrast and lower glare or vice versa. Well, it looks like Sharp has got a solution to the problem with its new glass panel technology called motheye. As the name implies, it was inspired by a moth’s eye – which is said to have properties that eliminate reflection. Well, they studied the insect’s eye and realized that most of the anti-reflection comes from the moth eye’s surface which is rough and bumpy. When light hits this rough surface, it is sent bouncing away instead of splitting up and causing glare. In addition to reducing glare, this rough surface will also help light from beneath it shine through without splitting up and losing its intensity.

NEC Medias Tab UL N08-D tablet claims to be lightest 7″ tablet in the world

[CEATEC 2012] Here is another superlative attached to a tablet from Japanese company NEC – the NEC Medias Tab UL N08-D tablet, which is touted to be the lightest in the world, at least for the 7″ tablet category. Underneath the hood would be Qualcomm’s SnapDragon S4 Plus Krait mobile processor that ought to be speedy enough to get most of the work done, where the NEC Medias Tab UL N08-D tablet will be available from mobile operator NTT DoCoMo in that part of the world. It tips the scales at 249 grams, which translates to 0.54 pounds, whereas its rivals, the Google Nexus 7, Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and Kindle Fire HD weighs 0.74 pounds, 0.76 pounds and 0.87 pounds, respectively.

It measures 7.9 mm thin, while the battery itself carries 3100 mAh of juice. It is said that one is able to clock the SnapDragon S4 Plus SoC from Qualcomm to 1.7GHz without consuming too much juice. Wi-Fi N, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and USB 2.0 connectivity are thrown into the mix, and chances are pretty good the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will be made available in due time. can’t be too far away. There is no word on pricing or availability, but NTT DoCoMo will sell it from today onwards.

ROHM CIGS near-infrared see-through image sensor

[CEATEC 2012] The ROHM CIGS (Copper indium gallium (di)selenide) Near-Infrared sensor provides the ability to see  near-infrared light waves that are normally invisible to the naked eye. By capturing near-infrared light, it is possible to see through layers of matter without having to use harmful radiations like X-rays. In some ways, it is similar to techniques used to observe space through thick clouds of dust. (more…)

Panasonic Smart Apps aim to make life easier

[CEATEC 2012] Thanks to all the advancements in technology, our daily lives are becoming more and more sophisticated. What we used to fantasized about has now turned into reality for a lot of us. While some of us are happy with what we have right now, companies aren’t stopping just yet. Panasonic has an idea of what it wants our lives to be like, and at CEATEC, the company unveiled its suite of Smart Apps and appliances. Smart Apps consists of an app that runs on an Android smartphone with NFC, and a whole bunch of home appliances that are designed to work with the app: washing machines, refrigerators, microwave ovens and more.

Docomo language translator for Android is impressive

docomo translator android[CEATEC 2012] Last year, Docomo launched its menu translation app, but this year, their translation application can handle two use cases: conversations over the phone, and conversation side by side with someone speaking another language. At CEATEC 2012, we had an opportunity to try the conversation mode at CEATEC, and it worked quite well.

The concept is simple: two people speaking different language can communicate on a turn-by-turn basis, and the Docomo app translates each phrase in both visual and audio form in real-time. At any given time, each party can easily see if their phrase had been properly translated as every phrase always appear in both languages (see above). While this app may resemble Google Translate (Android version) on the surface, the Docomo translator user interface  is much better tuned for a two-person use, while Google Translate really works OK for a single person. I found the interaction with the Docomo app to be quicker and more natural than with Google Translate. (more…)

CEATEC 2012 wrap-up: concept cars, eye-tracking tech and motion sensors galore

DNP CEATEC 2012 wrapup concept cars, eyetracking tech and motion sensors galore

CEATEC, Japan’s largest annual electronics show, is winding down here on the outskirts of Tokyo. We’ve spent the past two days scouring the halls of the Makuhari Messe, digging up no shortage of concept cars, eye-tracking technologies and even the odd Windows 8 device. The star of the show may have been Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo, with its gaze-controlled prototypes and real-time translation app, but there were plenty of other gadgets on hand to peak our interest — even if many of them won’t make it to market anytime soon. Have a look for yourself by browsing our complete CEATEC 2012 coverage past the break.

Asukanet Aerial Imaging (AI) Plate

At CEATEC 2012, we’ve had the opportunity to see the Asukanet AI Plate for ourselves as the company had built a live demo in their booth. The overall idea of the AI (Aerial Imaging) Plate is to project an image that looks like it is floating in the air – you know, star wars style. According to the Asukanet representative, the intended first use is advertising in shopping malls. Customers would walk to a glass floor where an item is projected as a “hologram” (it’s not technically a hologram).

For this to work, the user needs to focus his/her eyes on the object, or it just looks “projected” instead of “floating”. Unfortunately, the image quality wasn’t so great, and it reminded me a bit of the paper-based holograms that change when you shift your head left and right (but a much better version of that). That said, we’ve been told that the system is very cheap to produce and install, so it looks like you simply just can’t have it all.
