iSkin Introduces New Solo and Revo Cases for iPhone 4

iSkin Revo - iSkin SoloIf you haven’t picked up a free skin or bumper from Apple for your iPhone 4 yet, iSkin has some attractive new designs in the form of their new iSkin Solo and iSkin Revo cases for the iPhone 4. The iSkin Solo is one of iSkin’s most popular lines, and has been updated to fit the iPhone 4. It’s available in five different colors including flat black, clear, light blue, purple, and pink, and all feature a translucent back so you can still see the back of the case. There are openings for the dock connector, headphone jack, speaker, and camera, while the power and volume buttons are protected but can still be used.

The iSkin Revo is a silicone shell case that protects all sides of your iPhone in four two-tone color designs: black/brown, yellow/black, pink/black, and brown/white. New York City to Add 3G and Wi-Fi to Subway Tunnels

NY Subway TunnelIf you take the subway to and from work or school, you know that your commute can be pretty boring sometimes if you have nothing to do, and while there’s nothing wrong with a nice, quiet, phone-free ride to work, sometimes you want to check your e-mail or do a little Web surfing on the way in. Thankfully, if you live in New York City, you too will be able to use your 3G or Wi-Fi device while you’re underground, thanks to the city’s new initiative to add both 3G and Wi-Fi coverage to its vast network of underground subway tunnels, not just the stations between them.

The New York Daily News reports that a four-company joint venture is working with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York City to install Wi-Fi and 3G cellular network gear in all 277 underground stations, a project that has been in the works for years, and now that the MTA has signed off on the plans, construction can begin. The wireless companies involved in the construction have all committed to building as much signal strength as possible into the installed equipment so passengers will be able to access their preferred wireless network when they’re standing on platforms as well as riding the trains deep underground.

Samsung Intensity II Now Available From Verizon Wireless

Samsung Intensity II.jpg
The Samsung Intensity II offers many of the same features available in other wireless phones, but it has a higher ecological consciousness than many of those devices.
Like many other phones, the Intensity II has a horizontal slide-out QWERTY keyboard for fast instant messaging. One-touch access to personal contacts and social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace ensures that you’re always connected to your friends and family.
The Intensity II has a 2.2-inch QVGA display, Bluetooth connectivity, and a microSD card slot that supports expansion cards up to 32GB in capacity. A 1.3 megapixel camera is included as well, and offers a special night vision mode in addition to series and divided shot nodes plus a variety of special effects.
Even though the Intensity II is available in Deep Gray and Metallic Blue, it’s actually rather green. The phone is partially made of recycled plastic, and the packaging it comes in has been reduced in size to minimize environmental impact. The carton is made of 60% post-consumer recycled materials and partially printed in soy ink. The AC adapter alerts you when the phone is fully charged, so that you can unplug it from the outlet to reduce standby energy use. It also includes an eco-calculator application to help you track car mileage, fuel efficiency, and carbon dioxide emissions.
The Samsung Intensity II is available now from Verizon Wireless for $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate with a new two-year service contract.

RIM Purchases BlackPad.com, Could Introduce BlackBerry Tablet

A move by a major smartphone company to buy an intriguingly named Web site does not go unnoticed by the Web, as Research in Motion learned today. RIM purchased the site BlackPad.com a few days ago, according to MobileCrunch. Today, the Web has been abuzz with speculation about the development.

So what does it mean? It’s anybody’s guess at this point, but many theories suggest that RIM is working on a tablet device that would compete with Apple’s iPad or HP’s rumored webOS tablet.

What do you think of this development? Would you like to see a BlackBerry tablet? What do you think of the BlackPad name? Please leave your comments in the section below.

Command Your Phone with the Q2 Bluetooth Headset

BlueAnt - Q2 HeadsetBlueAnt Wireless’ Q2 Bluetooth Headset does more than just relay voice. The headset, released yesterday, is more of a peripheral for your mobile phone that accepts voice commands, places calls for you, alerts you to SMS messages and reads them aloud for you (with the help of a companion Blackberry or Android app), and even announces the name of an incoming caller so you don’t have to look at your device. The Q2 also integrates with Bing 411 for quick access to news, traffic, and weather using your voice.

The Q2 doesn’t skimp on audio quality to bring you all of these feature: It has built-in noise reduction so your caller doesn’t hear background noise while you speak to them, and BlueAnt’s proprietary “Wind Armour” technology reduces noise from wind up to 22 miles per hour. The device even supports Bluetooth audio, so you can use the headset to listen to music, podcasts, and GPS information. All of these features will cost you, since the Q2 is designed to be a high-end headset. It’s available now at $129 list.

Magic Trackpad Doesnt Work With iPhone, iPad

magictrack.jpgBefore you start: yes, the idea of connecting Apple’s Magic Trackpad to an iPhone or iPad is kind of stupid, because these devices already have touch screens. But various people have been asking about whether Apple’s new Bluetooth gadget works with iOS devices anyway, so we decided to try it.

The answer, at least for now, is no. I kicked the Magic Trackpad into pairing mode and neither the iPhone 4 nor the iPad could even see it, much less pair with it or use it. So for now, at least, the Magic Trackpad is an OS X-only product.

Library of Congress Issues DMCA Exemptions for Jailbreakers, Filmmakers

iPhone4 - Home ScreenEvery year, the Library of Congress examines the DMCA and issues exceptions as necessary for groups of people who circumvent copy protection for various reasons, including fair use and parody. This year, the Library of Congress has issued six new exemptions, including two notable ones that allow for users of smartphones to jailbreak or root their device without worry that their actions violate the DMCA, and one that allows documentary filmmakers and students to rip and use short portions of copyrighted movies on DVD for educational purposes, documentary films, and non-commercial videos.

Granted, the exemption doesn’t mean that handset manufacturers have to support jailbroken devices or even stop playing the cat-and-mouse game of issuing patches that disable apps that help users jailbreak or root their devices. Similarly, this doesn’t mandate that movie studios provide unencrypted content for documentary filmmakers or students. What the exemptions do however is allow those groups to work without fear of being sued or issued a cease-and-desist under the DMCA.

The ruling also has exemptions for software that is protected by physical dongle where the dongle is no longer manufactured and no replacements are available, eBook readers that read-aloud or allow users to customize the text and circumventing copy protection on video games for the purposes of security testing. For more information on the ruling, check out our full coverage at PCMag.com.

The Apple iPhone 4 Case Program: Get Your Free Bumper or Case

iPhone - Case ProgramiPhone 4 owners looking for a bumper or a case to fix the now-infamous “death grip” signal loss issue can get one on Apple’s dime (or qualify for a refund of the Apple bumper they already purchased) today thanks to the Apple iPhone 4 Case Program. Apple opened the doors on the program today; qualifying iPhone 4 owners will be able to sign up to receive an Apple bumper or a third-party iPhone 4 case for free.

To participate, all you have to do is download the iPhone 4 Case Program app from the iTunes App Store and launch it once. Once the app validates you have an iPhone 4, the app will allow you to select from Apple’s approved bumpers and cases. The supported case selection is fairly modest, featuring designs from companies like Speck, Griffin, and Belkin. iPhone 4 owners who got their phones prior to July 23rd have to apply before August 22nd, and the program itself runs until September 30th for anyone looking to buy an iPhone 4 now.
