Nokia Developers Walk Out By the Hundreds in Protest of Microsoft Deal

Google - Nokia Engineers

No sooner than the news came down this morning that Nokia would partner with Microsoft to adopt Windows Phone 7 as the operating system of choice for the future of Nokia smartphones, the backlash from Nokia employees – most of them developers working on Symbian, Nokia’s old and floundering smartphone platform – was swift, quiet, and clear: about 1,500 of them, working out of Nokia’s office in Tampere, Finland, stood up and walked out in protest.
It’s clear why these developers in particular had the strongest reaction: even though Nokia says that there will be more Symbian phones and the company isn’t abandoning the platform entirely (yet,) it’s clear that the winds have changed and as soon as Nokia’s re-org plans go into effect, a good chunk of them will lose their jobs.
Nokia hasn’t announced the specifics of how their announced platform changes will change staffing and development just yet, but it’s just a matter of time. Interestingly enough, Adrian Biggins, recruiter at Google EMEA, was more than happy to take the opportunity to remind those disgruntled developers (via Twitter) that they’re hiring, and that they should send in their resumes if they’re looking for work.

Dog Owners Sexier Than Smartphone Owners – Study

corgi puppy.jpg

App stores and touchscreens are all well and good, but when it comes to cruising for the ladies, dogs are still man’s best friend. According to a new study from Retrevo.com, women find guys with dogs sexier than guys with smartphones. “Want to attract more women?” the site asked in a blog post. “Get a dog! More women under 35 say they are attracted to a dog walker than someone using a cool smartphone.”

Men apparently find the use of “cool phones” more attractive than do women. Fifty percent of the men surveyed said they find people with cool phones more attractive–36 percent of women answered the same. The male/female split breaks down to 46 and 38 percent for “cool laptops,” 42 and 30 percent for book reading, and 36 and 29 percent for iPad ownership.

Interestingly, women find wearing Bluetooth headsets slightly more attractive–at 33 to 31 percent. As for phone holsters, no one finds those attractive, so stop doing that, if you ever want to get some again.

Every Nokia Phone Ever Made (Up to 2007)

Want to see every Nokia phone ever made? You’re in luck. Checkout this handy timeline. It’s got pictures of all of the company’s phones, from 1982’s analog first-generation Mobira Senator box [pictured], to 2006’s smartphones.

The timeline is actually from 2007, so it gets cut off there–fitting, actually, seeing how that’s the year that the iPhone revolutionized the industry. As we’ve seen in recent weeks, the company is still struggling to catch up to all of the innovations the rest of the industry has made over the past few years.

Samsung Gem Android Phone Goes To Alltel

samsung-gem.jpgAlltel has been dead for a while, ever since Verizon took over the company. However, in a few markets the carrier has hung around, and now it appears to be making a big come back with its latest handset. Alltel has released the Samsung Gem Android phone free with a two-year contract.

The Gem runs on Android 2.1, and features a Swype virtual keyboard, Bluetooth, full touchscreen, Wi-Fi, 3G, and 3.2 MP camera. The Gem supports the My Circle program that the Alltel brand kept, which seems to be rare for smartphone plans to include.

Nokia: More Symbian Phones Are Coming

Nokia-E7-00.jpg

Nokia and Microsoft today announced that Windows Phone 7 would become Nokia’s primary smartphone OS, but that doesn’t mean the end of Symbian … yet.

“We will continue to modernize the Symbian experience with selected UI enhancements and development of applications in Qt, as well as platform development work that is ongoing. This is important work to make Symbian more efficient and to protect our installed base of 200 million users around the world,” Nokia spokeswoman Laurie Armstrong wrote to us.
Still, though, it’s looking like Symbian’s days are numbered.
“It’s a transition program. It is Symbian people literally today who are working with Windows Phone technologies to advance those technologies. It’s a transition from Symbian to Windows Phone,” Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said.

Symbian Still Top Smartphone OS – Report

Nokia-E7-00.jpg

There’s been a lot gloom and doom surrounding Nokia and its OS lately. The company is largely considered to have fallen behind to the likes of Apple and Android. Nokia’s CEO, Stephen Elop, is apparently considering some drastic actions, having described the company’s current situation as a “burning platform” and suggesting a symbolic jump into the cold Atlantic ocean below.

There’s been talk of moving the company to the Silicon Valley in the U.S. and dumping its dependence on Symbian, in favor of Windows 7’s open arms.

With all of this talk, it’s important to put some things into perspective–namely, according to recently released numbers from research firm Gartner, Symbian is still the world’s most popular smartphone operating system. In 2010, Symbian appeared on 37.6 of smartphones shipped. Android and Apple took 22.7 and 15.7 percent, respectively, with RIM (BlackBerry), grabbing 16 percent.

Of course, the most telling part of these numbers are how they compare to last year’s. Symbian dropped from 46.9 percent to 37.6–Android, meanwhile, grew a staggering 888.8 percent over last year.

Also worth noting is the fact that Nokia isn’t the only company making Symbian-based handsets. Fujitsu, Sharp, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson also manufacture devices for the platform.

AGLOVES_VdayBundle2.jpgStill looking for a Valentine’s gift for that lucky lady? If you can’t afford a silver necklace from Tiffany’s, check out this bundle we found from Agloves. Made of silver-coated nylon, Agloves allow you to use capacitive touchscreens while keeping your hands nice and toasty. Normally $17.99 a pair, the company is offering its limited edition Valentine’s Twice the Love Bundle for only $24.99.

The bundle includes one pair of Agloves, one Chocolove dark chocolate/cherry/almond flavor 1.3-ounce bar, and one “I (g)love you” Valentine’s mini card with a poem. It’s all wrapped in a red organza bag with satin drawstrings. Ooh la la.

Unlike other touchscreen gloves we’ve seen, the Agloves’ silver-coated nylon is intertwined throughout the entire glove, so it’s not just your two pointer fingers that can use the touchscreen — the entire glove is a conductor.

webOS Coming to Laptops, Desktops

web os pc.jpg

It was pretty clear from the moment we heard that HP was going to buy Palm precisely what the company was in it for: webOS. What wasn’t clear, however, was precisely how many devices the company planned to implement the mobile operating system on.
HP/Palm unveiled three new devices today–the Veer, the Pre 3, and the TouchPad. Two smartphones and a tablet. But HP has even larger plans for the operating system. The company capped off today’s event by announcing plans to implement webOS on other connected devices, including printers, and some form factors you haven’t seen before.”
The company showed off shots of a printer, laptop, and desktop all running the operating system. More details coming later this year, apparently…

Palm is Dead

palm pilot gray.jpg

Sort of a melancholy footnote to today’s otherwise happy launch of new webOS devices. All signs are pointing to the death of the Palm brand. The name has been in limbo ever since HP bought the ailing handset manufacturer, but this news really makes the whole thing officially official.
HP stripped the Palm name from the launch of the Veer, Touchpad, and, most notable, Pre. The HP Pre 3? Doesn’t really roll of the tongue, does it?
Anyway, just a quick post to note the effective end of the Palm name. It’s been an 18 year roller coaster, and part of us is sad to see the company go. From the looks of the new devices, however, it seems that Palm isn’t really going too far, after all.

HP Pre 3 Launched

hp pre three.jpg

And in the most glaring reminder that HP has dropped the “Palm” brand entirely from its new line of hardware, here’s the HP Pre 3. Honestly, it feels a bit like switching lead actors for the third part of a film series, but HP bought the company, so it’s not really our call.
The forthcoming smartphone features a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor, slide out QWERTY keyboard, a 3.6 inch display, a 5MP camera, front facing camera, HSPA+, and EVDO Rev A.  There’s 215MB of RAM inside. The new Pre comes in 8- and 16GB capacities. It’s also got a fairly symbiotic relationship with the new TouchPad, which can actually take the Pre’s calls.
The handset will hit the market in the summer.
